JON LORD Shatters LARS ULRICH's DEEP PURPLE Dream - Jan. 6, 2009
Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord has commented on rumors of a possible reunion of the DEEP PURPLE Mk III lineup featuring a special guest appearance by METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich.

In separate interviews for February edition of Classic Rock magazine (issue No.128), David Coverdale (vocals), Glenn Hughes (bass, vocals) and Jon Lord have all indicated that they would be up for playing together again, and all parties have recently been in contact with Ritchie Blackmore (guitar).

Seeing as the only block to the band reforming could be Ian Paice — who, as a member of the current PURPLE, would probably find it difficult and uncomfortable to get involved — it has been suggested that Lars Ulrich could step in on a temporary basis and handle the drum duties on a proposed reunion tour.

"I know there's talk about the fact that if they got Coverdale, Hughes, Lord and Blackmore together, they would have four members who aren't in the current DEEP PURPLE — then they just need a drummer. I'll volunteer myself for that," Lars — a hardcore PURPLE fan who was fortunate enough to see PURPLE Mk III at the band's first show, at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen in 1973 — told Classic Rock. "If they need a drummer, David Coverdale has my number."

Writing on his official web site, JonLord.org, Jon Lord commented on the Classic Rock report by saying, "It all seems like a lot of hot air and wild speculation to me.

"I like Lars and what he has achieved with METALLICA. He's obviously always been very complimentary in his comments about DEEP PURPLE, and I love the story of his famous nine-years-old 'baptism of fire' at our '73 concert in The KB Halle in Copenhagen, but if I was asked to be involved in a 'Mark III' reunion — (which, by the way, I haven't. All I ever said was that the idea had a few good points and a few not-so-good points.) — and I indeed considered that offer, I would not be able to even imagine it without the presence of Ian Paice.

"By the way — I have NOT retired!"

Fan-filmed video footage of Lars Ulrich performing the DEEP PURPLE classic "Smoke on the Water" with Ian Gillan during the PURPLE frontman's solo gig on September 11, 2006 at Slim's in San Francisco can be viewed below.

It would be a sacrielege for someone of Lars limited talents to even be on stage with people as talented as Blackmore, Lord and Coverdale. I never did dig Glen that much as a bassplayer. That being said Death Magnetic is the Best drumming Lars has done since Justice.

I kinda thought that the whole 2 Deep Purples at once thing, was a bit suspect from the beginning. Still, it would be great to see Ritchie w/ the band, one more time.

So Jon WOULD consider it if Paice wa involved
Sorry Lars, but i'd have thought that Chad Smith would have been further up the pecking order than you.....by talent alone.

Lars volunteering himself for Deep Purple is as stupid an idea as Dave Grohl nominating himself as drummer for Led Zeppelin.

Lars couldnt hold a candle to Ian Paice and the thought of him 'replacing' Paice on a reunion tour makes my stomach churn

I can see exactly what Jon Lord is saying about Ian Paice, but if Paice is unwilling to break with the current Deep Purple, then I could see Lars coming in.
Still, Ritchie Blackmore coming in...there's one part of me that says Ritchie would like to do it, and another part of me that says he won't do it, due to a new wife and a mother-in-law.

I would much rather see Ritchie Blackmore in a reunited/revitalized Rainbow, than joining the Deep Purple Mk III line up. Any song on Rainbow's Rising LP is superior to DP's Burn LP, and I really like the Burn LP.

The headline for this article is absolutely hilarious.

RIP Lars' Dream :'(

Mine name is Steve and I'd also like to volunteer for the spot. Does just saying I want to do it count for anything? Lars seems to think so.

Lars is not the right guy to replace Ian Paice. Any more than Ian Paice would be right sitting in with Metallica.

I'm a drummer and I prefer Ian, but Lars is a lot better than some people give him credit for.

First of all, Blackmore's first reaction would have been Who is Lars Ulrich??? Second, they would have to get blackmore to do this reunion, he has been very resistant in the past 10 years to do anything other than blackmores night. People are begging for a dio/blackmore reunion but that is not happening... The latter Rainbow reunion is not hahppenig either... Ian Paice would have to do it, and I think he will, push comes to shove, because this thing if it happens will be huge!!!

That'll NEVER happen. First Dio Hates Ritchie, and the feeling is mutual. He also doesn't always see eye to eye with Bob Daisley either. Also Cozy Powell is DEAD. Dead as a Porsche hitting a telephone pole at 150KPH can make you. And sad to say it, but practically NO ONE cares about the other lineups. Whoe would go to see a Rainbow Reunion with Bobby Rondinelli and Graham Bonnet? People want the Rising/Long Live Rock and Roll line-ups and that's it. Joe Lynn Turner can go fuck off, but I would go to see a MkIII reunion. Sail Away, You Fool No One, StormBringer and Burn live wwould rule, and Coverdale & Hughes still sound stellar.

I'm not 100% sure that the two hate each other. From what I've heard, Ritchie had nice things to say about Dio both in print and not in print, unless someone could tell me different.
As for Dio, I remember reading in an interview that he wasn't going to say anything negative about Ritchie. Of course, that interview I think took place sometime ago, and things can change.
