PANTERA Box Set In The Works - Mar. 15, 2009
During an appearance on the March 6 edition of "The Jim Rome Show" (one of the nation's premiere sports radio talk shows), DOWN/ex-PANTERA bassist Rex Brown confirmed that a PANTERA box set is in the works. According to Rex, the set will consist of much more than a simple repackaging of the existing CDs.

You can listen to a portion of the interview below.

PANTERA's career overview CD, "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits!" (Elektra/Rhino), was certified platinum on January 13, 2006 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments in excess of one million copies in the U.S. The band's classic "Vulgar Display of Power" (Elektra) album was certified double-platinum in 2004, signifying shipments of more than 2,000,000 units in the U.S. since its February 25, 1992 release.

Rhino Video in April 2006 released PANTERA's "3 Vulgar Videos From Hell" — a three-DVD set featuring all the band's videos as well as live footage shot during the Monsters of Rock gig in Moscow. Originally released on DVD in 1999, this version features the same content with improved menus and all-new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. In fact, it is the first PANTERA release ever in 5.1 Surround Sound. It features: "Cowboys From Hell The Videos", "Vulgar Video", "3 Watch It Go", and "Pantera Live From Monsters of Rock In Moscow".

Dimebag Darrell was co-founder and lead guitarist for PANTERA. When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Dimebag and his brother Vinnie Paul formed DAMAGEPLAN. On Dec. 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.

I will definitely pick this up, I got to see Pantera twice in the 90's and they really put on such a good show (when Phil was NOT too fucked up to say anything intelligent) when they were on. I think this is a great way to remember the legacy of Pantera without any of the bullshit drama that has become synonymous with the band in the last 5 years or so.

About the box set, it all depends on what's in it. I own all albums except for the ones from the 80s. I hope they have a dvd with actual live footage and not just backstage/on the road/party any\tics. This band used to be my favorite, now I think Down is far superior.

That reminds me of the movie, it was either Smoking Aces or Slow Burn but anyways they were talking about someone trying to auction off Oprah Winfrey's garbage from a hotel room lol. Seriously though, who would want a cigarette butt from a tour? That is very creepy, it'd be one thing if it was like a guitar pick, drum stick, microphone, but a cigarette butt, might as well auction off someone's hair.

Psst hey Rex its

down-nola.net not down/nola.net, rexbrown.net doesnt even work.

and this box set is a little fishy, cuz I know that Vinnie isn't talking to Phil and it in the interview sounded like he isn't talking to Rex so who's in charge? From the looks of Vinnie these days looks like the only person he is keeping in contact with is Krispy Kreme. Instead of listing shit on ebay maybe he should sign up for a gym membership.

I have to agree, release everything on it. Not just bits and pieces... everything. From their underground Glam Rock/Metal 80's releases all the way up to their major label Groove Metal releases, to all their B-sides and one-offs and even demo's (like the CFH Demo). Everything. Even if it cost $300 I'd buy it.

A live dvd would be killer too, I have a bunch of bootlegs on cd.

I'll buy this as long as Rita a.k.a "The Yoko Ono" of metal doesn't have anything to do with it. I don't know of too many unreleased Pantera songs out there that haven't already seen the light of day. I think it would be kinda cool to have all the pre-Phil albums on there. I'm hoping that "Avoid the Light" from the dracula 2000 cd is on there as well.I think the last song on the box set without a doubt should be the very last song from the last concert Pantera played together.

As a comletist and collector, I would like to see just a box set of their 4 first albums. This box will consist of demo, outtakes, original versions, rare live, one-offs, covers and guest performances. What else could there be? Sure, Dime put a lot of demos down while in the crapper, we all know that story. There will probably be a live DVD since the videos are already out there. I'm sure details are soon to follow and another debate will ensue.

Reading these posts, it seems like Pantera (except Phil) is off limits for bashing. Why is this? Is it the death of Dime? Hell, if (insert your favorite band here) released a box set everybody comes out of the wood work to put them down in one way or another.

Does anybody here think Pantera sucks? I just find it very interesting that this band gets put on a pedestal, while every other band gets the shaft for little or no reason.

I don't care if this is a cash grab for the record companies, Vinnie, or even Rita.

It brings a smile to my face to know that the legacy of the best metal band in history is still alive and well.

I hope that one day Phil and Vinnie will, publically or not, come together and have a shot for their past and for Dime.
That live video from their last show says it all. Pantera are still the best metal band.
