HEAVEN AND HELL Begins Recording New Album
- Nov. 28, 2008
|
|
HEAVEN AND HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — has entered Rockfield studios in Wales, U.K. to begin recording its new album, the group's first since SABBATH's "Dehumanizer" (which was also recorded at Rockfield) in 1992. An early 2009 release via Rhino Records is expected. Two years ago, Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice reunited to record a trio of new songs for Rhino's "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" before launching a highly anticipated and greatly acclaimed world tour under their new moniker HEAVEN AND HELL. Revitalized by the reunion, the lineup is back in the studio now recording the first-ever full-length studio album from HEAVEN AND HELL. To whet the fans' appetites for the new album, HEAVEN AND HELL returned to the road this past summer for a short stint on the Metal Masters Tour, a month-long North American trek with JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD, and TESTAMENT. Regarding the band's decision to continue to operate as HEAVEN AND HELL rather than BLACK SABBATH, Iommi told Billboard.com earlier this year, "It really is BLACK SABBATH, whatever we do. We just choose to go out as HEAVEN AND HELL so everyone knows what they're getting [and] so people won't expect to hear 'Iron Man' and all those songs. We've done them for so many years, it's nice to do just all the stuff with did with Ronnie again." HEAVEN AND HELL will hit the road in early 2009 in support of the new album. So far the following shows have been announced: June 3-6 - Sölvesborg, Sweden - Sweden Rock Festival June 19-21 - Clisson, France - Hellfest BLACK SABBATH's "The Rules Of Hell" box set — which features all three of SABBATH's Dio-era studio releases ( "Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer") and its double live collection ( "Live Evil"), each remastered for the first time — sold around 2,650 copies in the United States in its first week of release back in July 2008, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "The Rules Of Hell" comes packaged in a deluxe slipcase with extensive liner notes featuring all new interviews with the band. Fan-filmed video footage of HEAVEN AND HELL performing the song "Neon Knights" on August 31, 2008 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California can be viewed below (clip uploaded by YouTube user "rockynhome").

Heaven and Hell were amazing live! Though I love the Ozzy Black Sabbath, I think the Heaven and Hell lineup will still be able to make an amazing album.
I can't wait!

I prefer Dio to Ozzy & in all honesty I'd rather this name come out under the Heaven & Hell moniker rather then Black Sabbath.

I'm fucking stoked for this new album. Seeing bands like Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, etc. still out there and doing new shit is refreshing to metal fans like me who feared it would slowly fade out and die. Can't wait to hear this, though I do hope Ozzy gets one more run at this beast before it heads back to Hell.

LOOK OUT when you dream of the darkness, when you look into the black.
You see Heaven and hell coming at your back..
Like a dancer with a faithful step Like a out of tune ozzy whos out of breath.
Heaven and Hell is coming back.

This is cool but anyone who say Ozzy had no showmanship is nuts back in the day he was great to see live solo and w/BS .And trust me i have not been a fan of his work in many years but those 1st 2 solo albums are the shit. Both him and Dio are both great in the own way.

The three songs on the Dio Sabbath 'Best of' were tepid on CD and in concert. I saw the first show in Vancouver. Underwhelming. Down blew 'em off the stage. Old men playing music--they get better with age in classical and the blues, but metal? Silliness.

Did we see the same show?
Down was terrible. Phil's voice was piss-poor, he could barely move around on the stage and the sound was way off. As far as Down goes, that set is probably up there as far as one of thier wost. Remember Phil had to call in sick for the next few dates of the tour? Ill give him props for going through with the Vancouver show, but he looked & sounded like he had no business being on stage that night. (However, when they played the commodore a few months later, they put on a Terrific show)
Heaven & Hell's set was nothing short of Magical. I hit up about 100 concerts a year, and that one was in my top 5 for sure. Dio sounded great, the new songs went over really well, and Geezer, Tony & Vinny looked like they were having the time of thier lives. Remember, that show in VanCity was the first time they had been on stage together in something like 14 years...
Anyways, im looking forward to this album. Funny how these threads always turn into a Dio Vs. Ozzy battle. I guess Ill throw my 2 Cents in... I Love 'em Both, but for my money, at this point in time, there is no contest. Dio is hands down the better performer & vocalist. But back in the day...its a toss up. They were both masters of thier craft.
Nothing wrong with liking both lads...

Awesome!
While I like the Ozzy era Sabbath I much prefer the Dio led Sabbath. Their songs are more creative, powerful and entertaining. Not to mention that Dio is a million times better vocalist and front man than Ozzy. Ozzy is boring and listless on stage.
I am definitely looking forward to the new cd and tour!

And they're saying the album might be ready early 2009?!?!
I don't care if they call it Black Sabbath or Heaven And Hell (although, for album purposes, I'd rather it say "Black Sabbath", but what are you gonna do?)
This album will show everybody how it's done. Just like this line-up always does.
As for the inevitable Dio Vs Ozzy debate that these threads always turn into... I love Sabbath with either guy singing. And I've seen both line-ups. They both kicked ass. Hell, Sabbath with Ozzy and Bill kind of surprised me with how good they were. But, live, I have to give it to the Heaven And Hell line-up.
Also, someone needs to tell Tony that if you called it Black Sabbath, you wouldn't have to play War Pigs and Paranoid. But we would love to hear you play Symptom Of The Universe, N.I.B. and Children Of The Grave with Dio singing them... Just saying...

One thing no one can deny is the fact that Ozzy has been saying there would be a new Sabbath album with the four original members for years and all we get is one song at an Ozzfest of which only bootlegs exist... The H&H announcement was less than a year ago (I think?) and already they've begun recording. Why they didn't pick Dio back up 5 years earlier is anyone's guess. Happy though that they finally told Ozzy to shit or get off the pot... but still would have liked to hear what a brand new Ozzy Sabbath album would have sounded like.
