FAITH NO MORE Officially Confirms Reunion Plans; Band Lineup Revealed
- Feb. 25, 2009
|
|
FAITH NO MORE bassist Bill Gould has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET: " FAITH NO MORE has always stood out as some sort of unique beast; part dog, part cat — its music almost as schizophrenic as the personalities of its members. When it all worked, it worked really well, even if the chemistry was always volatile. "Throughout our 17 years of existence, the mental and physical energy required to sustain this creature was considerable and relentless. Though amicable enough, when we finally split, we all followed paths seemingly destined to opposite ends of the universe. Yet during the entire 10 years that have passed since our decision to break up we've experienced constant rumors and requests from fans and promoters alike. Nevertheless, for whatever reason, none of us kept in regular touch, much less to discuss any possibilities of getting together. "What's changed is that this year, for the first time, we've all decided to sit down together and talk about it. And what we've discovered is that time has afforded us enough distance to look back on our years together through a clearer lens and made us realize that through all the hard work, the music still sounds good, and we are beginning to appreciate the fact that we might have actually done something right. Meanwhile, we find ourselves at a moment in time with zero label obligations, still young and strong enough to deliver a kick-ass set, with enthusiasm to not only revisit our past but possibly add something to the present. And so with this we've decided to hold our collective breaths and jump off this cliff.... BACK, GOD FORBID, INTO THE MONKEY CAGE!!! "We can only hope that the experience of playing together again will yield results erratic and unpredictable enough to live up to the legacy of FNM. "Who knows where this will end or what it will bring up... only the future knows. But we are about to find out!" FAITH NO MORE 2009 is: Mike Bordin - Drums Roddy Bottum - Keyboards Bill Gould - Bass Jon Hudson - Guitar Mike Patton - Vocals Patton's publicist told MTV News that FAITH NO MORE was playing in Europe only, with no North American dates scheduled. The exact dates and countries have yet to be confirmed. Although it was rumored that FAITH NO MORE would headline California's Coachella festival in mid-April, only Patton is performing at the event. As previously reported, a source close to guitarist Jim Martin, who was in FAITH NO MORE from 1983 until 1993, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the axeman expressed interest in taking part in the reunion after being recently contacted by keyboardist Roddy Bottum and a member of FAITH NO MORE's management team, but that the band ultimately decided to utilize Hudson for the upcoming dates. Martin left FAITH NO MORE in 1993 due to "internal conflicts" and was replaced by FNM singer Mike Patton's MR. BUNGLE bandmate Trey Spruance. Trey also exited soon after recording 1995's "King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime", just before the band was to begin a world tour. Spruance was replaced by Dean Menta, the band's guitar roadie. FAITH NO MORE's final studio CD, "Album of the Year", was released in 1997 and featured yet another new guitarist, Jon Hudson, who was a former roommate of Billy Gould.

They won't bring this Martin-less Faith No More to the States cause no one here really cares to see a "non Real Thing" FNM lineup.
No matter what they did after The Real Thing--Americans get stuck in time when it comes to bands and reunions.

Martin has always been too one-dimensional for me, though it worked well with the classic material. But, they couldn't put out "The Real Thing" over and over. As I band I don't think the later releases would have been nearly as diverse if he was still in the band. King For A Day will always be an all time favorite for me. I hope to see another release someday, but I am not holding my breath...

I guess since I'm the immature fanboy you're referring to, can you then tell me which songs Jim Martin actually wrote and created?
PS. Hudson can kick Chuck Norris's ass. And he just pwned you with a custom forged (for you) red hot poker, straight into the rectum, no chaser.

If Martin was OK with a reunion, I don't see why he wasn't included.
Their best work was with him and he brought a specific feel to the band.
He was even friends with Cliff Burton if my memory serves me.

I would prefer see him too, both FNM gigs I saw were with him on guitar, but.... the the core of their music was always gould, bordin and bottum (plus patton, of course), so... better than nothing

I never really got into FNM for the guitar work in it. So I guess I could careless if he is in or out. I'm not sure why he isn't and I'm guessing the others in the band feel he was biggest problem that lead to other problems within the band. Maybe its a good thing he isn't involved now as maybe the band will continue instead of a tour or two.
Love it that they're back together. Just going through my head and its hard vision where they really fit in todays music scene. Rock music scene is really split today into three groups. You got your fans of styles like Nickelback, Hinder, etc.. Then you got your Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Sevendust, Seether, Stone Sour, etc. styles. Then its the Slipknot, All that Remains, etc. hardcore genre style. You got fans that cross all those styles but not alot. You also have some bands that cross the bridge between some styles. I guess I just have a hard time thinking of what kind of bands would tour with FNM. Whenever Tool comes back out I think that would be a great double headliner show. Maybe something with Alice in Chains.

"FAITH NO MORE has always stood out as some sort of unique beast; part dog, part cat — its music almost as schizophrenic as the personalities of its members."
Why do bands love to misuse the word "schizophrenia?" There's no such thing as a "schizophrenic personality." There's "schizoid" personality, but schizophrenia is an "Axis I" disorder, which does not apply to personality. Implying that schizophrenia has anything to two with a "split" mind or character, is wrong as well.

In terms of music, this is almost the best news ever. The best news ever would be them confirming they were going to make new music and just return as a band. But the possibility of that makes this still extremely great news. Faith No More is imo, hands down, the most innovative, jaw dropping band ever. Angel Dust has been my #1 album since it's release...and I don't think that will change.
I am fnm and mike patton's biggest fan, altho nothing mike has done compares to faith no more, for me. Bungle was close tho. And I have practically every track of every patton project out there, a lot of it I liked...but I always thought...what a shame. The most talented singer...and the most talented band....and they're not together.
I always hoped and hoped, even when my friends told me to give it up. But now I am just extremely stoked to hear this. Unfortunately, they're only playing europe as of now. I know how they were appreciated over there, and not here. I don't know how that happens. Drove me nuts. But I know a lot of people here that absolutely LOVE FNM. But..I won't get to see them as I'm in the states. I'll hope that somehow they tour the US and then I'll see multiple shows....AND I'll PRAY that they..please please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...make new music. Make tons of people so happy.
I gotta say..for me...the state of music just got a hell of a lot more relevant.

Fairly great news...It still sorta reminds me of "Sucking in a turd" after you've sat for a long time and tried like hell to push it out...it just ain't right ya know? It's alotta wasted effort. Without Jim back in the band it's just weird to me. However there is a fine line between genius and "Down Syndrome" in human beings which can often be detected at birth by reading the lines on the palms of newborn children in an effort to detect a "Simian" line, which some scientists believe is the missing link between humans and apes. As long as F.N.M. ain't chunkin' feces our direction, I generally won't have a rea;;y big problem with it.

Faith No More were a talented bunch who knew how to write decent songs - something sorely lacking within the landscape of musical artists today, who seem more preoccupied with fashionable hair styles and wearing 'skinny jeans' to be bothered with writing intelligent & innovative music.
Now the kids will get the chance to see what a real band sounds like, even if it is without Big Sick Ugly Jim Martin.

What about bringing everyone involved in the band instead? This reunion will not please everyone and this should be one of the main reason to reform: to serve the audience with a final serving of this once great band; it fails in some ways.
I'd consider seeing this in America with Martin; I won't miss it not coming here, tough.

I saw them open for Guns and Rose and Metallica back on that big tour at Rich Stadium in Buffalo in 89 or 90. They didn't even finish their set. They got booed off the stage. Drunken Metallica fans are rough! They pretty much did suck live though. Stadiums are not for them.

I don't see how jim martin not being there is weird. From the 4 patton LP's..he was only truly involved in The Real Thing....and minimally on Angel Dust. King For A Day and Album of the Year were fantastic albums too. Still 100% FNM. I wasn't there..but got the impression he was moving in a different direction from the envelope-pushing core of the group. I think most people that really followed them understand this. But...comparing this in anyway to.."sucking in a turd"...now THAT IS weird.

BITCHING ABOUT JIM MARTIN?????????????
WHY?????????
Faith No More isn't a band you'd get into because of guitar work. Hell he didn't have much to do with the band after the Real Thing anyways. Musically that band is all about Gould and Bordin vision. Then Patton really topped it off on the vocals. Martin or any guitar player in FNM is nothing more then after thought in the big picture of FNM. Some of you are talking like this is Metallica without Hetfield.

There are some fickle fuckers around this site......so jims not there...so what....this does not mean the songs change, from what i hear the guitarist in place is better than him anyways.... I mean if you wanna get into it...Chuck was the original lead so does this mean its not a real reunion at all ....no....
Most of you on here just aren't happy unless you are whining about something....get a grip of yourselves,, theres an opportunity to see a great live band here and you get hung up on one member or just like to jump on the bandwagon (i hoping its just the kiddies who do this)...
Over and over with many bands you keep hearing the same shit....Sepultura seem to get it the worst as an example because they are still going....and more power to them for this btw.....max or igor arent an entire band....just as jim is not the sole member of fnm.....

you make a good point, however, Jim's guitar style, while limited, was powerful at the time, and you simply cannot deny his presence within the overall band; stage presence counts when you are a rock band, that's just a fact.
as for this Hudson dude, isn't he the guy that played on 'Album of the year'? the guitar playing on that was really unimaginative.
the most versatile playing was on 'King for a day...', and that was because of Spruance.
anyway, i could care less about Faith No More nowadays. 'Mit Gas' was much better than 'Album of the year', and i feel that patton has moved on and done (mostly) better work since, and this is coming from someone that was a fan at the time, and saw them live 5 times back in their prime.
what i really want to know is how much money they were offered though. Patton said the only time he would do a reunion is if he was offered an absolute shitload of money, and hinted at that point that the offers already made were not substancial.
something obviously changed.

Fuck Jim Martin. Hudson is the man. Who can fucking care for the stereotype of the late eighties early nineties? I am very fucking pleased that they are reuniting, and the fact that Jim is not included can't make me more or less happy about the reunion.

I just can´t understand that, after so long, they haven´t come to terms with Jim Martin. They must´ve ended up seriously bad or just despised him, thing that makes this `reunion´ more uninteresting, just my opinion. Again, no JM=no FNM.

`A source close to guitarist Jim Martin, who was in the group from 1983 until 1993, has said that the axeman expressed interest in taking part in the reunion after being recently contacted by keyboardist Roddy Bottum and a member of Faith No More's management team, but that the band inexplicably decided to utilize a different guitarist for shows.´
You´ve seen it here, they have DESPISED him, not even bothering to take him seriously. The way he´s been treated is just disgusting, and this reinforces my opinion: no Martin=no FNM.

Jim martin bas always been overated. I mean, listen carefully to his parts on both The Real Thing and Angel Dust. his playing is totally unpersonnal. Spruance did an amazing job on "king for a day". Hudson is a good player, but on stage, he looks like he just don't care. Well, it's not as if people were not focused on Patton, at the end of the day.

1. Trey Spruance is the BEST guitarist that FNM have ever worked with (played on King For A Day, originally the guitarist for Mr Bungle)
2. Dean Menta is the second best guitarist for FNM, only played on King For A Day tour, and he was a technically superb guitar player who also fit the band
3. Jim Martin is THE guitarist for FNM... Fuck, his image ALONE is enough for him to be THE guitarist for FNM. Besides, he had a very original sound that brought a lot to their sound, no matter he wrote songs or not. And he did write the 2 best songs from Angel Dust and The Real Thing (Jizzlobber and Zombie Eaters)
and...
4. Jon Hudson is THE WORST FNM guitarist ever... Hands down. Martin may not be technically excellent, but he still is unique and an intergral part of their pre-King For A Day era (the glory days). On the other hand, Jon Hudson played on the songwritingwise the worst Patton-era FNM album, namely Album Of The Year (they gave this title to the album, ironically, because they thought it sucked). Hudson technically is even worse than Martin (watch the live videos from that era), and he is a weak songwriter as well.
Than why is Hudson in the band?
Well. Because he is a close friend of Bill Gould's.
But sorry Bill, Hudson have never really meld together well with FNM, and he didn't stay in the band enough to become an integral part of it.
This is not a true, or complete reunion. This definitely is for the money only. What a letdown!

besides them announcing US dates, new album, etc...
would be if Trey Spruance was on guitar, meaning that he and Mikey stopped being bitches, and then we could FINALLY get a new Bungle album.
But I guess that's just me being greedy :-)

Yet another 90's name trying to make a few more bucks while they can.
They broke up for a good reason. Angel Dust and The Real Thing were great. Now they're just going to look like the hair metal reunions 10 years ago: washed up.

If you've read the interviews and if you followed the career of this band, you would know Jim Martin wrote and rewrote much of FNM's material including Angel Dust. He was responsible for assembling the artwork for the album Angel Dust. In an interview he stated he had to teach each band member to play the musical compositions that he did write and his style was limited by the ability of the remaining bandmembers to perform the music. His influence is very obvious. Jim said in another interview:"fuck the fame, just give me the money!" that's why he's not part of this coverband reunion. He obviously didn't want to be in Mike Pattons monkey circus. No Jim Martin = coverband

Man I can not even imagine what fnm would sound like today, in regards to new music. I would do anything to hear that. I used to throw fnm release party/celebrations I was so excited to hear new music. God I hope I get to do that again.
They could really help the sorry state of commercial music. I know a lot of people consider pop music the devil, but there can be good pop music/alternative music too. It doesn't have to be like so many un-innovative bands that are out there. FNM were always on the outmost edges of commercial, doing really innovative, interesting stuff within that realm. They were so good they were "dazzling". Incredible music and more incredible live. I've seen a few sincere standing O's during their concerts. The media just never latched onto that.
I think patton is hands-down the best vocalist, billy the best bassist, puffy the best drummer, and roddy with the keys just adds so much. Esp. Patton tho, he's like a national treasure..and he's always so under the radar. Like john lennon or kurt cobain not being seen, to me. Maximizing that mind-blowing talent. I'd love to see him...them....back out on the big stage again. Showing everyone how it's done. If anyone can do that...it's them.

What complete rubbish. King For A Day and Album Of The Year are both outstanding pieces of work which had nothing to do with Martin. Jim Martin musically was the weakest member of FNM. He was Cliff Burtons friend- big fucking deal.

Yeah. I have to agree. Some people are acting as if martin being absent has the magnitude of patton not being there. I don't get that. And I would prefer jim...if that were possible...but I believe that it couldn't work with him. Therefore..to complain about jim not being involved..is a moot point to me. I just don't get hearing such huge news and complaining about such a small point. Like starving, getting a ham, and then complaining you didn't get mustard too (Tony Soprano). Ha.

I agree that while Jim Martin era FNM was awesome, they DID put out tons of great stuff after he left. It took them in new creative directions, something that Jim did not like, which was the cause of much of the tension during the making of "Angel Dust." I think the real secret sauce of Faith No More is Mike Patton, Mike Bordin and Billy Gould. I can't wait for their reunion and hope it includes some US dates and a new studio CD! *prays* Welcome back Faith No More! The music world has missed you!
