HEAVEN AND HELL: New Album Tentatively Due In March/April - Jan. 5, 2009
According to legendary heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi, the upcoming album from HEAVEN AND HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Iommi, Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — is tentatively scheduled for release in March/April via Rhino. The group's first LP since SABBATH's "Dehumanizer" (1992) is being recorded at Rockfield studios in Wales, U.K. (where "Dehumanizer" was also tracked). "It's all going very well, I'm pleased to say," Iommi said in a January 5, 2009 online posting.

Ronnie James Dio, who co-wrote the self-produced album with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler during sessions in Los Angeles and England, told Revolver magazine that the CD "sounds great. It's a real cross-section of everything we've done, from 'Heaven and Hell' through 'Mob Rules' and 'Dehumanizer'. I think there's a lot of 'Dehumanizer' in it, but a lot of other things, too, a real good blend of what this band has represented."

HEAVEN AND HELL has scheduled the following European tour dates:

May 30 - Moscow, RUS @ B1 Maximum
May 31 - Moscow, RUS @ B1 Maximum
Jun. 02 - Helsinki, FIN @ Icehall
June 3-6 - Sölvesborg, SWE - Sweden Rock
Jun. 04 - Oslo, NOR @ Spektrum
Jun. 08 - Gießen, GER @ Hessenhallen
Jun. 09 - Berlin, GER @ Zitadelle
Jun. 10 - Bamberg, GER @ Jako-Arena
Jun. 13 - Burgum, NETH - Waldrock
Jun. 14 - Karlsruhe, GER @ Europahalle
Jun. 16 - Bonn, GER @ Museumsmeile
Jun. 17 - Zürich, SWI @ Volkshaus
Jun. 19-21 - Clisson, FRA - Hellfest

More shows will be announced soon.

More than two years ago, Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice reunited to record a trio of new songs for Rhino's "Black Sabbath: The Dio Years" before launching a highly anticipated and greatly acclaimed world tour under their new moniker HEAVEN AND HELL. Revitalized by the reunion, the lineup is back in the studio now recording the first-ever full-length studio album from HEAVEN AND HELL. To whet the fans' appetites for the new album, HEAVEN AND HELL returned to the road this past summer for a short stint on the Metal Masters Tour, a month-long North American trek with JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD, and TESTAMENT.

Regarding the band's decision to continue to operate as HEAVEN AND HELL rather than BLACK SABBATH, Iommi told Billboard.com earlier this year, "It really is BLACK SABBATH, whatever we do. We just choose to go out as HEAVEN AND HELL so everyone knows what they're getting [and] so people won't expect to hear 'Iron Man' and all those songs. We've done them for so many years, it's nice to do just all the stuff with did with Ronnie again."

I don't think I've ever looked forward to a new release,as much as I'm looking forward to this one. Hopefully, the songs and the production will be as good as the 3 new songs from The DIO Years. Metalheads rejoice!!!

Really looking forward to this!!
But please dont do the front cover the same way as "the Dio years" and Rules of Hell". And as Black Ice (AC/DC).
Cool set-up, but somehow seemed so.....I dont know....like somebody did it with a home computer if you know what I mean.

And by the way.
I come here daily to read news, and if its great news, I´ll sometimes comment if I have the time because I´m quite busy.
I would never ever waste my time to comment on something that did not interest me.
My point is: that fugnazi guy must have a lot of time to do.....nothing.
Do something positive with that extra time instead, help old ladies across the road or whatever.....just a friendly advise.

I spent a long time listening to the Ozzy version of Black Sabbath, to the point that I got sick of Iron Man and War Pigs. I never heard any of the Dio stuff but after seeing them play live, I would definitely go and buy a new album from them.

They might as well do new music with Ronnie, since they will never be able to get it done with Ozzy/Sharon.

OK, I don't like Fugazi and I really don't like Rush. That being said the new Heaven and Hell album will be the best music in 2009. The new HnH will likely be the best album of the last decade. The legends in that band are that damn good.

If you look at history, Sabbath have always produced the best albums of the years that their albums have been released. That statement includes the Tony Martin era. That statement includes the awesome Seventh Star album with the Voice of Rock.

I would be interested in hearing from somebody offer a rebuttal, I will be respectful in my subsequent comments.

Saw Dio on both the Heaven and Hell and Metal Masters tours . . . really a miracle his performance and how good he still sounds at his age. The guy's first single he released with his high school band or whatever was in 1958! 1958!!! That really boggles the mind. Sure he doesn't go for as many of the truly soaring highs he did back in the "Rainbow: On Stage" days or on his early Sabbath and solo stuff, but like a great, aging power pitcher in baseball, he has evolved, worked in some finesse, but can still dial it up when he needs to.

While I do like the album a lot, I never loved Iommi's guitar tone on Dehumanizer . . . which seems to have carried forward to the new tracks on the Dio Years CD. Hard to put my finger on what it is exactly. The sound/tone of his solos on Heaven & Hell is, I think, his best, though the overall sound of that album is more subdued than others. While I like the sound of his solos best on H&Hl, the in-your-face, raw, almost live sound of Mob Rules I like the best if I had to choose. Anyone else know what I mean . . . that can maybe explain it better??? That's the only thing that makes me the least bit wary of comments that the new album is very reminiscent of Dehumanizer. Nevertheless I am stoked and have high hopes for the new album. Can't wait!

...I agree - the Iommi sound on Mob Rules is my favourite - I'd go as far as to say it's my all-time favourite album (Dio's finest performance of effortless majesty on there too, for my money).

The Dehumaniser sound was a little too muddy for me and the drums a bit plodding, something a bit flat in the production - yet still a fine album.

PS They should use Geoff Nicholls, his (subtle) keys always give a valuable added dimension.

COMMENT | Anyone know what the setup and effects wee on H&H?

I totally agree about the guitar tone.

I did check some effects diagrams and the amp, preamp, cabinet setup on guitargeeks.com, but I don't really have the technical background to get it.

Could anyone tell me how I might closely approximate the H&H or Mob Rules sound with a single amp and a few effects... like what type of head/cabinet combination might do it (I know the Iommi Signature series, the cheap one from Epiphone is on the lame side, except for the pickup).

Thanx

Anytime Fugazi can put together a Legacy of 3, count'em, 3 Legendary bands that have been around 20+ years each with millions of fans I'll put some stock in you words. But Fugazi was popular for like, what, 2-3 years tops in the early 90's right. Get a life man, this album will actually kill any members of Fugazi that are still alive!!!

Well, many old school rock enthusiasts (age 60+) I know claim that Dio "lies" about his real birth year being "just" the generally or at least widely accepted 1942, it's claimed that his real birth year is 1938...

What we have in the table NOW - regardless of his high age (the highest in the heavy rock & metal world) - are:

1. New, upcoming (and maybe the final) Black Sabbath album with Dio and Appice

2. New upcoming world tour as Heaven And Hell for the entire 2009

3. Magica II and III and maybe the final Dio tour + Magica live DVD

Dio is now 66-70, with a rock 'n' roll career of 50 years under his belt...we are already so very blessed and lucky to have him still around going strong, loud and proud both in the studio and on stages worldwide...unlike many younger legends who should have already retired...

Dio has promised to finish his career with a credible voice and performance ability, the kind of ability he himself deems credible to himself. He also has spoken of reaffirming the legacy of Black Sabbath on his part and finishing the Magica trilogy as promised years ago. These promises mean that Dio will be around for another 3-4 years at least.

I had the fantastic opportunity to experience Heaven And Hell live on two consecutive nights back in 2007. First at the S:O:A Festival and then in Hellsinki icehall. Dio's performance was supreme on the first night BUT IT WAS EVEN MORE SUPERIOR on the second night!!! I can't believe a man of his age and career can still roar and soar like that! And there was absolutely no FUCKEN WEAKNESS in his voice! Of course it's darker and rougher than in the 80's AND IT SHOULD BE. I like his voice more for what it's now than what it's on the 80's recordings.

Dio is the angry lion of heavy rock!!!
