BLACK SABBATH: Deluxe Expanded Edition Of 'Paranoid' Due In April - Feb. 17, 2009
On April 6, Universal Music in the U.K. will release the deluxe expanded edition of BLACK SABBATH's classic "Paranoid album.

"Paranoid" is the first release in a set of BLACK SABBATH deluxe expanded editions. Each remastered album includes an additional disc of previously unheard outtakes, demos and instrumental tracks taken from the original studio sessions.

"Paranoid" is expanded to a triple-disc containing the extremely rare 1974 Quadraphonic mix of the album. The album also includes deluxe digipak gatefold packaging with expanded booklets containing rare and previously unseen photographs, comprehensive sleeve-notes telling the story behind each album and include images of rare single covers and memorabilia from the period.

"Paranoid" is the second album by the British heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH. It was released in the United Kingdom during September 1970, and contains some of their most famous work, including the songs "Iron Man", "War Pigs" and the title track. The album is regarded as a classic of the heavy metal genre and one of the most influental heavy metal albums. It has been certified four-times-platinum, having sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone, making it BLACK SABBATH's best-selling album.

The "Paranoid" single, released before the album, reached No. 4 in the U.K. Pushed by its success, the album hit number one in the U.K., and is the only BLACK SABBATH album to have done so. The U.S. release was held until January 1971, as the "Black Sabbath" album was still on the charts at the time of "Paranoid"'s U.K. release. The album broke into the top ten in the U.S. in March 1971, and would go on to sell four million copies in the U.S. alone, with virtually no radio airplay.

Paranoid doesn't need to be re-released, especially with the great version in the Black Box

What we need is Headless Cross re-released, big time, hopefully there will be a Tony Martin box set similar to the Dio one that came out recently, not likely, but one can hope

Sabbath are my idols but I won't buy this. Don't see the appeal. What kind of ottakes? Ozzy sucking on a bong during the recording of rat salad? You know it's going to cost a hell of alot more than the cd alone. Pass..... bring on H&H....

I'll get it, for sure. I bet the demo tracks will sound cool, like 'diamonds in the rough' maybe. I am kinda bummed that there aren't any tunes we've not heard on there. No unreleased Sabbath tracks to unearth. They rule nontheless. I'll buy anything that says Black Sabbath on it.

Cash grab? Yeah, but fucking hell, man - this one is well worth shelling out for. The instrumentals are going to be awesome to jam with.

DIG IT!

This same set had 4 release dates in '08, all of which came and went. Of course, I say this in hopes that it will happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

COMMENT | I can understand the alternate takes...

Disclaimer: I love Black Sabbath.

But lets be honest, who wants to hear an instrumental version of War Pigs? That song is boring enough as it is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrophonic

It's basically "surround sound" for the 70's.

I love the Sabs, but this is BS! If you NEVER bought the album before than this is great and this is for you, but for us old geezers, who cares about this shite, really?

Sabbath is my favorite band, I will definitely buy this even though it'll be my 3rd or 4th time buying Paranoid. Black Box version was great, I'll probably keep that version on my iTunes playlist and load discs 2 and 3 of this.

i can't beLIEve that back in 1971 the Sabbath boys sat around and said look @ about April 2009 a.d. we should hold on to these outtakes and release them on a 3 disc set. SCREW THOSE GREEDY RECORD COMPANIES!!!

This release will probably sound pretty good, but it's not necessary. I'm kinda sad that Iommi, who owns the name Black Sabbath, would see fit to try and push this on us fans. It's like AC/DC's "Back In Black" where there are now so many released versions that it's ridiculous.

I love Sabbath, with any line-up, but I can't imagine spending money on "Paranoid" AGAIN. Let's get "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or the self-titled album out with rarities and from those sessions. Maybe make a boxed set of nothing but alternate versions and live tracks from the original line-up? At least that would be something different for a change.

COMMENT | I will buy it for the fourth time

first the cheap castle version
second the castle remaster
third the US Sabbath remaster box
now this one!!

Tony will be pleased :-)

will there be a fifth one in the future with a restored DVD from Paris 1970 TV recording?? Probably in 2012

COMMENT | Anyone calling this set a "cash grab" is an idiot!

That means all of you haven't heard it and are prejudging it.

This is the single BEST version of Paranoid since vinyl. Period.

The original CDs: muddy as hell
The Rhino set: Ridiculously overcompressed, bassy and boomy.
The Castle remaster and Japanese editions were decent but tepid.

This Sanctuary is the right mix, allowing the album's original midrange to shine through. That means you'll hear the album as it was intended in 1970 with Iommi, Ward and Butler's unique instrumentation intact.

Second: The Quad Mix was an all-new remix utilizing alternate guitar, bass, drums and vocal parts in 1974. It's been expanded to 5.1 on DVD, and is an extremely cool alternate version of the album.

Third: The extras are embryonic versions of the songs for hardcore fans who like to hear earlier, alternate tracks. While the Paranoid album only has a few interesting curiosities, Master of Reality has both alternate takes and an unheard song, while the debut album has the uncut 10 minute longer version of "Warning" which fans have been clamoring for for decades!

I have the Deluxe Edition of Paranoid,Black Sabbath and Master of Reality. The instrumental tracks are good but the out-take or alternative lyric tracks make you appreciate the fact that they vastly improved the lyrics for the final cut.
I also have the Motorhead Deluxe Editions and I have come to the conclusion that besides being collector's editions,I am not impressed by the majority of the alternative takes.
What I'd like these bands to do is release their libraries with the sound quality being equal to the cassette and vinyl recordings.
That'd be awesome.
