METALLICA's LARS ULRICH: I Downloaded 'Death Magnetic' Illegally - Mar. 3, 2009
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich, who angered many fans by waging a high-profile battle with Napster in 2000 over illegal music downloading, admitted in a recent interview that he has also used the Internet to obtain a full album's worth of music without paying for it. "I sat there myself and downloaded [METALLICA's latest CD] 'Death Magnetic' [illegally] from the Internet just to try it," he told Eddie Trunk of VH1 Classic's series "That Metal Show". "I was like, 'Wow, this is how it works.' I figured if there is anybody that has a right to download 'Death Magnetic' for free, it's me. I sat there one night at my house with about six of my friends and a bottle of wine. And what was it called?! [Trying to think of the name of the file-sharing client he used to download the album] We found it — this was like two or three days after ['Death Magnetic'] leaked. I was like, 'You know what? I've gotta try this.' So we sat there, and thirty minutes later, I had 'Death Magnetic' in my computer. It was kind of bizarre."

In a 2003 interview with Launch, Lars about the band's battle with Napster, "Most of the time, it's like a bad dream, like what the fuck was that? [Several] years later, it's like did that really happen? We went from being somewhat well-respected, well-liked, and then I woke up one day and all of a sudden I was the most hated man in rock 'n' roll. It was like, huh? Me? What did I do wrong? I'm one of the good guys. That was all kind of weird. If you look at our history, we've always been pretty protective of our own shit. When anybody got too close or fucked with our shit, we always took action. In retrospect, I'm proud of what we did, I really felt sideswiped on that one. In my own little ignorant world, I didn't see it coming. I was completely ignorant and unaware of the magnitude of this issue for people. I was just sitting there in my own little selfish world going, 'I'm going to protect METALLICA. Don't fuck with METALLICA.' Then (explosion sound), 'You're pro-record company, you're greedy!' I'm not pro-record company. We invented being anti-record company. We told our record company to go fuck themselves before anyone else. Stop. It was a very surreal thing, because it was so hard to connect what I read about myself and METALLICA, it was so abstract to what was on my radar about my own reality. People going, 'You're a really greedy little man.' It was like, what are you talking about? We've been giving shit away for years. We want to be the ones giving it away, not someone else. I'm proud of the stance we took. It was a very tough time. It was a much tougher time, because in the middle of that you have to put your best game face on. It was difficult. A lot of that shit hurt and it was very bewildering because it was difficult to connect it to your own reality. For better or worse, it got a good debate started. In retrospect, I'm not claiming any sort of victory — who gives a shit about that? — I think more people are starting to realize, not that we were right, but this is an issue that is changing the face of everything that is going on. Not only the music world, but the film world is next. What better way to deal with it than at least educate people about it. If nothing else, I look back at the six months in 2000 as the first step in the education."

Because I illegally downloaded 'Death Magnetic' also after purchasing the retail album, except I got the properly mixed Guitar Hero version that doesn't sound like Lars wiping his ass with an old hard drive.

Now all my friends are pissed because the record they paid for sounds like shit through their high-end stereos and headphones while mine sounds fantastic on a clock radio. Getting the CORRECT version is the best move I've made.

I have to give it to Lars though for at least admitting that he was ignorant back then. He almost single-handedly made Metallica the laughing stock of the music world and a serious target for piracy.

Following it up with St. Anger was almost the final nail in the coffin.

Oh well. I like Death Magnetic and I paid for one copy and paid a fucking fortune on top of that to see them in concert a few weeks back... So... They've gotten more than my money's worth.

I hate to be a doom and gloomer, but the days of selling Diamond-status albums are over. For good.

People who think that they should be able to download any song they want for free are just a bunch of theives and, they would steal anything. you cant trust a theif. Its no different than walking into a store and shoplifting. On one hand you have the corperate world that has fucked everyone and then you have a bunch of theives who are no different and if they had the chance they would fuck everyone as much as the big corperations they hate so much. No wonder the country is screwed.

That being said, Radiohead and Reznor are visionaries when it comes to the new age of music distribution, but it still won't help the up-and-coming bands of the future. With myspace getting fucked by facebook, who knows what will happen to all the unsigned bands now.

You need to consider the fact that Metallica would have to be relevant for that many people to give a crap about them to even post.

For those that think illegal downloading is bad - well it's not 'right' because you are stealing but...

Take into account that the 15.99 you pay for the CD retail only about 50 cents go to the artists and the rest the label takes. Then when airplay royalties and such come into play the labels take damn near every penny.

The only way bands make money now is to tour and sell merchandise. They don't make squat off their albums anymore thanks to people continuing to support the labels and more so the RIAA.

It's not right to download but so long as the RIAA (who's members are ONLY the record labels - NOT ONE SINGLE ARTIST IS A MEMBER OF THE RIAA) exists I will download illegally until they are gone. Screw the RIAA and screw the monopoly of the Big 3 Record Labels.

Viva La Bittorrent!

hhhhhhmmmmmm. how much money did the record label advance for the studio time? What about the cost of promotion of that release? Pictures? Design? Manufacturing and distribution also cost money. Touring is another thing that costs. People know what they're getting into when they sign that record contract. They sign away some of the publishing (for a certain amount of time) to pay back that big ass advance. So basically you're screwing over the artist. The record label will get there money back one way or another. Either from the artist (even if they quit the music bizz) or as a tax write off.

Facts:

Lars didn't "sue his fans"
His fans bought their albums, that's why every one went several times platinum, despite illegal downloading.

Metallica are not against "tape trading"/traditional bootlegging
They got where they were through people trading their demos & live shows - they still allow people to record their shows but they also provide desk quality recordings of every show they play which I am not sure of any other band which does this.

Downloading metallica's albums will not destroy them.
They make money from every tour they do, and will continue to do so. They release albums because they've still got the desire to try to write decent music, sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn't but I can't deny that I respect them for not simply touring off the first 3 albums.

Downloading hurts smaller bands - as has been said by a few people above - if it affects mid-large sized bands then it's going to hurt smaller bands even more - this means that less bands make it & less bands can afford the support from the record companies.

I like DM. LOAD/RELOAD were a direction that shouldn't have happened for them...then again, it may be that misdirection they needed to realize where they should have been. None the less, if those two albums didn't exist, I feel that St. Anger and DM would have been the next logical steps in the evolution.

The problem with some fans is that they think that nothing should change with some of these bands and they can't face the reality that everything changes because they get older. Face it...James can't scream like he used to. Slowing down some means they can speed up. You play fast all the time, where can you go?

As for the Napster thing....I honestly don't care. That had to happen because the music industry was eventually going to have to rethink and rebuild itself as the old model circles the drain. Technology is cheaper and distribution is much more accessible. Bands can record at home, distribute through the web and own their publishing rights. It may take longer to go from working local band to national touring act, but doing it on your own is easier now than it was 20 years ago. But I digress.

@Ace96: The RIAA is laying people off...I can see it failing within the year.

Maybe not so much for bands like Metallica, but Record sales are important when it comes to touring, especially for the smaller, lesser known bands. Venues and promoters look at record sales as a sign of tickets sales. If the band is selling well then they expect a packed venue, etc. It's one of the things they look at as far as the bands popularity and success.

A band manager can't go to a promoter or venue and ask for a significant amount of money for the show if the band isn't selling cd's. The promoter/venue might ask, "How well is their latest or last album selling and if everyone is downloading the cd then the manager can't say some stupid shit like "Well we've only sold 500 cd's but a million people are downloading it for free.." That's not how it works. If you're downloading every album you own for free, you're screwing your favorite band that can barely pay for gas for their shitty little bread-box econoline van that they have to tour the country with and often times sleep in. Way to go!

So you think bands make all this money by touring and merch? Hmmm. For starters, Ticketmaster fucks the bands and record labels harder and rawer then they do us, seeing as they are taking much larger fees for the privelige of selling the tickets or letting them play in their venues. Next, like has been brought up before, the record labels will take every dime that is left until the costs of recording have been payed for. Then, the crew has to be paid. As for the merch, since it isn't free to make, and most bands don't happen to own their own sweatshop in Taiwan, they usually have to borrow money to get the merch made. From where? Yep, the label sunshine. And the label is going to get their money first. Because of all of this, you now end up getting more package tours like Cruefest and destination festivals like Rock On The Range. Plus, many bands have just decided to stop playing the States, because they can get better deals to do Europe. Look at Rage, Limp Bizkit, Faith No More and Alter Bridge. Either they are playing far fewer stateside shows (7 in the last three years for Rage and 12 on Alter Bridge's last tour), or just deciding to forego the states altogether. When was the last affordable major rock tour that played sheds or arenas and you got only 2 bands? Take away Metallica, AC/DC, Kid Rock and Tool and you have no one. Every other bands is either touring as part of a larger package or playing clubs. So now, you have a smaller pie that more are eating from. Want to fix it? start buying cd's again, plain and simple.

I'm a guy that loves the artwork, the full package (I actually read the liner notes), but music comes first. Like the new Thornley. I got the iTunes version because it had the bonus track, but I would have liked the physical copy as well (especially since the artwork was the guy who did many of those trippy Pink Floyd covers). But Tiny Pictures AIN'T worth buying two. It's barely even worth ONE. I hate being punished for wanting to actually go to the store to get a copy of the cd instead of digital. But I guess that's the age we're in.

sure, illegal downloading is wrong, but instead of complaining about people doing it and trying to stop it, the record companies should have seen this coming and tried to make it work. they have spent 10+ years trying to stop illegal downloading, when they could have been spending those years figuring out how to get it to work. people want their music in a different way theses days, just as when people changed from vinyl to cd and now cd to mp3. they are simply trying to keep a dying idea afloat, when they should let it die. just like the automobile industry.

Not only did I download the retail cd illegally, I also stole my physical CD from Wal-Mart. I also used illegally ripped shitty stems from a video game to do Rick and his teams jobs for them.

That's how albums are made in 2009.

2 be honest record sales dont mean a hell of a lot monetarily for smaller bands.....most of the money they make is from touring and merch ....do you really think that lets say this metal band sells like 2000 albums their first week...is gonna sell quadruple that or more if there was no downloading....i really dont think so...they might sell a little more but not enough to really mean anything....downloading doesnt do shit other than get your music 2 more people who might actually buy your album if they like it or go to a concert as well

Someone made a point about using the bit torrent sites for identity theft. Actually there is something you can do that is hell of lot more fun.

First, you log onto the site and "share" a song file that has a program that allows you to capture the email and account info of the person who downloads it.

Next, you have the ability to use his account and e-mail for whatever you want. Usually my hacker buddies where just into being smartasses. They would use these poor saps accounts to upload bullshit files that contained 2 or 3 seconds of a track in an endless loop or horribly loud feedback or even the Jeporady theme. We could even use their e-mail account to spam the shit out of every Yahoo username beginning with the letter "M".

Now I know this is annoying as hell, and made them assholes, but look at it this way. The software being used COULD have been used to extract their online banking passwords or things a hell of a lot more dangerous. I think that at least 10-20% of teh Spam you receive in your e-mail actually unwittingly comes from people who steal music online. So keep it up!

I sure as hell did not download Death Magnetic, but I did enjoy downloading Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets!

I am more guilty of downloading then a lot of people I know, but it's mostly well known bands, I do like to buy the albums of local/minor bands.

And T-Boner, your a fagmonster. Axl sucks wiener.

SALES mean NOTHING to begin with, but since you brought it up:

The album is the band's fifth consecutive studio album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, making Metallica the first band ever to achieve five consecutive number one debuts.[3]

Death Magnetic debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 490,000 copies in just three days of availability.[51] It is the band's fifth consecutive studio album to debut at number one, making Metallica the first and only band with the most consecutive studio album releases to debut at number one. The album also had the highest first week sales of any Metallica album since 1996's Load.[52][3]

According to Billboard Magazine, in the September 27, 2008 issue, Death Magnetic landed at number one on the following ten charts: Billboard Top 200, Billboard Comprehensive Albums, Top Rock Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Modern Rock/Alternative Albums, Top Digital Albums, Top Internet Albums, Top European Albums, Tastemakers, and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks ("The Day That Never Comes").[53] The album stayed at number one for three consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200. Internationally, the album peaked at number one in 34 countries, including Ireland, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.[54]

According to The Rock (a New Zealand radio station) the album became platinum on the first day of its release in New Zealand.[citation needed] In addition, nearly 60,000 copies were sold digitally, making it debut at number one on the Digital Album chart.[55] The album debuted at number one in the official United Kingdom albums chart after just three days of availability, selling 75,164 copies. The album remained at number one for two weeks and has sold over 150,000 copies to date.[56] In Canada, Death Magnetic was the number one album for four consecutive weeks, bringing its total sales of 240,000 units sold and became certified 3x platinum.[57]

In Australia, Death Magnetic was the fastest selling album of 2008, selling 55,877 copies in its first full week of release.[58] Death Magnetic was Australia's highest-selling record in one week since Australian Idol winner Damien Leith's The Winner's Journey, in December 2006.[59] The same success was repeated in Germany, where Death Magnetic has become the fastest selling album of 2008. Within the first three days of the album's release, Death Magnetic sold over 100,000 copies and has been certified platinum.[60] According to reports, Death Magnetic is outselling competitors in Russia and Turkey, two countries which don't have an official album chart.[61]

In Finland, during the second week of January 2009, Death Magnetic jumped eighteen spots back up to number one on that country's album charts within one week.[62]

Certification
Death Magnetic was certified platinum (1,000,000 units sold) by the RIAA on October 24, 2008.[63] (Little more than one month after it was released).

Yeah a real flop :)

Think about that pile of shit your worship so much, Chinese Crapocracy, 500.000 copies sold, that's 500.000 LESS than Metallica and you braindead glam fans were going on and on about how it was gonna "destroy rap" and sell "BILLIONS". And to think there are RAP influences on that ridiculous release. Now THAT is funny.

Now watch the new Manson crapola flop like no album has ever before.

Trends come and go, real bands have longevity.

Great Lars, now you know how to download. Next step, learn how to play drum without sucking and while you're at it, learn how to make a decent album!!!! In both cases, i suggest listening to some Slayer.

Spend less time in front of your miror and more time on the drum kit!!

Just sayin'

Why is everyone trying to cut Lars down?
he has been in the music industry for about twenty years now, so he must be doing something right.
if you think you can do better than metallica, then you gotta be dreamin, i think that all you losers that hate metallica, wait, why are you even on this post? I'm pretty sure if you hate something, just ignore it, aka, leave Metallica alone and listen to some of your own music!
