DUFF MCKAGAN On 'Chinese Democracy', VELVET REVOLVER's Singer Search - Nov. 24, 2008
Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER bassist Duff McKagan was interviewed on Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM this past Friday, November 21. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On whether he's heard GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", and what his thoughts are on it:

"I just heard the single, 'Chinese Democracy', and I heard it at the gym when I was working out. So I didn't give it… It wasn't like I sat down in a quiet room and listened to it and analyzed it. And I probably wouldn't. I think Axl's [Rose]… obviously he's a really talented guy and I shared a big part of my life with him, but that was a long time ago for me.

"I've been asked more about this record, starting about 8-9 years ago, and I probably know the least about the record. It's not like I don't pay attention to what's going on in music. But I've got a really short attention span. You know, I'll hear something… I heard a song by this band SHINY TOY GUNS last week — and these guys are killer; I love 'em — and then that'll be gone in about a week.

"As far as Axl's new record, I'm sure there's probably amazing stuff on there, just know there. I've only got that one song and a listen at a gym to go off, so I can't really say that much about it. But how do I feel about it? Good for him that this record's finally coming out. Obviously, I wish him the best. I'm glad that people that have been waiting for this record have something to finally go get."

"The band that we formed twenty-something years ago is a completely different thing, and that's been over for… wow, 15 years. But I know Axl; he's a perfectionist, in a good way, musically. So I know he's not gonna let something come out that sucks — at least in his mind. That counts for something with me. He and I, we shared a lot of good times, some crappy times, but when you look at the glass, it's definitely more than half full for me."

On VELVET REVOLVER's singer search:

"The only guy [out of all the people that have been rumored to be the new VR singer] we ever played with, and he was great, [was] Royston Langdon from SPACEHOG. And he was everything a singer should be — a great singer, a great guy, and an odd character — but there was just something that was missing, and it wasn't anything that he could have done differently. A ton of singers, through our management, have turned in their vocals on two songs of ours that aren't released. Once you get up over, say, 40 singers, it's hard to listen to listen and distinguish them all. If you sit down and listen to 10 guys, you're not giving the tenth guy the same listen you are the first guy. So we've gotta figure out how to go about this. I don't think any of the guys we've heard so far are 'THE' guy, and I don't think we can go out with a guy who's just good — we have to have somebody that's amazing. Scott [Weiland, VELVET REVOLVER's former frontman] was an amazing singer. I don't think people would really buy it if we went out with somebody who's just, sort of, good."

VELVET REVOLVER recently parted ways with RCA Records (a Sony BMG label), the record company that released the group's first two full-length albums.

VELVET REVOLVER's 2004 debut, "Contraband", has sold 1.98 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its follow-up, "Libertad", has shifted a little over 300,000 units in the U.S. since its July 2007 release.

Pepper Keenan, or Phil Anselmo would always be an interesting choice for a singer.... Good for Axl as well. Im glad this album is finally coming out so i can get my free Dr. Pepper :D

Corabi wouldn't have any main stream appeal, and that's something VR will need.

I mean, I personally think It'd be cool, because Crue 94 was awesome - but let's face it, it did terribly commercially. Outside of big hard rock fans (the people on BM) nobody knows who that guy is.

corabi is a geat singer but not for this band. he needs to put together a band that sounds like or get back with the scream or put out a new union cd.he has an amazing melodic/hard rock voice but doesn't fit with the crue or other metal bands.oh while I liked the first vr record wieland still sucks and is way over rated!

If they could convince him to step away from the acting gigs, Hugh Dillon (former singer of Headstones and The Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir) would be a choice singer for Velvet Revolver. Hey - the guy is well over his heroin-related problems, so that would not be a factor to consider.

In other thoughts:

If the Appetite For Destruction-era Guns N' Roses were to reform...no other band; no other tour would prove to be as financially successful.

It would be along the lines of Led Zeppelin...had they set off on a world tour rather than the one gig.

And this is why today's band running under the Guns N' Roses name is a travesty. Guns N' Roses are one of those few bands who live on in the hearts of people...as they were at a specific point in time.

Axl may own the name, but it's the people who took up with the music - who happily lived with it - they own the memories of Guns N' Roses.

It's wonderful to hear 'that voice' again, but Guns N' Roses it ain't.

I completely disagree with Duff. Scott has a decent voice and wrote some good songs with STP but he's far away from beeing an amazing singer or a great lead singer. His stage behaviour and charisma is not what a great frontman should be. Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, Axl Rose, Sebastian Bach, Phil Anselmo or Bon Scott are/were great frontmen, but Scott's not. He was pretty invisible when standing on stage next to Slash and that's not what a really great singer should be.

Maybe more so now, because it was always Axl. He put the band together with the best hired guns he could get at the time. They were always a supergroup. Now that Axl has the time and money to complete his vision, he can surround himself with better musicians. I will argue that Chinese Democracy may be the first TRUE GNR record.

i love these guys, but c'mon. I have a hard time believing they're really as disinterested in Chinese Democracy as they let on. They act like they don't even have the time to listen to one song. Fuckin listen to it and seriously report back. GNR was your band too.

The album is fucking incredible, disregarding all of the circumstances. 15 years or not, GNR or not, Axl's attitude or not, the album itself is an epic masterpiece. It would be even better with the Illusion-era band though (and maybe Bumblefoot thrown in for good measure :) )

First off...anyone that's a Guns fan that doesn't like Chinese Democracy didn't listen to it. It's different, but it is great. It took me a few listens, and when I did, I was hooked.

Secondly...I truly hope now that VR and AXL released their music finally, they can bury the past and re-group. It only makes too much sense. VR is lacking a singer, and they will never find one equal to Axl. GNR is a wierd animal with all the different guitarists, etc...but they will never be Slash. Let's all get in a group hug, re-group GnR, and release "Appetite for more Destruction" (or something similar). This crappy music industry NEEDS another Appetite.

So just in case Axl, Slash, Matt, Duff or Izzy (sorry Steve Adler...you're too far gone bud) read anything on here...get it together guys and make rock history (again). The world is waiting.
