KISS' PAUL STANLEY: Creating New Characters For ERIC CARR And VINNIE VINCENT Was 'A Misstep' - Nov. 29, 2008
AskMen.com recently conducted an interview with KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

AskMen.com: Can fans look forward to new KISS material in the near future?

Stanley: Actually, it looks like we'll be going in the studio shortly to do the first new KISS album in 10 years. It's going to be very much a vintage, classic, '70s KISS album without much regard to what's happened since then; it's back to the roots.

AskMen.com: Back in the '80s, a decision was made in order to respect the fans that Vinnie [Vincent] and [Eric] Carr would have to wear new face makeup; why was the decision made to allow [Eric] Singer and [Tommy] Thayer to wear the makeup of original members?

Stanley: It wasn't to respect the fans; it was a misstep, if anything. The idea that we should dilute the four icons, which are world-known (not by name, but by character) and come up with like "Frog Man" or "Turtle Boy" was a big misstep. Those iconic figures are known worldwide; you show anybody in the world a photo of KISS and they'll tell you it's KISS. So, it just sold everybody short to think that when somebody left the band that they should take those characters with them. In a sense, we all created each others' characters because it was the four of us together and the synergy between the four of us that made those characters. Could we have done it on our own? I don't think so. It was all of us together that came up with it.

AskMen.com: Is there any truth to the rumors about a "Kiss II" reality show?

Stanley: It's kind of gotten distorted into something that it really isn't. The idea that some guys are going to take our place and we're going to go home is never going to happen. Really, what it was and remains is the idea that Gene and I have created and nurtured something for 35 years… [and] as successful and consistent as we've been kind of makes people wonder what it would be like if we put together another band and gave [them] that experience. It's much closer to that.

Singer is hands-down the better player than Criss, and Thayer is no Frehley but he is reliable. The worst performace I've ever seen by a professional musician was Frehley's Dodger Stadium debacle in 1998. Pitiable.

That's bullshit! Eric (especially) and Vinnie have a place in the KISStory and if it wasn't for them they woulda been a washed up 70's band headed to the scrap heap like the Village People!

as a kiss fan for 30 years I must say this, Eric Carr was a great drummer. Vinnie Vincent co-wrote some great songs. I will value a new KISS album on it's own merit. You can't hate something because of the past. Example: Last several Metallica & AC / DC albums, but the new albums are very good. Even the new G N' R. I wanted it to suck, but I listen to it as a fan of music. It's good for what it is. Give it a chance. Judge it for what it is, not what make you think that you should be a critic for Rolling Stone.

I was a huge Kiss fan in the 70's. It would have been an insult to US to put Carr in the Car character, since Peter Criss was THE Cat. So, they made Carr into The Fox.

Now, wtf was Vinnie... Yeah, he had a gold Ankh on his face- I painted one on my mug for Halloween my senior year in HS... heh

I second what fullshred said. Also I remember back then and it absolutely DID seem like the best thing to do with the make up.
However I hate that they have to keep dumbing down their abilities to keep an ancient sound. We've heard it all. GIVE US SOMETHING REALLY NEW. I've listened to that jap record of rerecordings and I wish they would have really REDONE them instead of just done them again.
C'mon guys SHIT!!!!!!!!!
We are all grown up now. We can handle some REAL new music, even with the make up. We put up with everything else.

Vinnie Vincent is probably the worst guitarist to ever walk the earth with a major label band. That's right, worse than Mick Mars or C.C. Deville. He's probably the only person that could possibly have made Kiss worse.

The Cat Is Peter Criss and Space Ace Is Ace Frehley...to add new caracters shows that this is a band that goes on no matter what. I loved the Fox and the "Egyptian mystic" or who he was. To put on somebody elses makeup is to deny that things change. Kiss of the past cant be again because those guys are gone...get in some new caeacters, pick up the stick or what ever, and go on

KISS has been around for 35 years...lets keep that in mind here. What Paul is saying is in hindsight. Have you ever done something that you now wish you hadn't? With regards to KISS, they ultimately made a better decision to take off the makeup off. The 80's non-makeup era KISS is still a good band. Vinnie Vincent helped KISS for 1 ALBUM! He is to KISS as Emmitt Smith is to the Arizona Cardinals. Bruce Kulick deserves much more credit for keeping KISS relevant through the 80's and 90's.

All incarnations did alright....although I wasn't a big Graham Bonnet fan...and how about SKYNRYD?? Thats a band that shoulda been left alone...but you know what they carried on.....ERIC and TOMMY ARE IN KISS. get used to it! Can't wait for a new album. Psycho Circus was a half harted attempt to mix Destroyer with Revenge and I'm sorry but Bob Ezrin blows..waaaay over rated producer. Yeah so he was a part of some good albums....but I'll take Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun over Destroyer anyday..Hell even Dressed to Kill is way better then Destroyer production wise....and thats my opinion and I feel better now..... thanks.....BRING ON THE NEW KISS MUTHA TRUKKKAS!

Who cares about kiss in 2008, really? This band lost any form of integrity years ago (decades ago) and they're just squeezing the cash out of their fans since then.

Everything about kiss spells GREED. There is no artistic motivation left, just economic ones.

I dont usually second guess anyone on BM, but dude you are truly stupid, just because you dont like KISS you say that they are the worst live band you have ever seen, for 35 years they have been known for their live shows, they give it 110 % onstage and give you 2 hours of rock n roll that is always killer, yes they will have a off night now and then, but usually they are better than the rest on a off night. I am going to guess that you are into this death metal non talent shit , thats where you need to stay.

I say bring it on....it feels like a moment of truth again....they've done it so many times and they'll do it again. The album will rock and calm everyone down. It has to. Just like when they did Creatures and Lick it Up, at that time, the albums had to rock. I believe that this one will rock, as he said, 70's style! People get on them for some great albums that weren't heavy, (dynasty/elder-great albums) but you must admit, when they've gone heavy, no'one complains. So expect exactly what he said, a"back to roots" "vintage/classic", "70's Kiss album"....."with no regard to what's happened since".....what everyone has been asking for!

Unfortunately, this board has been like this for years. These pathetic morons have nothing better to do than sit in their parents house waiting to pounce on anything that's not up to their standards.

Being successful does that to people. You always will have someone that doesn't like the way you've become a success.

I will say though, that in all of my years 'watching' these boards, this story will probably upset T-Boner the most! I mean, c'mon, to say that about VV! Just wrong, lol!

For all of the hate filled comments that show up here KISS still trods along, sucking up dollar after dollar, making the haters more and more angry.

I have asked the question for years now, if they are such utter crap, why have they sold 100+ million albums? Why do they consistently sell out tours? Why do people consistently buy their products? I'm waiting you clowns......

Save me the numbers from previous tours. We've seen them, rehashed them, and dissected them. Yet, they roll the KISS Machine in to Europe and leave a trail of destruction. A band hits a slow time, it happens. They assaulted us with the reunion tour, saw every corner of the U.S. What they needed to do, and didn't, was keep putting out some good music.

Paul's even admitted it, he wanted it to be a nostalgia act. He now realizes that they need to give more. Trust me, I'll be there after the few weeks of album sales watching you morons hate some more. They'll sign an exclusive deal like AC/DC and G n' R and will be back on top.

If the market wasn't there, you'd wear your wee's raw! You need them to be successful and relavent so you don't tug your lil buddy off and you can continue spewing your hate.

Exactly - well said - Now someone will come on and say that the Europe was cherry picked, Metalica , Celian , and many others just played the same arenas, only Kiss sold them out 10 times faster than Metalica. A new Kiss album will ship out Gold, and then if its good it will go platinum, thats alot better than 9 out of 10 bands mentioned on this site.

KISS is a cool band...my opinion is that they should create new characters and retire the former members'.

A new album will probably be like AC/DC and be sold exclusively through Wal-Mart and hyped to hell...tons of KISS shirts on the Wal-Mart racks for 6 dollars a pop, big advertisements for KISS all over the store...wait and see.

Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Madonna, Britney Spears, The Spice Girls, The Grateful Dead, Shania Twain, Linkin Park, etc..... all sell millions of albums, sell out arenas and stadiums, have people buying their merchandise.

Does that make them equal to KI$$????? Just because people buy it...doesn't make it great. Just look at the JonASS Brothers. They got millions of teenage girls screaming like they are The Beatles.....but they suck musically.

Give me a f'n break!

You're honestly telling me that KISS music has never influenced other bands? You think they were influenced by the toys? C'mon, that's just an immature statement.

Was it gimmicky at times? Sure! Doesn't dillute the fact that there was solid music in their line up at one point or another that was good enough to influence 90% of the music you probably listen to. Alive! alone influenced more bands out there than any

Still leaves the question why most of the negative posters consistently stop in KISS news and whine about another post about them. I'm pretty sure if ya checked the traffic, KISS draws a lot of it. Think about it, why would they continue to post stuff that were slow news generators? You keep hitting the thread and more traffic is generated. Try keeping off of em, as bored as you would be doing so! Maybe the news wire for KISS would dry up then too!

was a decent album...and so was carnival of Souls. Now, COS did not sound like KISS, but it was a decent 90's rock (ie. grunge) album. Pyscho was much more typical KISS. It was a good mix of their 70's sound with a touch of 80's and 90's influence. I can put it on now and it still sounds good. My fav KISS albums

1. Destroyer: too many good songs
2. Love Gun: a close 2nd
3. Revenge: Most authentic KISS album since Love Gun
4. KISS: Strutter, Cold Gin, Duece...great songs
5. Creatures: KISS on steroids
6. Rock n roll over: classic, a few fillers
7. Dressed To Kill: Rock n roll all nite, She...
8. Lick it up: good songs, updated 80's sound
9. Pyscho Circus: its a good solid KISS album
10. Elder: I actually like this album, and no I'm not gay

Eric Carr as a fox was the best move they could do, the band was fairly huge and putting him in the cat personna would have been a disgrace. As for Vinnie , it was a mistake. the make up in 1981-82 was becoming a joke for the whole band. They should have taken the make up off when Frehley left and make a fresh start with Creatures of the night.

I think they should go back to the 80s style KISS rather than 70s. Creatures of the Night and Revenge are two albums that I would like to hear KISS go back to. They shouldnt try to recreate the 70s style KISS music today. Eric Singer, like the great Eric Carr is a power drummer capable of heavier songwriting. They should write songs in the vein of "War Machine", "I've Had Enough into the Fire" "Unholy", "Fits Like a Glove" ect... The 70s era is the best KISS, but I'd rather hear them write new music more in their 80s style for a new album. The only KISS album I dont like is Carnival of Souls, The Elder is the MOST underrated KISS album!

As for producers...Brenden OBrian and Paul Stanley need to have a meeting or Paul should talk to Rick Rubin....in anycase I hope it's a "true fan" of the Klassic KISS Sound! This is their chance to redeem themselves for Psycho Circus....which besides "Within" was the only good tune. SUMMER 09 KISS!!!!! "Back to Kill" !!!!!!!!
