EDDIE VAN HALEN On Son WOLFGANG: 'He Is a Part of VAN HALEN. Permanently.' - Feb. 9, 2009
Eddie Van Halen has told RollingStone.com that his son Wolfgang Van Halen, 17 — who spent the last year on the road with his dad's band VAN HALEN, playing bass — is a "permanent" member of the group.

"Wolfie had it the toughest on tour: he had three or four hours of [tutoring] every day, and then the gig," Eddie Van Halen told RollingStone.com. "I yanked him out of school for 11th grade, which is actually the most important year, because that's what they go by for college. And the school said, 'We're not going to let him back in, if you pull him out, because we've never done that before.' Well, first time for everything, dude, you know? They did let him back for 12th grade, because he wanted to graduate with his buddies."

Eddie Van Halen said he's writing new songs for the next time VAN HALEN take the road. "I've got tons of music written, such a variety of stuff," Eddie told RollingStone.com. "The essence of me is obviously there, and those drums, they're always recognizable. But people expect a certain thing from VAN HALEN, and this isnt exactly bang-your-head-against-the-wall stuff.

As a lifelong fan of VH, I am really getting sick of Ed. Actually, that's been the case for quite some time now. The drama, the addictions, the "I'm clean BS" BS, etc. It is just getting old. No shit they let him back in to school....you could buy out the entire District in a heartbeat, Eddie. Besides, if Wolfie really did get 3-4 hours of tutoring and school work each day, he most likely is even more advanced than he would have been sitting there.

Bwaaahahahahaha...how long has he been spouting that nonsense? Another Van Halen 3 perhaps? Oh wait, it's VH 4, but maybe by then it'll be VH5. Who actually gives a crap?

He yanked Wolfie out of school and deprived thousands of fans the opportunity to see the real VH.

Nothing against Wolfie because he is stuck in the middle, just like Mike.

What a sad loser, this Van Halen character

I didn't see the last tour, but I saw the one before with Sammy and Michael when they came to Vancouver.

Mike did a fucking sweet bass solo, I thought it was guitar! Then he took out a bottle of Jack and started chugging it!

BRING HIM BACK!

Too bad. It's sad to see a once magnificent band, just slowly spiral away down the toilet.

Eddie Van Halen is a gigantic asshole, but he's still got incredible talent...and it runs in the family. It's a shame about Michael Anthony, but Wolfgang is an awesome bassist in his own right

My tickets for the VH reunion tour were, unfortunatley, right in front of Wolfgang. I have never seen a more uninteresting, unengaged musician on stage in my life. It was bad enough that both he and his dad were lip-syncing the background vocals (I heard them at soundcheck and they were absolutely playing MA's backing vocals through the speakers.) Even worse, Wolfie just looks down at the stage or meanders around with a blank look on his face - he doesn't connect to the audience and he knows it. PLEASE move on Wolfie and let the REAL VH bassist play...it's not Van Halen without Michael Anthony. Eddie knows this but he's too screwed up and selfish to right his wrong.

Wolfgang should form a band with Lauren Harris and call in Nepotism.

Sorry Michael Anthony is Van Halen. Wolfgang is not. When the original line-up was possible and you did not do it, you robbed the fans, plain and simple.

Hey, that's so cool that you yank your kid out of school during the most important year of it. Why they hell is he proud of that?? Nothing against his kid, but it seems silly to just give him this job permanently at his age. But sound decision-making and clear judgement via Eddie Van Halen isn't something that happens too often.

Hey Son, I'm yanking you out of school for a year!

Gonna mess with your education so Daddy can get back at a former bandmate.

VH is willing to tolerate DLR (most likely for the $$$ he brings) but not Michael Anthony. It's pathetic.

I am a bass player and singer. I have a son. He wants to play drums. Some day I hope we can play music together...on a Sunday afternoon in the garage, but not in my band. He will form his own band and play with kids his own age. I just don't understand Ed at all. But then again, I will never understand smoking after surviving cancer, drinking problems, replacing founding members of the band with teenagers, or any of Ed's other self inflicted struggles. I was asked at work today if I preferred the Sam or Dave era VH. I replied I loved them both and own all of the music, but sadly, I never listen to it anymore because this band has just become a drama queen. It's so dysfunctional that I have just moved on. What has become of this once, make that twice, great band is just a shame! I'm just looking forward to Chickenfoot. Like it or not, Sam and Mike are the class of VH. Heck, Dave almost looks classy next to Ed and Al.

Saw the tour with Roth. Wolfie isn't that bad of a bass player for his age. But as we all know, he ain't no Michael Anthony. No one can be like him. Hope we get to hear some new music someday that Ed is wroking and writing on.

Just an FYI... Wolf did not play one note live during the whole tour. Some were bass backing tracks, but most where played by someone else off stage.

At times the band uses full band backing tracks, there is video proof of that. That's ofn though...

Don't slam the guy for yanking the kid out. Unless you have connections school does not do you much good for the most part. This kid had the coolest experience of a lifetime and made more money in that year than most of us earn in forty.

Think back to your junior year of high school. would you trade it for a year of touring with Van Halen? The kid aint gonna ever hafta work a day in his life cuz of his dad. What did your dad ever do for you? Eddie played bass on the albums. Michael Anthony was just a place holder. Might as well have your kid being that place holder so you can spend your time with him and show him the most incredible experience of his life. Touring with VH builds character that snot noses in 11th grade will never experience. And it was like the highest grossing tour of the year for those of you with the "spiralling downward" perspective. you would give your son the opportunity if you could. but you cant. and you never will be able to. and you would jump at the chance if your dad offered it. but he never will. and can't because he is a plumber.
