Guitarist JIM MARTIN Not Taking Part In Rumored FAITH NO MORE Reunion
- Feb. 18, 2009
|
|
Rumors are gaining momentum that the hugely influential '90s alt-metal band FAITH NO MORE is planning to reunite for a number of European festival appearances this summer. A source close to guitarist Jim Martin, who was in the group from 1983 until 1993, has told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the axeman expressed interest in taking part in the reunion after being recently contacted by keyboardist Roddy Bottum and a member of FAITH NO MORE's management team, but that the band inexplicably decided to utilize a different guitarist — believed to be one of several musicians that were in FAITH NO MORE following Martin's exit from the group — for the upcoming dates. Although Kerrang! magazine reported in November that a number of U.K. concert venues had been placed on hold for FAITH NO MORE dates next spring, bassist Billy Gould downplayed the speculation, saying, "If anything like this were to happen, it would have to come from the band, and I haven't spoken with any of them in over a year." Meanwhile, U.K. promoter Andy Copping also said FAITH NO MORE's return this year was unlikely, telling Metal Hammer, " FAITH NO MORE haven't managed to get that PR machine together ... All of the band members haven't agreed to do it." Martin left FAITH NO MORE in 1993 due to "internal conflicts" and was replaced by FNM singer Mike Patton's MR. BUNGLE bandmate Trey Spruance. Trey also exited soon after recording 1995's "King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime", just before the band was to begin a world tour. Spruance was replaced by Dean Menta, the band's guitar roadie. FAITH NO MORE's final studio CD, "Album of the Year", was released in 1997 and featured yet another new guitarist, Jon Hudson, who was a former roommate of Billy Gould.

Haven´t they settled their differences after so long? A VERY big disappointment if Jim does not take part, he was imagewise and guitarwise a distinctive force in the band. I don´t find it as a FULL reunion, a VERY big letdown. If they play live, I would consider seriously not going to see them, though I am very pissed off at the moment, who knows later.

The core of FNM is Bottum, Gould, and Bordin. While Patton is the poster boy, and Martin is the popular choice, technically a reunion could go on without them. Gould said so in an article about 3-5 years ago.
Anyway, I'd go see them no matter who fills the guitar slot... as long as it's not Dean. YUK.

They will probably recruit the guitarist from Album Of The Year, which is the worst FNM guitarist in the history. He was in the band only because he was a close friend of Gould. And that is why Jim Martin is not in the reunion line-up. For me, Martin was a definitive part of FNM's sound, and they have never been the same since he departed. Angel Dust was their last classic, and although he didn't have much input on it songwritingwise, his unique guitar sound and playing was there.
So no Jim Martin = No real reunion for me.

I understand your point but a reunion with Chuck Mosely would be a complete joke. Patton is the frontman. Now for the guitar player... I would prefer Jim martin, but what about the songs he wasn´t involved with... that would be a problema, probably.
I don´t see this reunion happening... yet I would like to, I´ve seen them twice (with Jim) and it´s one of the best shows I have ever seen...

`While Patton is the poster boy, and Martin is the popular choice, technically a reunion could go on without them. Gould said so in an article about 3-5 years ago.´
If that is true, the majority would not give a shit because someone so versatile as Patton (especially him) is not to be found easily, and someone like Martin would be easier, but he has struck very deep in the fans, and I disagree that he does not belong to the core, ´cause he´s been the axeman in the glory days of the band.
`I'd go see them no matter who fills the guitar slot.´ This makes no sense to me.

King For a Day probably is their best album and Trey was the guitarist for that, so hopefully it's him that fills in. This would be the most ultimate reunion ever! Fuck Van Halen, this would blow that one out of the water.
I think Chuck Mosely should be the singer for the reunion.

I'll believe it when I see it. I don't think it'll happen, but anything can (and does) happen. I saw them live when they were touring in support for Angel Dust, with Helmet opening for them. Relatively small venue, but it kicked ass. MTV was along for the ride at the time as well, which helped promote the concert in the area. Fairly decent turnout, pretty good concert. I though Helmet kind of sucked, but FNM put on a hell of a show.
Now, any time you have a band with different lineups, there will always be debate on who should play. I think most of us would agree with Mike Patton, although I have to admit seeing the band with Chuck again for a couple songs off of We Care A Lot or Introduce Yourself might not be so bad.
As for who plays the guitar, that's a bit harder, but I think I'd have to go with Jim Martin on this one too. Sure, they made two albums after his departure, but they went through more guitarists than that.
And so what if Jim were to play songs that he wasn't around for? What do you think other bands do, axe anything that their current lineup wasn't in the studio for?

they have no actual keys :P and well Patton is a buffoon, while not an entirely bad vocalist n all, all his extreme projects are extremely pretentious and he comes off as a highly antagonistic and rather moronic individual by ie, making comments about other bands not being in the now, while he just yells and screams and grunts and sells records like that to teenage kids that just want to impress their peers and scare parents by being rebellious and anti-conformist ! Woa big deal.... only he takes that role too damn seriously ...

As I understand it, Jim Martin quit the band (or was fired) after the rest of the bunch got fed up with his lack of self-discipline and drinking issues or whatever. Moreover, his guitar work isn't essential to the perfomance of the band as a whole - it's not a unique trademark of their sound IMO, and I've listened to FNM since the early 90's. He's a stand-up player, and he did some pretty nice riffs and licks in the past, but if it comes down to a bloke with personal problems and he can't cope with the rest of the band then they should go on without him. But without Patton this would be a futile attempt, if it's true that they're gonna reunite.

I can't believe this story keeps popping up. As much as I'd love them to reunite, the chances are slim. I'd love for it to happen even with Mosely on vocals. Hard to picture tearing Bordin away from his dream job with the Ozzy band. And Patton these days seems more concerned about appearing on the cover of The Source.

While I wouldn't boycott this if it happens with Jim, I would wear my FNM shirt with him on it(the one where they're all standing in their boxers).

He was great with them, don't get me wrong, though, it hardly matters...

I would argue Angel Dust is their best album and that album had very little input from Big Jim. I would rather see Trey Spruance in the band.

i can't even understand why some of you don't consider his playing to be an integral part of what made faith no more so special. the black sabbath-esque thrash influenced razor sharp riffs and dissonant solos, combined with a funk influenced bassist and a powerhouse drummer prone to playing tribal rhythms, and then the keys floating on top of that....hell FNM were the first band i'd ever heard where i actually liked the keys and thought they added a lot as opposed to automatically making a band suck like they usually did. and then patton singing and rapping over the top of it. there was simply nothing else like it at the time. but even introduce yourself was a killer cd as well, all those elements were in place prior to patton joining the band....it just so happened that all those songs sounded better when patton sang them than when mosely did. introduce yourself, the real thing, and angel dust were all moster albums IMO, but when they lost jim the chemistry was gone. there was some decent stuff here and there afterwards but to me it was all hit or miss, and none of it had the ferocity they had when jim was in the band. it just seemed like they were desperately trying to keep the band alive, limping along while interest in the band waned and they eventually split up. i don't think the cd's the made after his departure were bad really, but i've always thought anybody who would actually champion those later cd's over their FAR superior earlier material likely never got to see that lineup live, so they really had no idea what they'd missed out on. and that was one of the best live bands i've ever seen.
anyway, bottom line for me is no jim = no reunion. which is sad because i've been hoping for one for a very, very long time.

Anyhoo, I'm not against catching an FNM show without him, I'm just sayin' ...
Also... I'm not knocking anyone's opinion, but what's the argument for King For A Day? I've heard that mentioned a few times on a few threads, and man, I just didn't connect with it. Talk to me, I am curious about others' opinions on this.

`A source close to guitarist Jim Martin, who was in the group from 1983 until 1993, has said that the axeman expressed interest in taking part in the reunion after being recently contacted by keyboardist Roddy Bottum and a member of Faith No More's management team, but that the band inexplicably decided to utilize a different guitarist for shows.´
No Jim Martin= no FNM

I bought every one of their disks before Matin's departure, and never bought one after he left. The guy's guitar riffs were amazing and part of the reason they sold so many records. The replacement guitarists have been totally lame and frankly their music went downhill post Jim Martin.

Big Sick Jim grew up playing with Cliff Burton and James Heftield and played some really heavy rips. So there was not a lot of compromise when it came to keepin it real. Jim wanted more guitar sound in Angle Dust but Patten started whinning about it and cut it out. The only song on the album he took full control of was Dizzlobber which is arguably the best one song on the album. FNM wanted to become musicians and Big Sick Jim only wanted to play Rock n Roll.
Surprise Your, Dead Dizzlobber, Woodpeckers From Mars (Cliff Burton). FNM never made music like that after he left the band. There is really NO REUNION WITHOUT HIM.
