METALLICA's ULRICH Says He Is Up For Playing With Reunited DEEP PURPLE - Jan. 5, 2009
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has offered his services to members of the DEEP PURPLE Mk III lineup should they decide to go ahead with a proposed reunion tour.

In separate interviews for February edition of Classic Rock magazine (issue No.128), David Coverdale (vocals), Glenn Hughes (bass, vocals) and Jon Lord (keyboards) have all intimated they would be up for playing together again, and all parties have recently been in contact with Ritchie Blackmore (guitar).

In fact, the only block to the band reforming could be Ian Paice, who, as a member of the current PURPLE, would probably find it difficult and uncomfortable to get involved.

Enter Lars Ulrich, a hardcore PURPLE fan who was fortunate enough to see PURPLE Mk III at the band's first show, at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen in 1973.

"I know there's talk about the fact that if they got Coverdale, Hughes, Lord and Blackmore together, they would have four members who aren't in the current DEEP PURPLE — then they just need a drummer. I'll volunteer myself for that," Lars laughed. "If they need a drummer, David Coverdale has my number."

The February edition of Classic Rock goes on sale on Wednesday, January 7.

For more information, visit the Classic Rock web site.

Fan-filmed video footage of Lars Ulrich performing the DEEP PURPLE classic "Smoke on the Water" with Ian Gillan during the PURPLE frontman's solo gig on September 11, 2006 at Slim's in San Francisco can be viewed below.

That could be more than amazing for Lars, because of dAVID AND gLENN have always played with very good drummers like Paicy, and he is far better than Lars, if Lars takes the chance, he would have to practice a lot, `cause on this kind of super project he wouldn`t be with his brothers Metallica that can stand him playing weak and bad... anyway, this could be nothing but awesome for Metallica.

Lord Coverdale uniting with Lord Lord, Blackmore etc. I've just discovered the Mach III material in the last 5 years, the Burn album is fantastic, but the drumming in particular is stellar, Lars couldn't come close to reproducing a song like "you fool no one" or even Burn, the drumming is so good & technically difficult. Unless Lars dumbs up his playing for Metallica? Lord Coverdale is getting his Lions Mane perfectly quaffed for this gig. His hair is Farrah-esc. Will Blackmore put the Robin Hood tights in the closet & pull the Strat out of the closet. His faire lady will surely be sad....I've always scoffed at Lord Coverdale til I heard the Burn album, almost Chris Cornell like on "Sail Away". Less 80's metal-ish, false Bobby Plant like. More himself.

The real DP would be great to reunite, but he & Gillan hate each other, don't they? Musically I think this one might be more entertaining now, even though Gillan is far superior than Lord Coverdale, at this point, Gillans lost a few steps. At least better than the current DP out on the road, but yes, unite the whole thing, sounds like its just RB & Ian that have the issues. This will be dubbed "Stormbringer".

...why, if after all this time, and swearing off Deep Purple for good, would Blackmore come back for a Mark III reunion? Just baffling! I mean, the obvious choice would be the Mark II reunion with Paice, Glover, Blackmore, Lord, and Gillian, but it would even be alot more interesting than a Mark III reunion, if not as good as the Mark II reunion, to get a Mark I reunion in the works...now that would really freak people out. I doubt this will happen. Most reunions are motivated by money and this would not be a money tour. Only real music-heads would know or even care about this material. To most people Deep Purple is only 'Smoke On The Water,' 'Highway Star,' and 'My Woman From Tokyo.' If this isn't THOSE guys doing THOSE songs, the casual observers don't give a shit.

Also, Paice is happy in the current line-up where they're all just a bunch of old geezers who get along making records and playing music. This would drive a wedge there. And Lord is on good terms with the current line-up guys - doing this after deciding he's too old to carry on with them would be a slap in the face.

Plus, why would Lord and Paice want to put themselves through working with a prick like Blackmore again? The guy is a royal asshole who stabbed them in the back by leaving abruptly in 1993.

Furthermore, I don't think they have any great love for Coverdale who - while he still has the voice - has a reputation as a true prick to deal with.

And I'm sure nobody trusts Hughes to be fully over his demons.

I'd say Lord and Paice are happy going into the twilight years with guys they get along with making music and having fun - who needs the drama at this age, and for no real big paycheck? Cov has Whitesnake up and running again and Blackmore is happy playing Renaissance Fair music with his old lady.

I think these guys saying they'd like to do it is like someone saying they'd like to go sky-diving. Theoretically it sounds amusing, but they're probably not making any phone calls to make it happen.

very good points, and reunions are most definitely about getting together for $$ and some fame, & this would lack that as opposed to a Mach II reunion, but...Lord isn't in the current DP & Paice would remain in that DP. Lord has mentioned he regrets "retiiring". Coverdale & especially Hughes, this is as close to a big thing as any for them. I agree, only music head would be into this, but enough Blackmore fans to fill a theater I'd say. Hughes is playing clubs I'm sure....so Hughes & Coverdale probably would endure Blackmore. Blackmore would be the only person wavering, but if he wanted to play electric again, he might do this. He hates Gillian so that's most likely out. Lord Lord would just be pleased to take the stage again, then they'd need a drummer...I usually scoff at bands that have new members, watered down, keep the name(GnR now), but that Mach III was suprising good & creative, not just playing basic blues or "classic" rock, they got funky. Musically, I'd be into this, & I always thought Coverdale was a cheesy 2nd rate Plant wanna-be. But great on the Burn album.

I would want to see it, don't get me wrong. Just don't think it's very likely. In fact, I'd rather see this than seeing Blackmore with Gillan at this point as Gillan really can't deliver anymore. It's still fun to see the current Purple live, but it's like Muhammed Ali fighting today - not even close to what he was in 1972, or even 1988.

I think if Lord really regretted retiring, his old pals would have him back. I think he's content to just drop by as a guest here and there.

As a theater tour this would be fun. And it would be cool - though I wouldn't count on hearing too much of that 'funky' stuff. Blackmore has said the reason he left after Stormbringer was he did not like the element of funk Hughes and Coverdale were bringing in (which culminated in the very funky 'Come taste The Band' album).

They'll play everything off Burn, maybe the title cut from Stormbringer and Soldier, and Smoke on the Water. That would be my guess. Hopefully no Glenn Hughes wailing 'Georgia on my Mind'.

The drummer will probably be Bobby Rondinelli. Blackmore likes to bring his Rainbow peeps back to Purple and Cozy Powell is dead.

I'd be glad to see Blackmore with Electric again, and as a fan, this might supply more punch, though commercially it wouldn't fly as well. I like the element of funk, though it completely changed Deep Purple. Probably should have called it another name. Hughes was great back then, wonder if he can hit those high notes anymore....what is Lord's relationship with Blackmore?(or what was it?)....energywise I think this would be stronger than Mach II reunion. This is the only format I 've liked Coverdale....I'm sure this is alot of nothing, maybe Hughes trying one last time to get it together.

Again, I wouldn't hold my breath. While I'm sure this is what Hughes says a Rosary for every night, since his career is basically all about reminding people he was once in Deep Purple, the other guys have things they'd rather be doing for either art or commerce.

If this materialized at all, it would probably be one show - hopefully filmed for a DVD. But Blackmore is doing what he wants to do. While I personally think it's awful, it seems top make him happy. And that's something for a guy who never seems to be happy.

Whitesnake is still a pretty big act outside the US, and Cov doesn't have to share the mic on stage. I think it's rather telling that he rarely if ever does any Deep Purple material with Whitesnake (last time I saw them they opened with Burn which was a shock - I'd never heard him do ANY of that stuff live).

Paice has a gig (though I think he recently jammed with a Mark III era cover band, which is interesting).

Lord is out of the game. I don't think we'll see him do any more big live tours.

to say the least---but mostly just the idea of getting Ritchie rocking again is awesome (though I do like the 1st Blackmore's Night album).

I have much respect for the Coverdale/Hughes lineup (Burn is a true classic), but I agree with many posters, in terms of appeal and draw among a broad audience, most of the ticket-buying classic rock fans today only know the Gillan/Glover era hits. Sadly, many probably don't even associate Coverdale with Purple, only knowing him from the remade "Here I Go Again" of Whitesnake's late 80's glory days, and would assume he's just a "name" stand-in for Gillan on a nostalgia tour.

And at random . . .

1. Agree with the slam refutation of an above poster . . . for the record, Gillan surely can't scream and wail like he did on Made In Japan anymore, but I have seen Purple on several recent tours and he still sounds great.

2. Ritchie did the Purple reunion thing in the 80's---to me the most compelling thing for him in a return to rocking would be with Dio, reviving early Rainbow. (Though did we ever think we'd get a new Dio-Sabbath album? I don't want to get greedy!)

3. For people who call Coverdale a Plant wannabe . . . did you ever hear his early work with Purple? Or his post Purple solo/early Whitesnake albums? They are different vocalists for sure, and I don't know enough about comparative songwriting skills, but I will get crazy enough to say Zeppelin would have been every bit as good vocally if Coverdale had been the voice. Coverdale was pretty much unknown before he joined Purple in '73, but he's only a few years younger than Plant---it could have happened. Flame if you must, just my opinion.

my comments about recognition of the Coverdale/Hughes lineup is definitely a bit USA biased. While I think it is still valid, Europe, Japan, etc. probably knows the Coverdale/Hughes Purple lineup better and thus potential shows may draw more there. Maybe?

Also---in anticipation of riducule . . . my comparison of Coverdale & Plant is reflective of the vocalists they were in the 70's . . . both are only a shadow of what they were then today.

This thing could happen. John Lord and Coverdale have worked together many times since MK IV's demise. Lord talked in Keyboarding magazine a few years ago about hoping to work with Ritchie again...

Thwy could call it 'Stormbringer'.

btw Gillans greatness is not because of his falsetto, that is ridiculous. He has been called the greatest rock n roll singer by many of his peers. In my 25 years of concert going I have seen very few vocalists that could sing like Gillan. Yeah im biased Deep Purple is my favorite band of all time and Gillan my favorite singer, but I saw him in Anaheim on the Gillans Inn tour and he was as good as the times I saw him on the Perfect Strangers tours, the only difference is he can't do Child in Time every night anymore.

Most singers could not do Child in Time one time.

In regards to Gillan still bringing it, if you go to the shows now & enjoy it, great, but you have to give him concessions in order to truly appreciate him. He doesn't bring it like he did. The people that says he does say "he still brings it, but just can't go high, scream or falsetto'...well that was his calling card, its a bunch of "buts". So you're getting Gillan at half speed. Same with Plant with Zep now, I personally don't think he can touch most of the zep material now & you have cut him 1,000 breaks in order to say "that rocked"....And Coverdale IS a Plant wanna-be. yes, i've heard & know his stuff in DP & he was great in DP. He was himself, he sang with more class, balls. Sail Away is awesome, with Hughes, they sounded great. But he did become a Plant Clone in WhiteSnake, so those people saying that aren't wrong. Hes' more into his Golden Mane then his singing. as a matter of fact, when DP took him on, they were worried he was overweight, pimply faced & unprofessional. Maybe those criticism stung enough that he went in the total other direction. Less substance, more flash.

Why reform an inferior version of Deep Purple? Mk3 did two studio albums. One good(Burn) the other not that great (Stormbringer). Neither one could match Mk2's stuff. Having said that, the first concert i ever saw was this line-up in 1974 on the Stormbringer tour. Even though this version of DP couldn't write great songs compared to the previous band, they were great live even though Coverdale couldn't do the Gillen material justice. By the way. Electric light Orchestra and Elf (Dio's first band) opened the show.

All your opions.. Wouldn't call it an inferior version.. For those who are die-hard mkII and blackmore fans.. you've had your reunion, not once, but twice.. And blackmore can't stand gillan, doesn't think gillan can sing anymore either. In my opinon mk3 wrote the greatest songs, soldier of fortune, gypsy, burn and so on. I thought they were more diverse.. I don't see why everybody keep on talking about mk-2.. You have the current deep purple with gillan.. Go see that, if you still think Ian has a good voice. I think we all should be happy if this happened; it'd be like two deep purple out there playing mk2 and mk3 songs!!

Woudn't you like blackmore to re-enter the rock scene?? Not that I think he will, but he recently said (in an interview) that the next album he'd do, might be more of a rock album. Coverdale is great, hughes better than ever (in my opinion) .. So, this should be interesting...

I gotta agree with LepSnake mostly because the MK II version isn't going to happen due to hatred, so why not this, which I was surprised(I just discovered Mach III a few years ago) was very solid & diverse. I do think Mach II is the definitive Purple, the classic lineup that if they were to be put in the R&R HOF, that would get them there, that lineup. But, musically, this would be fun & would get Blackmore out of tights & ripping on a Strat again. I had dismissed Mach III for years cuz I thought Coverdale was a clown & figured the albums would be more like early whitesnake, watered down white man's blues, but it has lots of different elements & great song writing...and Lars couldn't touch "you fool no one" on drums....I do feel Mach III shouldn't have used the DP name though, Mach II had really a huge mark on rock, lots of rock hits, great albums & the name should have stayed there, it was a total different band, members & style on Burn.

Glad that you’ve realized that 100-million albums selling david isn’t a clown :P. And those early wsnake-albums were a hugh hit everywhere (almost) but USA.
MkIII btw had great albums as well, imo. Compare “who do we think..” to “burn” for an example.. Many critics even say that burn was the greatest purple album, even better than machine head.. Many wouldn’t agree.. but see strombringers.. (the documentary).
Regarding the deep purple name; MkI was, at least initially, big in the US, with evans/simper/blackmore/lord/paice. Mk II was a hugh hit all over, with gillan/glover/blackmore/lord/paice. Mk III were a hugh hit as well, with coverdale/hughes/blackmore/lord/paice.. See, where I’m getting at?? Blackmore/lord/paice formed a unique trio that was very recognizable, and that is why they still called it purple, says coverdale. David and glenn just put their songwriting/vocals/glenn bass guitar on the albums with the famous trio.

I think your take of Mach I & Mach III is over stated a bit. Other than Hush, Mach I didn't really take off. Maybe big for that moment in '68. After 40 years, no one other than huge DP fans know who the lineup is. Mach III, while musically brilliant, was originally big only because the name DP. They were given the headliner spot at CalJam, but "legend" has it many were disappointed when they found out it wasn't really the DP they knew. No doubt that lineup delivered musically, but after Burn, those albums are little known, again, only by huge music fans. The average rock fan thinks & knows DP as Mach II lineup, Gillan's voice being recognized as much as Lord & Blackmore....I'm not dissing the Mach III lineup, but let's call it what it is. I'd be excited for a reunion of Mach III, but I don't think it will garnish much attention beyond the huge fans.....Mach III albums are great. The last one with Bolin should never be called DP though. I do agree, Burn IMO may be their best album, with MachineHead....personally, David with his 100mil albums sold is a goof by the time he was selling those albums, that 1987 album he is purely a Plant wanna-be, hoping to ride the hairmetal wave....which he succeeded at. he had so much more substance with DP. Musically. he grew leaps & bounds folically, he was a Breck girl, His hair was perfect. Glorious mane.

Yes many people know DP as Mk-II, the Mk-II that played 1969-1973.. But you say that a mk-II reunion might be more popular.. We already have one purple.. Mk-II reunion won’t happen , it has already happened two times.. I think a Mk-III would be more popular.. Why? Mk-III were very popular but never played in Japan, a country were purple still is extremely popular! Perhaps the only country.. Mk-III hasn’t played together since 1975.. And due to the names they’ve made after mk-III.. Glenn hughes (black Sabbath, phenomena, solo), Coverdale (whitesnake, coverdale/page) and so on. And the fact that two original dp musicians could be involved (only one today)!
Not all of coverdales albums were sold in 1987/1988 you know. In fact, he’s sold more than purple has after 1976, even though being inactive for several years. And as for the plant-wanna-be.. yes it’s been documented and discussed many times.. He made a name in Europe+Japan for his blues rock, kept on selling as much albums during the 1987-1990period in Europe+Japan, and was a great success in America!
So, although his music has been diverse, he has always been very successful, and keeps on selling more albums than the current purple could dream about.. Best album of the year! Yes, I’m a hugh Coverdale fan, but statistics and facts tells the story.. I just find it rather interesting that many reunions are dreams for many people.. But they so seldom happen, so we should appreciate it.. What do some people do when it happens? Talk about other unlikely reunions, instead of being grateful!

that's where you have me wrong, I'd love the Mach III reunion, musically I think they'd bring more to the table then a Mach II reunion, as you said, that's happened 2 times, & also, it won't happen, so I'd celebrate this. And it was(if it happens) totally out of the blue...I do think the measure of success for bands is America, maybe England, but you have to make it in america.
Quiet Riot with Randy Rhodes was huge in Japan, it got them no where...but regardless, I'd welcome Mach III reunion.

Lord Lord Speaks! I'm sure it is hot air. Hughes making a few calls & Blackmore laughing in his ear, in old English...btw, does anyone speak the Kings English better than Lord Coverdale, I'll give him that, he sparkles in interview.

I have now added my Lord, Lord Lord's site, JonLord.org to my favorites, which I'm sure you already have, to get up to the minute Mach II, III, IV...and I info. He looks stately. Why hasn't he been Knighted? Does he still F the keyboard like he did in the 70's.
