RollingStone.com got a sneak preview of Guitar Hero: Metallica, which is only the second in the popular gaming franchise to be based around a specific artist. According to RollingStone.com's report, the game's storyline was conceived by frontman James Hetfield and lets players begin as METALLICA's opening act, eventually getting to play as the members of METALLICA themselves if they can make it that far.

The menu art is done by longtime METALLICA artist Pushead, while the venues and stage sets are taken from all eras of the band's quarter-century career. The virtual band members each do signature moves, from drummer Lars Ulrich popping up from behind his kit to bassist Robert Trujillo's trademark crabwalk across the stage. The members all start out looking like they do today, but can also revert back to younger versions of themselves. Previous bassists Jason Newsted and the late Cliff Burton do not appear in the game.

Trujillo told The Pulse of Radio why he thinks the Guitar Hero franchise is great for music. "I'm not a gamer, but I actually think it's a great thing in the sense that it's helping to educate our youth and older people about rock 'n' roll and heavy metal in particular, you know, bands like IRON MAIDEN and BLACK SABBATH, and I think that's important," he said.

The band had to go through an extensive motion-capture process in order to make them come to life in the game, and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett told The Pulse of Radio the final result was a little unsettling. "Once they've actually made a virtual you and you start seeing that virtual you playing METALLICA songs, it's a trip, man," he said. "It's like watching a hologram of yourself or, you know, a cartoon of yourself or whatever. It's strange because it's weird and different but oddly familiar at the same time."

Gameplay is available on vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, with an added skill level for double-bass drumming. There is not, however, an option for two players to play lead and rhythm guitar at the same time, like Hetfield and Hammett do in real life.

The game also comes with bonus features such as live videos, footage of the band being filmed for the game, and archival material from the group's history.

Also, take out (I love these songs, but I think there are better) Enter Sandman and Sad But True and put in Phantom Lord and The Frayed Ends Of Sanity. That would be the ultimate setlist

lol. I wrote that as a joke but afterwards I did notice they probably left out Four Horseman on purpose.

Seriously though you probably can't ask for a better set of songs. I was impressed that No Leaf Clover was on there. I find that to be an overlooked gem. I was unimpressed to see Disposeable Heroes on there ahead of Leper Messiah. I know it isn't a favorite but I always look for Leper Messiah and seeing Disposeable Heroes go on there in favor of it was a surprise.

The boys are back in town instead of Whiskey in the jar was also kind of weird. All in all though it was a surprisingly good list. Should be fun.

Where's the tunes from the still awesome "The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited?" Helpless? The Small Hours? The Wait? Crash Course in Brain Surger?

Newsted's Metallica debut. He was jammin the bass like a mofo on this E.P. only to be mixed right out of the "Justice" album.

That shit was the jam cassette back in the day when me and my head bangin' bud cruised the strip in my Chevette. Smokin' erb and dowin' Busch Beer by the fistful.

They should make it downloadable content at the very least.

I can not believe that almost 80 percent of the Metallica tracks are songs that Cliff played on, they are using his original tracks, not ones that Rob has rerecorded, and yet THEY DON'T HAVE A CLIFF BURTON CHARACTER TO UNLOCK because they feel that it might hurt Rob's feelings. WHAT THE HELL!

Cliff helped in getting them where they are today. They are acknowledging him when they get inducted into the Hall of Fame, why not celebrate him in this video game that will be sold in the millions around the world.

Give credit where credit is DUE.

"umm missing: Harvester, Phantom, Horsemen, Ride, Ktulu!"

Here is why they didn't include Phantom, Horsemen, Ride and Ktulu: Dave Mustaine has a writing credit on all of those. They don't want him tryin' to nab none of their cheddar.

As for Harvester, I don't know what happened. That song rocks and should be on there. One of their most memorable riffs, and it's all about guitar, right? Hence the lack of material from the Loads and St. Anger. Although, St. Anger did have some nice riffage in some parts... But I guess you can't tune those guitar controllers down to drop C rofl....

Here's a question. I noticed that you will be able to play bass on all the songs as well as guitar, drums and also singing. For the AJFA songs, will you even be able to hear the bass? Will they turn the bass up in the mix? Or when you start playing, will the little moving graphic with the notes you have to hit just be a constant void, perpetually moving with no notes shown until the end of the song while you watch Rob doing his crab walk around stage and not playing anything?

The lack of Phantom Lord is extremely discouraging.

The fact that they did get two Kill 'em All tracks, though, works though.

Creeping Death is fucking great, glad to see almost all of MoP. But choosing Disposable Heroes over Damage, Inc., was a retarded move in my opinion. It sounds like a perfect encore.

Here's hoping Hit the Lights is the final encore instead of MoP. I've been thinking it'd be perfect as the final encore since I heard about the game, and it's inclusion makes me happy. Either it or Whiplash.

I'm not a fan at all of 'tallica post MoP, but this setlist looks fun enough to pay for.

Whoops, 3 from Kill 'em All.

Also, that version of One best be a live recording or something. I got tired of that song in GH3.

There totally should have been a Mustaine boss fight near the end, and he and Kirk play something as a sort of burying the hatchet moment.

They at least should bother showing him a little bit of recognition, as he's the reason they had their first two albums. Well, first and a half.

Why didn't they do a guitar hero game for each album? Give your earlier work the credit it deserves rather than the trash metallica's churned out in the later years, I've no interest in anything released after Justice 4 all.
I want to play sweet metallica songs with quality riffing rather than borring chorus. Screw your target audience, you bastards. I'll play air guitar instead.
