CYNIC, TEXTURES Members Join Forces In EXIVIOUS - Jan. 17, 2009
Fusion metal — a relatively new and unexplored genre in the world of metal. Holland's EXIVIOUS marks a first to truly marry jazz fusion with metal into a coherent new style. Featuring members of legendary U.S. prog band CYNIC and Dutch metallers TEXTURES, EXIVIOUS isn't an over-the-top math metal band and certainly isn't a loungy jazz combo either. But expect everything in between!

With a jazz fusion backbone, EXIVIOUS uses freaky metal riffs to decorate their organic eruption of free improvisations and complex rhythms. Guitarist Tymon comments: "We finally managed to transform a vision I had a long time ago into nine intense and fiery songs. There's an immense amount of information in there that will definitely take more than one spin in your CD player to comprehend!"

The band will release its debut album independently to preserve 100% creative freedom. This is not only evident in their music but also in the artwork. Their self-titled CD will appear in a limited 1,000 numbered copies, each single copy bundled with its own unique artwork.

An mp3 stream of the song "Waves Of Thought" is available on the EXIVIOUS web site.

EXIVIOUS is:

Tymon (CYNIC) - Guitar
Michel Nienhuis (ex-SENGAIA) - Guitar
Robin Zielhorst (CYNIC, ex-BLUE MAN GROUP) - Bass
Stef Broks (TEXTURES) - Drums

That's pretty cool. You can certainly tell it's the guys from Cynic though, and I like it XD

COMMENT | Not only are Exivious not a new band by any means..

Tymon and Robin started Exivious LONG before they joined Cynic.

Plus, the whole 'metal-fusion' thing is nothing new. Alarum? Cynic? Pestilence?

Er, that is to say Tymon started Exivious. They programmed the bass on their first demo I think.

I really REALLY want to like this... but this (at least to my ears) just sounds like a slightly metal-ized version of Road Games by Allan Holdsworth... It's a shame but I can't really give this track a positive remark... I'll still check out the album when it comes out though... Traced In Air was awesome and I like Exivious's earlier stuff (Where We Belong!!!)

It sounds a lot like Holdsworth that's true but that's a plus in my book because I like Holdsworth's atonal legato style a lot: He's a genius and these guys are raally good:
Thumbs up.

I love metal. I also love and play Jazz. But no band has ever really combined the two. This shit isn't Jazz, it's prog rock with some slight Holdsworth influences. So basically, it sounds like Cynic, except that Cynic is pretty fucking good.

*sigh* It would be nice to actually hear a band that could combine Metal with the likes of Miles Davis or Pat Metheny. But no, you always get these lame, obscure Prog Rock/Metal bands. And don't get me wrong - Progressive Rock and Metal is another genre that I absolutely love. But this shit isn't Jazz. There IS a difference. Leave it to annoying journalists to label anything with melody and compound time signatures as "Jazz". I swear, people in music journalism never have any idea what the fuck they're talking about.

The closest bands to ever do it were Cynic and Atheist (mostly Atheist, since they actually had Latin Jazz in their sound); but even those two bands were more Metal than Jazz. "Fusion Metal" doesn't really fucking exist, sorry. It's Progressive Rock. Which again, doesn't necessarily make it bad. Do your homework on what Jazz really is, is what I'm saying. Because it's an incredible genre that everyone should listen to =]

Tymon played me some early Exivious stuff back in '01 or '02 when we were part of the Line 6 POD forum; he helped me with some distorted direct-line tones. What a great player and terrific guy. This tune ROCKS! Must have played it 10 times yesterday! Will be ordering the CD the minute it's released. These guys are onto something; Metal & Fusion are two great genres, and these guys mix it all very well. Good luck guys! Guess I'm going to practice extra hard today, haha. \m/

I had never heard of this group except for their recent association with Cynic. Cynic put them on the map. Their stuff is good, but Cynic's stuff is amazing!
