LAMB OF GOD: We Want To Write Songs That Make Us Want To Drive Fast, Headbang And Punch Things
- Feb. 15, 2009
Cameron Edney of Australia's Inside Out webzine recently conducted an interview with drummer Chris Adler of the Richmond, Virginia metal band LAMB OF GOD. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.
Inside Out: The [new LAMB OF GOD] album ["Wrath"] is due to hit the shelves on February 24. What are you hoping the fans will get out of the new album?
Chris Adler: It's hard to say, I think the "Sacrament" record that we did before this was obviously our most successful record and there are no regrets there, but I think in making the "Sacrament" record we experimented with the idea of being more than just a metal band, we tried some new things, sometimes uncomfortable, and sometimes not what everyone wanted. We got rid of the producer we were working with, I think he took responsibility to help us sell a bunch of records and become a popular band but we wanted to throw all of that crap out of the window. We don't want to write for radio, we don't want to write singles, we want to write songs that make us want to drive fast, headbang and punch things! I think the fans maybe were expecting us to soften up or somehow "sell out" but they will be very surprised to find that we have gone in a very different direction!
Inside Out: "Wrath" has been produced by Josh Wilbur who did an amazing job! At this stage in your career you could have chosen anyone to do the new album, what made Josh the right guy for "Wrath" and how much of an impact did he have on the overall end results?
Chris Adler: Yeah, he's not the typical guy, for sure! He's done engineering on a couple of metal records but he's never produced a proper metal record, so this is his first real shot at it and I think that's why we chose him! He's young, he's hungry, there wasn't a big ego involved, and he wasn't trying to push us to sell a ton of records and change our sound, he just wanted us to sound the best we possibly could. He had a genuine interest in pushing us and a vision. He had a real good understanding of where we were as a band and that we wanted to be a little more aggressive and get back to some of the earlier stuff that we were doing! Josh was right there with us, pushing us as hard as we were pushing each other.
Inside Out: I want to talk to you a little more about touring and life on the road…. Looking back can you recall the hardest time you ever had as an opening act?
Chris Adler: I can… we were out with the new millennium tour across North America and it was us opening then THE HAUNTED, DIMMU BORGIR and then CANNIBAL CORPSE. It was a fantastic show. As a metal fan, I would have loved to go and see it! The guys in CANNIBAL CORPSE are a bunch of sweethearts — they are amazingly cool and friendly, nice guys — but the crew they had working for them on that tour were a bunch of douche bags and they made our lives very difficult. In fact, the worst night of that tour was the last night in New York City and as we began into our last song, the tour manager for CANNIBAL CORPSE came up and began pushing our instruments off the front of the stage, and it was because during the entire tour we would not take their shit! We weren't interested in being pushed around and being told what to do! We understood our place as a new band and we were not disrespectful… we were not allowed to eat, there was no food, and there was no room onstage for us to set up! There were a lot of obstacles and we were vocal about the fact that it would be nice if someone would take into consideration that we are here to play and that people are here to see us and that we are trying to do what those guys were doing as well, that it's not a big dick competition, let us try. They really gave us a hard time! We really learned a lot from that and what we learned from that is important… you really do see the same people on the way up that you see on the way down, and you treat people… all bands, whether they're before us, after us, different stage, whatever… anyone that we meet in doing this, we try to treat them the same way we would like to be treated. It's an important lesson to rule but cruel to learn!
Inside Out: Chris, I know you're a family man… Touring the world must put a burden on family life! Do you travel with family on the road and how do you find a balance with constant touring?
Chris Adler: Yeah it's very difficult, we're still sorting that out, and it's tough! It's not a comfortable, baby-friendly existence on the road. Before the baby, my wife would come out and see the shows, stay for a week, ride on the bus and those kinds of things, now with the baby it's a new chapter, we still have to figure this out! I've seen guys do it and it's really been my dream since I was a kid to do this! My wife is very supportive and our daughter will certainly be able to check it out sooner or later and hopefully she will appreciate it as well but for me… it's everything I wanted to do and everything I've wanted to be, so I'm happy and proud of the decision although it's difficult at times!
Inside Out: The metal scene is certainly thriving right now, many bands are climbing up the charts and the amount of metal tours which have flooded Australia in recent times is unlike anything I can remember. What do you think about the direction metal music has taken over the last couple of years?
Chris Adler: Extremely positive, we came out of a scene in 1994 when there was certainly a lot of disappointing albums from a lot of the veterans and nu-metal was starting to blow up and LIMP BIZKIT was starting to sell millions of records and as a true metal head it was very discouraging and disappoint to the point that we got together and started making the noise that we make as a band, fifteen years later here we are! For us, the thing that made us want to do this was those eighties speed metal bands, early TESTAMENT and MEGADETH and I think that there's now once again a respect for that kind of metal, musicianship and song craft. It's not about the hip-hop jump up and down stuff. Real metal is back, the evolution is continuing and it's getting more extreme and crazier all the time and I love being a part of it! I think it's a very special time for music.

"Recently, there all of a sudden has been regular Lamb of God postings on here."
Well no shit, fucktard. They have a new album coming out and they're doing interviews in support of that album. Of course you're going to get an avalanche of Lamb of God news coming to Blabbermouth and every other metal news site.
Stop being an idiot, you're making metal fans look borderline retarded.

Seriously, the power of logic escapes some people...
Anyway, being a huge LoG fan and having listened to this album in its entirety for weeks now, I can say that in my opinion, it is their worst album. Still a GREAT album, but not up to Ashes, Palaces or even Sacrament. The only song that really grabs me and kicks my ass is Broken Hands. Just my OPINION, though!
Wait... Limp Bizkit was starting to sell millions of albums back in '94? I'm pretty sure that started 4-5 years later.
And who the fuck are Lamb of God to talk about being "true" metal heads? All they do is spout off all of the mainstream shit. Do these guys even know any bands outside of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Kreator or Exodus?
COMMENT | Chorale posted by : FadedLineVigil 2/15/2009 12:29:52 PM
You are just another self-important nerd that thinks they need to 'educate' the rest of us. To imply that Lamb of God is not a talented band or that they are artistically dried up 'rock stars' is RIDICULOUS. They are very talented and they are now 'popular' because of their talent. And putting LoG in the same fuckin paragraph as Kiss, GnR and Sebastian Bach is absurd. Here's a little lesson for you: Talent = Sales = Publicity. That's how things work, you fuckin dork.

Bands do interviews, its gonna happen. Don't be a knob. Chris Adler is probably the most stand up guy in metal so I wouldn't worry about him losing credibility.
Chris Adler has probably my favorite drum sound in metal. I like his style too. Good on em.
For the record, the new record is pretty sweet. I'll leave it at that.

I don't like the fact that he said "we got rid of our producer we were working with." Machine did a lot for Sacrament, and to a lesser extent, for Ashes of the Wake. Both sounded great, so show some gratitude even if it wasn't your ideal set of circumstances.

"that makes us want to drive fast, headbang and punch things." not saying a publicist didn't makes this up, but I think you're taking it too far. it's not that unique of a statement. anyone could have said it, give him a break. you're reading too far into this.

They have simply outdone themselves on this record. I have been listening to it for a couple of weeks ago and the musicianship is outstanding. You can tell that the year they took off was not for a vacation but rather to practice. Chris Adler absolutely destroys with his ripping of striaght 16th notes through the albume. And it does sound different because lamb of god up to this point has pretty much played in minor and on track 10 they play some major chords which sounds alot different then what a normal log album sounds like. This album musically is their best to date it my not be their catchiest album but it is sound from a musicianship stand point.

Having heard more of it, I really like the new album. Can't wait to actually buy and see em live.
Having said that, I don't like hearing them harp on sacrament so much. Like it was a sell out album or something. I thought it was an amazing and unique slab of metal. The perfect mix of their trademark agression mixed in seemlessly with a plethora of epic.
Their whole catalog is stellar which is nice to see. They really need a publicist though! Geez.

COMMENT | Chorale Satana Real Name Revealed posted by : My Secret Circus 1/16/2009 3:36:04 AM
No folks, Chorale Satana's real name is not "Chorale Satana." As is revealed at this URL:
Chorale Satana's father Igay Vbirthtoacocksucker (b. 1944, Appleton, Minipenis – d. August 28, 2002), was a Canadian-born Retarded painter. His work is exhibited at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York City. According to Dipshit.com ([1] [2]), Vbirthtoacocksucker was primarily active in California and Canada, and he was best known for producing children with small dicks and really fuckin low I.Qs ........
So folks, the former Blabbermouth poster known as Chorale Satana's real name is actually "Smalldickedmotherfucker Whomnoonegivesaflyingmonkeyshitabout III."
Now that this revelation is out of the way, the only remaining unknown here is whether or not his father fucked his cousin or his grandmother in order to give birth to his fucktard

first off, being washed up rockstars would make them incapable of writing a good album, yes? problem there is that wrath is a sick, sick, sick album, it just takes getting used to, just like sacrament did. remember the first time you heard sacrament, and you didnt know what to think, you didnt want to say to yourself you didnt like it but thats kinda how you felt? then you wouldnt give up on it, wouldnt believe it, so you kept listening to it, and look now, everyone loves that fucking record, because it is musicianship at some of its finest.
chorale santana, i think its just to hard for you to accept the fact that a really good, quality, talented METAL band can sell records and be popular. you think pantera didnt have a publicist? testament? slayer, you think they DONT have a publicist? its absurd buddy, your argument dont make any sense, there is no proof AT ALL that chris didnt actually say those things, and personally, that whole interview i can totally imagine and hear chris adler say all those things from the heart, he has a very intelligent, smart, sophisticated manner about him, he is a perfectionist, and if you have seen interviews with him and passed high school english, you could see that.
you can say what you want chorale, but lamb of god is tighter than ever, the new album is completely different than all there others, yet it is still skull crushing, savage, lamb of god style heavy metal, the only metal that sounds like that. to say that album is not good just proves that you truely dont know anything about music, or just cant admit that your wrong and that the 99.9% of people posting on this article agree. fuck off. everybody hates you. anything you say every single person on here will disregard, in fact they will probably read it, tell there friends about it and make fun of you for it. it doesnt matter if you dont care. all that matters is that everyone hates you, and theres nothing you can do about it.

"In Your Words" definitly sounds like it could be off of Sacrament, but other than that, this new album kicks some serious ass! You know when bands talk about how this album is heavier and more melodic at the same time.......well, these guys seriously pulled it off! I love the acoustic intros...shows a totally different side to them, and its called Dynamics..........These guys will forever be in the forefront......In the words of Mark Morton..."Fans just want to keep you in their back pocket...and they are always wanting you to do what you did last...Get your own fucking band" Makes perfect sense!!!!!!!!!
