MORBID ANGEL Guitarist Wants To Know: Is The Metal Scene Closed-Minded? - Feb. 5, 2009
Guitarist Trey Azagthoth (born George Emmanuel III) of Florida-based extreme metal legends MORBID ANGEL has posted the following message on his MySpace page:

"Is the metal scene closed-minded???? Well, is it????

"My purpose with this blog is that I have a desire to create some live performance concerts sometime in the future that include a set of MORBID ANGEL along with sets of the most extreme representitives of industrial, hardcore, terrorcore, jungle drum and bass etc DJs and groups. EXTREME MUSIC FOR EXTREME PEOPLE!!!! Right???

"Well, so it seems there are certain promoters and so-called 'authorities of the scene' who have some idea that such a gig won't work. Saying that metal people are narrow-minded and hate the various forms of hardcore DJ music for one reason or another. Is this true???

"People who know me know I am already a freaky freak artist and so then such an idea for crossing over such types of music is amazing. Exciting!!! As long as it's freakin' HARD-HITTING and SICK!!!!!!

"So... Why not, I ask.

"What is metal anyways???

"For me, 'metal' is for those who are bored with the constrictions and 'safe practices' of the mainsteam mentality, just like with any other socalled 'underground' scene or movement. Metal people wanna get mowed down by vicously sick melodies slamming over an arrangement of beats that twist the body and pull it in all directions. Freak them up. Metal, for me, is also about self-discovery. Not being sheep-like and playing 'follow the leader' but rather its about being free to express one's own ideas without the fear of ridicule. If there isn't any guts involved to challenge whatever is the current accepted patterns, then there isn't much in possibility for any new things to arise.

"What are metal lyrics even about if not about either breaking free from the dominion of some slavery-oppression, or the act of rejoicing in the pleasure of what people have passions about? Of course, there are also lyrics about fantasy and mindfuck as well too. !!!=RAWR=!!! ;)

"For me, it most certainly ISN'T about tribal-group mentality nor mainstream behavioral thinking. It's not about playing it safe either.

"What is the mentality of the mainstream??? Seems to me it's quite associated with sheepish behavoirs, placing value on 'fitting in and the approval of others' instead of the freedoms of self expression.

"What defines the term 'underground???' Isnt it when people place what they believe inside of themselves over what is supposedly supported in their exterior mainstream environment???

"What is the difference in fabricating a product and creating art????

"Where does 'trendy-ness' surface and what is it to be trendy?? Isn't it when people cannot find the source of certainties, direction and/or selfworth within themselves, especially as in those times when they are alone and not distracted, so therefore they need to base their certainties on how things reflect off of their external environment, including their peers?? Adjusting themselves to be considered favorable and to attract the approval of others outside of themselves???

"For some people in the world, the only thing 'real' is that which can be measured by the five mundane senses. For them, the inner workings are as some mysterious make believe which they sometimes play around with until any serious situation arises and then such things are placed back in the realm of 'make believe,' they, of course, fall back to earth and work from whichever foundation they find 'certainty' in, no??? Isn't this a formula based on the dependence of others, and if so, what does this have to do with the freedoms of such a thing as independence??? Where is the 'strength' in such a behavoir??? Is it just that maybe it's considered 'cool' and that's cool enough???

"OK, so the question is, do metal people only enjoy gigs with a metal-only billing??? Or do metal people also enjoy some crossover, as long as it's freakin' over-the-top EXTREME???? Does anyone even care??? Please chime in. I wanna hear from you."

Great guy, and extremely brilliant. Played online a couple of times with him (he's a videogame freak, did you know?), he's a really funny guy. That said, let's hope the "I" record is coming out this year.

As far as his question goes, consider this: generally, metal people cannot even stand OTHER METAL GENRES other than their favourite one (ever been to an open-air with both power metal and death metal acts? So you get the point). There are however some kind of genres whose fans are more open to experiments (industrial, some kind of black, extreme metal), while other genres have totally dedicated and purist fans (old school thrash is the perfect example nowadays). So the truth lies in the middle as always.

I like a bit of crossover. If Morbid were playing on some bill with a hardcore techno act then I might check out that act if I showed up early enough ... but I'd be there for Morbid.

Anthrax and Public Enemy did shows together in the 90s, and maybe so did Biohazard and Cypress Hill? That would have been good. But if the other genre band is unknown then I can see how promoters would find it risky...

an example of this is REAL RAP, like DR Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, good stuff, no little wayne crap soldier boy wannabe 'tards

to me, if you threw some scratching behind a crazy guitar solo with some blast beat going on, it could be interesting, it all depends how the genres are being blended.
a good drum n' bass groove done metal style with some sweet vocals could work

Metal can represent or appeal to many people that get together in shows because they like the same music but many people are different , as in everything, so it is fragmented

Metal fans can be : Hicks
Metal fans can be : Wannabe hicks as na image while being dorks
Metal fans can be: Extremely intelligent people , eloquent etc..
Metal fans can be: The ordinary Joes who simply likes the tunes
Metal fans can be: Nerds
Metal fans can be: The most narrow minded people
Metal fans can be : Racists
Metal fans can be : Anti-Racists
Metal fans can be : The most open minded and energetic people
Metal fans : Extreme people who enjoy extreme sports music and lifestyle in general
Metal fans can be : People impressed by the lifestyle and image and not so the music

people are different and similar in many ways

What Trey wants to do is ambitious and cool, much respect!

To me, I love Metal because I love the music. It is as simple as that.

The whole argument about thinking individually and not just accepting 'mainstream' stuff is a side issue. I know the people who like metal (I mean the ones who love it and aren't just latching onto an 'outcast' genre because they are depressed teens and have no real love of the music) tend to think more for themselves than the average joe in the street, but there are so many so called fans of metal who are sheep as well.

Most of my friends are not into metal and I don't choose friends based on whether or not they like Megadeth.

From a promotional look at it.. It is not that great. From a pure death metal fan p.o.v. it looks awful too, visa versa with the HC dance crowd. I wouldn't hold it against just the metal crowd either. People would have their fits on both sides if such a tour or event came about. I can listen to Atari Teenage Riot. I can listen to Slayer, but when something like the track No Remorse comes around, its pretty pretty cool. Hopefully Trey gets something going that combines his guitar with something in the electro dept.

but i do like extreme underground death metal more....since 1990......

i know that trey is really into the dutch hardcore/terror scene but combining extreme metal with hardcore/terror don t work.....and never will.....they are both extreme but totally different!!!

you have a genre so called SPEEDCORE..that is metal combining extreme house music....but that genre is still wat is was:nothing!!

there no SPEEDCORE party s anymore in Holland and in the past you had a few!!!

It could work if it was an industrial hardcore band like Atari Teenage Riot, not that they're together anymore but it would have to be something similar to that. Not sure if there are even bands attempting to make that kind of music anymore, but that's probably the only thing that could work. Otherwise you're gonna get a situation like Necro on the last Sounds of the Underground tour. The band will get booed offstage or wind up threatening all of the fans to a fight after the show.

MAYHEM -> DEATH -> TESTAMENT-> KISS-> SKINNY PUPPY->THE CURE-> NEIL YOUNG-> BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN ->MERLE HAGGARD->

Listen to everything but when does personal tastes become sheepishness. I don't know
I personally don't give a fuck what Trey Azagthoth likes but will usually check out anything my favoriate bands recommend. Not all of it will i like though.

I only began to like Morbid Angel late in life so time does things to the human ear as well. I liked Sacrifice, Testament, Slayer Celtic Frost in the '80's but when I heard Morbid Angel's Immortal Rites I almost kicked in the TV-Set. Now I love it.

I would imagine that Morbid Angel would stick to the formula that has made them legends for an album, it sounds like he's kind of feeling out the idea of touring with a more diverse package of artists from all extreme music categories. Stuff like Atari Teenage Riot, etc. I'd hope that people would be open to something like that, so many people complain that we don't get great festivals like Europe does, and that is part of the problem, people arent willing to check out different types of music. So I hope they go for it, book a tour with some crazy extreme techno and industrial type acts and hope that the Morbid Angel and death metal fans dig it! Go for it Trey!!

you have to do in life and if you're being true to yourself, people will at least respect you, even if they disagree with you. There's nothing wrong with trying to stage a show with a wide variety of styles. If people are interested in that spectrum, they'll attend, if not, they won't. He just has to realize that some people will be mad with his non-metal ways and call him "sell-out" or whatever, but like I said, you gotta be true to yourself in life, or you die as a tool and with regrets- better to at least live while you're here.

I think offering different music forms with instrumentation would be awesome. But it's gotta be mind-bending as well as brutal. Most extreme metalheads, as I know them, are actually quite articulate and intelligent, which is a driving force behind their love of this music.

A lot of the experimental stuff out there now is really intricate and compelling - almost to the point of confusion in some cases. Some of the African and Asian music that I've been exposing myself to could be easily transformed into extremely heavy guitar driven crushitude...

Keeping it original would be awesome. Heck, even having a few talented cover bands would be cool. DJ's, though, is where I personally draw a line.

Last week on TV, I saw an "artist" from NYC who lurks in the subway system creating his "art". With an Exacto knife and steady hand, he cuts out portions of advertising posters and then superimposes his cut outs onto other posters - thus creating a new poster that reflects his vision. Interesting? Sure, why not? Kindergarten kids do collages all the time. Art? More like vandalism and destruction of property.

With a pair of sharp scissors and a few minutes to spare, I can cut and paste scenes from the old masters' paintings. I'll take an eye from Van Gogh's self-portrait, a smile from the Mona Lisa, and a backdrop from Monet to create a masterpice, right? No.
Such it is with DJ's.

Sure, DJ's come up with some really cool sounds and intriguingly distorted forms of recorded music. But there's a sticking point: it's still merely a bastardization of someone else's art.

Keep it real, Trey. Real instruments, real music, no plagiarism or hacking.

We ARE open-minded, just not suckers.

Branching out and practicing your art is healthy and important, but fucking up Morbid Angel with what us "close minded" types abhor will just drop sales on the next record (or increase them?).

Am I the only one who notices the irony between Trey wanting to not be trendy, yet dipping into house music/ drum and bass for inspiration....some of the trendiest music out there?

...a little. But my main bitch is with mainstream music (ie: the shit that comes out of the radio or in a bar jukebox)

Why not? I've spent most of my life in northern and western prairie Canada, where the only acceptable music is:

1) Classic/"modern" Rock
2) Top 40 pop/hip hop/rock
3) Country

You gotta listne to this shit at work all fucking day if your co-workers are sheep, which is 100% of the time. You gotta put up with comments like 'How can you listen to that shit?" or "Isn't that devil-worship music?" over and over and over again. I have to go on the internet, or buy CD's just to listen to my music, while the average moron can just turn on the radio and listen to whatever crap is coming out of it.

Sure, I like a few songs from other genres, but I basically only like metal. I think we should be tolerant of other METAL genres but as intolerant of mainstream music as the rest of the world is with us and our music.

Metal rules. If anything else is coming from the radio, turn it off before I turn it off with my fuckin Little League Slugger.

I love the logic behind it, but unfortunately, people forget metalheads are still humans. The majority of them are just like everyone else, although with a different sense of taste... sheep. Notice the clothing patterns, the unoriginal music... so many other things. Anyway, I'm personally open to most anything, but that doesn't mean I like everything. I say do what you want if it's your artistic expression, but be prepared for some backlash.

...there is SO MUCH diversity in metal/extreme/heavy music compared to even 15 years ago...no other music combines elements from other genres (classical/jazz/folk, etc., etc.)like metal has/does...when was the last time you heard country w/growls or blastbeats...or pop w/ blazing, intricate guitarwork, or even pure folk bands adding some metal elements to the mix...REMEMBER...metal is where it all happens...not all of it is appealing, but you have to admit the diversity is pretty astounding, despite there being 9426 bands in existence...oh yeah...I do hope the new Morbid Angel slays...I'm a little worried, though, that David Vincent' vocals won't be on par with Covenant or earlier era...didn't care for the strained, hardcore-ish vox on a lot of Domination...give'em to be deep and sick!!!

I would go to see a bill of say, Morbid Angel and Pat Metheny followed by the New York Philharmonic playing Stravinsky with ZZ Top closing. I just don't like techno because listening to machines spit out endless repetition of cliches at one volume level in order to facilitate the consumption of Ecstasy and amyl nitrate just doesn't do it for me. It's bad enough I'm forced to listen to it at a restaurant, at the gym, or when I'm buying clothes.

much, if not most, of the scene is close-minded musically and in other ways.

good for him for trying but he should expect much criticism.

for those who are open minded check out these links and perhaps you will find new music that you can enjoy... or not

a flash animation guide with a timeline of electronic music: (i like jungle/drum&bass the most, although there are interesting things all over the place):

http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

heavy drum & bass/breakcore:

http://www.myspace.com/currentvalue
http://www.myspace.com/greyonednb
http://www.myspace.com/limewax
http://www.myspace.com/counterstrike
http://www.myspace.com/venetiansnares
http://www.myspace.com/teambongra
http://www.myspace.com/ladyscraper --> this last one i threw in for good measure, can't stand listening to it very long, very experimental

if you like this stuff, email me and i'll give you links to cool sites with free mp3s...

for the record, i listen to all forms of metal: thrash metal, death metal, metalcore, classic rock
but i still enjoy other styles of extreme music... who gives a fuck if the music comes from a computer, a person still had to make it.
there is a big difference between dj and music producers, the links above are music producers and djs.
what i'm trying to say is that a techno dj can beat-match two records, but he has no talent in producing music. on the other hand drum & bass djs make some very intricate stuff...
anyways... it's a question of choice, so listen to what your heart and your ears say!

This doesn't bode well for the new Morbid Angel CD! If you want to broaden your expressive horizons, be my guest, but keep it separate from Morbid Angel. We love you for your uncompromising integrity and fierceness, so please don't fuck it up!

It sounds like an interesting idea to make a show like this.

I wonder if the Morbid Angel tour in the US is going to be like this? hmm, let's wait and see. To think about it, it will attract people into Metal, which is great.

I have friends that will only listen to Heavy and Power and sometimes Folk(sucks), obivously for me I'm more into the extreme ala Thrash, Death, Black and others, . There are extreme music in other genres that is not Metal also, it's just that people don't explore other boundaries.

At the work place of course you get shoved to radio music, which plays the same crap over and over again. I rather just not have a radio near me.

Gimme a break dude.
You are a guitar player in a death metal band.
Stop trying to be "deep".................... now focus and get back to writing some riffs that some overweight singer can grunt over.

"Is The Metal Scene Closed-Minded?"
Sadly, Id say the answer to this question is easily seen in the comment section after nearly every story on this site. Its a resounding "yes". If its a band someone likes, you'll see the occassional comment, but more then likely they will be out-weighed by the naysayers and haters. Why people take the time to post negative comments on a band, I will never understand, perhaps it says more on the life they live, then the band they hate. Diversity and acceptance for everyone, for who they are, is what drew me to Metal in the first place, but the more forums I participate in the more I see its only diversity and acceptance for those that believe the same way they do. Step outside those lines and, in the case of this site and many others, its all name calling and childish behavior. People should remember, just because you have an opinion, does'nt mean people want, or need, to hear it.

I dont see what the problem is, I'm pretty fucking metal, and I listen to all kinds of shit, and I think a show like that would work as long as everything was intense. Shit, Lords of Acid were more intense than half the metal bands I've seen, and that's a lot of fucking bands..

I say go for it.

If Azagthoth wants to know if "the metal scene" is "closed-minded," he need only look at his white-supremacist lead singer.

Great idea, but I think that only very few would be able to understand the combination. However I do believe that Morbid Angel fans would show up to see Morbid Angel to play. If the rest of the package would be interesting and extreme, in the ways that metal people understand these words, it could be quite eye opening for some. For 10% of the crowd maybe?

One of the most heartfelt blogs I've ever read.

I actually grew up listening to anything from Atari Teenage Riot, Cypress Hill, CCR, The Beatles, pretty much anything.... so therefore its great to be open minded

Music is music as long as its done for the sake of art, and NOT for the sake of $$$$ or the sake of being "kvlt or tr00".

That being said, if he wants to make a hybrid industrial/digital hardcore/death metal side project, I'd happily pick up the album the first day it hits

If it ain't MAIDEN, it ain't METAL!! I guess I'm a bit closeminded. Oh well, I'm exaggerating a bit. In reality, I'm pretty open-minded, as I do make an exception for early HELLOWEEN (pre-Deris) and GAMMA RAY.

no one wants to go to a techno dance DJ thing if theres no girls... its going to be too full of metalheads who wont want to dance (especially in a sea of dudes) you just dont see too many girls at death metal shows its sad but its true. i know i'd go in a second to see morbid angel and i'd stick around for everything else but there's going to be 10 men for every man there who knows i might be wrong i do live in North Carolina after all.
