OPETH Mainman Comments On Swedish GRAMMIS Loss - Jan. 8, 2009
IN FLAMES was honored with the "Best Hard Rock" award at the Swedish "Grammis" gala, which was last night (Wednesday, January 7) at Hovet in Stockholm. The band also performed the song "Alias" during the ceremony, which was broadcast live on Swedish national channel TV4.

The artists were nominated for their most recent releases, all of which came out during 2008.

The nominees in the "Best Hard Rock" category were as follows:

* IN FLAMES - "A Sense Of Purpose"
* MESHUGGAH - "obZen"
* MILLENCOLIN - "Machine 15"
* OPETH – "Watershed"
* SABATON - "The Art Of War"

Commented OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt:

"OPETH = losers!

"Haha, no I'm not that bitter!

"We didn't win the Grammy award this year either and I admit I got a little disappointed although it doesn't really mean anything. Since I'm there at the show I wanna fucking win! But IN FLAMES got it. They're mates of ours so I'm happy for them.

"I wanna thank all of you who voted for us. Cheers people!

"The show was boring as usual, all the same people, same winners, same 'surprise' band constellations. Some artists there really have high thoughts of themselves. It's quite embarrassing to see how stuck up some of them are. I mean they don't even have a international career most of them and still they act they're the fucking 'deal.'

"I got completely obliterated on wine and champagne...and beer. My wife too, she got all fucked up. But we had a pretty good time during dinner, chatting and drinking away. The after-party was at a classic place called Berns and it was packed. We didn't stay for long though.

"OK, just letting you know we fucking LOST!"

Video footage of IN FLAMES' acceptance speech (including a glimpse of Mikael Åkerfeldt) can be viewed below.

....until someone breaks the mold, who cares if you "win or lose."

Mikael's comments, however, are funny as shit!

"what fucking metalhead would watch this?"

Perhaps the regular svensson-dudes, that go to work with their uniforms and lunch boxes, behave like they're supposed to in order to "fit in", then throw on some old Slayer-shirts and some leather on a friday night and hang around the town's only metal bar around and flirt with the same people over and over again? Be it Stockholm or Luleå, it's usually the same everywhere when it comes to "easy-listeners".

Opeth is the greatest- keep it up. There are no losers in great music my friend. I have gigs and gigs of tons of music and artists and all I have been listening to all week is Watershed, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, and Damnation on shuffle... attended two Opeth concerts here in the states and look to see you guys again. Not that you would actually read this...too busy writing music I bet!

Without being able to comment much on the current nominated material, Mikael should know that awards like these are highly political, so basically it was someone else's turn to win this year. Besides, when you make the same album again and again and again, it can't always win even though it has different wrapping. What Opeth is doing is not groundbreaking by any means. It doesn't mean it's not good... it's just not that unique. Not anymore. It was, at one point...

i gotta say, perhaps the two best metal records I bought in 08 were Watershed and Sense of Purpose. These bands are great. And I'm glad Michael is taking it well, at least it's a legitimate band that won and not some Swedish Nickelback knock-off.

also... you will never see bands like this at the US Grammys. If you ever see Metal bands at our grammys, it will be the same old ones - Metallica, Slayer, Slipknot, Disturbed... Jethro Tull... our grammys are afraid to enter the true realm of metal, they only stick with what is comfortable, even if everyone in the metal community KNOWS that those are not the best choices.

Mikael has to learn how to write decent songs that don't suck before he can hope to win an award so prestigious.

@overkill: Most of the bands you mentioned were nominated but never made it to the final round. They're basically not popular enough.

And, of course In Flames won. It's a popularity contest where the general public is allowed to vote and hence the most popular band with the biggest audience win. In Flames has a huge following in Sweden so one shouldn't be surprised.

metal doesn't need awards/award shows. those things are for mainstream acts to have their ego's stroked and have E! channel in their face asking them what they wear. i really wish award shows would drop metal. not sure how it is in other countries, but i don't think the grammy's televise metal. the funny thing is it s amajor genre, but whatever. and whoever said its the same bands year after year is right. who in their right mind would give best metal performance to st anger? c'mon. fuck award shows
