Jailed LIZZY BORDEN Guitarist Claims Veganism Not Recognized By Facility As 'Valid And Sincere'

Current LIZZY BORDEN guitarist Ira Black, who has previously played with METAL CHURCH, VICIOUS RUMORS and HEATHEN, has gone on a hunger strike at the Los Angeles County Jail because he claims that veganism is not being recognized by the facility as "valid and sincere." Ira was taken into custody the morning of January 3, 2009 on a misdemeanor charge (he apparently had a warrant out for his arrest for an unpaid fine) and is being held on $65,000 bail. Black's fiancée says that the guitarist "has been in the system for over a week now and has had to survive on a miniscule diet. Ira has been a vegan for 15 years and it seems none of the local correctional facilities will accommodate any inmate with a vegetarian or vegan diet. They will give inmates with medical problems or religious beliefs a different meal, but there is no concern for the vegetarians/vegans. "He feels very strongly about this and has gone on a 'hunger strike' until his release later this month to show how serious this should be taken. The situation has been escalating hour by hour. He is now being mistreated by the guards and was forced to take off a sign he was wearing that said 'hunger strike.' He is also being coerced by deputies to 'just go with the system' and eat the food that is provided. He is being threatened and is worried he will be punished in unknown ways just for requesting a meal of vegetables and/or fruit. " Ira spoke to a chaplain at the jail, and they both feel like this is an issue which needs to be made public and dealt with. Ira stated: 'If I can just get the word out so that people will start calling the jail, there can be some changes made. I want people to know how legitimate and sincere veganism and vegetarianism is and this is a serious human-rights issue, I'm not just trying to manipulate the system.' " Ira has also contacted other musicians, local media and PETA regarding this issue." It's rare for people to actually put into practice what they actually believe. Good for Ira Black. Unlike the other poster or poser here who can't think for himself and believes the police and the American justice system is free from corruption and has the best interest of the citizens at heart.
Going to jail on a misdemeanor charge? Looks like the US has something in common with countries like Saudi Arabia or Iran. So much for your freedom loving country. Its a lie.

Doing time in jail has nothing to do with following a specific diet. If he is a vegan, he should be allowed to follow that diet. The system is also inconsistent, because they make exceptions for religious reasons... Meaning they have vegan/vegetarian/kosher meals. Why not just give him a damn piece of fruit?

Her name is Sundae---odd way to write the article.
Ira is a good guy. Not sure what M is 50,000 and another at 15,000. The sentence is 32 days according to court site, but that's always inflated.
And whats wrong requesting fruits and veggies? That should be an easy request. And just because he is in jail doesn't mean he's guilty. he's being held until there is a hearing.
But that confuses the issue of the 32 days...

I like how people believe that all standards should be altered so that they're comfortable and happy, even when in jail. So you don't get to choose your own menu? I think that's just the nature of jail, that it really sucks. If that's the worst thing that happens then count your blessings.
As for being locked up for an unpaid fine... that does seem a little weird. Must be one hell of a fine.

Well... I, myself, as a California taxpayer, have to say; I'm glad for the hunger strike. That's less that I have to pay. In fact, in the course of his incarceration, however trivial the charge may seem, he also needs to remember that he is being punished. As an addendum to his punishment, I do not feel that it is cruel or unusual for him to have to eat non-vegan food. As long as the food is nutritious enough for sustenance, I couldn't really care less about the food that is given to inmates. If I were to find myself incarcerated, I would have to face facts as well. The next thing you know, they'll give him vegan food, and then he's going to whine and cry about the fact that it doesn't taste good. Good for him. Middle fingers up to that guy.

Seriously, he can just get the meal they serve him, trade the piece of meat for another inmate's fruits and vegetables, and double up...

VIP's advice to protesters and activists: STAY OUT OF JAIL. Although there is some movement to accommodate vegans, most state and local facilities are not going to offer vegans a wholesome meal. Federal prisons obviously offer diverse vegan options.
As for the posters saying that Vegan is not metal, I disagree... The fact he talked (cried) to the prison chaplain about his prison food is not metal.

He was picked up on January 3 by the RAIL UNIT PATROL, held and released on January 5 at 6:52PM. Arrested at Superior Court on January 6 at 912am and sentenced to LA Men's Central Jail at 1119 AM January 6. Scheduled for release on January 17.
Ira Black was tried and found guilty for resisting arrest back in 2005 in Van Nuys. He had THREE years to clear this shit up. I have no sympathy.

I like the states, I really do, but it is so easy to go to jail. Sadly many of the posters here actually justify the system with statements "you should have paid the fine", for misdemeanors you should get a letter in the mailbox stating your fine is doubled and so forth, your car is impounded, not go to jail.

The dude is in jail for 32 days because he had a warrant out for a fine. In most states if you don't pay the fine even if its small then they put out a warrant for your arrest. That means if you get stopped you are going to jail no matter what. He is serving 32 days because that is the amount of jail time needed to pay off his fine since it appears he does not have the money to do so. That is why he is in jail for a misdemeanor. His own stupid fault to be fined in the first place, second to not pay it and get a warrant out on him, and third to still not pay it and get caught. I feel no pity for him.

1) Why does every single vegan I know look totally and completely unhealthy?
2) Why can't any vegan I know, name 3 people over the age of 80 who are vegans? I can name dozens of people I know over the age of 80, but not one of them is a vegan. If veganism was so healthy, why aren't there 100 year old vegans running around?

Also to add that there is a good chance he won't be returning to the band after doing a months "hardtime". It appears that some eles will be taking his position as lead guitarist in the near future.

First of all I would like to add that this act is completely wrong,and I'm not sure if other charges were included for that amount of bail but if the man wants his fruits and veggies then let him be.To that comment about Veganism is not Metal (won't mention names) so I'm guessing you look and feel cool with your Leather jacket,throwing your horn's in the air? I seen these guys on the last tour and Ira was the best thing about the band. Super cool dude. He probably got arrested for rockin to hard. My only complaint about the show was the other dude on guitar, talk about sloppy. That guy should be replaced asap, super gay stage moves too. Stay strong Ira keep eating nuts and berries bro, more hamburgers for me :}

Just because I'm in the know about all things bordon and you have to wonder what its like to have the real scoop on whats going on, I know fact.
Yea I saw their L.A. show, maybe 75 people showed. sad..... I had to leave after a few songs but i will agree that it is totally unecessary to have a second guitarist in that band. they would sound much tighter and not look so gay if they got rid of the dead weight with the over inflated ego.

I don't sympathize with this guy at all. The only case he's got is why they should make exceptions for religious reasons, but not him.
That being said, the judicial system, and the laws in this country are complete shit. Luckily cops seem to be some of the most retarded people on the planet, so not getting caught for things that shouldn't be outlawed in the first place is fairly simple.

Seems like Ira is the primary one with the problem here. That being said, give the guy a little extra on the veggie and fruit portions- in one way or the other - and that is that. No one else has taken this issue pertaining to vegans in jail to this extent so give him a little extra fruits & veggies and take out the meat.
Yet at the same time, when you're locked up, you're not supposed to be enjoying the meals there unless you have a lot of money, then there are priviliges. Veganism isn't only for dietary purposes but moral reasons also. If it was only for his dietary reasons, then too bad. If it is because he is solely against the slaughtering of animals, well that's almost religious within itself. He shouldof just said it was against his damn religion to eat slaughtered animals. This could of avoided a lot of issues that might actually end up with him becoming the assmuppet of the Yr in the LA men's correctional facility.

i'm still able to leave the country & go to metal festivals in europe without the slightest hassle , either from austrlian customs or euopean customs & i've been to europe 4 times in the last 5 years & NEVER had a hassle....oh but god fucken forbid if i ever attempted to go to america.i know without a doubt i would NEVER be able to step foot in america with my exstensive history & after seeing this post & all the really ultra-right wing ,ultra conservative vomit that has been puked out by you miserable fucks ,i'm not sure i would ever want to come to your shitty country.No i'm not some dreadlocked ,unshowered lefty & i'm not that proud of my rap sheet ,only coz i was caught that many times & i ain't no australian patriot either , i don't vote (voting makes NO difference the cops will ALWAYS be there!!) but the apparent unparalleled ignorance i've seen here is disturbing & enrages me.now i realize how lucky i am that we have a VERY tolerant system here , NO 3 strikes.only 2 days ago i was spoken to by the cops for nodding off (obviously being under the influence of heroin) in a public place , all they told me to do was to move along & that was it , no name check,no bag or body check , nothing.i wasn't getting any "special" treatment ,but you americans ,i heard that f the cops drug test you over there & it comes back positive that you can get done for "internal possession" , what the fuck???.....what kind of fucken joke charge is that ?? & basically anytime/everytime the cops are called on any individual for ANY reason jail time is THE definite result -only in good old america.once again i'm gobsmacked beyond words at how easy it is to be thrown in jail over the most trivial crap.i know it looks (according to my rap sheet) like i got away with murder practically ,if i got caught for any of this in your "wonderful"country i would be doing life & i hav'nt even murdered anyone.NO i don't have fancy lawyers(the australian government pays for my lawyers thru a service called legal aid) & am certainly NOT related to anyone in the police force ,prosecution or a judge that i've gotten away with my list of charges(& we don't have this stupid thing you call felonies) THAT many times without a prison sentence -EVER.australia is just more accepting & realistic of the fact that-people DO make mistakes ,no one is perfect & that we deserve a second chance.big deal i stole things(& still do :) ) , got into fights , used false I.D.'s to buy prescription drugs & sold (& still sell) stolen goods, had drugs on me(heroin),failed to appear in court ,violated my probation.... ALL multiple times ,so does that make me less of a human ??,should i spend an eternity in jail for apart from the assaults committing basically victimless crimes ?? i don't have to think twice about what kind of opinion 1 of you conservative fucks would have of either me or our legal system , which is infinitley & incomparably more forgiving than your wanker fuck american system.i'm not anti-american either just against conservative , ignorant fucks who believe that their corrupt , anti-human , anti -freedom system works ,yeah wait til the day you become a vicitm of american police brutality.....so what did ira black do that was so heinous ?? not pay a fine ?? , what was the original charge ?? probably NOTHING ,& they want $65000 bail for an unpaid fine ?? , what a fucken shameful waste of resources & you patriotic fucks are proud of "your" country.....seriously fuckwits -get a life ,you wankers DON'T belong in the church of metal & the other losers who think being vegetarian is unmetal , you can all get fucked as well.....i am absolutley repulsed at the ignorance i have witnessed here.....beyond abnormal......beyond hope.....
