MATT SORUM Says 'Chinese Democracy' Is A 'Toe-Tapper' - Nov. 28, 2008
TMZ.com has uploaded video footage of former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum at the Los Angeles airport on his way to Toronto to perform at tonight's (Friday, November 28) Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards with guitarist Stevie Salas. When asked by the cameraman if he's heard the new GUNS N' ROSES album "Chinese Democracy" and what he thought of it, Sorum hesitated for a few seconds before replying, "It's a toe-tapper."

Sorum and Salas will be joined by Jara Slapbak on bass for tonight's performance. According to Salas, "I have recorded with Matt plenty of times, but Matt gettin' funky on songs like 'Born To Mack' and 'Blind' is something to see and hear! He is awesome, and as always, Jara in on point."

Salas has previously played with George Clinton and Mick Jagger, among others.

Seeing that ballads dominate the album, I don't think we can say it's "toe-tapping." Sorum is either being sarcastic or he was searching for a polite reply and stumbled.

Sort of strange that we have heard absolutely nothing from Axl leading up to the release of Chinese Democracy. No TV, radio, nothing..........maybe he is locked up someone trying to figure out how he can make a reunion happen without losing too much face and making more money on the tour over anyone else (******tongue planted firmly in cheek******)

I think that "This is I love" was written about Axl's favorite pet gerbil. Personally, it reminds me of my grandma's Chihuahua. A wonderful song about love.

They thought CD would be like Appetite for destruction or UYI and cry about the variety of influences on CD, industrial being one of them.

I guess they should have take notice of a song called Oh my God.

It was clear that Axl was going for something special. If losers thought that it would be like the Guns of old and bought CD, that's their own fault.

I'm happy if people try to return CD. That proves that this album is for the minority of people who knows what is real music.

Since you keep talking about what real music is, I'm curious as to what are, in your view, some other examples of "real music"?

I'll try anyway in saying what for me is real music. I'll try not saying the obvious choice but will sometimes for some exception. I mean albums that are very special like this first one:

Megadeth : Rust in peace, Risk (Yeah i really mean Risk. People don't like it but it's an amazing record from a creative standpoint and if you're open-minded)

Frank Zappa : Hot rats, The Grand wazoo.

Rolling stones : Exile on main street, Sticky fingers, It's only rock and roll.

Tesla : Psychotic supper.

Bruce Dickinson : Skunkworks.

Glenn Gould : Bach : The Goldberg variations

Chopin : Piano concerto no.2 (I could add a lot of classical music, but i will contain myself)

Pride and glory

The black Crowes : The lost crowes, Amorica, Three snakes and one charm.

Led Zeppelin :Physical graffiti.

The tea party : The interzone mantra.

Deep purple : Made in Japan.

Motley Crue 94

John Coltrane : Blue train.

Dream Theater : Scenes from a memory, Awake

Willie Dixon : I am the blues.

Rush : 2112, Permanent waves.

Guns n' Roses : Appetite, UYI2, CD.

Your turn.

...I especially second Physical Graffiti, Made in Japan, 2112, Permanent Waves, and Appetite.

Actually, a lot of the music I listen to is weird, creative rock-mixed-with-traditional-music from Latin America and Asia, stuff like Todos Tus Muertos, Soul Flower Union, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Carabao, Cafe Tacuba, Tom Ze, plus Asian punk like Afrirampo, Eastern Youth, LTK Commune. But, I don't expect people on Blabbermouth to know that kind of stuff, with the exception of Taiwan's Chthonic. But, here's some more that you might know:

Beach Boys/Brian Wilson: Smile/Pet Sounds

Metallica: Ride the Lightning, Masters of Puppets

Radiohead: In Rainbows, OK Computer

Bob Dylan: The Freewheelin', Bringing it All Back Home

Sigur Ros: Takk, Agaetis Byrjun

Sex Pistols: Never Mind the Bullocks

Fairport Convention: Liege and Lief

Moody Blues: In Search of the Lost Chord, To Our Children's
Children's Children

Soundgarden: Superunknown, Badmotorfinger

The Replacements: Let it Be, Tim, Pleased to Meet Me

The Byrds: 5D, Notorious Byrd Brothers

Woody Guthrie: Dust Bowl Ballads

X: Los Angeles, Wild Gift

The Beatles: White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul

Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes

DOA: Something Better Change

Pink Floyd: Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Meddle, Wish You Were Here

Drive-by Truckers: Southern Rock Opera, Brighter than Creation's Dark

Lynyrd Skynyrd: Second Helping, Pronounced

BOC: first 5 albums

Devo: Are We Not Men

Talking Heads: Remain in Light, Fear of Music

Kultur Shock: Kultura Diktatura

Black Sabbath: first 4 albums

Emmylou Harris: Wrecking Ball, Red Dirt Girl

King Crimson: In The Court of the Crimson King, Discipline

Rammstein: Mutter

Camper Van Beethoven: New Roman Times, Key Lime Pie

Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation

"Real music" is in the ear of the beholder.

The only music I hate categorically is:

1). Really cheesy 80's pop metal like Winger, Warrant, White Lion, etc.

2). Teen pop.

Although, I gotta say, nu-metal really doesn't turn my crank, either.

by saying real music, it's just an expression, a way of saying it. Maybe it wasn't the right thing to say.

It's just that in this case (Chinese democracy) people bitch about what they could easily predict. Axl didn't want to do another Appetite, it was crystal clear and now people bitch.

Three words : Oh my God. and others words : The leaks that were on the internet everywhere.

CD sure went well beyond people were expecting. But personnaly, i think it's great art. I listened to it with an open mind
and i listened to the actual music, not for what i thought it would be.

Velvet Revolver is an "embalmer".

Let me translate for Matt - I am so bitter I didn't play drums on this CD and I am stuck with this guy Slash who hasn't made one iota of progress as a guitar player since 1991 - the last time Axl pushed him to. Axl's record is way better than anything I've done since the last time I was told what to play on one of his records and I really regret missing out on it. Good music is good music and its something Axl knows how to produce and I don't have a clue how to go about making.

There. That's better.

There isn't much 'toe tapping' on a ballad filled record. I agree with what others said and he was trying to be polite and the wrong words came out. I don't think he's jealous either. I also think Slash has always been a great melodic rock 'n' roll player who makes real cool music and his leads are just awesome. Not that they're hard to play but they have so much feeling and melody that I'd take his memorable leads over any damn 'shredder' out there who is a dime a dozen and does nothing for me at this point.

Everyone knows the critics have been licking their chops to rip Axl limb from limb over this album for at least five years.

But, now that it's out, even the critics seem to agree that it's a good album. I read just about every reputable critic writeup in the nation on GNRnews.com a few days ago, and though most agree it's not AFD, they almost all have something positive to say about it. That, in and of itself, is amazing to me.

Most of them gave it around 4 out of 5 stars. I would not have thought the critics would have been that kind to anything Rose put out.

This album will have staying power due to the endless potential singles.

I'll venture to say that it's one of the best pop albums I've heard all year.

It's not "Appetite..." nor "..Illusion..", but it's a really good collection. If for nothing else it's good for Axl's unique voice.

Once again, it beats the hell outta 'most' everything else that's on modern "radio" or "MTV".
