It's Official: No OZZFEST This Year
- Feb. 12, 2009
|
|
Ozzy Osbourne is currently in the studio in Los Angeles co-producing his tenth studio album with Kevin Churko. The new CD is the rock and roll legend's follow-up to 2007's "Black Rain" which debuted in the Top Ten on the album charts in 11 countries and spawned Ozzy's first-ever #1 Active Rock track "I Don't Wanna Stop" (which also sat atop the Heritage Rock chart for more than 20 weeks). The two-time Grammy Award winner has decided that he will not be touring until he has a new album in stores (currently projected to be Thanksgiving 2009). Thus, Ozzy has decided to put his namesake festival Ozzfest on hold this year. When MTV News caught up with the Osbournes at the Scream Awards in Los Angeles on October 18, 2008, they discussed their plans for Ozzfest's 14th year. Asked if 2009's festival would be free once again like it was in 2007, Ozzfest co-producer Sharon Osbourne replied, "No, don't you know that there's a depression on? Are you mad? We're going back to what we originally were. We've given the real good fans a free show for one time, and now, it's back to business as usual." Video footage of the Osbournes talking to MTV News about Ozzfest can be viewed below. The one-day Ozzfest 2008 festival, with METALLICA and OZZY OSBOURNE as headliners, was among the highest-grossing concert standa in the world last year, according to Billboard magazine. The AEG Live-promoted Ozzfest 2008 grossed nearly $3.5 million and almost 30,000 fans got to experience a 13-hour show filled with legends, cutting-edge acts and Ozzfest alumni who ignited three stages at Pizza Hut Park in the hard music-loving state of Texas, including one devoted to the state's bands. The official Ozzfest web site was updated with a photo gallery from last year's event, which was held on August 9 in Frisco, Texas. Check it out at this location. A three-minute preview of "Osbournes: Reloaded", a new Fox variety series starring Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon, and their children Jack and Kelly, can be viewed below. Among the highlights shown are a blindfolded contestant fooled into making out with a grandmother, Ozzy serving at a fast food drive-through window, and the clan heading out into the country to meet other families with the name Osbourne. The series is scheduled to air this spring, although an exact premiere date has yet to be announced. Six installments have been taped so far. "Osbournes: Reloaded" marks the Osbourne family's return to television following the phenomenal success of their MTV reality series, "The Osbournes". Osbournes talking to MTV News about Ozzfest (October 2008): "Osbournes: Reloaded" preview:

Thank God! Everytime I went to an Ozzfest all it was was a bunch of shirtless whitetrash "tough guys" slammming around in the pit. I had lawn seats and I couldn't begin to tell you how many fans were passed out drunk or stoned on the lawn. I have a feeling that Metallica will be doing some kind of festival tour and $haron knows that she can't compete with that!

Doesn't really matter to me.
I haven't been back since 2005. I only went for Maiden and Sabbath that year and got more than my money's worth, especially with Maiden.
Of course, $haron was already playing her little games by the second show of the tour in Hartford, and cut the PA for Maiden's entire first song (Wrathchild)...at the time I figured it was a random fuckup but later realized that she was behind it.
I became so disgusted by the "Eggfest" incident later that summer that I vowed never to give $haron or Ozzy another cent.

Now a bunch of rednecks will have to do the tractor pull, instead of going to a place that they call "heavy metal" of which they know hardly nothing about.
I even saw this dumbass who thought Black Sabbath were going to play "Crazy Train" one year.

You people are some rediculous haters with your complaints about the crowds. You're gonna get that at all the metal & rock concerts you go to. Ozzfest was the closest thing in the States we had to those great Euro metal fests. At least with Ozzfest, I get to see a bunch of bands I like/love in 1 day and get turned onto some bands I wouldn't normally have checked out. If you're gonna whine about the crowds, why bother going out at all, stay home & watch Headbangers Ball.

You have three messages:
Hello, Tony, it's me, Ozzy...again. I guess maybe you didn't get my last few messages. I hope your fucking answering machine isn't broke or something. Anyway, I've been telling everybody about the new Black Sabbath album for awhile now. You know, the one you and the other guys have wanted to do for the last ten years but I refused? Well, as you've probably heard, I'm now up for it! I was hoping we could have done it last year actually and do a 40th Annversary tour but I guess you guys were busy. But maybe we can do it this year. If you could just call me back, maybe we can talk. Sharon wants-I mean, I want to get a new Sabbath album out and do a new tour with you guys. Give me a call.
Next message:
Listen Tony, Ozzy again. Hope you're OK. I keep getting worried something happened to you, but then I see you'r eout on the road with Dio so I guess everything is fine. I called Geezer too and he hasn't called me back, either. Listen, I also wanted to tell you guys that maybe, y'know, maybe we can start doing some different songs in the set. I know I've been saying I can only sing those same ten every year, but y'know I've been practicing "Supernaut" and "Rock N roll Doctor" and "Hole In The Sky" and they sound pretty good. Just call me back, OK? You guys can make up the set-list next time, I don't care, just fucking call! Sharon said...I mean, it seems like we can't have an Ozzfest this year because the fans want Black Sabbath back. Give me a call, OK, Tony? Give my best to Ronnie.
Next message:
Tony, please fucking call me back! That bitch has got me on this fucking idiotic show where I'm throwing fucking fries at people! I look like a fucking idiot! I'm sorry about everything! Just help me out guys! I'm fucking stuck on an awful TV show!!!

This festival has been having attendance problems for years - even when it was FREE! With the economy in the shape it's in it would be crazy to try it this year. This is their perfect out - blame the ecconomy and just never start up again.
As far as Ozzy, I liked Ozzmosis - though I see where people may hate it. But ever since then, Ozzy's albums (and there have not been many) have gotten worse and worse. Those two 'new' Sabbath songs from the Reunion album were the worst songs ever released under the name Black Sabbath (think about that for a minute!).
Down To Earth was just horrible. Really terrible record. The boxset was a let-down - and that covers CD was simply atrocious. BAD Ozzy karaoke. And Black Rain was even worse. The only Ozzy album I have not been able to get all the way through. It's sad, but I actually dread hearing anything new from Ozzy at this point. Enough songs about how you'll keep going.
Black Rain track listing: 1-I Don't Want to Stop 2-I'm NoT going Away 3-I'm Still Here 4-Here I Am Again 5-Not Fade Away (cover) 6-I Am Not Stopping, Damn it! 7-You Thought I would Have Stopped, Don't YOU Feel Stupid? 8-What's Got Two Thumbs and Won't Stop? This Guy!!! 9-You Think I'll Stop, But I Won't! 10-I May Suck These Days, But I Keep On Going 11-I Will Survive (cover)

as much as i'd love to see that happen, america is too caught up in the "flavor of the month" bullshit when it comes to bands. sure, us diehards would be there, but we american fans can't even come close to comparing to the europeans. they embrace heavy metal, and our society shuns it. metalheads are more likely to be looked down upon in this country, whereas in europe, i'm pretty convinced it's probably the exact opposite.

And no one thinks this has nothing to do with the fact that Heaven & Hell announced that their new album is going to be out at the end of April? I think they announced that for sure yesterday, and today we get this? I swear, Ozzy's now trying to compete with his old band. He's pissed that they not only toured without him, but they're releasing a new album with them. That, and all the other alternative 'fests to go to instead of Ozzfest. 'Fests that don't give $haron O$bourne money.

The only Ozzfest I went to was in '05, and I got to see Maiden and Sabbath, AND I discovered In Flames there. So that is definitely one of the best shows I've ever been to.
That being said, I've seen Heaven and Hell twice (and not intentionally) and Dio totally blew Ozzy out of the water. I didn't even know any of the songs from the Dio years! I will never go see Ozzy or the original Sabbath lineup again, I don't want that bitch $haron getting any of my money.

In 2005 it was announced it would be Ozzy's last Ozzfest, but the tour would continue. t was said Ozzy would play select dates on future shows, but not tour Ozzfest anymore. In 2006, that is what happened: System Of A Down headlined, with Ozzy playing on a few dates. In 2007, Ozzy returned to play the festival every stop, which probably had to do a lot with the fact that it was a free, and there were no other amphitheater-sized bands willing to play for free. Then in 2008, it was announced that Ozzfest would be just one show. According to Sharron "Ozzy just did a huge world tour, and needed a break." Now this year there is no Ozzfest because Ozzy is in the studio working on a new album and wont be done until next fall. So I guess Sharron changed her mind about continuing Ozzfest without Ozzy, because these past two years there have been no Ozzfest tour because Ozzy do it.
