THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER Guitarist Quits; Band To Tour As Four-Piece

Vocalist Trevor Strnad of the Michigan-based melodic death metal band THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER has issued the following update: "On the eve of our December tour with friends MISERY INDEX and SOILENT GREEN, we in THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER are faced with a heartbreaking dilemma: John [ Kempainen; guitar] has abruptly left the fold and refuses to accompany us on the tour. We are left with no choice but to carry on with the dates as a four-piece. The remaining members of the band apologize for these unprofessional circumstances, but we feel that it is best to go through with the tour and not disappoint the other bands as well as the fans who are looking forward to these shows. Please come out and show some BLACK DAHLIA love in our hour of need." THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER's tour with MISERY INDEX and SOILENT GREEN is scheduled to kick off on December 1 in Iowa City, Iowa. The band's new album, "Nocturnal", was released on September 18, 2007 via Metal Blade Records. The follow-up to 2005's "Miasma" was recorded with Eric Rachel (who mixed "Miasma") and was mixed by Jason Suecof. THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER live in Pensacola, Florida in July 2008:

hope they find a replacement. he was the weakest point anyway. His solos got bland. Brian is way better. Fuck I hope they stay together.

Their not a ripoff of swedish metal.. They incorporate swedish metal into their stuff and do it better than most swedish Metal bands anyway. I met these guys in sydney they were the coolest bunch of guys. Hope everything works out for them

Kempainen is their lead. Their sound is due to their dual guitars, not sure how this will affect their overall sound. His leads weren't that impressive so I dont think TBDM are as affected with his departure as DH is with their loss.

A shameless rip-off at that. I saw a kid wearing their shirt that said the band name in the exact same style as the later At the Gates logo. Yeah, as if we couldn't tell already guys...
Now that I think about it, most BDM fanboys have probably never heard At the Gates. Pff.

Rip-offs they may be, but it's so easy to say that a band is a rip-off nowadays. There are very few bands out there that not one person can say 'they sound like ----'. I am well aware that The Black Dahlia Murder sound quite a bit like At the Gates. And guess what I am proudly a TBDM fanboy and one of my favourite bands is ATG and quite frankly, I think TBDM are far better than ATG, mainly cos ATG are really simple and boring, dont get me wrong they are a good band but I think TBDM take what ATG do and make it better. May sound like blasphemy but I think it's true. And anyway, TBDM are the only band who are solid enough to keep this sound going. They sound like Swedish Death Metal but as far as I can see, they are the only ones that do(and still sound awesome). Therefore, long may The Black Dahlia Murder last.
Hope they get a replacement soon.

Obviously someone in this band is a huge asshole because they constantly have people abruptly leave.
Still, they keep it together somehow and all 3 record they put out I completely love.
However... the dual guitar sounds is huge on their records. Seems like a major element is going to be missing from their sound.
Maybe they just want to pay one less band member and don't give a fuck?

Well I can say that I hope the band does get another replacement member soon. I don't like the band at all (always thought they were more or less one of those mediocre bands Hot Topic always displays) but I just can't be a total dick. Musicians are good at what they do and are usually nice guys. The music might suck (in which case I think so) but I can't just go out and say they're a rip-off band.

If you played me a bunch of ATG songs and a bunch of TBDM songs mixed together I could easily tell you which band wrote which song. They have two entirely different sounds other than the fact that both bands are melodic. So? Every fucking band these days is melodic. You can tell that TBDM are INFLUENCED by ATG, but that's not the same as ripping off.
And to anyone who has the idea that anything Swedish is good and anything American is bad, go fuck yourself.
I hope everything works out for TBDM.

I don't even listen to TBDM, but I'm guessing they are melodic (death?) metal because people are comparing them to ATG. Considering ATG was a pioneer of melodeath, it can be argued that any band of the genre sounds like them, because they all were influenced by ATG anyways, if it it isn't absolutely direct. It doesn't mean much to bash them by saying they sound like the band who started their genre...

obviously. because you're all talking shit in here & not trying to create music yourselves. if you don't like the band dont comment. go comment on something else more pertinent to your lives.
they've sold thousands of records, write good music, play good music live, & are actually accomplishing goals in their lives.
at the gates didnt invent metal.
they made a really kick ass record & thats it.
this is a big loss. his solos were important to the band. the phrasing in his solos were top notch & full of feeling, something most bands lack these days.
good luck with a replacement or trying to talk him into coming back.

The Black Dahlia Murder are amazing. At The Gates are amazing. Of course, ATG is a MAJOR influence on TBDM, but TBDM aren't a rip-off band. They both play melodic death metal, ATG is way more old school and is a lot simpler, and TBDM is totally new school, extremely tight and fast playing, slightly generic/repetitive, and for some reason scene kids'll go apeshit for them more than ATG. I hope TBDM can overcome this, i find the dual guitar sound of Kempainen/Eschbach has always been consistently enjoyable in their albums.

wow tough times for metal i guess. but yeah seeing these guys as a four piece will definitely lack a bit. shitty too since this is the first time i think they've headlined in canada since like 2003 or 2004...

These guys make good music, Who cares about the tattoo, the short hair or other nonsense that has nothing to do with their music. They are influenced by ATG but THey DO NOT sound like them, They're far more agressive and far more complex. Their sonwrting and harmonies are really different as any average guitar player could tell you. Besides I dig the fact they don't wanna look "evil" as most european bands do. That really sucks.
