AC/DC, METALLICA Among Best-Selling Albums Of 2008 - Dec. 31, 2008
Billboard.com reports that AC/DC and METALLICA's latest releases were among the Top 10 best-selling albums of 2008. According to Nielsen SoundScan, AC/DC's Wal-Mart-exclusive release, "Black Ice" (Columbia), sold 1.92 million copies to rank No. 5 for the year. It was also held back from digital retailers. METALLICA's "Death Magnetic" (Warner Bros.) came in at No. 7 with 1.57 million

In 2008, there were 428.4 million albums sold, down 14.4% compared to 2007's 500.5 million. Digital downloads of albums accounted for 65.79 million albums this year, or 15.4% of the overall album market. In 2007, digital albums sold 50.01 million and represented 10% of the album market.

Slowly, but certainly more then surely the digital music releases will eclipse the physical CD sales, it's only a matter of time and everybody knows this... Whether or not these numbers will increase exponentially each year is going to have to be remained to be seen...

Two great albums from two legendary bands who both put in the work and promoted the fuck out of each of their respective releases with music videos, interviews and promos and oh yeah, not to mention the all important TOURING! Not gonna vent about my favourite band who didn't do any of this for the most part, but that's for another Blabbermouth shit talk session anyway... Horns up and happy new year everybody! \m/

If Metallica were to provide (on their web site) audio comparisons of the retail (shit sandwich) version of Death Magnetic and the Moderus Remaster II (version of Death Magnetic), I would be willing to bet that a far greater number of people would choose the Moderus version over the audio obscenity Metallica signed off on.

And of course...I am correct about that.

I agree with you. I personally prefer the Cd with the booklet and the lyrics. I noticed all the Best Buys near me have cut their CD floor space by one-third or one-half what it was earlier in the year. I recently stumbled across Omega Order for CD's. The prices aren't bad but it's not as quick as running out to the local store.

Yes, Protest The Hero made a great record in their efforts for "Fortress." Just because Metallica are not the fastest, heaviest or thrashiest band anymore does not mean that they cannot show the younger guys a thing or two. I am not saying Metallica are killer anymore. I didn't get into metal until I turned 13 in 2000. I am still learning. I do, however, believe that Pantera are, were and forever will be the Kings of Metal! \m/

we're the king's hands down. They seriously had no equal. All bands new or old school should be happy they are NOT around anymore. Becuase if they we're they'd all be getting there "arse handed to em" as they say.

Rockers so high up among all the hip hop and shit.

World figures:

AC/DC,Black Ice: 4,8 million, third on the list

Metallica,Death Magnetic: 3,5 million, eight on the list
They are truly stars all over the world.

One funny thing. Kid Rock has sold 2,6 million this year of Rock n´roll jesus. 2,5 million of those is in the States. I see why he wont tour Europe, just like hip hop and country bums.

The Moderus II mix of Death Magnetic is even worse than the first one. There is hardly any mid-range on it at all. I guess that's nice, if you think AJFA is the best-sounding Metallica album... (best album maybe, but not best-sounding). Redskull's mix is the best I have heard by a mile.

Both albums deserved good sales I guess, although Black Ice is really just the same stuff ACDC has been doing since forever.

Both are long established bands one a a bar band and one a thrash prototype - let's celebrate the fact that there is hope for metal notwithstanding the purists - saw metallica in '84 and DC in '81 and think it is about time metal had some recognition.

LET'S BE UNITED!!

let's take a moment to salute all the bands, metal or otherwise, that cared about their music and packaging and the fans, gave it all they got and cranked out good music to keep rock 'n roll alive (even it's not really evolving right now). And if they reached high marks in terms of sales like AC/DC and Metallica, well, good for them.

I'm gonna salute all you awesome bands that are still making records, regardless of sales (like Toxic Holocaust, just to name one)!

BEST RELEASES OF THE YEAR

1. DEICIDE-TILL DEATH DO US PART
2. HATE ETERNAL-FURY AND FLAMES
3. SIX FEET UNDER
4, KATAKLYSM
5. SLIPKNOT
6. BENEATH THE MASSACRE

The only good song off the new metallica was the day that never comes. ACDC is garbage, garbage garbage. Cant wait till new Cannibal Corpse comes out beating the fuck out of all this classic/metalcore/deathcore bullshit infesting the internet

like T.Moner to seriously.

She cries over mediocre sales for the worlds most anticipated album of all time, and than complains over two albums she hasn´t even listened to.

Well at least i have listened to axl`s album so i can give my rightly deserved opinion that it is truly a stinker.

I kinda like going to a local music store, and taking my time pawing through all the cd and record bins. You never know what you might find. As far as new releases, I like having the store bought cd to have in the collection, and read the liner notes, admire the artwork, etc. Downloading stuff just seems to suck the joy out of the music buying experience.

Pantera is awesome , but they are not the kings. If u think they are the kings and u just don't know Metal then dude. Because Pantera couldn't make it that long cuz of Phil Anselmo was on the edge and u and anybody else can talk crap about James Hetfield the way he was, but i never recall the Mighty Hetfield overdosing or being a ticking timebomb Phil started to be in Pantera. Like i said Pantera is awesome and very heavy, but Metallica always was and always will be the KINGS OF HEAVY METAL! They were there before Pantera and are here now way after Pantera! But i'll forgive u though since you're still learning
