Axl Rose does not deserve to be anywhere near the top 10. Here is what my top 5 greatest rock voice list would look like.
1. Bret Michaels 2. Andrew WK (his 5 octave range gives me chills) 3. Fred Durst 4. Scott Stapp 5. Kylie Minogue (do the locomotion with me...unreal vocals).

OK I think we need to read the news article here...its compiled by Planet Rock listeners. For those who dont know, Planet Rock plays mainly what they call 'classic rock'....for those who choose not to venture past around 1985 musically. There would be a national outcry if they ever dared to play Nevermore so what chance Manowar?? To hear Manowar on Planet Rock would be like hearing Cradle of Filth on BBC Radio 4.

Janis and Neil have awesome voices. If you're just talking about people who can sing well in a classical style, well then...whatever. But having a distinctive voice that carries emotion is what it's all about.
That being said, Bon Scott should be in the #1 spot.
Robert Plant is a turd of a singer. Heh.

Retarded bullshit list, it's just another popularity list. Papa Roach singer Jacoby Shaddix should be number 1!!!! or Fred Durst!!!, they suck equally.
No, but truth be told Chris Cornell is the best singer to ever walk this earth, in every single aspect. Range, expression, tone quality etc. Also Tony Harnell so belong on that list...
Of course there are some singers on that list that deserves to be there, but 90% of it is just about popularity.

are fun but silly. Especially when the lists come from the UK, its like a metal list. Dickenson is a fine metal singer(I think he's goofy, opera fake singing, but...), but having him that high...Jon Bon jovi shouldn't make any list, never mind be ahead of Tyler. He's not a better techncial singer than Tyler or a better performer, or as influenctial, nothing, he's KING of the posers. HOW did Jon Bon get the pass to have a career yet all his peers in hair metal didn't? He IS the King of hair fluff rock. he now thinks he's bruce springsteen & pretends teh 80's didn't happen.

His hair is perfect, but he's a Plant wanna-be hack...except for the Burn album. Queen is HUGE in britain, not that they aren't in U.S. and A, but they are so reverred there. They are great, but I think time is being too kind to them. A tale of 2 bands, great rockers, lots of fluff too, radio ga-ga etc.

I'm surprised he's not on the list just for who he is. wether you like him or not, he's more influential then the majority of these guys. He had a good raspy/rough scream. He gets overrated most the time, but now there seems to be a backlash against him. Their legacy is too overrated, but the more I look at this list, its like a 14 year old wrote it. But maybe that's best, they think less about "what's cool", like the silly Rolling stone top 100 singers, which completely ignores Ian Gillan cuz he's "hard Rock".....who you like as a singer is SO subjective, most rock singers are technically great(Freddie is an exception), & most times when a rock singer sings technically well it sucks the rock out of it, makes it whimpy, like Journey. I'll take it rough & ready most the time.

What was so amazing about Kurt Cobain's voice and what influence did he have on anyone except for a bunch of depressed kids who eventually ruined Grunge and developed EMO?
Cobain was influenced by others before him and you can hear it in all of his songs. He was not innovative at all. He took rock, punk, folk and Lennon/Beatles influences and mashed them altogether. He also borrowed from Zeppelin's light and shade approach. Nirvana was all about timing not originality.
Also no one noticed they said Ian Anderson of Yes. Ian was the singer in Jethro Tull and Jon Anderson was the singer in Yes.

I'm not a fan of cobain, I was just saying in respects to the others on the list, he makes every list cuz he is overrated. I was surprised not to see him. BUT, no matter if you don't like the bands he influenced(I don't), he did cause a outbreak of bands with his vocal styles. Just like Eddie VH, I like him alot, dislike 99% of his clones. Same with Plant's clones. ..and of course he was influence by others...anyhow, I'm not pro cobain anyhow. Staley, good choice for modern day hard rocker, & he can HOWL!

I like the list but it's hard to decipher whether "great" is defined more by voice quality and technical ability or by how influential the vocalist is in the rock world.
For instance, I love David Lee Roth, he's obviously hugely influential, but his voice alone does not get him on this list. In the same category as Roth, I'd put Axl Rose, Jon Bon Jovi and definitely Neil Young (cheers to the author of the "screwing cats" remark above).
Conversely, as some have noted, Geoff Tate, who is less influential, is not even on the list despite having what I think is one of the best voices in rock. Plus I think many of the vocalists on this list would be much higher ranked if voice quality was the sole criteria (Chris Cornell, Sammy Hagar, Meat Loaf, Geddy Lee)
Then you've got guys like Freddie Mercury, who belong on the list no matter the criteria. He was a pure showman with the voice of an angel.
IMHO, top ten from the list, if based on voice alone would be:
1. Freddy Mercury 2. Robert Plant 3. Chris Cornell 4. Sammy Hagar 5. Meat Loaf 6. Rob Halford 7. Steve Perry 8. David Coverdale 9. Geddy Lee (just because his voice is so damn unique) 10. Peter Gabriel
*** Going off the list, I'd slide Geoff Tate in at #2.

Of all people you are discussing who is the best, both the list and everybody here is forgetting JORN LANDE. His voice speaks for itself.

1. Axl Rose 2. Freddie Mercury 3. Robert Plant 4. David Coverdale 5. Bruce Dickinson
Paul Rodgers is ok, but is funny to be in top 10 !!!
Mick Jagger is not seriously to be in top 50, he is the one of the best frontmen !
But AXL is the KING !!!

This list is a joke. What the hell..... Where is Noddy Holder from SLADE? Where is Brian Ferry? Where is Russel Mael from SPARKS? Where is David Byron from URIAH HEEP?
Common guy, you should know rock music better...
