GUNS N' ROSES, AC/DC, LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH Classics Among 'Greatest Hard Rock Songs' - Jan. 3, 2009
This past week, VH1 paid tribute to the ultimate rock gods by counting down the "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs". The five-part compilation, hosted by POISON singer Bret Michaels, featured the most awesome guitar-driven, head-banging jams in rock history — from AC/DC to LED ZEPPELIN and everything in between. VH1 took viewers behind-the-scenes of the greatest hard rock hits with special rarely-seen footage and brand new exclusive interviews with rock's most famous faces. METALLICA, MÖTLEY CRÜE, NIRVANA, THE WHO, VAN HALEN, and LED ZEPPELIN are just some of the legendary artists that were profiled.

Each new hour-long episode of VH1's "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs" premiered on Monday, December 29 - Friday, January 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The series gave viewers the chance to rock out to the 100 best and most influential hard rock songs of all time. Along with the revelation of each anthem's back-story, the five-night event also featured updates on where various rock idols are today. The countdown allowed viewers to reminisce about the glory days of guitar smashing and party crashing, roadies and groupies, and everything else hard rock stands for.

AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun
Alice In Chains - We Die Young
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Pearl Jam - Jeremy
Queen - We Are The Champions
Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
Van Halen - Jump
Whitesnake - Love Ain't No Stranger
Winger - Miles Away

That's not meaning all the songs above are the best ones, but in my opinion deserve more the "classic" status, that even my mother can recognize them...

So, here I go...

-KISS should be in the top 10 (at least) with Rock N Roll All Night

-It's time Black Sabbath trumped Zeppellin on one of these lists. Also, Iron Man is probably a slightly better song than 'Paranoid'. The fact that it isn't here is just stupid.

-Hendrix should have been represented by 'Purple Haze' and NOT a song he didn't write.

-How THE FUCK does pop crap like Pat Benetar, Foriegner and Foghat make the lsist, but NOT the fucking Rolling Stones???

-Aerosmith should certainly trump Nirvana and with a better song than 'Walk This Way'.

-Skid Row '18 and Life'??? Um, what???

-One KISS song? One Aerosmith song? One Dio song?

-Velvet Fucking Revolver??? Does anyone still listen to that shit?

There, I'm done. On the positive side, they put Motorhead on the list and in the top 10. Props!

-Andrew WK, Kid Rock, and Buckcherry have NO place on such a list.

-Of all the STP songs to include, 'Interstate Love SOng'?

-'Welcome to the Jungle' is great and icomic and all that...but number 1?

It's a ROCK list, not a METAL list. That's why there's no Pantera, Exodus, Anthrax, Kreator or Flotsam & Jetsam. Yes, I know Black Sabbath is very high on the list, but when Paranoid came out, there wasn't such a thing as "heavy metal" or "metal". Now, in 2009, we call it metal. But back in the seventies, it was called hard rock.

As far as these lists go, I think it's a very nice one. At least they included Tush, instead of the horrible overplayed Eliminator songs (yes, I'm looking at you VH1).
Agree with shattered73. There should be more Kiss songs in this list.

REMEMBERING PHILIP PARRIS LYNOTT
20th August 1949 - 4th January 1986

23 years already since Phillip Parris Lynott left us. Do yourself and the world a favor and blast some THIN LIZZY.

A Song for While I’m Away
These words I wrote, play and sing to you
Do not convey the love I brought and bring to you
For this is a song for while I'm away
To say all the things I'd love to say

You are my life, my everything, you're all I have
You are my hopes, my dreams, my world come true
You're all I have
Please heed me now these words I have to say

Now I'm headed for the border
You see this song it ends right at the start
I swore when I was younger
No one would win my heart

And far away hills look greener still
But soon they'll all slip away
It's then I'll be returning
And I'll be coming home to stay

You are my life, my everything, you're all I have
You are my hopes, my dreams, my world come true
You're all I have
Please heed me now these words I have to say

THIN LIZZY FOREVER !!!

All these songs are "mainstream". Everyone's heard them. Why not pick songs that are less known? It's simple. That's too hard. Going through the complete catalog of Sabbath, Metallica, Maiden, etc WITHOUT picking the songs they're best known for is too hard for these people. Too much effort.

Why Sabbath isn't number one is beyond me.

"Welcome to the Jungle" is over played and I think the song is annoying now because of that.

I'm at odds with their pick of "Freebird" from Skynrd. It's a great song, but I think "Simple Man" is better.

Whoever came up with this shitty list needs to have their head examined.

Whenever a "100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs" list is put together it seems like the list is compiled by rolling stone subscribers and rikki (i was popular..once) rachtman. my thoughts:

07. NIRVANA - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
possibly the most overrated song in history. NOT hard rock, sorry.

28. FOO FIGHTERS - "Everlong"
beer commercial background music

30. PEARL JAM - "Evenflow"
again severely overrated and NOT rock. crying mid 90's alternative does NOT count once and for all

33. GREEN DAY - "Basket Case"
mall punk

47. KID ROCK - "Bawitdaba"
laughable that a rap rock abortion gets any attention at all from anyone. first this then country now singing a ballad pick a format dirtbag

48. KORN - "Freak On A Leash"
just don't get it maybe since I'm not a 14 year old boy

50. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - "Give It Away"
not even remotely rock and barely qualifies as music. this babble is a fave amongst people that are told this is actually good

54. FAITH NO MORE - "Epic"
nearly the same as above with a guitar. that whiny voice is obnoxious. flash in the pan back in '90

71. JANE'S ADDICTION - "Mountain Song"
alternative NOT rock at all

89. ANDREW W.K. - "Party Hard"
a joke of a novelty and a bad one at that. I'd rather hear Sam Kinison do Wild Thing

90. JETHRO TULL - "Aqualung"
obviously an inside joke to piss off Metallica fans again

91. SMASHING PUMPKINS - "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"
and the never ending alternative coffee house crying continues to persist like a mosquito that you just can't find quick enough to swat. PLEASE STOP calling this tripe 'hard rock' already. read the title, that says it all.

of course there are others in this list that are silly but I'm tired of commenting.
