QUEENSRŸCHE: Complete 'American Soldier' Details Revealed - Jan. 27, 2009
QUEENSRŸCHE envisions war through the eyes of a soldier with the band's twelfth studio release, the epic concept album "American Soldier". The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group's singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts — from World War II to Iraq — Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a solider and the consequences of war.

"American Soldier" will be available from Atco/Rhino on March 31 for a suggested list price of $18.98 (CD) and $9.99 (digital).

Tate, Michael Wilton (guitar), Ed Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) recorded the album in 2008 over the course of nine months. The idea for "American Soldier", Tate says, came from hearing stories from fans that are veterans, as well as his own father, who served in both Korea and Vietnam. "My father was a career military man, but until very recently he never spoke about what he went through," he states. "I think that reticence is true of a lot of veterans, which means most people never truly understand what it means to be a soldier at war. Hearing what he and some of our fans have endured made me want to share their stories with the world. This is an album about the soldiers, for the soldiers, as told by the soldiers themselves."

Those stories resonate at the heart of "American Soldier", imbuing each song with vivid details about both the emotional and physical impacts of war, evoking war zone battles ("Middle Of Hell"), sacrifice ("The Killer"), loss ("If I Were King"), the longing for home ("Remember Me"), and adjusting to society after returning from war ("Man Down!").

Tate recorded many of his interviews with the soldiers, and some dialogue from these discussions is mixed into several of tracks, allowing the soldiers' own words to help tell their compelling stories. The band also brought a few of the soldiers into the studio with them to record vocals. The verses of the track "Unafraid" feature the voices of Chris Devine, a Vietnam veteran, and Sean Lenahan, a veteran of Somalia, recalling their war experiences while Tate provides the anthemic chorus. Also making a guest vocal appearance is Tate's 10-year-old daughter Emily on the gripping duet "Home Again", which examines the emotional toll of war from two perspectives, with Geoff singing from the soldier's point of view and his daughter singing from the viewpoint of the child left behind.

Making the album, Tate says, was an enlightening process. "I was surprised to learn how little has changed through the generations," he reveals. "I spoke with a Vietnam vet whose experience wasn't all that different from a soldier who fought in Somalia almost 30 years later. But what surprised me the most was how antiwar most soldiers are. To me, that makes their sacrifices even more moving."

Soon after the release of "American Soldier", QUEENSRŸCHE will launch an extensive spring tour of the U.S., with international dates to follow later in 2009. The shows will be presented in three suites, with the band performing sets from "American Soldier", "Rage For Order", and "Empire". The first date of the tour will be April 16 at Snoqualmie Casino in the band's hometown of Seattle.

I hate to be the first negative poster on this subject, but - this just sounds fucking awful. A really bad idea for the current times, I mean it sounds contrived and people just aren't in the mood for this kinda shit. Well, good luck to Queensryche. Their last couple of albums were complete and utter cow poo poo, so this one can't possibly be any worse.

I really hope they bring it on home on this one, Mindcrime 2 was a return to form, they need to consolodate that now, I reckon they can do it.

THESE STUPID FUCKIN RECORD COMPANIES JUST DON'T GET IT AND THEY NEVER WILL UNTIL THEY ARE OUT OF BUSINESS.

SINGLE CD'S SHOULD HAVE A "SUGGESTED LIST PRICE" OF $9.99 NOT $18.99 OTHERWISE WE'RE JUST GONNA STEAL IT ANYWAY. I'LL BE BUYING,BURNING AND RESELLING THIS DISC THE DAY IT COMES OUT. TOTAL COST TO ME = about a buck maybe 2 tops.

You do understand that just because that's the suggested price, that pretty much no store will sell it for that. I bet it'll be 11.99 on amazon, and the week it's released it'll be around that same price at Best Buy......

Mike Stone is not playing on the record...but still part of the touring band, I think. I'm very happy about the Rage for order segment for the new show...it'll be awesome.

I was not aware Stone was not a part of the recording line-up.... Strange, since he was a co-writer of most songs on O:M II....!

I know all about the fake suggested retail price bullshit. It's what help ruin the music industry. A CD with a suggested retail of $9.99 will mean a store price of $7.99 which is what a disc should sell for. Older catalog stuff should be LESS !

I will always like and respect these guys, but pretty much after Hear In The Now Frontier and the subsequent tour, I gave up on them. Too many medoicre albums, anything they've done since then doesn't even come close to the older material. I can listen to Mindcrime at the drop of a hat, and always enjoy it, but you could take the best of each album they've done in the past ten years and you couldn't even fill up a cd. They are one of the few bands out there that for reasons unexplained lost their ability to write a good song overnight. Or maybe it's just because DeGarmo isn't in the mix anymore.

The concept sounds great to me. I'm worried, though, about Mike Stone not being involved in the writing. OMII was the first good album they made since Promised Land, and I don't know if the original members are able to write quality rock songs anymore. If they put out another record full of lifeless crap like Tribe, it will be the final end for them.

Either way, I will definitely be seeing this tour, as Rage and Empire are my two favorite albums by them. Seeing them do Chemical Youth as openers for Metallica was the first time I realized that they were really something special. I hope they have that song in their set on this tour.

Everyone is saying that Stone was not involved in the writing... Do we know that for sure? The fact that Wilton plays all the parts on the recording (to give it more of an old Ryche flavor) doesn't necessarily mean that Stone wasn't involved in the writing process...

That cover looks too much like Amar es combatir(to love is to fight) of the latin rock band Mana.

Anyway I'm just saying.
