DISTURBED Singer Says GRAMMYS Need More Rock
- Feb. 10, 2009
|
|
|
The Pulse of Radio reports: DISTURBED frontman David Draiman attended his first Grammy ceremony on Sunday night (February 8), where his band was nominated for "Best Hard Rock Performance." Even though Draiman told The Pulse of Radio that he was looking forward to going, it seems like his overall impression was less than enthusiastic after the show. Draiman told RollingStone.com, "I don't think they give rock its fair share by any stretch of the imagination, and the truth is that they're really neglecting a big part of the Grammy constituents. The majority of the country states that are red, they're either fans of country or fans of rock so there certainly needs to be better representation for our genre. We'll continue to fight the good fight."
DISTURBED was nominated for its song "Inside The Fire", but lost — along with ROB ZOMBIE, MÖTLEY CRÜE and JUDAS PRIEST — to eccentric progressive rockers THE MARS VOLTA.
METALLICA won the "Best Metal Performance" award for the track "My Apocalypse".
DISTURBED picks up right where it left off before the Grammys, playing on Tuesday night (February 10) in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Draiman is correct. The Grammys are shunning rock...and for what?
So called "vocalists" like Kanye West and Miley Cyrus???? Kanye couldn't carry a tune in his pocket and did you watch as Taylor Swift sang well while playing guitar while Miley Cyrus belted 80% of the song out of key?
I'm by no means a Taylor Swift fan, but she at least has the talent to back herself up.
I for one would like to see bands like Static-X, Sevendust and Lamb of God get some recognition. Bands like these will eat those typical "grammy" bands for breakfast.
Fuck the Grammys. Bring on the "METALHEAD'S CHOICE AWARDS".

...reality is, "popular" bands would win, not the ones diehard fans want to see. I mean, Metallica won a Grammy for "My apocolypse." Huh? There was 100 more songs in metal last year that was way better, probably even a 1000 more, but the Grammy's grabbed name recognition and try to legitimize it. It's an insult to diehard fans of metal.
Heck, the fact that genres like metal don't even get to perform at the night's show is a slap in the face (other genres not allowed to perform can claim this too).
Let's all just agree to wash our hands of any award show and let our support of bands who tour and record be enough.

Anyone who thinks the Grammys mean anything or have any credence whatsoever, probably get their musical information from Rolling Stone and Entertainment Tonight.
Mainstream media have no business going anywhere near Metal. Stay the fuck away and keep your mallrat 8-Grade girls happy with your Top 40 bullshit.

While its arguable this rant was brought on because Disturbed didn't win anything, he does raise a good point. Why aren't there as many categories for rock/metal as there are for pop, rap, country, r&b. Sometimes they don't even broadcast the rock/metal categories. I honestly think that rock and metal should be separated. Get categories like Best Metal Album of the year.
And I do feel that the Grammys are biased towards name & recognition. I mean I'm glad Metallica won, I liked Death Magnetic. But how the fuck did they win best metal song for St.Anger a few years back. I mean if you think about it the Grammys really is just a fad, considering it claims to be honoring musical brilliance, yet its funny how the majority of all the winners are mainstream artists.
Ahh well at least we've got the Metal Hammer Awards

Bash him all you want, but he has a point. We all know they hold no real meaning. The people who select songs and vote do not have any idea what they are doing. Inside the Fire was a good choice for "Best Hard Rock Performance" since well, Disturbed is hard rock, and the single I believe was at #1 in the metal charts for 17 weeks?
Mars Volta isn't even Hard Rock.
For Rob Zombie they picked Lords of Salem. Why? There were much better tracks off his last album.
If we want Hard Rock/Metal bands to get the shit they deserve, they should just have their own award ceremony that isn't controlled by the same main stream media acceptable pussies.

The Grammys have no love for rock?
Then someone please kindly explain why U2, Coldplay, Kid Rock, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Dave Grohl, BB King, Albert Collins and John Mayer all performed? Also add Blink 182 (it really is cool to see Travis Barker up and walking around) and Green Day to the list of presenters. Rock got WAY more love than any other genre. Sorry, but extreme music of ANY FLAVOR does not get shown. As for Metallica not getting to perform? Every song on Death Magnetic is 8 minutes long! There just isn't time on a three hour show to cater to everyone, so they have to stick to the middle of the road.

Grammys suck and always will! They do need to change there voting system though. anyone on the grammy voting board gets to vote for all categories, witch is useless. if your on the voting board because your a classical music editor, you most likely have no clue who to vote for best alt album, so you just check off any household names you recognize. I think thats why Matallica and a lot of other well know names win a lot of awards. just because there a household name.

even if there were legitimate nominees and catergories, we would all still complain about who won.
but still, Coldplay for 'rock album of the year?'
it just shows that the people in charge of that have no idea what real music is. that's why they felt like adding 3 guest stars to perform with a legend like Al Green or the Jonas douches with Stevie Wonder. it's all done out of fear. fear that the ignorant masses won't like it since the hot stars of the moment aren't all over everything, when in fact, people would probably enjoy REAL talented musicians, not just celeb-musicians

Disturbed are talentless crap who make rehashed crap for your average white-trash hillbilly who doesn't know a thing neither rock nor metal. Disturbed and the rest of the nu-metal phonies are just jealous that their fad has been left behind and forgotten. The only people who listen to them anymore are the ones who stopped listening to new music after they left high-school.
The Mars Volta on the other hand are a groovy, catchy band, who somehow manage to be stimulating to the ear without coming off as total tools. Sure, you can't headbang to them, you can't take off your shirt and slamdance like a fucking idiot, but that doesn't mean that they're not hard rock. Congratulations to them on that Grammy, as pointless as it is. They deserve it.
And Disturbed can go back to Israel and play with their dreidles.

saying the Grammy awards need more rock is like saying the United States Government needs more Republicans and Democrats.
Better idea: jump off a sinking ship, rather than drown. You have to look at most of the performers on the Grammy awards as entertainers, rather than musicians. I'm sorry, Kid Rock is not a musician. He's an entertainer. And, IMO, a pretty lousy one at that.

its a farce just like the rock n roll hall of fame, as for the hall how the fuck is priest , maiden , motley, and the list goes on n on alice cooper, not in the hall, its a fucking joke, the people that think they know what thyr talking about totally disregard types of music, good for metallica getting in, but had they kept putting out albums like justice n b4 that, thydve never gotten in, thyr fuckin mainstream ,,
sad i knpo, n yes im venting but any1 from new york could tell u that there is NO rock radio in new york n at times its ridicuklous 2 even find out if a good band is coming around to play,

They need more rock big time. Reality is you have to genres of music that people support through out there lifetime, rock and country. Those two is what people come out and see and listen too through out there life. I don't see any 50 years olds cruising around listening to NWA. But there is hell of alot of them cruising around listening to ACDC, Led Zep, Rolling Stones, etc.. Rap, R&B, and Pop are nothing more then the flavor of the day by the people that really don't care about music to begin with. What is cool to them today sucks 8 years from now (ie: Backstreet Boys).

Who listen to album oriented rock and contempary adult rock...I am sure those who are selected to vote on the grammys write for places such as blender, rolling stone.
And while I may not appreicated the artist featured on the grammys, some one does, and I give them respect, for them honoring there own, where as as a metal fan, all I have to look forward to is seeing every World class metal artist slandered non-stop over at places such as here, seeing more sub-divsions between legandary artist fanbase, and more self-destruction from with in, it is no wonder most metal artist sellout, after say 3, 4 or 5 albums.
Even if metal had its version of the grammys, it would be a watered down type of event, for the same reasons of the grammys. It is impossible to given a so-called "objective" rating system on recording artist, when music is a totally subjective experience in the first place.
The genre is 39 years old, and people still can not tell the difference between what is false metal (hard rock being passed off as metal), and between what they do not like. There are tons of legendary metal artist, who's music, I do not appreciate, I just say I don't like those artist for reasons of asthetics, or a lack of certain asthetics, why others would wrongly just claim they are false metal.

They swear and are cut off when they do. So why can't Metallica or even Judas Priest perform? What a waste of time to watch the Grammies. And how many times do they show Paul McCartney? I agree...we that love metal....deserve to be recognized and the grammys aren't giving the artists their representation. What is and isn't metal is splitting hairs...because everybody likes and dislikes different bands. What I saw on the grammys wasn't even classified as music in my book. One hit wonders...with the exception of Plant/Krauss....they are singing the music that made all the music possible so congrats to them. Screw the grammys...
