THE CRAMPS Singer LUX INTERIOR Dead At 62 - Feb. 4, 2009
Lux Interior, lead singer of THE CRAMPS, passed away this morning at 4:30 a.m. PST due to an existing heart condition at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California. He was 62 years old.

Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy's contributions with THE CRAMPS have had an immeasurable impact on modern music.

THE CRAMPS emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max's Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures.

Interior, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser, was born October 21, 1946 in Ohio. He met Ivy in 1972 and started the band shortly thereafter.

According to Billboard.com, THE CRAMPS released fourteen albums over the course of their career. Their latest, 2004's "How To Make a Monster", sold 11,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Their best-selling album, 1984's "Bad Music for Bad People", has sold 95,000 copies.

Of course it's her real name, Poison Ivy was a totally hip name back in the '50s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison_Ivy_(musician)

On a more serious note, I was blown away by this band, and especially Lux as a frontman, when I saw them in Australia back in about '95. They were everything live rock 'n roll should be about, but very rarely is.

RIP Lux.

I was lucky enough to see Lux and The Cramps twice. The Cramps where everything a rock band should be. Most of all The Cramps where true to them selves. They did it their way. A lot more bands should try that. Bye Lux you'll be missed

That is awful news. The Cramps were almost as good live as they were on the album. Too bad I only saw them once. Sad..

First thought out of my mind is "Never saw them live." Bought their records and enjoyed it. Anytime I need a touch of weirdness in my life, the music is there for me.

Great personality and showmanship on tv and performances captured on dvd. The man didn't look his age at all.

The Cramps had a signature sound with style to match....

Though The Cramps had nothing to do with metal, they will always be remembered for their contribution and influence on the punk, modern rockabilly and psychobilly scenes.

R.I.P, Lux....
