ANDREAS KISSER: For A Band Like SEPULTURA, Record Sales Don't Really Matter - Feb. 11, 2009
During an appearance on the "Jitball" sports radio show this past Friday (February 6) on Bulgaria's Tangra Mega Rock, SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser was asked about the reports that the first-week sales of the band's latest album, "A-Lex", were very low. "You know, for a band like us with some 25 years of history, it doesn't really matter if we sell a lot or not," Andreas replied. "It is something that happens to every band, especially in time when we have a transition of technology. When SEPULTURA started, we had only fax machines. And then you have cell phones and the Internet and downloading and stuff. And the sales went down a bit. But that's happening to everyone. And people see only that Max [Cavalera; former SEPULTURA frontman] is out or Igor's [Cavalera; former SEPULTURA drummer] out. People have to look at this with an open mind. This is music, not gossip. We are not slaves of our name. We recreate SEPULTURA every day. It's in the present. We're not slaves of our past. We respect it, we play everything, but 'A-Lex' is receiving a very good response. We have been doing well in the charts in Europe. In Brazil, it has sold more than 5,000 copies in less than a week. You know, in America — I just received an e-mail saying we're in the Billboard chart at number 80 or 60, something like that. And this hadn't happened since 'Roots', you know. So it is something good, something positive. But you always will have people talking shit about it. That's part of SEPULTURA life. Since day one, even before I joined. The band was founded in Belo Horizonte, which is a very religious city in Brazil. Since then we hear shit. Always! Every day!"

Read a transcript of the entire interview from Tangra Mega Rock.

"A-Lex" — the group's first LP to be recorded without either of the founding Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor; on guitar/vocals and drums, respectively) — sold around 1,600 copies during its first week of release in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

SEPULTURA's first-week sales totals for the last five studio albums:

* "A-Lex" (2009): 1,600
* "Dante XXI" (2006): 2,300
* "Roorback" (2003): 4,000
* "Nation" (2001): 10,000
* "Against" (1998): 18,000

SEPULTURA's previous CD, "Dante XXI", has sold 19,000 copies in the United States since its March 2006 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"A-Lex" (which stands for "no law" or "without law") is available in three versions: in a deluxe digipak with an embossed cover, in a regular jewel case and on a vinyl gatefold LP.

On "A-Lex", SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser and his three colleagues, Derrick Green (vocals), Paulo Jr. (bass) and new addition Jean Dollabella (drums), have dedicated themselves to Anthony Burgess's book "A Clockwork Orange", creating an awesome thrash metal opus around this timeless and exciting subject.

The material was produced by SEPULTURA and Stanley Soares at the Trama Studios in Sao Paulo and mastered by George Marino at New York's Sterling Sound studios. "A-Lex" is the first SEPULTURA album to feature new drummer Jean Dolabella, who joined the fold during the "Dante XXI" tour.

SEPULTURA filmed a video for the song "We've Lost You" on December 15, 2008 in São Paulo, Brazil. Check out photos from the video shoot at this location.

New album is cool, but the reality of it all is that there is no Igor and no Max, if the band were all original members I guarantee higher record sales , but it is what it is and that train has left a long time ago

There's very little on their last two releases to justify this bands continued existence.

no disrespect for Metallica, quite the opposite! but had this release had a metallica logo it would have made gold status. I really do get disappointed way too often with the music scene. It is NOT about the music :( but rather, PR. People should stop saying I'm into music they should say I'm into PR.

These Sepultura guys seem to have a lot of dignity and are proving to be the real deal.

I'm going to go onto amazon.com right now and buy this album just to help out. I haven't picked up anything by Sepultura since "Nation", but I really liked a song that I heard yesterday on the metal channel off of "A-Lex" (can't remember the song title)-- so, don't be sad Andreas, I'll pick up a copy just for you! --- you friend, Q.

...let's say the five bands, that saw me grow in metal, I got every album they put out, even the DVDs, singles, bootlegs etc, and I supported them even stronger without Max, but the last album didn't excitate me that much...
I mean, I got "Dante XXI" and like "Nation" it's un great record, to me, the best since "Chaos A.D.", and I didn't listen to the last one in it's entierty (so who am I to talk about it?) but the two songs that went on their myspace didn't make me feel any emotion.
It's the first Sepultura record that I don't buy in it's release week. I'll sure purchase it but, I'm less enthousiastic.
But I trully love this band and really hope the music will show me I was wrong.

A-LEX didn't even make the Billboard 200. The last Sepultura record that did manage it was Nation, which was also their last record for Roadrunner.

Records sales, charts....dammit: THIS IS METAL, not commercial pop crap. SInce when is it important to chart and get massive sales on the first week?

This whole selling thing is exagerated by the labels and the tabloids/journalists who want to make us think its important to sell if you want people to think you're good. Most good music sells like shit these days...

It will matter when SPV dropps their asses for not selling. I doubt the members of "Sepultura" will pay to record, manufacture, release, promote & market their next album themselves. Labels need to make their money back and then some in order for it to be worth their while.

It's a shame that this cd is not getting the love it deserves. I had my reservations about a Sepultura cd without Igor and Max but I bought it anyway. Turned out to be a really good purchase. Shows that this band can survive without those two. Hopefully as the year goes on, more people pick up on it. The Cavalera Brothers are a part of the Septultura legacy but they still know how to rock without those guys. Recommended purchase.

just change the bands name already......it isnt sepultura with not one cavalera brother in the band...unfortunately if they changed their name they would probably sell like 600 copies instead of 1600

QUESTION:

From what I heard, a lot of the influences in A-Lex comes from the old days of Sepultura. Am I the only one who even noticed? Ya know, fast parts like on ARISE and the older albums? A-Lex is certainly NON-commercial.

is a fantastic album period! I my only complaint is that they did SO GOOD of a job making the album feel like an overall concept that there are too few songs that work as singles. the SONGS ARE GREAT, even the A-Lex Intros rock the opener of the album could be on a slayer album... then breaks into moloko!

AWESOME \m/

I'm getting tired of Max & Igor Cavalera's lack of innovation. Every Soulfly albums sound the same and Max's voice is getting tired. This album has everything a real Sepultura fan could ask for and the new band lineup kicks ass. Green's vocals are amazing on the whole album, the songs are tight and there's a hook in every single song wich is hard for a metal album. Andreas Kisser's guitars are simply stunning and the drumming is ferocious.

If you love metal, stop being so STUBBORN. One listen to A-Lex and I promise you you will be hooked to it.

Why does Blabbermouth seem to be singling out Sepultura for humiliation about their album sales? I hope this doesn't have anything to do with old loyalties given the history between Sepultura and the forces behind Blabbermouth.

Sales for nearly every band (not all) in every genre are in the crapper - look at overall music sales for the last ten years. To single out Sepultura based on first week sales is disgraceful. Why not compare total album sales for each release? Total band album sales? Unless you are U2, Metallica, or Bon Jovi, nearly every band with a history as long as 25 years doesn't sell crap for albums.

Whether you like Sepultura or not, this continual mocking of Sepultura is not right to do to a band that has been so influential and long-running. I don't listen to Sepultura much anymore, but I still hold them in very high regard.
