METAL MANIACS And METAL EDGE Magazines Closing Their Doors? - Feb. 4, 2009
Several writers for Metal Maniacs magazine have reported receiving word yesterday (Tuesday, February 3) that both Metal Maniacs and its sister publication Metal Edge have shut their doors effective immediately, with one more issue of each title still set to come out. It should be noted, however, that the two magazines' publisher, Zenbu Media, has not yet officially corroborated this information.

Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs, two of the leading heavy metal magazines in the U.S., have been publishing for 24 years and 19 years, respectively. The two publications were acquired by Zenbu Media in February 2007.

Covering bands across the hard rock spectrum — from classic metal to thrash to punk — Metal Edge is considered a leading voice in the mainstream metal media. In existence since 1985, Metal Edge was published twelve times a year — providing in-depth coverage of current musical acts, including band profiles, news of the latest releases and coverage of the biggest tours.

Metal Maniacs has given exposure to the best underground metal bands. Scouring the globe for the greatest unheard-of artists, Metal Maniacs has, for nearly 20 years, provided one of the few outlets for these acts and a way for fans to unearth the greatest unheralded hard rock outfits.

Based in New York City, Zenbu Media is a music-oriented multi-pronged media company that specializes in print, digital, events and recordings.

Re Maniacs, the Katherine Turman years were the best -- metal was still vital and her editing was actually professional. Plus, the Thrash Bits were newsworthy...ah, life before the Internet.

Re Edge, somewhere Gerri Miller is crying in her Cheerios.

So Sad. I still have all my back issues of Metal Edge from the 80's/early 90's. It was THE best music mag. The articles were filled with detail and had up to date information. Hit Parader always had articles that were written months in advance so they'd say a new CD was "out now" even though it was still weeks away. Another cool thing about Metal Edge was the articles went from one page to the next until the end. They weren't split up so that you'd have to keep flipping to the back to finish reading. Also, the captions for the photos in the articles weren't just quotes lifted directly from the article, they were nuggets of new info. It was little details like that that made it the best. The mag. really went to shit after Gerri Miller left. Props to her! The end of an era!

This has absolutely nothing to do with the global economic crisis. The younger generation on a whole doesn't read magazines, they read sites like these instead. If less people are buying/reading the magazines then less company's are willing to advertise in them, which makes them less profitable, it's that simple.

I started off reading Circus Magazine back in my nu-metal phase in 1999-2003, then I got tired of the them putting Slipknot/SOAD on the cover on every issue. I moved to Revolver then Metal Edge.

But I agree that the internet killed metal magazines, there's no point in them now, mind as well merge as one big magazine.

i was more interested in Metal Maniacs, reading the interviews, reviews, demo section ect.(88-95) but later on during the yrs. that Metal maniacs was published (half the rag was all advertisment) which took away from the 3/4 to 1/2 page interviews, kinda like the way Pit Mag ended up. it was a good read and very informative (i bought alot of records because of the reviews printed and Nathan Burk's Apoclyptic Raids section was honest and featured the more Necro Blackened Metal that i digs. I think you would be hard-pressed to find another Metal Publication as widely respected and read as Metal Edge during the years Paul Gargano was in charge.

The coverage and interviews spanned almost everything within metal. Hell, even independent and unsigned artists could receive a minimal amount of coverage. Something that, quite frankly, REVOLVER never did. In fact, Revolver never really overtook Metal Edge until after Gargano left. The publication just wasn't the same.

This is seriously sad news as an institution in heavy music is now gone. R.I.P. Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs.

For real music fans, not just mainstream or poser music. Revolver is a good read sometimes, but they feature too many mainstream & rock bands. Terrorizer is awesome, too, but it's almost $10/issue here. Really, I haven't read Metal Maniacs in years because of the bad graphic design and cheap newsprint. Metal Maniacs was THE source of all sources for me starting in late 90/early 91 (aside from cassette inlays)...at one point I had purchased every single issue (I remember missing only one...the issue with Pantera/a bald Satyr on the cover) until about 2.5 or 3 years ago...indeed, the internet gives it to you up-to-the-minute and can provide so much more info than print publications...I have boxes upon boxes of old issues, ranging from mutilated and emaciated ones from high school (man I had so much fun cutting them up and taping photos onto my binders/folders...not to mention the influence on my art) to almost pristine issues of my more mature days...probably the best reason to read while I was on the crapper...lol...always respected the non-scoring reviews and intelligent insights...ALL HAIL AURAL ASSAULTS!!! Geez... remember the Katherine Ludwig/Chris Barnes/Glen Benton boycotts?...classic!!! They still have the website for now, I guess? Times have changed, but hopefully Liz and company will find a new, equally substantial avenue to bring the metal...thanks for the memories!!! (of course, assuming they actually are finished!)

Really the only reason to read a metal magazine is to read the interviews which may or may not be fully available online. We can get our metal news fill online. And reviews are like assholes...everyone has them. No need to pay to read them. And you can find MANY of them online for free. Also creative special features like scene biographies are cool too (which Revolver has in one of their newer issues). Sure the diehards will already 'know everything' but its cool to nevertheless read what they have to say about your favorite underground scene and to read musicians thoughts on them if available. But other than cool special features and the interviews...no real reason to buy a mag. Thats not to say you shouldnt. If you dig the interviews or special features in a particular issue then why not? But if they dont appeal to you then i dont see why one would bother. As said, who cares for their reviews and outdated news.

I do wonder why Metal Edge and Metal Maniacs have to close their doors if other metal magazines are still able to keep running. Such as the awesome Terrorizer. Just sell the publication if you cant/dont want to keep it running and have them massively cut costs (through overhead or whatever). Basically just have those magazines ran the same way Terrorizer and Decibel are ran. Its not like a major league sports league going through dire straights. You cant really turn them into a 'minor league' unless you want to drastically change the rosters. But metal mags dont really have that problem. As Id assume most of the people whod work for them, who are featured in the mags, would take a paycut. And even if they didnt...theyre not the reason people buy the magazines really. They buy it for the interviews and the cool features...not the people who write em. the problem will be replacing them with equally or more talented people.

When I first started dating my now wife in the late 80s, she bought me the very first issue of Metal Maniacs and I never missed an issue up until about four or five months ago now. It seems to have stopped being shipped into my secondary market. It was big part of my life.

Metal Edge sucked in the 80s because the mainstream metal climate was piss poor ("hair" metal) but it improved in the 90s and is great today.

It's not just the arrival of the internet but the apathy and low attention span of today's youth that is decimating the music and publishing world.

I'll never understand music fans that don't regularily buy magazines. I love Metal and buy up to 5-6 different publications a month.

As a staff writer for Metal Maniacs for over 13 years, I have some incredible memories of being a part of a great metal magazine. I am feeling shocked and sad right now. Just because BW&BK, Terrorizor and Decibel are here today, doesn't mean they won't be gone tomorrow...you have all made the good point that the Internet has done a great deal of damage to the world of magazine publishing in general. I see a major difference between the Internet and magazines, though, and that is in the quality of the writing. Writing for the web is meant to be taken in short doses; like the articles on your Yahoo home page, which can be read in seconds, giving you the basic gist of a story, but with no literary style or flair whatsoever. During the years that I considered our peak, the late 90s to early 2000s, we had an awesome staff of truly literate writers who were entertaining, knowledgable, and could turn some killer phrases. My kudos go out to Liz Ciavarella, Jeff Wagner, Perry Grayson, Dave Brenner, Marty Rytkonen, S. Craig Zahler, Scott Alisoglu, Keith Bergman (others I'm forgetting) and especially the mighty Mike Greenblatt, without whom none of this would have been possible. We had heated debates among readers who were just as passionate in their opinions as we were. Where did that fire go? Liz has done an amazing job of keeping Metal Maniacs up with the times, appealing to a younger generation and gradually phasing out the dinosaurs but letting us cover anything that floated our boat, basically, right up until the end. But the truth is, it seems that some of the fire has been dying, in the Guitar Hero generation of pre-fab, single-serving, easy to get, quickly digested and just as quickly forgotten music. The times, they are a-changin'.
What can I say other than heartfelt thanks to the loyal readers who kept Metal Maniacs going for 20 years. Thanks for the nice letters, the e-mails, the posts and good wishes when I met some of you at shows and events over the years. This is not the last you have heard from me.
With heavy (metal) heart,
Sue Nolz

Reading Metal Maniacs introduced me to underground metal. I will admit I haven't bought a copy in a few years though. Just like everyone else I really on sites like B-mouth now for my news.

I do agree with you Sue that the style of writing may be different on a website than in print but there really is no reason it needs to be. Start a blog and write whatever you like. Granted you may not make a living doing it but if it's something you love then you probably won't stop.

I'm not a some crusty metal geezer but I'm older than the "Guitar Hero Generation" and can say that while I don't care for a lot of newer metal (or metal younger kids seem to like anyway) I think it's a bit misguided to just blame their short attention spans or lack of respect or whatever else the geezers blame kids for. It really is just the fact that the internet has made it easy for more people to find more bands without a middle man. This doesn't necessarily explain why kids don't want informed analysis of their metal but it'd be my guess they just prefer to hash things out on their myspace pages and 4chan forums.
