GUNS N' ROSES: 'Chinese Democracy' Certified Platinum In U.S.
- Feb. 9, 2009
|
|
GUNS N' ROSES' new album, "Chinese Democracy", was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA) on February 3, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of one million copies. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the CD has shifted 537,000 units since it was released on November 23, 2008 as a Best Buy exclusive after a wait of more than 15 years. As previously reported, GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose broke his silence again, this time via an email interview with Billboard.com published on Friday (February 6). In the chat, Rose launched into tirades against his record label, his former bandmates in GUNS and the rumors that have swirled around him during the decade and a half it took to complete and finally release the latest GUNS album, "Chinese Democracy", this past November. The record's less-than-spectacular sales as a Best Buy exclusive have led industry analysts to ask whether the label was to blame or Rose himself for not doing any promotion or touring. On his label, Interscope Records, Rose says bluntly that the band members "hate the record company," adding, "At least in regard to the U.S., for the most part I don't look at it like we have a record company — I look at it for the most part like we have friendly but otherwise cutthroat loan sharks, and we were lucky to get what we got but feel we could have done more if they were at least, especially with some of their backgrounds, a bit more involved creatively. So . . . I have no sympathy for the record companies, based on our experiences in the U.S." He does, however, praise the international operation. Rose claims that Interscope never submitted a marketing plan to him for the record, saying, "We feel that, unfortunately, we've never been really anything all that much more other than a 'throw it at the wall, see if it sticks, no real ground work, something to take advantage of, last quarter, cook the books, write-off, fuck this headache, hoping to get lucky 'scam." The singer also shot down rumors that there are two more collections of material waiting in the wings, saying, "We'd like to get another album out at some point, but for now, our focus is on 'Chinese'." He also said the band is working on a video for the single "Better" but has no plans to tour. Regarding the inevitable question of whether he would ever reunite with the original members of GUNS N' ROSES, Rose writes, "I could see doing a song or so on the side with Izzy ( Stradlin, guitarist) or having him out (on tour) again," adding that he could possibly envision playing with bassist Duff McKagan as well. But when it comes to lead guitarist Slash, Rose's animosity shines through. He writes, "What's clear is that one of the two of us will die before a reunion and, however sad, ugly or unfortunate anyone views it, it is how it is." Although Rose squarely blames Slash for the unspecified issues between them, Slash told The Pulse of Radio a while back why he would be open to a reunion. "It would be worth doing for the fans," he said. "The fans would be the greatest thing about it because I think they really deserve it — I think they got the short end of the stick on the whole thing. But the hurdles that one would have to jump in order to make that happen are insurmountable, as far as I can say right at this moment. But I can't speak, you know, for the future to the point of going, 'It'll never happen,' 'cause I think I would sound sort of ignorant." Aside from the Billboard interview and answering a number of fan questions at a GUNS N' ROSES message board, Axl Rose has done no promotion of any kind for "Chinese Democracy". Slash, McKagan, Stradlin and representatives for Interscope Records have yet to comment on Rose's statements.

I was just at Best Buy and they had this huge Chinese Democracy display as soon as you walk in. It's been there since the album came out. Not only is that display completely full, but the shelves on the regular cd aisle and the ones at the checkout.
It's been this way for months.

I guess I will eat a little crow, platinum is getting there, not as dismal sales wise after all. I thought it would top off just around Platinum, its there in 3 months. A hit rock single & could go double platinum. Though Best Buy still needs plenty more to break even.

The article mentions its platinum because its shipped a million albums, but its only sold 537,000?
Always makes me wonder how off the album sales are since the 90's when they changed how they counted album sales. Maybe pearl jam still has the most albums sold in a week award, since everything after is fudged due to the albums shipped, not albums sold crap. Which means if you want the album to chart, you have to figure out how many to ship as possible.
Seems Chinese Democrocy is Platinum only because of the way they calculate it.

Why all the worry? Enjoy the work, look forward to the video, and eventually a tour. You may not get it on your terms, but you'll get it none-the-less. For me, this thing was well worth the wait.

The only reason this bomb is platinum is because Best Buy bought 1.5 million copies up front, which is why it has now shipped over 1 million. In terms of sales it's only GOLD, and a major dissapointment. So in other words, it was guaranteed to go platinum because of Best Buy's stupidity.

Inexplicaple and misleading if you ask me. From what I have learned, the record stores at some point can be compensated for cd's that aren't selling. Whether or not that means physically returning the cd's or not I am not sure. But the award still stands. I also don't know why it's so difficult to asertain actual sales of a bands history. The information is borderline cryptic. Also, with soundscan only being in existence since 91, the only true sales stats of an artist that I have seen have been able to find are "post soundscan era". I find the industry very interesting and would love to find a web-site that could shed some light on who has sold what and in what time frame. Metal Sludge used have some figures but I don't think that they still research cd sales. Pretty lame site anyway IMHP.

Here is a quick lesson in albums sales. The record label sells the album to various distributors who then sell it to stores wholesale who then resell it to you with a slight markup to make profit. Album sales are counted by the number of albums shipped because technically they are "sold" to the stores to resell. This is how it works and this is how they can tell in like 2 or 3 days if a band will be #1 on the chart and guess how many they will sell. I don't think they really pay too much attention to how many units the stores sell to you the consumer.

Well, I guess is HAS been *two* months. Not so shabby in my book. Album just came out on November 23rd. That's on 78 days ago. I can think of a million bands that would love to sell/ship a million albums who will never come close.
Velvet Revolver's 'Libertad' - 300,000 units in 18 months
Axl's new GnR 'Chi-Dem' - 1,000,000 units in 2 months
Suck it, haters. Axl wins.

i thought i'd never say this, after pretty much bashing the album previously. i got chinese democracy as a late christmas gift, the very same day my girlfriend left me. i started listening to the album, and it grew on me quickly. this isn't slash and duff's guns, but it's still the main man himself, axl". this isn't the first tiime new people have been in the band, and i'm sure it won't be the last. just because slash plays on something, doesn't make it great. it's the combination of axl, duff, and the others. take velvet revolver for instance...NOTHING GREAT. this album came in handy, and the lyrics really got to me. the music is awesome. my only real complaint is that the album doesn't rock enough. too many ballads, but hey relisten to old guns. they did alot of fucking ballads back then to. but also, it's very new to me. the sound..the feel. it's not your everyday album. i'm getting burnt out on hearing the same old shit all the time. all the fucking rock bands today or even metal bands sound more and more alike. this album is clearly different. i've watched alot of videos on youtube about gnr. axl is a really smart guy, and very creative and talented. watch the making of november rain videos, where he talks about arranging the song and stuff. he arranged chinese democracy, played on some of the songs. it's a much better abum than velvet. JUST MY OPINION!!

This is total BS.
It just hit gold. 500,000 sold is gold. 1,000,000 sold is platinum.
It doesn't matter how many were shipped. If that is the case, AC/DC's last album is like 5 times platinum, as is Death Magnetic. But they are not because it doesn't go by how many ship, but they have sold over a million. G'n'R hasn't even come close to that.
They are just gold. Get over yourselves trying to change the rules.

All I'm saying is that they might as well ship 10 million while they're at it. Noone is buying this cd. If best buy committed to 1.5 million units, than they're guaranteed to ship that many. It just seems like a false number.
I have a feeling Best Buy will have a ton of these cd's on their shelves for years to come.

NEWSFLASH --
This is the way they've always done it.
What... did you think that in the past, the RIAA would call every single record retailer in America each week to get a rundown on every single album they sold from each individual artist?!?
Duh... Sorry, kids. No conspiracy here. Just business as usual. Which means that GnR's platinum status is just as legitimate as any other bands.
Blabbermouth is too stupid. I need to start visiting a sight with smarter posters...

NewsFlash, its not the way it works all the time. With Best Buy contracted for 1.5 mil, it might as well have 1.5 mil in sales, but this is the way it works for a band that the speculation is high sales. you think Appetite for Destruction shipped platinum. I think not. There were probably more & more demands to keep shipping after it took off. Those sales figures would have been legit. This is not. Commerically a flop. Creatively, that's up to the listener. The GnR name was not enough to propel this CD to mega sales. people know the score, its Axl solo, and I think the music isn't doing much talking either.

I'm no fan of Axl Rose's ego, his destruction of a great band, his infamous concert debacles, or his appropriation of a band name for his solo project. However, I listened to Chi-Dem again yesterday and think that it is actually quite good. I can't listen to it in the original track order, though, and I usually skip several songs entirely. The original order makes it sound like a complete mess, and I enjoy it far more by stacking all the rockers up front. In any event, nobody on this site should be hoping for a rock album's failure. Even Axl's harshest critics should concede that the album is way, way better than almost anything else on the charts over the last few years, including Velvet Revolver.

1. Rock 'n Roll Jesus didn't move serious units until almost a year after release, a ton of touring, and crossover airplay on pop and country stations. Chinese has shipped almost 5 times the units as Kid Rock by this point, and this is without a tour, a video or getting popped for beating up the ex-boyfriend of a stripper.
2. Interscope has already sold more than million units to Best Buy without spending a ton on marketing. No tour, no video, no website with 30 second snippets of chickens shitting in the studio while Buckethead solos. Think of how much money was spent on the marketing machines for Metallica and AC/DC. Everyone knew it was coming. Singles were released to itunes for Metallica, both had videos, and both started touring right away! It may be hard for many of you to imagine, but most people don't care enough about this shit to read Blabbermouth or Rolling Stone, or any other site or mag about music. Unless they turn on VH1 or the radio and hear the song, they're not going to buy it. If it's an older band like AC/DC, they may even still go to the show, but they won't buy it unless they hear it first. Chinese Democracy's poor sales have nothing to do with the quality of the music. It is soly due to the fact that most of America has no clue that it's even out.

you have some good points. And yes, if there were a hit to take this album to another level, that could happen like it did for Kid Rock. But what are the chances of that? And Geffen probably isn't going to promote more on what they probably proceive a sinking ship. THey already dumped tons into the making of the album...I agree, the sales doesn't necessarily have to do with the quality of the music, but I wouldn't dismiss that notion either. Of course that is opinion. But the opinion of more GnR fans is that they will take a pass on this CD....no one knows about the CD, & many that do, don't care. they know its not GnR, but a solo effort. Don't take my word, ask your average rock fan that like GnR previously, they have heard the CD's out, but most say "no interest"...you're right about AC/DC, its not about the new music really, though their latest has sold big....bottom line, everyone involved in this CD hope & banked on this being a pretty big seller. its not as of yet, & that doesn't seem to be changing with Axl in seclusion. He's a hermit.

They actually were paid for the full 1.3 million albums up front from Best Buy. That in fact covered the 10-15 million the album cost. The label recouped all the dough they fronted Axl in that one transaction...now all other albums sold (like the other 2 million worldwide) are profit...

There's lots of bad blood & its over $$. even do that Math on that. They aren't charging Best Buy $12-15 a copy, nor does Geffen pocket ever cent of that.

I thought Best Buy bought 1.6 million off the bat. Wouldn't that have been platinum first day out for shipment?
I'm not trying to get Axl's Gun n' Rose extra recognition (name butchering intentional, irony fans), because I could care less. But if we're going by RIAA rules... it was a platinum hit right outta the box. That would apply to Black Ice by AC/DC as well, since Walmart was on the hook for, what, 2.5 million? Granted, the latter actually SOLD...
I wonder how these "exclusive" deals work with Best Buy, WalMart, and the lot with the RIAA.
