METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: Getting SLAYER Into 'Guitar Hero' Was A Challenge - Dec. 30, 2008
According to Ars Technica, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has told Game Informer magazine that SLAYER's addition to the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica game brought some headaches due to content.

"I'm super psyched we got SLAYER in there," Ulrich said. "SLAYER's got to be part of any heavy metal video game. There had been some issues with their lyrics. That gets into a whole slew of stuff like, 'Microsoft won't do it if this lyrical content is in there.' There's all this bullshit you have to deal with, but we stood up for SLAYER, and we finally got SLAYER cleared like a week ago."

Guitar Hero: Metallica is expected in the first half of 2009 for the PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, and Nintendo Wii. The group is only the second act to get its own version of Guitar Hero, following this year's AEROSMITH game. METALLICA frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse of Radio some of the reasons why his band has embraced the video game phenomenon. "A lot of kids that maybe wanted to play guitar, or even, especially adults that wanted to play guitar and never did, they're getting a chance to somewhat live a little bit of that in their living room or whatever it is," he said. "And it's a good way to get your music out there. With all the big record stores closing up, getting music to people, it's getting a little limiting. But there are many places, new places to explore, and one of them is Guitar Hero."

METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo told The Pulse of Radio about the extensive motion-capture process that the band has to go through in order to make them come to life in the game. "We're basically in wetsuits, and you've got all these little tassels, what would be like tassels on your body, that helps trigger the image in the computer," he said. "It's like a performance in a wetsuit, so you're very hot, you're up there, you're headbanging, you're under the lights, but it's a workout. You know, they usually want you to do a song, like, five times or more, so it's a lot of work."

The post at the METALLICA web site revealed that the new game "allows you to play as us in either single instrument or band career game modes in your choice of some famous settings or new venues with in-the-round staging."

The game will include 28 METALLICA songs, as well as tracks from ALICE IN CHAINS, FOO FIGHTERS, QUEEN, MACHINE HEAD and others.

According to gaming site 1UP.com, Guitar Hero: Metallica will include a new difficulty level for drummers, featuring double bass drum pedals, along with new METALLICA guitar tones.

With record stores nearing extinction, mtv no longer playing videos, most schools don't have good music programs anymore and concert tickets too expensive for many, do you have a better idea to get kids hooked on hard rock and metal? No? I didn't think you did.

Besides, Guitar Hero World tour is a fun way for my wife, six year old son and I to have fun together. My kid is getting into this music because of the game, and now wants me to get him a real guitar for his birthday next year. With Guitar Hero we have a totally worthwhile video game that can lead to kids learning how to express themselves creatively. That, and old farts like me that never learned how to play anything more complicated than air guitar have a really cool outlet to rock out. And I think many of you will agree that the Death Magnetic mix for Guitar Hero is way better than on disc.

Guitar Hero is cool as hell.

Actually i think its cool. Its a fuck of a lot better than if it was Hip Hop Hero or something. If GH is getting kids into Sabbath, Purple, Metallica, Slayer, etc etc...i would say thats a good thing and about time that they were exposed to something a little more than the Jonas Bros, or Hannah Montana, or Hip Hop shit. I hope that these kids will be inspired to pick up a REAL guitar ( or drums) and start the next great metal band!

My 16-month old son likes actual music - and headbangs to metal with me. Sure, one day he may want to play a game like this.... but to think a game will turn someone into a metalhead??? Come on dude...
Like most video games, this "franchise" will be dead in less than 10 years and people will have moved on to something else.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are great.

As a guitar teacher, it's great to have 9 year old kids wanting to learn "Rainbow In The Dark" and "Master Of Puppets" simply because they learned about the song through a game.

When most of us old fuckers were 9, we we're lucky to be exposed to such music because it certainly wasn't being played on MTV (it was all Michael Jackson and Stray Cats and Madonna back then). It definitely wasn't on the radio.

You had to go and discover it yourself.

The brilliance of the franchise creators has established a way for artists to expose their music to countless millions who may have stayed under the rock they were living under, and it gives those who are either young or oblivious an opportunity to discover something great... music.

Don't just bash just to be "cool" 'cause that's lame.

It may be gone in 10 years or so, because it is a trend and fad, but something else will have taken it's place that will probably at that time be much better and technologically advanced.

Just think about how it wasn't too long ago we were playing games like "Combat" and "Adventure" and "Pitfall" and they were the coolest games on the planet (yeah... you have to be a certain age to appreciate that - you know we're in adult diapers now).

jesus christ...please tell me you are some how being sarcastic and ironic...

when a band records, they not only usually do their rhythm guitar parts separately (laying the solos afterwards), but it might not even be while the rest of the band is playing! omg!

wow you might even hear more than 2 rhythm guitars going at it ala 'tallica's Battery! Doesn't mean there's 4 guitar players playing at the same time...

and as far as the scream Tom hasn't done that scream since 1987...if you listen to Decade of Agression he doesn't even do it then...it's been 20+ years people...

all of that said, i feel dumber than half of these comments for even feeling compelled to address these issues...and interesting as someone else pointed out, Raining Blood was on GH III...maybe Necrophiliac is on this Metallica game heh ;)

No way was that not Slayer playing those leads on Reign in Blood. Hanneman and King have a very distinctive lead style that sounds similar on every album for one thing. Another thing is that of course the overall tonality of the leads and the echo/reverb is different than the rhythms - that's ALWAYS the case. Not many others use the same violent, sloppy out of key/in key whirlwind leads like Hanneman and King. Only those guys do. Rhythm and lead tones are always different.

If it was a virtuoso like Malmsteen or MacAlpine playing those leads on Reign in Blood, then I could see how they weren't coming from the Slayer dudes...

Slayer fans have the same issue. No matter what Metallica does for Slayer, or how they NEVER shit talk Slayer, the Slayer family will remain the same classless bunch they have been for two decades.

Telling someone who plays Guitar Hero to "just go get a real guitar and become a real rock star" is like telling someone who plays Madden to "just go get a real football and become a real NFL quarterback"

Becoming a famous musician who plays in arenas is a very hard thing to accomplish... sometimes people might just want to enjoy a simulation that makes them feel like rock gods for a few hours, instead of working their ass off for years just to get a small chance at it.

and i bet if Kerry King wanted to make some more money he would have played in somee commercial pop/rock band. but i bet he has enough money as it is and Slayer are always Slayer, not trying to be someone else to sell more albums or whatever. they know they wont sell millions and they seem to be fine with it. and yea im fine with it too, if i buy a slayer album i get a Slayer album.

To those who bash Guitar Hero... why? It's a video game. It's meant to be fun and relaxing. A lot of *bands* enjoy playing it themselves.

I've never met one person who thought they could play a real guitar because they can play GH well. I have met a number of people who have started to appreciate music more, and get into older or heavier bands than they would have otherwise.

A friend from work, because of the game his son got into Dragonforce. From there he ended up seeking out other heavier music and now listens to bands like Amon Amarth. Not only that, it got him interested in actually learning to play a real guitar, so I sold him mine.

You're the same people who complain about the kids who wear "mallcore" band shirts, then when they get an opportunity to be exposed to other, better bands... you shit all over it. Or GH is a pile of shit because someone who has never picked up a real guitar or drum kit plays it.

Exposure is a good thing.
