GUNS N' ROSES Tour To Kick Off Late March?
- Dec. 27, 2008
|
|
GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Richard Fortus has told TheTelegraph.com that the band's world tour in support of "Chinese Democracy" should start late March and will likely last at least two years. Fortus will take part in a one-night-only reunion of PALE DIVINE, a.k.a. THE EYES, a mega-popular St. Louis, Missouri alt-rock act that broke through nationally in the early '90s. The original four members — vocalist Michael Schaerer, Fortus, bass player Dan Angenend Jr. and drummer Greg Miller — will take the stage at The Pageant in St. Louis at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, after not playing together for 17 years. GUNS N' ROSES' new album, "Chinese Democracy", sold 56,000 copies in the United States in its fourth week of release to land at position No. 33 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD has shifted 421,000 units since it was released on November 23 as a Best Buy exclusive after a wait of more than 15 years. Kevin Cogill, who was arrested in August for allegedly leaking nine tracks from the then-unreleased "Chinese Democracy" album online through his blog, pleaded guilty violating federal copyright laws in a Los Angeles court on December 15. According to the Associated Press, Cogill's plea deal requires him to cooperate with investigators and may lead to a sentence of up to a year in federal prison, probation and a large fine.

Alright...enough with the Axl is God crap. Anybody know if the tour is gonna be for real? Seems like whenever GNR comes any where near my town, something happens. Axl has a shit fit, the promoter cancels, etc. etc. Last time they had a gig booked, it was cancelled THE DAY OF THE FRIGGIN SHOW!! The excuse was some kind of "fire code violation", with the fire marshall and the band, all pointing fingers at each other. Anyway, I would like to see the band, cause it's been a long time. But Jesus Christ, somebody has got to get Axl to man-up,and stop cancelling gigs every time he has a little shit fit over something.

While the record does have it's 'well, this is crap' moments, it is not a completely horrid record at all. And while I don't know it's current status so far as sales go, I do know it has achieved at least gold status in quite a few major markets.

..."GNR" already had a Chinese Democracy tour. It was in 2002 or something like that. Axl is retarded: why have a tour for an album SIX YEARS BEFORE it actually comes out?
BTW, pigchop, the US sales figures are above: 421,000 units. Meaning it probably will go gold in a few weeks if sales don't drastically slow down. Platinum looks difficult though...

Those sale figures aren´t impressive at all, for the worlds most anticipated album according to several big newspapers. Both Metallica and AC/DC have crushed Axl. Both AC/DC and Metallica sell more and they have been out for a longer time. Chinese Democrasy came, and fell like a bomb.

Those who will get a concert ticket have already bought the album. Its not a mainstream album so i can´t see the big audiences buy the album. It would have sold more on Walmart than Best Buy but everyone could order it online. The sale figures around the world aren´t that impressive either, and the album is available everywhere there.

chinese democracy has held steady at 50 k plus the last 3 weeks which show people are liking what they hear on the radio. no major promotion like metallica, gnr will hang on the charts for 2 yrs with people buying it up evertime a new ballad is released.
in the end chinese democracy will be the big album out of all 3 and death cranetic will be held in the same lite as st crapper!

Yes, I know. As I said to polimar, I was speaking of world wide sales. So far as platinum goes in the USA, I think it will eventually reach that level...at some point after the tour has been going on awhile - assuming it does not fall apart shortly after take-off.

Umm, no. Get your facts straight, please. Yes, Guns was only coming on around 11 but that's because there were three opening acts on the tour. I don't know why you think the opening act ended at 9 and there was nothing for two hours, that is simply not true. It was a full six hour show and it was fantastic.
If the show goes too late for all you cry-baby whiners, either: a) ask your mommy if you can stay home from school the next day or b) wake up and realize that you don't belong at a rock concert.

Its sold over 2 million copies.
Best Buy bought 1.6 million copies. Has sold 450K of them. World wide its sold 1.1 million. Subtract the 450K from Best Buy in the US = 660K or so.
1.6 + .6 = 2.2 million
They will do regular interviews later. And videos and shit. Take a long view. It will be successful. It is refreshing.
But I thought nobody here cared.

WTF is up with this endless sales analysis? Its all very simple:
1) the "Guns 'N Roses" CD sales suck because its NOT a Guns 'N Roses CD; its an Axl Rose solo album.
2) the Metallica CD is doing excellent because St Anger was the biggest disappointment in history and ANY improvement would make DM the album of the year.
3) AC/DC is kicking everyone's ass in sales because its their first album in 8 long years and everyone has a hard on for the new album.
Its not rocket science!
metallica is still about 700 thousand cppies away from the 1.9 million st crapper sold in the usa and chances are that they will just barley reach theat number with this shit in about 2 yrs from now, so how is it exellent?

"YOU will care when you're paying $30 for a CD or album download."
Uh... in case you haven't noticed, the price of music has been going DOWN, not up.
I don't support illegal downloading, but there is a reason for it: music has been overpriced for years. The record industry fully deserves this situation. History: they invented the CD, then sold it at double the price that cassettes and vinyl was going for, saying it would go down later. Fair enough--let the public decide which format they would pay which price for, right? NO! In a very short time, you couldn't even buy vinyl or cassettes of most albums. In other words, consumers were totally shafted.
After that, the Internet was sweet revenge. The industry keeps crying over illegal downloading, but they invented the format that made it possible, they doubled the price of music, making people less able to afford it. It wouldn't have even been so bad if most of the money had been going to the artists, but in many situations, literally pennies of yer 15 bucks went to the artists.
Now the price of music is going down because the music industry is being forced to listen to consumers. You won't hear me sniveling and crying over that.

"Uh... in case you haven't noticed, the price of music has been going DOWN, not up."
Uh, in case you haven't noticed, concert ticket prices have been skyrocketing. The music industry is not "being forced to listen to consumers." They only found a new way to make up for their losses caused by dickheads like the one who leaked Axl's album.

Hey, yer original quote said "paying 30 for a CD or a download." Once again, exactly the opposite is happening. You can get good-quality remastered CDs on Amazon these days for as low as about 6 bucks sometimes. A lot of albums are going for about 10 bucks. This is still expensive, but it's a huge improvement over 10-15 years ago when everything cost about 15 bucks, especially considering the price of everything else has been going up due to inflation.
The-Sane-Asylum, I see yer point, but the lower prices are a deliberate move by an industry that realizes that people simply won't pay for overpriced music anymore. They certainly out doing it out of altruism, but when faced with extinction, SOME industries will try to change. Personally, I don't illegally download music, but you won't hear me complaining about it either, because without it, CDs would still cost 15 bucks.
As for ticket prices, a couple of problems w/yer argument, MetallicaPuppet: 1). The concert industry is not the same thing as the record industry--connected, yes, but not the same thing. 2). "Concert prices have been skyrocketing" sounds like this is something new that has been caused by illegal downloading. Dude, the price of concerts has been going up unreasonably since way before illegal downloading even came into play.
Here's the problem with blaming illegal downloading for everything: as a music fan, the music industry has been screwing YOU up the yin-yang for as long as you've been listening to music. They LOVE people to think that everything is because of illegal downloading, because that takes the blame off of them. I'm not saying that illegal downloading is good, but it is a completely inevitable and predictable result of a situation that the record industry itself created. They screwed the consumers so hard that they ended up killing the golden goose in the process, and now they want us to cry for them. Fuck 'em, I say. Cry me a river so that I can piss in it.
I suspect that in 10 years, most of the albums I buy will be downloaded legally from my favorite artists' websites, for 5 bucks a pop... and the real wonderful irony is that far more of the money I pay will be going to the artists than does now, even though I'm paying more money now. Cut out the middleman, let the record industry bureaucrats get real jobs for a change.

That is perhaps the most ridiculous thing you have said yet. And that's saying something, because you talk nothing but shit every other day of the week too.

You're kind of making my point for me. I'm not saying that artists get ripped off by touring: in fact, if anything they are ripping off the consumers.
What I was originally responding to was puppet's "YOU will care when you're paying $30 for a CD or album download." Recorded music is a different issue, and I think he's barking up the wrong tree here if he's worried about CD prices. CDs were overpriced long before illegal downloading came in--in fact, it was overpriced CDs plus the Internet that made illegal downloading inevitable. If anything, illegal downloading is making recorded music cheaper, not more expensive, for people who actually buy music.
I can see one possible argument for a connection between overpriced tickets and illegal downloading though: you could say "artists charge too much for concert tix because they can't make money off album sales anymore." There is probably SOMETHING to that argument... the problem is, record companies traditionally give the artists such a pathetic percentage from whatever you pay from an album that it's a mistake to think that the average artist ever made much from album sales anyway. Yes, huge bands with good contracts did, but most had to rely on touring and royalties.
I'm actually hoping that the record companies are just going to die a deserved death, and that technology will keep making it easier for artists just to sell music directly to their fans. It's a win-win situation: for example, when Radiohead let fans decide what to pay for their album, a lot of people chose to get it for free, but the average "contribution" was still 5 or 6 bucks, almost all which went directly to the band. By all indications, they actually made a huge amount of money.
Now, just maybe if we can get rid of the record companies taking most of the profits from music sales, then artists would be able to charge reasonable prices for concert tix. Of course, the record industry is scared shitless by the idea of their becoming obsolete, so they want everybody to blame it on illegal downloading. They've been crying the same story since affordable blank cassettes came out in the 1970 ("Home taping is killing music!"). They are dinosaurs and we'll be better off when they die.

"in the end chinese democracy will be the big album out of all 3 and death cranetic will be held in the same lite as st crapper!"
I don't think that Chi-Dem is such a horrible album, and I appreciate that a lot of work went into it.
Having said that, it IS funnier than hell that the nutswingers, after having predicted that Chi-Dem would be a massive, crushing worldwide hit, are now making the same kind of overblown claims about what will happen if nu-GNR actually tours. You people really like looking like idiots, don't ya?
I also love the "it took a long time for Appetite to become a hit too" line. The reason why it took a long time for Appetite to become a hit was because GNR WAS AN OBSCURE BAND when it came out. I mean, I had barely heard of GNR in 1987, but then I saw them opening for Maiden and thought they kicked ass, so I bought the album.
The situation w/Chi-Dem is totally different: every rock fan on planet earth knows it's out, it's just the most people have decided it's not worth paying money for. A tour will help sales, but it's very unlikely to make it into a hit.
Face is: Axl's shot his wad, folks. Every one of his nutswingers went out and bought 10 copies when it came out, and now they are all out of allowance money. As I said, the album will probably reach platinum someday, but even looking at worldwide sales, it's unlikely to sell one-tenth of what AFD did.

"....if we can get rid of the record companies taking most of the profits from music sales, then artists would be able to charge reasonable prices for concert tix."
Okay we now have your confession that low record sales cause bands to make up for their losses with skyrocketing ticket sales; losses include those caused by the dickhead who leaked Axl's recent solo album...wouldn't you agree that after hearing the 9 leaked songs that some fans decided NOT to buy the album at the record store? And let's simplify this discussion by revisiting my original response to your comment: "YOU will care when you're paying $30 for a CD or album download." You seem to be reading your crystal ball but are you saying that a $30 CD is impossible? LOL! Just go on eBay and look at what Japanese pressings of Death Magnetic CDs are going for; fans are ALREADY paying $30 to $45 a copy! You don't think American CD pressings won't someday follow this example if the "music industry" gets geedy enough? Get rid of your crystal ball!

I liked Chi-Dem. But I won't be going to this unlesss Axl is going on stage at an appropiate time every night and he makes up for being a douchebag by making tickets affordable.
Since Metallicas not making up for the clipping magnetic debacle, im not seeing them either or supporting them again until they do.
ha, just mentioned Metallica in a GNR thread agiain!
