SLAYER's KERRY KING Demonstrates New MARSHALL Amp At NAMM; More Video Available

More video footage of SLAYER's Kerry King demonstrating the new Marshall MG range of amplifiers at a company breakfast press conference (8:30 a.m.!) at the 2009 winter NAMM ( National Association Of Music Merchants) show on January 15, 2009 in Anaheim, California can be viewed below (clip filmed by Jude Gold). 2009 will see the arrival of two new Kerry King signature collection guitars from B.C. Rich, called the Beast V and the Beast V NT. The Beast V is a hybrid design combining the Beast and Speed V body shapes, touting the Beast horns and the extended fins of the V. It's the Jackalope of B.C. Rich body styles. The Beast V NT will sport a neck-through construction, active B.C. Rich pickups and a Khaler Tremolo, while the standard Beast V will be outfitted with a string-through / tune-o-matic bridge and B.C. Rich B.D.S.M. humbuckers.

Can't doubt his contributions to thrash.. reign is one of the all-time best. But man, he might be the crappiest pro guitarist I know. Sounds like every second bedroom shredder who is playing way too loud at Guitar Center. Kerry stopped caring about his skills long before his hairline started to recede, sometime in the mid-80s.

Kerry King has written incredible, inspirational music. While playing with Slayer the occasional sloppy technique can be easily obscured. He is a thrash rhythm machine.. but by no means is he the kind of guitarist you'd want to listen to sans backing band. Very few strictly metal players are. Zack WYLDE gets boring when just shredding untill he starts throwing in country hybrid picking or something more than 3 note repetative pentatonic scale runs at 200 bpms, and any idiot who has half a clue about guitar knows that Zakk has way more technique than Kerry.
Like the bands you like: listen to the music you like. Whether that be simple stuff like the Ramones, the White Stripes or the later day Darkthrone, or listen to teched out stuff like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Zappa, Decrepit Birth, Danny Gatton, Braindrill, or what ever "billion notes a minute" stuff you like. Just because you like a band doesn't mean the individual musicians are great. Lars's technique sucks compared to Vinnie Caulouta (sp?) yet he plays on some of the most popular music of our time and has definately inspired more players than Vinnie to pick up a pair of drum sticks.
I know these forums exist for the purpos of debate but come on.... it's the same shit every day... he sucks, he rules... ussually culminating in some body cussing out somebody else.
I suspect it's my turn.

He keeps looking back at the amp. Kerry is very obvious. If he is endorsing this amp its ONLY for money. He isn't happy with the sound. Watch he wants to change something, he keeps walking back to the amp then realizing what he wants isn't there.

I don't know why everybody gets so bent out of shape when their favorites get dissed on by others. To each his own. And to everyone saying to post a video that's better, one doesn't have to be an expert guitarist to have a valid opinion that someone else sucks or isn't as good as the competition.
While I like slayer, I've never thought they were as good as their diehard fanbase makes them out to be. The lead guitar work has a lot to do with that. Very few of the solos are memorable, and most all contain the same atonal, chromatic noise without much variety in technicality. They do have whammy skills, though, and there's something to be said for that.

Two totally different tones... you can not get a "Marshall" tone on a Rectifier though unlike Marshall you can get 4 channels of great tones instead of 1.

Uhg, that was bad. Although unsure if he had to play slayer stuff. He should just improve some shit. Wonder how long that went on for . . . I'd have to agree it sounds like me when I was a kid after playing guitar for a few months and thinking I was something cause I could play slayer riffs. Oh well, least slayer made some good riffs. I believe I read in a interview he never practices / plays when not touring. Shows there

Triple rectifier has 2 distortion tones not 1. I like 'some' Marshall tones out there, but I have yet to hear any amp (including Line 6) perfectly match the Mesa's channel 3 tone.
Not to mention, as a performing musician you can't beat Mesa's SOLO switch. It effectively boosts your volume without altering the tone. That's why it's patented and no other manufacturer has one.

You guys need to RELAX.
He's just warming up and this is not by any means an "appreciation" of skills, he's just kinda messing around. He sure doesn't seem very concentrated or "into it" on the clip, but whatever. He obviously is not trying to SELL his skills here, just testing out an amp in front of people.
PS: MOST GUYS AT THE LOCAL MUSIC SHOP, even though they're not your average Joe Headbanger, I'm sure they do NOT sound studio perfect when they're trying to show you a new amp. Screw-ups don't matter in this case.

I've got nothing against the guy, but it's a fact for YEARS that those guys are street-level musicians. This was a fact for a long time! Anyone who knows thrash or Slayer knows this and isn't shocked by this display.
He's not used to having to show how good the gear is. He probably wanted to sound clear, but then had to deal with the fact that he's sloppy. Kerry's got to stop playing with his serpents and play the geetar more.
A lot of guys get better by their 100th show on tour.
Lazy sod.
"DannyBonaduce" mentioned that the pants make Kerry look like a midget. I must agree, a bald one at that, but it goes to show how much he cares.
The audio quality is so bad, I can't tell if the amp or guitar are worth a fuck anyway.

I like the fact that all he is interested in is playing Slayer riffs, he's stated many time that he can't jam. He doesn't give two fucks about anything outside of Slayer, that's why they have remained so focused and consistant, are you listening Slipknot?
Slayer is 3 average musicians + one great drummer = 1 AWESOME band.

I fucking LOVE Slayer, but Kerry sounds like a 14 year old kid whose been playing guitar for a year or two. Plus, he plays the exact same "demo" that he played in the previous video, presumably the day before. Same licks, same sloppy "War Ensemble" solo.
I think I agree with the others that state that as a 4-some, Slayer is fucking killer, Kerry is most definitely not an "a-cappella" kind of guy. Couldn't he have come up with something a bit more varied than that?

It's a simple thing called "pride". Pride in your abilities as a musician, to not just half-ass it because it's "just a demo". If Kerry really does just suck these days, but was giving it his all, I'd have way more respect for him than if he could play better, but chose not to because he just doesn't give a fuck, demo or not.

Every 14 Year old can play much better than Kerry for sure! But who cares? Look at Guys like Max Cavallera. Very bad Guitar player, but Song writing Genius. Or look at Metallica. Ulrich is one of the weakest Drumers out there, and Hammet sucks live! Even Hetfield sucks with vocals! But together they are THE strongest Metal Band on Earth. Its not about the Skills, it’s about the passion!!
