AXL ROSE Breaks Silence On 'Chinese Democracy', Original GN'R Reunion, DR PEPPER And BRIAN MAY
- Dec. 12, 2008
Reclusive GUNS N' ROSES singer Axl Rose broke his silence last night (Thursday, December 11) by answering fan questions on the message boards of two of the most popular GUNS N' ROSES fan sites on the Web — MyGNR.com and Here Today… Gone To Hell!
BLABBERMOUTH.NET has collected some of the more interesting bits from the question-and-answer session and is re-posting them here for your reading enjoyment. (Note: Some of Axl's responses were slightly edited for clarity.)
Q: How come you always come on stage so late at gigs?
Axl: "I've been an after-midnight type since I was sneakin' out of my house in junior high [school]. With [the] old GUNS [lineup], we preferred [to take the stage at] 12:00 a.m. or so. When we moved to theaters etc., obviously that changes but it's never changed inside me. Doesn't matter what I do, so generally that's when I'm more myself. This isn't to mess with anyone that has an early schedule to keep, it's just personal preference. And in regard to the size [of] venues, I'm on record as preferring whatever venues allow for our schedule, but management and promoters can do a lot in their own interests behind the scenes that can rarely be avoided and their greed or whatever leads to a lot of double talk and ugly behind nonsense that generally eventually ruins things for everyone. Translated: once a tour is scheduled, however, it's like parting the seas to change. As far as being late, I've been that way my whole life. It drove Izzy [Stradlin] crazy but he would check himself and freely admit I was generally actually doing something that had to get done rather than watching basketball, etc."
On a video for the new GUNS N' ROSES song "Better":
Axl: "The 'Better' music video will be out in a week or so. Monumental promotion will start very soon!"
Q: Who do you listen to for hardcore blues? I'm a blues singer and I can tell from your work that you have at least got way into a couple of blues records.
Axl: "BESSIE SMITH, ZEP 1, ROBERT JOHNSON, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION, JANICE [presumably referring to JANIS JOPLIN — Ed.]."
Q: Axl, do you really have two or three other albums of material?
Axl: "For now, we'll concentrate and keep our focus on this album, but I will say I've always thought of it as a double. And no offense, but no one's trying to talk in parables. The issues are a bit more complex than anyone would like."
Q: Hey, Axl, is the [unreleased GUNS N' ROSES] song "Atlas Shrugged" as epic as the book? Who is your favorite character from the book?
Axl: "Song doesn't have all that much to do with the book other than trying to do what you believe in and a line about shoulders not being wide enough."
Q: Axl, was there ever a cover B and cover C for "Chinese Democracy"?
Axl: "Yes, there are. There are two more covers/back-cover combos and the real booklet that is all artwork that will be out shortly in some form. It's been an ugly battle that hasn't made any sense to anyone and whether anyone cares about such things the booklet or artwork has always been something I've been passionate about and to release the album with unapproved and unseen final artwork with a first work-only error-filled draft when others more recent were readily available still has not been explained but is finally getting cleared up. My fave is the 'How Are You' grenade cover."
Q: Axl, how do you feel about KANYE [WEST's new album] outselling "Chinese Democracy"? Do you like KANYE's music?
Axl: "I met Kanye at the Versace awards. He was very gracious. I love 'Gold Digger' and told him so. I'm a big fan of his stage performance as he seems to go for it physically which I relate more to. Before our release, I sent him a message that any nonsense from the media had nothing to do with us and wished him the best. I'm humbled we've done as well as we have considering."
Q: Just wanted to ask if you had any fond memories from the U.K. leg of the tour from 2006, particularly the concert in Glasgow in July?
Axl: "Glasgow was great. I think that's where I got to do a lot of slides on the stage. Was like a race track or something, right?"
Q: Axl, thanks for "Chinese Democracy", which I personally think is your best work. What's your pick for album of the year? And have you heard the new METALLICA album ["Death Magnetic"]?
Axl: "Ours, of course!! Yes, [I have heard the new METALLICA]. I like it."
Q: Axl will you tour Australia next year, and when are you looking at doing so? If you could work with [former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] Buckethead again, would you have him just in studio, or also would you welcome him in the touring lineup?
Axl: "Austrailia's great and the crowds are really alive. No plans [to tour there] yet but I'm sure there will be.
"I have no issues with Bucket. It's hard to tell what was real or not in things we were told by Merck [former GUNS N' ROSES manager Merck Mercuriadis, who was fired by Axl Rose in December 2006 — Ed.]. He's more than welcome to tour with us in some form or other provided we're both interested at the time and come to some type of reasonable terms. Personally, I have a blast with Bucket on tour and get a big kick out of the guy. A lot of feelings were hurt on this side of the fence in how things went down, and unfortunately, others used our silence and the public's not knowing for their own purposes at both Bucket's and our expense."
Q: Now that you said that, please tell us if Robin's [Finck, GUNS N' ROSES guitarist who is currently on the road with NINE INCH NAILS] out or not... because, otherwise, we'll be reading several "Axl wants Bucket back and Robin/Bumble/Richard out"-type of threads for the entire '09 year and these threads annoy us, the new lineup fans.
Axl: "It really is what it is. No decisions have been made by either him, I or us that I'm aware of. When we're touring or working in the studio, or there's social things like a friend's dinner or party, whatever, we would hang. But as people get older, they have their own lives. The STONES aren't going bowling every Tuesday, etc.
"Robin leads one of the most different lives I know of, starting with the trapeze in his backyard to the TV in his closet.
"Robin's work on the next is done so there's not lots for him to do here except the elusive promo and he'd rather be on stage. It's more about seeing where things are when GUNS decides it's right for a tour and if we're able to make agreements we both are comfortable and can live with at that time."
Q: As a native Colombian, I must ask: In 1992, while performing "November Rain" in Bogota (in November), it rained. Wait no....it poured. How weird was that, eh?
Axl: "Very surreal and religious feeling. So was being chased by the military in our plane down the runway gettin' outta Dodge there!!"
Q: Just wondering what stops you from playing more guitar live?
Axl: "Skill."
Q: Axl, I'm fixing to pack everyhting I own into my car and drive out to L.A. from Arkansas to give a career in music a shot. Any advice? Or should I just shit in my pants, dive in and swim?
Axl: "Follow your heart, don't sell out, and read every book on the bix [music business] you can find."
Q: "Catcher N' The Rye" is one of the best songs on the ["Chinese Democracy"] album. Why no Brian? [QUEEN guitarist Brian May recorded a guest appearance on the track back in 1999, but his contributions were removed from the final album version of the song.]
Axl: "There's a few reasons, and none of them all that big and definitely not in spite or to slight anyone.
"First off, obviously I knew people liked the song, but the Brian appreciation really only showed up in force publicly after we had moved on in GUNS. In fact, not many seemed to care and most comments were aimed at why Slash, in their opinions, should be here.
"Brian's solo itself is a personal fave of mine and I really couldn't understand, as he's such a rock legend, why it wasn't openly appreciated more at the time.
"In actuality, all that feel and emotion referred to now had a lot to do with Sean [Beavan, one of the producers who worked on 'Chinese Democracy'] and I and the parts I chose out of Brian's different runs, versions, practice runs, etc., to make sure we had those elements in one version. It's entirely constructed from edits based around one specific note Brian hit in a throwaway take. And though Brian seems to have warmed a bit to it, at least publicly, he was unfortunately none too pleased at the time with our handiwork. I remember looking at Brian standing to my left and him staring at the big studio speakers a bit aghast saying, 'But that's not what I played.'
"Sean Beavan and I were not in any way tring to mess with Brian, we just did what we do and then try and do our best to stand up for our decisions."
Q: Axl, are you still thinking of suing Dr Pepper's ass?
Axl: "Sure, but the actions taken so far had nothing to do with me and I was taken off guard as I had specifically told our team, 'Who fucking cares?! Right now we have a record to deal with.' My feelings are after their public response. It was cute. Maybe the guy who got it rolling originally meant well, but it turned out sour and maybe it's just me, but he seems like maybe he wants a bit too much attention so..."
Q: When [is] the [GUNS N' ROSES] online shop opening?
Axl: "I haven't been involved much in any of our merch and the reasons are it's been a mess legally for years. Unbeknownst to most of you, I was recently sued again by [former GUNS N' ROSES members] Duff [McKagan] and Slash for some murky Merckiness that I was unaware and not involved in. Fortunately that was resolved but it got ugly and took a while going into arbitration. Merck shifted our merch from some of our newer styles to incorporating more of the old with some scam that actually and surprisingly lost sales in comparison but that's old news. What I look forward to is incorporating the new artwork into our merch and getting some for myself. I think you'll like a lot of it. My vote's for the 'How Are You' grenade and the 'Sorry' automatic rifle artwork on shirts, etc."
Q: How do you feel about artists covering your songs ?
Axl: "Depends, but in general it's great."
Q: I know this is jumping the gun big time, but any tentative idea when you would like to see the next CD come out?
Axl: "No, maybe same bat time, same bat channel next year but we'll have to see."
Q: Is there anything in the past that you have now looked back on and thought, "Maybe I could have handled that differently?" Also, what are your ongoing hopes for GUNS N' ROSES in the future? I have cyclothemia and sometimes get this feeling that I can't be around people and need my own space and area. How do you find the bipolar affect you, if you don't mind me asking, that is?
Axl: "Of course, but in the world of sports and litigation....
"I've not been diagnosed as being bipolar though many misconstrue statements I made earlier as alluding to such and unfortunately there's been an abundance of misguided or unqualified speculation of various events but I definitely can relate to needing my own space.
"In my world, all bipolar means (and not to offend or make light of those suffering from a genuine condition or involved with those who are) is that someone can try to take cheap uneducated shots or try to claim I'm bipolar thus justifying why they should get paid a financial settlement for whatever nonsense they're up to. Fortunately that hasn't proved successful."
Q: What is your honest opinion on why the old lineup disintegrated? What is your honest opinion on why it took so long for "Chinese Democracy" to come out? I think that's what most people want to know but dare not ask.
Axl: "Two great but complicated questions, and I agree that people would like to know at least my take on things. Not avoiding them here, but they deserve more than I can give, as we've been at this a little while. But I'm attempting to speak out on several issues, these being a major focus over the coming weeks and months. What I can say now is you've been told a lot of things in order for others to promote themselves that factually they cannot back up in regard to either. They are complicated legally, financially and have devoured a good portion of my life.
"The record 'Chinese Democracy' you may have is nothing short of a miracle in almost each and every way that either it or I exist, in my opinion, under the bizarre and ugly conditions of the last over 15 years."
Q: I am curious as to your relationship with Mickey Rourke. He's one of my favourite actors, and I saw an interview with him recently where he said you were kind enough to give him songs for "The Wrestler". My question is: how long do you and Mickey go back, and do you have any interesting stories from "back in the day?" You guys strike me as being pretty similar in a lot of ways (I mean, as far as personalities and what you've been through in your lives) and it's cool for me to see two of my pop culture "heroes," for lack of better description, being friends, and also making similarly timed "comebacks." (Or whatever you want to call it.)
Axl: "Mickey and I haven't really hung much but have a lot of mutual friends over the years. He's always been massively supportive. I've always been a big fan of his as well. It's probably better for both of us we didn't hang directly back in the day!!"
Q: Hey, Axl, is Mickey going to pay you back for letting them use "Sweet Child O' Mine" in "The Wrestler" by starring in a new GUNS video?
Axl: "Actually, Mickey agreed to play The Shackler if we were to make a vid for [the song 'Shackler's Revenge']."
Q: Axl, have you been in contact with [original GUNS N' ROSES drummer] Steven Adler at all? Not as far as playing with him or anything, just to, like, lend him support? [Adler appeared this year on the reality television show "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" during an attempt to get off drugs. He was subsequently arrested in Los Angeles on July 18, after someone called police to report he was causing a disturbance.]
Axl: "I do wish Steven the best and in my heart hope that he finds some peace and security. As far as direct contact, no. It, unfortunately, gets too messy too quick. In Steven's mind, I'm the one who holds the keys and power over his happiness, so I'm the bad guy pretty quickly."
Q: Axl, why did you change [the title of the "Chinese Democracy" track] "The Blues" to "Street Of Dreams"?
Axl: "'The Blues' was my first working title and I was never comfortable with it in the sense that I felt that should be used with a bluesier-based song. And here in Hollywood, with the Walk Of Fame, etc., I had always seen that imagery in my head when I think of it. I also like the idea of the song having, in effect, two titles."
Q: Axl, I would like to know why you avoid the press so much. I think it's definitely hurting album sales, I mean, you haven't even done one interview. I know for sure you'd be able to get a few magazine covers. So why don't you? Why be such a hermit/recluse?
Axl: "That's your opinion and it very well could be true. What I have to say a lot of people have no desire to hear. With our team, we were able to negotiate through a mountain of issues to be able to release the album. Within those negotiations, I believed I had secured agreements, commitments and assurances that would have allowed a promotional strategy to be implemented that obviously I've had a fair amount of time to consider. Unfortunately, those things never happened, and once the record was closer to release, the biz went about things in their standard business-as-usual mode."
Q: Thanks for playing "Rocket Queen" in Melbourne. The red bike was awesome.
Axl: "I think it's in the 'Better' vid. Not sure if we cut it."
Q: I have one question for you, Axl. What is stopping the fans from seeing you Slash, Duff and Izzy back on stage together?
Axl: "You've been lied to and misled for such a long time that sorting through all that here is virtually impossible. A lot will come out over time, but the truth has been out there for a long time as well but that doesn't give you what you want, so this dance just goes on and on."
Final message for fans:
"Thanks everyone and thanks for all the support and the positive comments both tonight and over the years. I hope to do this again soon, maybe sooner than you'd think! And you didn't scare me off — I'm just burnt and would rather not mispeak on issues that may mean a lot to some. Thanks again."

Oh and hey, if you dont like Axl, or the album, then why bother reading the thread? Go try to suck your own cock or something, you may have more fun.

It's nice to see him answer questions to the fans directly. Magazines always edit things to make the answers more juicy and to rev up sales. He's smart enough to know his answers have to be vanilla as not to give people fodder to ruin anything he has with Guns N Roses. The sad reality is it is what it is. He's trying to live his life and apparently the fans and former members want things from him he can not give. His answer about Adler was sheer genius and from all the interviews I've read from Adler he seems to have a real blame twards Axl rather than twards himself. Hence why Adler will never fully recover from his addictions. I'm not a huge GNR fan but I have a new found respect for the man. I know what it's like to go on after former members leave and fans are pissed because a former member left. Sometimes you just can't get along or people just don't like the direction the band is going in. I think most people haven't a clue what it takes to work in the music business and speculate or "they think they know" thus they believe their opinion on something matters or should be taken into consideration.

"if you dont like Axl, or the album, then why bother reading the thread? Go try to suck your own cock or something, you may have more fun."
Because I've tried that and it's definitely not fun. And we need the negative comments because it keeps things more interesting. If there is a God, then there's gotta be a devil too, right? Constant sunshine and rainbows would be boring. Gotta mix it up. Conflict is key to a good story.
I think regardless of a person's opinion of Axl, be it positive or negative, nobody can deny that he is a very interesting person. Which is why people are reading about him and posting, even if they don't like him. Some people are just haters and post insults on any Axl related article, and to me that's just a waste of time and energy because it accomplishes nothing and there's no merit to those types of hate-filled and generally non-constructive comments.
So, here's something constructive... Axl, while interesting, has always been a prick. He's an amazing musician and some people may claim he's just misunderstood and a complicated person, but that's not my opinion. Those are just nice or PC ways of saying he's bat shit crazy. It's easy to understand him. His behavior speaks for itself. But gotta love his honesty and I won't deny he's an interesting character. He's just an extremely stubborn man who knows what he wants and isn't gonna let anyone fuck with that.
I respect Axl as a musician and am a GnR fan myself. But Chinese Democracy isn't GnR. And someone mentioned "Better" as being a bad ass song. I disagree with that completely. IMHO, it's amazing that this song was selected as a single or even put on the record for that matter. The whole album is mediocre, but this song? Please. I know Axl can do "Better" than that song and I'm hoping for a "Better" album next time around. Have I beat that one to death yet? Guess I had "Better" get back to my day.

Wow. Good answers. Doesn't seem like an a-hole to me, at least nothing more than what we already knew in that regard.
Seems to be pretty laid back and positive, unlike many people on here expected.
Agree that the web is a great venue for any artist to get their message out to fans with ZERO editing.
Interesting that he changed the name of The Blues. I thoguht maybe the record co. did that.
And that the artwork he did not like, esp. the errors in the booklet.

Great to see axl is still alive, and a pretty good interview too. CD is easily the best album of the year, all the haters on this site are just ignorant little f*cks who just take pleasure from bashing Axl, although he released an album which most artist would kill to have.
So what he changed the sound a bit. He is not afraid to try and be diverse a bit, unlike AC/DC who just play the same three songs over and over again.

Stiltskin: Axl is admitting he likes another artist. And he seems to be more interested in the guy's performance similarities than his actual music. Read it. Hmmm....that makes him not a "rock guy". I'm pretty sure that makes him glad you aren't a fan. Who wants a close minded jerky anyway? I don't like Kanye or the like, but I'm not so stupid that I judge those who do.

Seem's like Merck is the new whipping boy. When Bucket left the band, Axl issued this hilariously hypocritical statement, calling him "inconsistent and erratic" or some shit like that. Now, Axl is claiming that "I have no issues with Bucket" and implying that Merck fucked everything up. It seems like Axl's always shifting blame--whoever is at the top of his enemies list takes the fall.

"So what he changed the sound a bit. He is not afraid to try and be diverse a bit, unlike AC/DC who just play the same three songs over and over again"
Yes, he changed the sound. Moving forward is better than moving backward, right? But to me, ChiDem doesn't sound like I envision GnR should sound like, but Axl can do whatever he wants and that's not why I dislike the record. I don't have a problem with the fact that Axl released a solo album under the name Guns n' Roses. The problem is that the album as a whole isn't cohesive and the quality of the songs are actually very sub-par.
I, like many other people, hold GnR to a higher standard. And the quality of the music on ChiDem does not live up to these expectations. It's irrelevant to me that the musical style was taken in a different direction. That old style isn't possible any more as the band is missing key members that composed that original style, and I've made my peace with that. I wasn't hoping for "Use Your Illusion 3". I was hoping for a solid rock album from a band that I have a lot of respect for. And the band didn't deliver. While there are some decent tracks and a few exciting moments on the record, overall it's a let down and I'll probably never listen to it again.
As for your AC/DC comment: Fair enough, but that was a cheap shot. What's really interesting to me is that AC/DC does in fact sound very similar to how they did 30 years ago and have not really strayed from their roots at all. 30 YEARS. And they are still here and very successful. And some times it does feel like they've written the same song several times and just change the title. But what's interesting is that, coupled with the fact that they have been very repetitive over the years, their latest album which came out this year has been insanely successful. Now, record sales are not a direct indication of an albums quality. We all know that. But why not stick with what works? Nothing wrong with sticking to your roots, especially since so many fans whine when a band does change their sound and try to be a little experimental.
That is all.

he's always a great interview, well thought. He makes things seem logical, in his mind...how can this be confirmed its really him? Those sites don't have the transcriptions on them. Just wondering?....He's quite into studio trickery, the Brian May discussion tells alot, sampling notes & piecing together a solo....changing sounds, moving forward, progressing is great. I'm not sure he progressed but that's my opinion. He wanted to assemble something different, and go solo in effect....as far as AC/DC keeping the same approach for 30+ years, God love 'em. It worked til 1980, they were killer. But I wouldn't want EVERY band to take that approach. Just like Rush does their songs note for note live, its cool for them, but would be boring if all bands did that.

Chinese Democracy is hard to digest and, while it's not the greatest album of all time, it's an interesting and dynamic listen (particularly w/ headphones).
Would have liked to have seen a follow up to the Brian May question. For production that seems to be hell-bent on packing as many possible tracks into each song, why not May? Could even be a promotional tie-in of some kind.
Only true revelation was that, indeed, there are more tracks that have been "turned in". IMHO, Chi Dem HAD to come out in it's current format (11 "heard" songs) to begin to put the band back in the public consciousness. A&R guys aren't so stupid (I wouldn't think, at least) to put a lot of $ behind songs that have existed for years. This release serves as a clean break of sorts, so they can move on.
2008 gave us pictures of Bigfoot, an African American president, the end of the American car industry, a good Metallica album, AND a live statement from Axl. Time for the Holy Hand Grenade!!

The only original memeber is Axl. Why dont they cll the band Ale Grease or something. Classic case of too little too late and the album not living up to the hype. This thing was destined to fail from inception. Nothing like a brief respite to calm the nerves I guess. GNR it aint...aging rockstar looking for redemption, ahhh yes we have a winner.
Who cares?
Appetite for Destruction was brilliant and will always elicit familiar emotions. Everything else past that was grandstanding and posturing courtesy of a spoiled brat rock star who thought his shit didnt stink.

T Bone, I can see you're on Team Axl, good or bad, that's fine, but this is delusional. He's "all about the fan", whatever. I'm not saying he does or doesn't appreciate the fans, but what has he done in the past that was so "fan-centric"? Not going on til midnight on a Monday night. Maybe going on for 3 songs & leaving because the vib wasn't right...I was just reading, he was trying to leave a gig in Detriot cuz he had bad Deja Vu, the opening band watched in shock. Yeah, he's all about the fans. Releasing music 14 years apart, his point of view, but its not for the fans....yes, he is probably going to spite management, but he didn't do much publicity in the past, a lot of MTV specials, but he himself....seemed Slash did lots of interviews, Rockline, etc. When Axl was around it was a special occasion, even for the band.

I'm not anti Axl, I definitely think so many of his actions are highly questionable from a FAN"s point of view....and why shouldn't Slash & Duff sue, when they are getting dicked out of $$, their piece of things. They foolishly signed off the name for sure. To dismiss all the sh*tty things Axl has done to his band, fans, etc, & never question...then go for it. When will enough be enough? Another 14 years? Another set of band members(please don't tell me this is GnR!), more excuse why he can't tour? Don't promote if you dont' want. If you want to go away for 14-20 years, again, its his life, but as a fan, you don't question this?

How about if Zep does go out as Zep with the Creed guitarist? Hey, you're living in the past if you don't get their new music & vision. you MUST accept this. F that. I'll listen to the music objectively, maybe even love the album but will always question why he ruined a great band, & will NEVER delute myself to say "yes, this IS Guns & roses", just because Axl Rose says it is, we MUST follow his lead...its like a bad Star Trek convention, you must not anger the "provider" Axl....Axl WAS NOT GnR souly....What if Slash had taken over the name at Gun point, & toured with Snakepit, but said "this is GnR"...well, ah, that's not axl.

If you lived back in the day, not that long ago, when GUNS N' ROSES were the kings, you wouldn't hate. Believe me.
Most of posts are very annoying to read (like mine's probably for some) when you read this nonsense. Since its always the same retarded opinions "this guy is nuts", "this guy is mentally ill", "axl is an axhole"...
Just for the record, a genius mind is, usually, crazy mind. If they had some... something in their brains they would know that a lot og great artists and persons in general have shown they huge talent to the world even having a mental disease.
Abraham Lincoln The revered sixteenth President of the United States suffered from severe and incapacitating depressions that occasionally led to thoughts of suicide, as documented in numerous biographies by Carl Sandburg.

Axl may suffer from depression, not allowing him to always be happy, ruining good situations etc. I don't know. I don't think he's on Brian wilson's level. Maybe this is why Axl isn't in public more, only those close to him know. I'm not knocking him for that. I think he is/was a very good front man, song writer, but not on a genius level. For my $$, there are very few genius/visionaries in Rock. That's a whole other discussion....reading on him, say in Slash's book, his behavior was real bad....btw, to the GnR fans, where is the allegiance to Slash/Izzy/Duff for crying out loud. You think it was just Axl that made those great years/records great?

COMMENT | GET IN THE RING... BORI posted by : T-Boner.com 12/12/2008 2:24:47 PM
"Get in the Ring" is the fifth song on the Guns N' Roses album Use Your Illusion II. It was written by Axl Rose, Duff McKagan, and Slash
and is directed at music critics who gave the band negative reviews because of their actions on stage. Critics from Hit Parader (Andy Secher), Circus, Kerrang! (Mick Wall) and Spin (Bob Guccione, Jr.) are all mentioned by name.
For many years there was a myth that Mick Wall of Kerrang! music magazine at that time, was mentioned because of his book 'Guns N’ Roses: The Most Dangerous Band in the World’, which was a no holds barred collection of interviews and stories about the band. Mick Wall himself has refuted these claims and alleges that the real reason for his mention was a interview he wrote in early 1990 for Kerrang! about Axl Rose’s threat to harm Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe over an incident involving Vince’s wife and Izzy Stradlin.
Guccione actually responded in a letter to Axl Rose, saying that he accepted the challenge; however, no fight ever occurred .
The song is notorious for its amount of swearing. The song was originally written by McKagan with the title "Why Do You Look at Me When You Hate Me?". Nevertheless, the title was shortened, and the original title became the first line in the final version.
Despite popular belief, the song heard on the album was actually not performed live, but was rather recorded in the studio and crowd noises were added to it (similar to all the songs on Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide), recorded from a concert in Saratoga Springs on the 10th of June, 1991. Such noises included the "Guns N' Roses" chant in the beginning and the "Get in the ring" chant at the end.

"This is probably the first time the haters are reading some words from Axl. "
he had some press releases from 2001 on, so there were other chances to hear "his words". All of them had a common denominator, blaming someone else and spitting on slash and duff. Even the press release after Buckethead left wasn't that amicable at all, in spite of the fact that he now is all friendly towards him.
I made some comments in earlier threads and I feel that I got right most of what he wrote, he was pissed because as usual his handlers/managers/label/whatever didn't do as they were told and there is always someone else to blame for his faults/shortcomings.
Do you really believe he's 100% sincere all the time? do you also believe in santa claus?
So the old members said a lot of lies through the years, yeah, strange that they have all the same version, strange that what slash was saying back in the days (that axl was listening to NIN and wanting to sound like them) turned out to be TOTALLY TRUE.
Sorry but I see Slash, duff very coherent in their actions and words, axl is all about covering his own ass and blame someone else.

That's what I am saying. Most people here are with no mistake saying that "Axl Rose doesn't come out because is ultrasensitive and is afraid".
AXL ROSE AFRAID ?!?!?!?
No one would post that if they had read those lyrics you mentioned. Well, they haven't even listened to the albums anyway.
Axl Rose is a rebel. He does what he wants. He is not going to release the album if it doesn't feel right for him. He is not going to get up at 10 o'clock if he doesn't think is right. He is not going to suck a corporate cock and release another "Don't cry" just because the record company, the fans or the world ask him to do it. He would before die than be untrue to himself. He sacrificed GUNS N' ROSES to be true to himself. AND YOU ALL SHOULD RESPECT THAT. AND I LOVE HIM FOR THAT. HE IS TRUE TO HIMSELF IN A WORLD OF CORPORATE BULLSHIT POP THAT IS CALLED ROCK.
Did you hate guys even read the 1993 RIP interviews? I doubt it. I even doubt you know the fucking magazine.

"he had some press releases from 2001 on, so there were other chances to hear "his words"."
So you are proving my point. We have those "press releases" which are nothing like an interview. And then we have this few answers to fan questions... and we have LOTS AND LOTS of people speaking here theories of whatever issue with GUNS N' ROSES is and the truthful information has been short as hell. Last year Slash released a book. And that was about it for 14 years.
NO ONE KNOWS what went on on GUNS N' ROSES camp. Axl hasn't speak yet and here we are bashing him all the time and you know him from pictures. Don't fool me, bro. I have read more books, saw more DVDs and documentaries, read more interviews, and listen just a lot more of GUNS N' ROSES records, bootlegs or fucking demo tapes than you will able in the rest of your life. I have even done that (YES DONE IT ALREADY) even in a time where the internet didn't even have name. Those days. The old school days. Where getting a bootleg sometimes meant fight, kickteeth and blood and beer over the floor.

Maybe he broke down & retreated after being beat up by press, band, peers. I saw them in 1993, he got unmercifully booed for being a dick, which he was. He left for 20 minutes cuz the fans weren't into enough. Rebel my a$$...and he's NOT corporate? I love GnR, but that's about as corporate as Rock gets, they were a HUGE business. I do agree, he didn't give in to the label, called his own shots, but its Corporate rock, as is the new album. he jumped on to the trends of 1996, the marilyn manson, Limp Bizkit CORPORATE sound....I'd feel like a dink writing "get in the ring" & listening to it now. because you think that interviews with axl rose are not PRE-ARRANGED? GOD he used to prearrange interviews back in the 90s.
You think that any journalist can ask him whatever he wants? You are pretty delusional.
Spare me the holier than thou attitude. If you think a journalist that is allowed to stay near axl doesn't promise to write him only in positive light and skip the hard question you are delusional beyond any possible imagination.
His press releases are just like any interview, he basically says whatever he wants and ALWAYS adds: it's not my fault, slash is naughy, you are not intelligent enough to understand the situation and spin the above to no end.
Especially he likes to shut whatever you are trying to say with "you know nothing" kind of thing. He did also with me 2 years ago when I was factually saying something that was later proven to be true but still he liked to play the smartass and said "you know nothing". Axl also got so bloated by the end of GnR, the guy that was bad ass, tough & raw on stage had become Cher, costume changes, out of breath from sprinting on stage instead of singing, voice SHOT. Do you think he wrote all those songs? Genius. Genius's are brilliant innovators at what they do. Axl was great at what he did for a VERY short period, his output was great, rocking, but no innovation & he wasn't very prolific. Still isn't....yes, i wish I wasn't doing the 9-5 thing, good for him, but genius? Who else are genius' in the rock world to you? Jon Bonjovi?

We agree on a lot of things, however, I'd like to give my 2 cents on your theory that he didn't show up in 2002 because of bad reviews.
While it's a common known fact that he is able to do that, I suppose that it's more like the attitude of "I am a god and I can do whatever I want", his ego is so gigantic and his humblesness level is so close to zero that I don't even think negative reviews were the main problem.
When you are allowed to behave like a spoiled brat and nobody around is willing to confront you about it because everybody loves a paycheck especially leeches, you do not fear negative reviews.
Look at his words here in that "Q&A". He says that he always try to play in venues where he's allowed to go on late, then he blames the "greedy" promoters when this doesn't happen. What kind of fucked up idea is that? I am not talking about the fans, because I am personally the kind of person that is not bothered to see a show at 1 am, because I take a holiday off job if that what is needed, but if he was sincere about it, he would TRULY select only venues and promoters who allow that and he would PRINT on the ticket "show start at midnight".
That would be having balls, because you recognize you have this "problem" but you do something to fix it. The people wil decide if they want to stay there til 2am.
Instead he tells you he tries to make arrangements than (as usual) someone else fucks up because he's "greedy".
Cmon axl, try not to be the virgin in a brothel, if you weren't greedy too, how could you be at the "versace party"?
Summing it up, I think this is more to prove he is a rock god and can do whatever he wants, rather than being pissed at some negative reviews.
Right now the negative reviews of the cd outnumbers greatly the positive ones ( that are made by magazines PAID)

He was the frontman, maincomposer and quite a character of the last biggest Rock N' Roll band. You have issues when getting angry because he doesn' release the album when you want or do the things the way you want.

you simply aren't reading my posts. I get annoyed cuz I am NOT saying he should reunite. He should do his thing, go solo, all that. I don't think he should be w/Slash if they don't like each other...we've had so many different threads, but none have trashed his new album, or his decision to be solo. But I question people who say he's GnR, all that BS. That he's a rebel genius. He's a bully. Or was. He got WAY out of line, he became the poster child for overblown poser rockstars. No? I think that is fact. And it was deserved....I am asking you, what in your mind, makes him rock genius? Or just genius in general?....time doesn't matter, of course it does? he pissed away his prime years! Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Beatles, they created alot in short amount of years, their primes. Axl pissed this away. he's 46. Rock history, forget rock history, art history shows, almost without exception, people create their best works in the primes of their lives. 25-35, give or take. Do you agree with that? Yes, maybe a couple of exceptions, like Ron Jeremy.

COMMENT | . posted by : Basajaun 12/12/2008 5:03:58 PM
I think is you people who need to go back to reading class, first grade. My mom loves me. I love my mom.
What I was trying to explain is that having a mental disease (like Axl has or not) doesn't mean anything to became succesful in your life. Even when you also have to struggle against the people that, thinking they are the sane, right world, just puts more barricades on their way.
And was directed to all those to just post: "Axl is muts. He is a madaman and I hate him". Ridiculous.
Now back to work guys... My mon loves me. I love my mom.
"WHAT WOULD THE ROCK WORLD BE LIKE WITHOUT "BACK IN BLACK"?"
much better off, thank you very much. the title track is a rap song. imo it's that song that started the whole rap rock formula. the high school i attended my senior year (80/81) was pretty fucking segregated whites didn't listen to black musicians and blacks didn't listen to white musicians aka rock 'n' roll (which i thought was fuckt) but the black kids would openly rap the lyrics of BIB........unheard of at the time.
and just for the record, i highly doubt that was was howard hughes....i mean axl answering those questions. the answers sounded like something a political speech writer would come up with. not very axl-like considering all of his past incoherent and contradictory rants. but maybe he took 10 days worth of prozac to work himself up to doing it!
another btw, i'm no axl hater i just like to take pot shots at him because of all the kids that swing from his nuts and think he does no wrong.
and yet another btw.....
" What did you think of the "new Cars" with Todd Rundgren taking Ric Ocaseks place. Or Thin Lizzy on Tour this past year, & Lynott's dead? Or NEW QUEEN with Paul Rodgers. How about if Zep does go out as Zep with the Creed guitarist? Hey, you're living in the past if you don't get their new music & vision. you MUST accept this. "
It's not The Cars without Ric, IT DAMN SURE AIN'T THIN LIZZY WITHOUT PHIL LYNOTT!!!!! if i'm living in the past it's because that's where the truth lies. just because it's 2008 and the axl rose project wants the put CRAP out under the moniker GNR doesn't mean it isn't GNR in name only.
I wish people would have asked him about his friendship with The Trailer Park Boys crew and how he feels about the show being canceled.

While it's cute to see you pretending to be older than you are, you offer proof that classes nowadays are too big. Who do you consider to be great musicians: Katy Perry? Josh Groban? Tiestro?

i'm not pretending. whenever you can accept that, maybe i'll answer your question. thanks for the compliment though, even if it was a backhanded one. i am young for my age. and i even own the 1st PIL double album on vinyl but they don't have shit on the Pistols........ ;)

WARNING - the following paragraph(s) are going to form a rant, which might be silly, inconsequential hard to decipher, and rather boring to read, but is also an honest fan's opinion about what mr rose has to say.
Well dear old axl has resurfaced, if that is indeed him and pretty much he says nothin new. "The powers that may-be have lied to all of us...." he says .... he doesn't specify if he has more material, or confirm it, and then he blames people for the booklet and cover. The cover is HORRIBLE... it looks like something a hippywould have chosen...not like a gnr cover. and obviously this non simultaneous release of alternative covers, now sounds like a calculated move. They will possibly re-release the half-decent album with a bonus and a half-decent cover to offset some of the massive 14 mil (?!) costs/debts.....yawn... and what's that thing about the company not picking up a more up-to-date and correct booklet version ? didn't he give his final approval for the current one ? does he mean to say that the multi-million-mlti national companies behind this project failed to use the correct cover ? We're talking about a bloody courier taking a cdr accross to someone or an email.... F.G.Sake...
He's also uncertain (if that's genuinly him-talking) if he wants to tour with his current guitarist, if he wants bucket back.. maybe both... jesus.... and obvously apart from the obvious 2 lawsuits that could block him from releasing something under the gnr moniker - there's not much else.... admittedly the album was being overproduced all these years....and it was getting re-mixed even sometime late last year....
For Chi-demo to have been a good album GNR would have neededa STRONG MAN behind the steering wheel, a good producer/songwriter like mutt, or desmond or whoever else ..... a batch of HARD ROCK CLASSICS and not some rather overblown pop songs - with rob zombie riffs over them and some mindblowing but boring solos and annoying strings on top.... a million $ to record and another million or two to promote it and a decent marketing plan. plus a "better" cover.
This is all getting a little too boring. I mean the guy cannot even verify whether he's bipolar or not ... i know i m sometimes manic... the last time i left a company i tore down the walls, damaged the door, and smashed the chair on the floor to a thousand pieces, screaming in rage.....but i can easily admit that....and i could also say that i had a pretty good reason for doing that too....
As to what he says....about people wanting to know.... YES PEOPLE ARE CURIOUS, they would like to know, but while you say you agree that people should know - you then explain it's just such a lengthy rant and you might as well do another interview... explaining all THAT ... hey an exclusive one 'd fetch a pretty penny too, while people still give a damn..
Sweet jesus.... this is such a soap opera... Do a reality mr Rose... do whatever... you have to pay a "price" like Dee once said... and he was right... so as far as i am concerned, either rise to the occasion, or just keep that "safety" distance... between you and the world...
you're an idol to kids, for those old songs.... people would be talking about chi-dem and still display photos of the OLD LINE UP next to the news bits.... c'mon be smart... (those very kids - don't like K.West...musically...) )so it's great to hear that you're open minded...( but when that taste of yours trickles into the final result of what you call-ed a GNR album... and somewhat deviates it from what it should have been then that's not so cool for some of us fans out here... all those modern influences .... i mean, a classic band, that GNR supposedly is, doesn't need to follow trends n fads... cause it's supposed to DICTATE what's cool and what not !
I mean... the S.I was a stop-gap release an a boring one at that Oh my god, was just garbage, and Chi-dem is weak... So were the two VR albums for the matter....no better... they had no choruses to start with.......
meanwhile - some serious RnR bands are disolving .. and some good un's out there are being eclipsed by the leviathan that GNR is which is bloody unfair.....(obviously in my perfect little universe and according to my not so humble opinion) !!!
Should we get in the ring ??? What do ya say ?!?!?! Man'o'a mano... while manowar would be blasting out of the speakers all the way up to 11 ??? hahahaha !
NP H.ROCKS - A day late - a dollar short... ya !

Basically because he kept the GnR name and the fact so many different people have being attached to the album it has caused a massive amount of legal issues. He said that before he can give interviews he needs to know that whatever he says he is not going to get sued for. Just look at the fact the ex GnR manager was screwing around with old merch and not handing over what should have being handed over to the ex band members.
It already came out that much of the artwork Axl wanted the artist was scared to sell because of his government.
As for the whole arive on stage late. ANyone who followed the 2006 tour would know he gets on stage around 11:45-midnight for almost all the shows.
As for media bullshit about canceled shows in 2006 GnR canceled less shows then NIN has in 2008.

Some of his comments remind me of Dave Mustaine, where the blame goes to everyone but Ol' Axl. The album isn't bad, I like it, but it should be an Axl Rose album, not Guns N' Roses.

"For now, we'll concentrate and keep our focus on this album, but I will say I've always thought of it as a double. And no offense, but no one's trying to talk in parables. The issues are a bit more complex than anyone would like."
"Unbeknownst to most of you, I was recently sued again by [former GUNS N' ROSES members] Duff [McKagan] and Slash for some murky Merckiness that I was unaware and not involved in."
"What I can say now is you've been told a lot of things in order for others to promote themselves that factually they cannot back up in regard to either. They are complicated legally, financially and have devoured a good portion of my life."
Boo hoo. Unbeknownst to you, we do remember the old band's faces, so being sued over 90's posters for the 06 European tour promotion is nothing to complain about. Dude, draw your own fucking relevant logo, and come up with good music. Interestingly, Axl, your lyrics on Streets of Dreams are as telling about the "lies" that fans have been subjected to about the original band's breakup... 99 cents on iTunes. I am a fan!

COMMENT | Axl: why have you turned GnR into a ballad band? posted by : nodeerforamonth 12/13/2008 11:01:07 AM
Why all the ballads? "Chinese Democracy" sounds like a really bad Elton John or Billy Joel record!

i've read enough of your posts that indicate the same could be said for you. if i need to grow up then you need to grow a fucking brain, snot nose.
