SLIPKNOT Percussionist CHRIS FEHN: 'I Think We're Going To Overtake METALLICA'

SLIPKNOT percussionist Chris Fehn has high hopes for the band's future. "I think we're going to overtake METALLICA," Fehn told KansasCity.com in a recent interview. "We're going to overtake any band that sells out soccer arenas in Europe. We're going to do it. We're the last chance as far as the world goes." "They (fans) keep showing up, and it's getting better and better every year," Fehn said. And musically, he thinks SLIPKNOT has yet to peak. "We haven't even made our 'Black' record yet," Fehn said, referring to the 1991 "Metallica" CD that made METALLICA the undisputed kings of the heavy metal scene. "Wait until we do that. It's over, dude." Regarding SLIPKNOT's upcoming headlining U.S. tour in support of the "All Hope Is Gone" CD, Fehn said, "It's kind of a surprise for now. But we're going to play some really original, like different kind of stuff. We've got a great set put together. We've got four records now, so we've got a lot to choose from." I don't listen to Slipknot, but I don't dislike them either. They might have a big fan base and things going for them right now, but I really don't believe they'll be bigger or a more classic act than Metallica, who've inspired just about every other metal act since 1986...

For one i would hate to be the metal band announcing that they are on their way of becomming bigger than METALICA????? For some reason i just don't see SLIPKNOT being that band. NICKLEBACK is more like it, every 10 yr old kid and their parents love NICKLEBACK ha ha ha ha ha ha......HEY I CAN'T POKE FUN I WORE OUT 2 CASSETTES OF "SLIPPERY WHEN WET" when i was a kids....... thats a BON JOVI album for those of you who are SLIPKNOT fans i know you weren't even thought of at this time.....

Oy my god this is utter bullshit. BULLSHIT.Slipknot is a fad. No one really listens to em anymore. at least not as much as when Iowa came out. They're just a spectacle. People go to knot shows just because of what they do live. The music isnt timeless like Metallica. A band like Metallica will live for a long time because the music has that timeless quality. People arent gonna be listenin to Slapnut in 15 years goin "yeah man. This is the way real metal is supposed to sound" like they would with a band such as Metallica.

I’m a fan …. But this seems to be a symptom of the band in general, every time Cory opens his mouth recently it's pure ego.
Anyone see Slipknot jumping around in masks and boiler suits in 15 years time? Metallica have a massive legacy and to put your selves in that league is just silly. We the people decide those matters not the band.

Any band or band member that need to make that claim, has clearly had the fame go to their head. I won't say I dislike Slipknot's music, I think their s/t and Iowa CD's are brilliant, and to some extent I like V3 and AHIG but more for a different reason and sound, not really as Slipknot albums.
HOWEVER, the point I'm trying to make is, if you want to be that band, do it by proving it, it shouldn't need to be said. That really goes for any band. If you're going to do something, prove it and do it, don't say you're going to do it, it shouldn't need to be said!

I agree with some of your points but to call a multi platinum band with a four album ten year career a fad is a bit silly. Their latest album kept "The Game" off the number one spot and the tour is selling out all over the place proving they are as popular as ever. I don’t even like the new album, Is it timeless metal? Only time will tell.

He's probably right. Slipknot are getting to be more relevant to the current generation than Metallica are, but that's not to say that they have a fly's dick of a chance of reaching the kind of success Metallica enjoyed in their black album era. Because they don't.

Actually, in regards to those referring to slipknot as a trend, i believe people are taking them as serious as ever...
hell, where im from you couldnt walk out your front door a few years back without seeing some scene pricks walkin around with their shirts etc etc, nowadays i barely see any
I think slipknot has sifted through the trend followers and created a more mature fanbase
or maybe thats just where i live ;)

I think Slipknot is over though, They may still be alive and active as a band but people have known about them for years, They were popular for a while and now outside a few huge pockets of fans nobody really cares about them.
As far as Metallica goes, say what you will about them "selling out" or being "dead since 1989" or whatever you might think but they continue to sell records, shows all over the world including a good 90-95% of the shows or more of the soon to be wrapping up first lag of the US tour.
If anything from what I've seen and started to hear, Metallica's on it's 2nd wind. They've picked up a lot of steam and are starting to blow up agin.
This guy doesn't seem to be taking any pot shots at Metallica but he's clearly not even close to in touch with reality because as long as Metallica is out playing and making records, they're staying firmly enthroned at #1.

I'll admit that I was a huge Slipknot fan when their first album came out.... as far as them not making their "black" album yet, I would have to say that they started off with it because that was the only cd of theirs that took me over a year to take it out of my cd player... Iowa was about the same... after that I won't comment on.... I think you definitely have to have some big balls to say something like "we will overtake Metallica." I agree with 98% of the post on here when we all say the fame has gone to his head..... I would never say that especially when Metallica is still touring stronger than ever.... 20+ years compared to 10??? I think Slipknot will be lucky if they stay together another 10 years..... even then I don't think it would matter cause the way Metallica is going, they will still be around in 10 years.... It all boils down to either this guy made some stupid comments he shouldn't have or somebody twisted some words for this story.

I lost hope in these guys a while back. I was watching a video not too long ago... I think it was called Dead Memories or something... holy shit... I did not know Slipknot turned into a pop band. Great job guys, you are on your way to superstardom alongside New Kids on The Block, Backstreet Boys... hey maybe your singer can try out on American Idol.
The only reason these guys are where they are is the media. The same people that market Hilary Duff, Britney Spears and the like also market bands like Slipknot. There are far better bands out there that do not get noticed because they do not have the marketing machines behind them.
Take a chill pill pal and watch your mouth, you will eat those words sooner or later.

The band needs goals. I'd rather hear this than 'I think we have one more album left in us'. Living in Iowa, I will defend these guys forever as I've supported them in Bodypit, the first Stone Sour, etc. Truth is, many of you wish you would have the opportunity to be in a band that could compete with Metallica...instead you are working a dead end job or just trying to make it thru school. I loved Slipknot's first two albums, but the last two have had one or no good songs on them if that. However, I've seen them live several times and they put on one hell of a powerful fun show, so as far as attracting a lot of people at venues, I think they could do it.

You have to be a METAL band in order to overtake Metallica. Slipknot's first album was their "Black Album". Theses days, they to "overtake metallica" has pass them by.
The only band that overtook metallica was PanterA, and they still do to this day even though they are no longer active.

Slipknot will overtake Metallica's spot as the most disappointing band in metal. It took Metallica 2 decades to make shitty music, whereas Slipknot took less than a year. I've sat through an entire hour of Slipknot live and their first couple albums or so, and there is absolutely no musical value in anything they produce. I don't care what Metallica does now because I respect the first 2/3 of their career up until the Napster/St. Anger chapter. Slipknot, however, have yet to give me a reason to acknowledge them as a musical act at all. Decent drummer (the one behind the set), nothing more.

Chris must obviously be joking. The lad has got a good humour. Commercially Slipknot are doing better than ever. I don't really know about the US, but in Europe they sold out quite a few venues on their last tour. Overtaking Metallica, however, is just not going to happen. The self-titled album and Iowa were great albums, Vol. 3 was not bad either, but All Hope Is Gone came as a bit of a disappointment. It reminds me too much of Stone Sour. Now, I do love Stone Sour as well, but they should stop blending the sounds of these bands together. Otherwise you just get watered down Slipknot albums that lack the aggression of the old days. I guess this new direction makes for a bigger fanbase, but it does not seem to work for the people who were really into the material on the first two albums.
So, please Slipknot, don't aim to make your Black Album, but rather try and make a Reign In Blood instead.

First off i like Slipknot and Chris is even my favorite member of the band but, if you're going to overtake Metallica think again. If Slipknot are going to put out their "Black Album" they better do it soon even when they do it they won't overtake The Kings of Heavy Metal they still got so more to do to even think that. Metallica has been around for a long time now they are my favorite band and they are the reason i started to listen to Heavy Metal and without Metallica the Heavy Metal world right now would be in total chaos of course there is still Slayer and and well i can't think of anybody else right now that has had a big impact on Heavy Metal like they have had. Slipknot you still have yet to make your big impact on the world of Heavy Metal music. The self titled album of Slipknot's is still my favorite of theirs. Iowa had a few good songs on it Vol.3 was good and the new one i haven't heard all of it yet but, there is a few cool songs that i have heard off of it.

Ok, so I understand that everyone thinks their band is amazing and would want to portray themselves as such. However, Chris might be biting off more than he can chew. As of December '08 All Hope is Gone (released a few weeks before Death Magnetic) had only achieved gold album status (in the U.S. at least, and I would bet that is where their strongest market is). Death Magnetic achieved platinum status in October that same year. Say what you want about that album, it came from a band which has been around for the better part of 30 years. If Slipknot still exists after that long, and continue to make somewhat relevant records, I will eat my words.
As far as "their Black Album" is concerned, the Black Album has achieved diamond status, that's sales of 10 million or more in the U.S. alone. This is so because a wide range of music fans have purchased it over the years. And yes, I am basing success and quality of product on sales, most people would. Metal fans of all ages have bought and continue to buy that album. The largest success though is from the crossover success it has achieved. People would wouldn't normally buy metal CDs, even other Metallica CDs, have bought the Black Album. Business men, soccer moms, etc. Many of you may think this is a bad thing, but if you created a product which had such a wide range of appeal, you must be doing something right. Heck, my 90 year old grandmother has heard of Metallica and she gave up on the current music scene back in the 60s or 70s. Slipknot on the other hand is criticized as being too hoaky and gimmicky by many of my metal head friends.
In closing, Slipknot might not want to have the same level of success Metallica has been granted, some may argue that it would compromise their credibility or they may have to water themselves down in order to do that. If commercial success and name recognition is what they're going for, cool. However, if they want to stay true to "their in your face aggressive metal roots" they will have to be content with where they are and stop making statements which could never become even close to a reality.

i don't like them at all, they're not real metal anyway, music sucks with turntables and samples, but had to say that joey is wwaaaaaayyy bettterrr drummer than lars period. an advice ...fire half the band, don't use samples or turntables( that is trendy) and play metal only after that may you will have a chance!!

I'm a fan of Slipknot, but an even bigger Metallica fan, but I don't think Slipknot or any other band could overtake a band like Metallica. I mean, Metallica's been around damn near 30 years and Slipknot has been around a fraction of that time. Even when Metallica decides to call it quits and retire, they'll still be bigger then Slipknot.
That's like saying you're gonna be bigger then Sabbath or Priest or Maiden. It's damn near impossible.

Whether you do or don't like Metallica is pretty irrelevant to this conversation because there's no denying their influence or success.
Slipknot's been around 10 years already, and although they've had some pretty good success, they're nowhere near as influential as Metallica were with even just Kill 'Em All through Master of Puppets. Therefore, it's ridiculous to think that they'll suddenly overtake them in those terms.

btw Mushroomhead aren't even in the same league as Slipknot. MH haven't been any good since their singer left. Judas priest haven't been any good since Painkiller...Venom hasn't been any good since??? oh shit..they were barely good during Black Metal. im sorry but ive been a slipknot fan since "Slipknot" came out. Loved "Iowa" when it came out, probaly their best cd ever made musically and lyrically. "Volume 3" was not that bad but i didnt like corey's ego with the Acoustic songs get in the way. Please leave that with Stone Sour and away from Slipknot Corey!!..Their new cd "All Hope Is Gone" is crap!! i dont know why the worlds seems to agree, maybe its because its the young kids listening to it. Any old school slipknot fan knows thats not what slipknot is all about. Theres only 2 good songs on that piece of crap. I didnt like "Volume 3" when it first came out, but i love it compared to this new one.
Point being here, slipknot will probaly not ever be bigger than metallica, but you can agree when they say they sell out arenas everywhere! they are a huge band today. Alot of young kids love them and buy their merch like crazy Or another reason could be that if it wasnt for their masks, they wouldnt be as popular as they are now.
im 20 and ive been listening to them since i was 12, but seriously kids. Theres alot of more Heavy stuff out there.

I am a hardcore "First 4" Metallica fan. And there is just no way Slipknot can craft an album as powerful and relevant as "Master of Puppets". This guy had better be ready to literaly sell his soul to achieve something even close. Slipknot have their place but supplanting Metallica isn't it.
