GUNS N' ROSES' Original A&R Man Kicked Out Of 'Chinese Democracy' Listening Party - Nov. 24, 2008
Tom Zutaut, the man who signed GUNS N' ROSES to Geffen Records back in the mis-'80s, was unceremoniously booted out of the "Chinese Democracy" listening party, held at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood, California last Tuesday (November 18).

Tom tells Classic Rock magazine, "Yeah, sadly it is true that I was escorted out of the Roxy by a beefy security guy just prior to the last three songs of the playback. I did stand on the sidewalk and hear the last three anyway.

"I believe that love and hate are a complicated thing but ultimately the same thing. I love Axl and think 'Chinese Democracy' is a genius body of music. Although I had heard most of the album in an unfinished form six-seven years ago, and more recently through some of the leaks, I really wanted to hear it played back over a loud PA in its final form as imagined by its creator, W. Axl Rose.

"It is sad and disappointing to me that those around Axl would lie to him to fuel his hatred towards me with imaginary events used to drive a wedge between us. I love him deeply, will always love him and wish only the greatest success to one of the world’s last true creative musical sparks with a god-given voice. I am proud of my contributions to his career and am always there for him should he one day become enlightened to the truth of what surrounds him. It is also sad that he doesn't mention the hard work I put in on my short involvement with 'Chinese Democracy' with even a 'Thank You' considering lesser players are credited or thanked in the liner notes — even those who ridiculed him, belittled and made fun of him behind his back while I defended his genius 'til those around him poisoned him against me with distortions and lies.

"I wear his hatred as a badge of honor as it would be far worse for him not to care at all."

The Rockerrazzi web site has posted a video report from the Roxy listening party for "Chinese Democracy". The clip, which includes an interview with GUNS N' ROSES co-manager Andy Gould, can be viewed below.

I think music was alot more fun to listen to 20 years ago when you didn't have all this information about a band or somebody.

Tom Zutaut knows his music,he signed Guns and Motley back in the day...Axl is just wacked, typical Axl fashion to have him kicked out of the listening party...I am not sure about Chinese Democracy,i need to give it a few more listens...Some people say its brilliant ,some say its garbage...I think there are around 4-6 good songs on there...I think its too ballady and definitely not a metal record like their first album was..But thats Axl trying to make everything very epic like "November Rain"..It will still sell well i am sure...But was it worth the wait of 15 years?...I dont think so...

I went to my local music store yesterday. When you went over to the"USED" section, there were atleast 20 copies of the so-called "great" album for $6.99. It shows people are buying and returning it. Pretty sad when this "great" CD goes on sale on sunday, u could've picked it up in the used bin by the end of the day!

Yeah, those things are ALL *much* worse than the annihilation of Sodom and Gomorrah, wars raging worldwide, and the global warming that threatens every life on earth in less than a century.

It's that OTHER God... the one who takes forever to release a rock album... HE'S the douchebag.

Thank heaven for perspective, eh?

"but in this case I am for it since I don't think anyone should support an asshole like Axl Rose."

So an artist who doesn't need to put out another record for the rest of his life takes 14 years to work on and release a piece of music that he decides to price ONLY $11.99... and this is the guy you want to steal from?

Yeah, that makes sense. Totally rational. Let's buy from the bands who only put 3 months into their albums and are in it for the money... and steal from the guy who's doing it for love of music, and put over a year of work into each dollar it would've cost you to buy the album.

Not buying or listening to it at all is fine if you don't like the music. But claiming to be anti-downloading and recommending people steal this one as an exception makes you look like a jilted ex-girlfriend of Axl's.

Is there something about you two you're not telling us, dude?

Well, Chinese Democracy finally has seen the light of day. Some of us never thought last Sunday would come, but it did. The world didn't stop and there wasn't even a peep from Axl's camp about it's release. No comment? Huh. Oh well, it's ok, it's kinda sad that it doesn't rock harder but it is what it is. I think it's so funny that everybody keeps saying Axl Rose is an asshole. WTF? Do you even KNOW HIM? Just because he has some psychological issues (he's documented bipolar) and he's shown up late for a few shows, why does this make him an asshole? He is what he is. A human being. If you're his friend and close to him he's one of the coolest most dependable friends on earth. He'd do anything for his friends. If you don't like him for whatever reason than just move on and shut the fuck up allready. God, some of you pussies act like he's your girlfriend and you're a jilted lover or something. Fuck.

This is going to be one of those albums that isn't about singles but about the album in it's entirety. Therefore, it is something that should be listened to the whole way through. Kind of like "The Wall". Yeah, the Wall had singles but it is about the whole album, not singles. This seems to be one of those. It might not rock hard or whatever and this is going to turn people away from expecting the next "Appetite". This is indeed something completely different. This is how I choose to view this - not in comparison to what we are all familiar with historically. IT is what it is. That being said, I can view it in this way and let it grow on me with an open mind and I bet if others used this approach, they'd like this album too.

As far as Axl and his character defects go, I remember in Slash's bio, where he speaks about Axl sleeping on Slash's Mom's couch during the day, back in the day, and Slash's G-ma politely asked him to go back downstairs to Slash's room to sleep and Axl told Slash's Grandmother to fuck off. Nice guy. They give him a place to stay and this is how he treats an old lady. Then, when Slash brings this up to Axl, he starts rocking back and forth in the front seat of Slash's car and then jumps out of the vehicle at 40 MPH. I don't know but it seems to me that this guy has always been an irrational nutcase. This didn't happen to him when he got famous - he was always this way. Fucking issues...

use your head dude, people go and buy these albums, burn two or three on the computer and then return. Get your money back and still have the album. Little dipshits that like ipods and itunes are responsible for these types of things happening. i think instead of finding the newest way to listen to music (mp3's suck and you all know it, we have shitty quality now) people should find cures for cancer or something, quit re-inventing the wheel

According to Slash's book, if it weren't for Tom Z, Appetite would never have been made, GNR would have been dropped by Geffen before they ever made an album, and Axl would have never had a career.
