DAVE MUSTAINE To METALLICA: 'I Am So Very Proud Of All You Have Accomplished'
- Feb. 27, 2009
|
|
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has posted the following "open letter" on the band's official web site: " METALLICA, as you know, has been selected to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So, it is with much respect that I say congratulations! "I also had the nice surprise of hearing that they called to invite me to the pre-ceremony party the night before, and then to the actual ceremony. Unfortunately, as you all know, I will be winding down our European tour with JUDAS PRIEST, so I will be unable to attend. However, I'd like to say to Lars ( Ulrich) and James ( Hetfield), I am so very proud of all you have accomplished. I will continue to pray for the very best for you and your families, as I always have. "Thank you for the invitation and thinking of me." MEGADETH's "Priest Feast" European tour with JUDAS PRIEST and TESTAMENT is scheduled to wrap on March 23 in Amsterdam, Holland. METALLICA will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during an April 4 ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall. In a late 2008 interview with Rolling Stone magazine about the band's nomination for induction, Hetfield was asked who will be onstage with METALLICA when they get inducted. "Everyone that played on a record should be there," he said. "You're considered for the Hall 25 years after your first recording, not after you formed." After being told that this would omit Dave Mustaine, Hetfield replied, "He wasn't on a record. Jason Newsted [former METALLICA bassist] should be up there — he was in the band for 14 years and played on quite a few records. And so should Robert [ Trujillo; current METALLICA bassist]." Asked if it will be weird to be there with Jason, Hetfield said, "There's no reason for it to be weird. We don't want to be part of the soap opera of the Hall of Fame. Everybody wants a train wreck, like with BLONDIE onstage arguing over crap [in 2006]. That really cheapens the moment."

Considering their history, I think it was big of him to say congrats to them. Mustaine has been through a lot of things phychologically throughout his adult life with Metallica so for him to say these words, shows what kind of a person he truely is.
If you're reading this (althought I doubt it). Nice.

hatchet can be buried. Both bands are real good and have accomplished a lot. Their styles are different enough that there's really no need for direct comparison anyway. The shit that resulted in Dave being booted was a result of them all being immature. Had they been older, Dave probably would have gotten some help for his drinking or the other guys would have asked him to do this, but at age 18 and trying to make a band work, it's understandable that things had to go the way they did.
The Monster movie scenes were painful- wish Lars had reached out to Dave a little more, and it was weird to see Dave so bothered by Met's success when he had achieved a lot on his own. Guess that's what happens between highly competitive people who've got some good & bad history.
Seems Lars has been going out of his way to complement Dave the last year or so, and now the favor's returned. Now they should tour together at some point.

Good for Dave!
I hope this opens the door for a big four world tour, but I think Testament has long since taken over Anthrax's slot. And its been a long time since Metallica have been thrash most of the time, hell even Megadeth haven't been playing the genre full time either. Slayer is the last of the original four still standing...

Mustaine isn't on any Metallica records, but his solos are!!!
And "And Justice For All" is the first Metallica record that didn't have anything Mustaine wrote on it.
But it's true, he's not on any of the records, and I only hope his own band will get recognition too but I'm not holding my breath. While I haven't liked anything Megadeth has done since the 2nd album, Dave is still one of the godliest axemen ever, if only he'd show it more often...

Taking the high road and then Dave shoots back from an even higher road.
The question is, when will Megadeth get it's due at the Hall. And how about Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, UFO, Slayer, Anthrax and the hundred or so bands that Metallica have either borrowed or stolen from to get to this point. Don't you have to honor your influences before you yourself receive honors. I'm not saying they don't deserve it but the Hall of Lame has always played favorites. In this case, it's no different, at all.

I didn´t expect this from Dave. He isn´t going to be invited `cause he hasn´t been on any record, and then he wishes the best, good for him. He must have changed a lot in order to have said that if he really means it. Anyway, I don´t see it very clear that they have settled their differences in the end. Strange, very strange....

Yea so he didn't congratulate Kirk. Haha. So that means he has animosity towards the lead guitarist that took his place in the band and stole his fame. Dave is like a repressed child, he seems as if he is trying to compete with Metallica and the fame that they have achieved. He seems to have much regret about having been so messed up on drugs to where they kicked him out of the band and he was lacking the foresight to foresee the greatness that Metallica would become. Dave you are a junkie.

That Metallica's invitation of Mustaine to the ceremony resembles that of which one might invite someone to his/her wedding out of guilt because he has helped achieve the greatness whcih they have achieved. Kinda like inviting that ex-girlfriend that you do out of respect, but hope to god they do not accept and actually show up.

Yes, that certainly appeared to be the case, Lars. So why did you piss on his legacy by releasing the unforgivable (no pun intended) bullshit you did in the '90s?
Stop continuing to try and legitimise what should have been a career ending phase of your existence. It happened, it sucked, you're fucking lucky to have such a loyal fan base that'd eat up any ol' shit you dished out.
Is it just me who'd prefer Lars never said another word in public?

I believe MEGADETH has won the musical war between the two bands. They have always been, in my humble opinion, the better deliverers of material (or Dave I guess I should say)...not withstanding Risk etc. The last two albums are completely phenomenal. Maybe, and hopefully, Dave has realized this and truly moved on. To Dave I would say, "So what made 15 million instead of 50 million?" (that's just a guess...just for comparison's sake) you have platinum hanging on your wall, classic non-Metallica albums under your belt that will never be forgotten and thousands upon thousands of bands / musicians would slit the throats of children to have accomplished what you have.
MEGADETH!!!!!!!!!

Dave should be inducted with them because he has writing credit on Metallica's first 2 albums. Playing on an album is not as important as writing material for it. Bob Rock played bass on St. Anger so should he be up there too? According to James yes lol.

I agree with pistonslap 100% on that. He may not have played on the first album, but he was an integral part of it. That album wouldn't have existed without him. And for as much as this whole Metallica/Megadeth feud went on for WAY too long, Dave has been much more consistent and prolific throughout the last 26 years. He belongs in the Hall of Fame regardless of his brief time in Metallica.
Now, let's get ANVIL in there. Lips is God.

It's about time Mustaine stopped bitching. I mean, he was in the band for barely a fraction of Metallica's history. Yea, it would've been great to of has Mustaine on an album, but the reason he wasn't was his own fault.
Megadeth and Metallica have both done great things for Heavy Metal. Megadeth went on to have a bunch of success, like Metallica. Even though Metallica had a little more. Would've Metallica been greater with Mustaine rather then Newsted? Probably, but we'll never know.

Changed? In what sense do you mean changed? Are you suggesting that Cliff would have led them into that same fucking lame direction they went from the Black album on? Cliff was the reason they were able to be the cutting-edge band they were through the eighties. His musical nous (arguably also Mustaine's) inspired that.
I only hope you are one of the poor fucks that came on board during the '90s or later and doesn't know better. Otherwise you should take a good long hard look at yourself. Metallica didn't necessarily write bad music during that period, god knows enough people bought those shitty albums, but they did manage to alienate all those people who supported them because they believed that they were the band to take metal in a direction that others could only follow.
We expected that they would continue to set the standard for metal, but they didn't. They sold out to a crowd that had nothing to do with anything they supposedly stood for. For proof of this I ask that you get yourself a copy of the Cliff 'Em All video; where they proudly announce that they don't need to make video clips for their songs to get the point of their music across.
Metallica never used to have to do this, but now they apparently do.
Why?
Because they are milking a reputation they developed, and rightly deserved, through the '80s for all it's worth and are doing nothing but making a mockery of all of us who stood out the front of record stores at 6am to buy their new album back in a time when their new album was worth buying.
Fuck you, fuck Lars, and fuck the rest of Metallica for that matter. Justify them all you want, but make sure you have some fucking good reasons for doing so.

Mustaine always copied what Metallica did, including stylistic changes and image shifts. His whole carreer was built around the achievements of Metallica.
It's a good thing he ackowledges the merits of his former band but I highly doubt his will get into this silly "hall of fame". Both bands did really good things but one undoubtly outclassed the other.
If there's no Mustaine onstage, then there should be no Trujillo either...

i am sooooooo sick of the Metallica Megadeth posts. What happened 25+ years ago is meaningless at this point.
Nice of Dave to be pc about the subject.
In my opinion, James is very wrong about Dave not belonging up on the stage..... thinking of the songs Dave wrote and Metallica ended up using after being asked not to use. This gives Dave some credit as well all know. I am thankful for the guys booting Dave, now we have Megadeth.

I'm a Megadeth fan and all but Dave DID NOT play on ANY Metallica Records...... he was in the band for less than 1 year!!!! Dave did he tour on Kill 'Em All, or since
Dave IS to this day acknowledged for his involvement in Metallica, and WAS credited for his contributions to Metallica songs.....key word: CONTRIBUTIONS ....because Dave did NOT write the songs
"You're considered for the Hall 25 years after your first recording, not after you formed." .....what part of that is hard to understand?? Dave WAS NOT in the band for over 25 years....and that is what the Rock 'N' Roll hall of Fame is about!!!

I sometimes struggle to believe some of the crap written about Metallica. 'You cannot find ANY reason to justify the BETRAYAL and the TREASON they committed against us ol' 80s thrashers' lol.
It's pathetic that not liking the musical direction they've taken on a few albums has such a seemingly detrimental effect on your mental health. It's entertainment and it's art. They can play however they want.
If you go to a restaraunt you used to like and get served a dish you don't like, you can either shrug it off and put it down to experience, or you just vote with your wallet. You don't spend your life trolling on messageboards about that restaraunt. I'd challenge you go to a Metallica show, chug a few beers, sing along, have a headbang, and not enjoy yourselves, you sour old gits!

Dave have been the better songwriter from the beginning and especialy the last 20 years. and saying Megadeth just followed Metallica is just stupid, they nothing like Metallica in any way realy. much faster and heavier

I dig. Is yes there was bad blood...Dave was ousted from the group..but then there were two metal groups instead of 1. So I figure it's a win win situation for a music fan who digs both bands, such as myself.

The only song Metallica was asked not to use was Mechanix. They changed it and made it into Four Horsemen. So, stop kidding yourself.

hehe yea maybe not that much grown up, but you start to see more and more when you get older that people dont change that much realy, unless they are in front of their kids or something, but other then that most people are pretty much the same they used to be. but its great that all these old bands are coming back together and its great just to see bands like Megadeth and Metallica to still be around and lets just hope they will be for some time more, even thought im not a big Metallica fan, but still its good to have these bands around to show the younger ones how to do it!

deserves to be inducted with Metallica?????
Former guitarist Brad Parker aka Damien Phillips, who played one show with them during the Mustaine days(James didn't want to play guitar at the time, so they were a 5 piece for 1 show). He may not have written any songs with Metallica, but he did wear mascara and so did Metallica during the Load/ReLoad days. So his influence came later on.

Mustaine is clearly avoiding another situation where they can take another good dig at him. I can see Jaymz and Lars mentioning Dave when accepting the award "if it wasn't for you (referring to kicking his sorry drunk ass out of the band) we might have never made it up here", with both of them snickering afterward.
Should Dave be acknowledged for his contributions? Of course. Should he be up there on stage with Metallica accepting an award? No.
Dave will get there on his own someday, but I don't think there will be a stage big enough to hold the massive revolving door that is otherwise known as Megadeth. As for burying the hatchet with Metallica, that will never happen. He'll be slamming them in the press again soon enough.

Hahaha!! I can't stop laughing at this! For...like, how many years now has Mustaine been badmouthing and trashing Metallica? "Lars Ulrich" this, "Lars Ulrich" that. I remember going to see Megadeth 2 years ago, and all Mustaine did on stage was stick up his middle finger the whole time shouting "Fuck Metallica!" It's just typical Dave Mustaine behavior. Two-faced, lying motherfucker who can't keep his band lineups stable. QUIT, Dave! That's your best bet

ok, I just read elsewhere, even though Dave Mustaine won't be there, they will be having Ron McGovney (1st bassist) there??
If it's true that Mustaine turned them down, he's an ass.
They could have had a REAL, 100% ORIGINAL METALLICA REUNION!
Dave had something to do with the foundation & creation of this band, and should show up and take his bow....
Enough with the bitter bullshit.
KUDOS to Metallica for putting aside the b.s. and inviting him.
HEY DAVE MUSTAINE - BE A FUCKIN' MAN and SHOW UP!
What a pussy.
I think it's cool that Cliff Burton's dad will be there for his son, way cool.
I also think that it's more than appropriate to jam with Newsted.
I hope they don't give Trujillo the boot and re-hire Jason... would be a HUGE mistake...HUGE.
Trujillo is 10x the bassist that Newsted is... just watch the Ozzy live footage with Jason....horrible.
But again... Dave Mustaine is a STRAIGHT OUT PUSSY if he was actually invited but refused.
