METALLICA: 'All Nightmare Long' Performance Footage From Edmonton Available - Dec. 10, 2008
Fan-filmed video footage of METALLICA performing the song "All Nightmare Long" on December 7, 2008 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada can be viewed below (clip uploaded by "metman18").

METALLICA has issued a new nine-minute video for the song "All Nightmare Long" from its latest album, "Death Magnetic". The clip, which premiered at Metallica.com, is a weird and creepy mix of animation and what is made to resemble old stock footage. It tells an alternate history story of mutant spores discovered by the Soviet Union and used as a biological weapon to turn U.S. citizens into zombies during the Cold War. The band performed the song itself live for the first time last Friday (December 5) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that because many of the songs on "Death Magnetic" started life during tour soundchecks, "All Nightmare Long" used to have a very different name. "Most of the pieces of music that we would end up jamming on were basically, the way we would refer to them would be by the city they came from," he said. "A bunch of the stuff in the song 'All Nightmare Long', the whole middle section, that was in a song called 'Glasgow', because it all came from Glasgow (Scotland). And so there's a bunch of that stuff that just literally, it's just directly correlated to geographical places. That was kind of the easiest way to keep track of it."

Other unusual working titles from "Death Magnetic": "The Day That Never Comes" was called "Casper, Wyoming", while "Cyanide" was referred to as "Munich".

Frontman James Hetfield told Sun Media that the lyrical content of "All Nightmare Long" was "an attempt to get back to the H.P. Lovecraft mythos" which Hetfield referenced on the band's classic 1986 track "The Thing That Should Not Be".

This sounds tighter than the "pro" shot performance from a few days ago.

Even tuned down, James is singing at the top of his range, and struggling a wee bit.

Anybody seen the video? The band's not in it, it's just 60's sci-fi footage & animation. Boo.

The crowd in this footage isn't doing anything. They just stood their and their conversations. Fuck, man. I'd be crazy.... and I'll be crazy when I'm going to the concert!

You can tell they are getting more familiar with the song. Also, it sounds like it may be tuned differently than the first time they played it. Anyone else hear that?

The crowd is sooo dull. Just a few hands up in the air but hardly any emotion/movement. Wtf? Here in Europe the bands have more fun because the audience is much more passionate, especially in the southernmost countries in Europe (Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal) or the Latin American countries.

Detroit has some of the best rock crowds out there - too bad the economy is so bad in Michigan that people won't be able to buy concert tickets after awhile....

The reason they dont play the intros of some songs is because if was recorded with more instruments that they have onstage, like 3 guitars or piano, stuff like that.

Those songs you mentioned are all album openers which have parts that can't really be played live as well as on the album. That's why they play the tape. But for this, I'm not really sure why they do it.

Your comment on live bands is totally right.

Can someone name me a "young" band that is awsome live??

SOAD are OK, even Slipknot do not perform as well as the bands u mention (even when the crowd is great, as they were when i saw them)

I was at the Seattle show and the Vancouver show. Seattle they had no moshing and crowdsurfing sings everwhere so the crowd didnt do fuck all, i was dead front and center infront of one of the mics and i think i got bumped maybe once. The security guards had the easiest job ive ever seen.

in VANCOUVER... all hell broke loose, it was awesome, ive never seen so many people dragged out by there feet. again i was front row on the rail so got to see a lot of action. Crowd surfing never ended, i had a bruise across my chest from being crushed against the barrier. All worth it tho.

Both shows were fucking amazing... that was my 7th and 8th time seeing them and these guys dont fucking age, i swear to god the next show is always better.

Death Magnetic tracks were fucking DEADLY live... blown away.

Anyone that thinks these guys are done... spend the buck and go to the show, you wont be disappointed and maybe we will finally get to stop ready your lame comments.

Yeah, I know man. I wish I could go to a show in England so I could get in the mosh pits and jump around like a mentally handicapped caveman. We're really missing out here in the States.
