DREAM THEATER Begins Recording New Album - Nov. 27, 2008
Drummer Mike Portnoy of the progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER has finished laying down his tracks for the band's new album, due in early 2009 via Roadrunner Records. He says, "Imagine a DREAM THEATER album with 'A Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium', 'Learning To Live', 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album... COULD YOU HANDLE IT?? Excited? I sure am!!!!"

DREAM THEATER's "Chaos In Motion 2007/2008" double DVD set sold just under 9,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 2 on the Top Music Videos chart.

"Chaos In Motion 2007/2008" documents DREAM THEATER's "Chaos In Motion" world tour, which kicked off June 3, 2007 at the Monsters of Rock festival in Milan, Italy and concluded almost a year to the day later on June 4, 2008 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's essentially a travelogue of their most recent touring experience. "Chaos In Motion 2007/2008" was made available in two configurations: as a double DVD set and as five-disc collector's set which includes two DVDs and three CDs, containing 14 live tracks featured in the DVD set and expanded artwork.

DREAM THEATER's first-ever best-of collection, "Greatest Hit (…& 21 Other Pretty Songs)", was released through Rhino on April 1.

Stop copying yourselves !!! Get back to practicing, and do something new for a fucking change. I'm tired of hearing you guys rehash yourselves time and time again trying to pawn it off as progression. Another stale album, and DT should officially be dubbed Regressive Rock, as you haven't put together a complete record of quality material since "Awake."

I wouldn't go as far as to say that they haven't put out a complete record of quality material since Awake... but, post 90's Dream Theater has left me a little wanting... and I miss Ibanez Picasso era Petrucci--totally different player than the current Petrucci.

Metropolis II: SFAM is better than Awake...just one guy's opinion. First day buyer of the new one when it's released, too.

Eh Scenes and 6DOIT wern't good albums? Get a grip

They have been getting a little more wanky with every release since Rudess joined though, they need someone who plays his keys like a fucking keyboard instead of trying to be a second guitar.

but they have been a little uneven for the past decade or so. "Train Of Thought" was a great album though but I must say the second Liquid Tension Experiment album beats most of what DT has done.

Are there any actual music fans here at Blabbermouth? I mean, honestly, all I see is music-hate. Somebody used the words "Regressive Rock" earlier in this thread........"Regressive" might be a better way to explain the majority of people who post here. Nobody wants New, nobody wants different.......they want everything to sound like "the OLD Metallica," "The OLD Guns N Roses," "The OLD Iced Earth," "The OLD Dream Theater," even "The OLD Cradle of Filth," "The OLD *insert name of any band.*

...but then as soon as a band releases an album that sounds like their "OLD" stuff they are immediately attacked for "Rehashing" the past or being too "Retro." Slayer, AC/DC or Motorhead ring any bells?

Honestly, its a wonder that bands even continue to bother making music at all. Whatever they do will be called "wrong".

ACDC's Black Ice is awesome and I love each and every one of the newer DT albums. To me, I'd rather spin anything Octavarium, TOT, Systematic Chaos, 6DOIT etc. than AWAKE, just cause that's my taste, I like the newer stuff a lot!!!

General Ceel: i agree with you. i have appetite for destruction and back in black and i dont want them again, i just listen to them if i want too.
AC/DC, Motorhead, Slayer, they are all special bands and noone is like them so its good that they are always similar, and when you buy their albums you know what you get!

and also with Dream Theater, i have to disagree, Scenes from i memory is probably their best album.
their last few have been very good but thats maybe the problem you always get good stuff from them so they stop maybe to get the same response it used to get. had it to with Black Label Society. when new bands come along everyone says they are great and then they get older and are still making good music but jsuit different music then they used to, but still probably better music then the new younger bands are making.

thats at least with many of the older bands now, but still they sell less albums then the younger but can hold bigger concerts and are still making better music.

their stuff doesn't sound the same at all. the past couple of albums have all had pretty good differences as far as songwriting, orchestration, lyrical content, etc. seriously, i love all their newer albums as much as their old stuff. don't really have a favorite, but awake truly is one of their best. i'll admit that. but all of you just shut up. for real. dream theater is a great band and they have definitely been progressing in their sound since they have started. they haven't had a single album sound like another one yet. people really are stupid. and don't bother responding to this because i'm not checking this thread again.

I can't believe you guys?!? 6DOIT, TOT, 8V, and SC all sound completely different and kick ass in their own ways. Disappear, The Glass Prison, Octavarium, Sacrificed Sons, Stream of Consciousness, In the Presence of Enemies..... not quality material? You have no clue what quality is. I bet the new album will be new, different, and have a bunch of amazing songs to add to their list. That's why DT is DT. No other band like them.

i am very glad to see alot of peopel saying AWAKE is the best DT album, it realy is, by far, we should petition that they actually acknowledge awake as a msterpiece, they hsrdly ever play material off it live!!!

but i also love scenes from a memory and 6 degrees!
they rule, train of thought was awesome but not as much.

every dt album has soe great tracks, but awake, every song is great, i recon its down to kevin moore though...

"ToT and SC might be my favorites....they prove that DT can be as fast and heavy as any thrash band out there."

lol love Dt and thrash metal...that comment was jus wierd....

but yes, cant wait for the new DT album, it will be great....but eexpecting anything as good as awake, but like death magnetic it will kill and show elements of the past even tho not the bands best work!

That the DT sound is becoming a bit predictable, but they're still a good band. Train of Thought was heavy, but in a DT way, and so was pretty unique sounding. I think they have some opportunity to progress in that direction if they want. Hopefully that will happen, because the last couple of discs have been kinda boring except for Octavarium's title track, which was awesome.

My faves in this order, the 2 first ones clear, the rest variable:

Awake
Train of thought (why doesn´t anyone vote this?)
Images and words
Metropolis pt. II
A change of seasons (just the song, plain AWESOME)

Btw, can´t wait for their new album. As someone said before, a progression from `Train of thought´ would be ideal, I love the dark, heavy side of their albums, hence my faves.

To those that claim DT has been rehashing new material since Awake, I cry "seriously, dude?" DT has to be one of the most experimental bands out there, and shamelessly so. Pick any two albums from their discography and there are HUGE differences. I would argue that Systematic Chaos is if anything their most well-rounded album that best incorporates all of the "styles" they've developed over their career. For this reason I think it's their best-made, most mature work to date. A true fan though recognizes the difference between what makes an album their own personal favorite and what they consider to be a band's "best" album. To give my input on the favorite album discussion, here's my personal top 5:

1) Images and Words
2) Systematic Chaos
3) Awake
4) Scenes from a Memory
5) Train of Thought

I think that a real "fan" should not try to expect anything from this band... JUST LET THEM BREATHE, TAKE THEIR TIME AND BE FINALLY FREE TO DO WHICH I CONSIDER THAT'S AN ENDLESS SACRIFICE: MAKE REAL GOOD MUSIC THAT ALWAYS SURPRISES!!! THEY DON'T NEED ANY PRESENCE OF ENEMIES IN THEIR LINES, BECAUSE DISTRUST IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.

Heres my 2 cents. I always appreciate how Dream Theater have NEVER made a Rehash album, always coming from a different angle. As far as all their albums go a lot of people will disagree with me but I love Systematic Chaos. The greatest thing about them coming out with a new album is that you don't know what your going to get until you hear the finished product. Although I guess the majority of people want them to have another "Awake" or "I&W", I would rather them be a true Progressive Rock/Metal band with them experimenting instead recycling crap like a lot of other bands have.
