MEGADETH Bassist Says New Album Has 'Old-School Kind Of Thrash-y Vibe' - Feb. 5, 2009
On January 7, MEGADETH commenced the recording process for its twelfth studio album at the band's own Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. The CD is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie" Sneap, who produced MEGADETH's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner Records).

Tentatively due later this year via Roadrunner Records, MEGADETH's forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who replaced Glen Drover at the end of 2007.

Commented bassist James Lomenzo: "Just finished my last set of bass tracks last night. I'm really pleased and excited for you all to hear the new stuff. At this stage, it's very cool with an old-school kind of 'thrash-y' vibe. Some of it calls to the old MEGADETH style, which is cool, and some of it is just plain HEAVY! Dave's [Mustaine] guitar is sounding mean and when I left yesterday, Chris was just fixin' to put in some leads."

U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine has uploaded a new podcast featuring an audio interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. Dave talks about the recording of MEGADETH's new album; the upcoming Priest Feast tour; the state of the metal scene; and other topics.

You can download the podcast as an MP3 audio file at this location. (Note: The Mustaine interview begins around the 24-minute mark.)

Mustaine recently told Revolver magazine that MEGADETH's upcoming CD will contain "stuff that's melodic like nobody's business, stuff that's heavier than hell, and stuff that's a combination of both." He said, "The way I write, I'll play a riff and tape it and save it. And if I don't use it now, I'll use it later. The very first song I ever wrote, 'Rust In Peace… Polaris', didn't appear on anything until the fourth MEGADETH record. Right now, there are about 20 songs that are in the making, and there's another good 25-to-30 hours worth of guitar riffs on tape. And I've also got a lot of old lyrics I've assembled over my career. Some of it's relevant to this day and age; some of it is stuff that, if I released it, would probably get me in a lot of trouble. Those songs deal with a lot of the anger that I felt when I was younger and reading things like [the 1971 underground manual for making homemade explosives] 'The Anarchist Cookbook'."

In a recent online posting, Mustaine stated about the band's new material, "I am more excited about this new record than I was with 'United Abominations' or anything in the last several years. . . I am not saying that this is 'Rust In Peace 2'! But I can say that the five out of nine songs I have arranged, I like and love them all, and every one of the songs has one or more of the strong points of me as a guitarist being showcased instead of me writing songs for radio — radio that won't play us anyway. . . This is really going to be a record that will make a lot of people that thought we couldn't do it anymore sit up and take notice."

I'm very excited for this record. I know it is going to be amazing.

And just cause the bassist says its "old school Thrashy" doesn't mean they are following Metallica. I'm pretty sure that the band started doing the more Thrashy stuff two albums ago. Did you hear "Kick The Chair" or "Blackmail The Universe"?

That's getting old. They are different bands today and you can't compare them any more.

I do agree with one comment to some extent... Someone mentioned that Dave is following Metallica. I don't think he's necessarily making a conscious effort to follow Metallica. I think it's actually simply where he gets his inspiration to excel. It's a competitive thing. I think Dave still feels like he has something to prove. He's obviously still bitter about his being fired from Metallica back in the early 80's and that's a whole other issue. But the fact is there is some underlying tension and animosity towards Metallica and that makes Dave thrive to out-do them, especially since Metallica's latest offering is a solid collection of metal tunes.

So, people on both sides of the fence should stop giving Dave a hard time because of his feelings toward Metallica and instead be happy and thankful that Metallica put out a decent album last year because we are probably going to get the best damned Megadeth record in years because of it.

Tension, animosity and emotion lead to good records, which is why Death Magnetic, although a good record in my opinion, seems to lack a little direction and feeling and feels very forced in some places because the band members are all happy and/or simply complacent.

Yeah every new album is going to sound like their older stuff, more thrashy, whatever.

I think it will be good. this is the first time they've had some real metal musicians in a long time. Think about it, Chris and Gar, as good as they were, were jazzers. Ellefson was... I don't know but it wasn't great. Behler and Young were essentially roadies. Menza, roadie. Friedman came from that whole Satriani/Vai era and didn't seem to ever be interested in metal. DeGrasso is one of those guys that will perpetually be the guy who comes in for that one last album before a career is finished its nose dive (Suicidal for life might be the exception). Pitrelli, seems like a bit of a powermetal guy and just came into the wrong place at the wrong time (haha, I was there the night they shoved him onstage cuz Marty said his cab couldn't find what is arguably the easiest to find venue in Vancouver next to GM Place). He didn't seem that into it. Glen Drover, once again, seems to have those power metal leanings, of which I'm weary. Once again he was good but didn't quite fit in terms of creating something truly aggressive.

Look at what they have now. LoMmenzo has been doing aggressive stuff for a while now (mainly BLS) and seems really into being in Megadeth. Shawn Drover also seems to really be enjoying Megadeth and definitely has the chops to do it otherwise he wouldn't be there. And lastly Broderick. I think this guy will make a huge difference. He will hopefully make up for the fact that they turned down Jeff Loomis for being too young (plus he's played with Loomis) as well as the fact that Jeff Waters has apparently turned down the position twice as well as Dimebag.

Plenty to be excited about. Plus its Mustaine, whenever its been up to him, he's put out good albums.

Kick the chair might have been thrash but it was the only good song on a crappy album. Since I fell for that one an bought the album, I'm never buying anything Megadeth releases again until I have heard the album 10 times and still like it...

Mmmm hmmm, and while mindless Megadeth fans keep praying before bed every night for Rust In Peace Pt. 2, I'll be happily ignoring the band and moving along to find bigger, better bands. Seriously, MD is washed up, and their pretentious asshole of a leader can't see past his own soapbox long enough to focus.
