HAMMETT Says JASON NEWSTED Will 'Most Likely' Perform With METALLICA At ROCK HALL Induction - Mar. 21, 2009
Flea of the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS will induct METALLICA at the sold-out Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony Saturday, April 4, at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.

"It's cool that he's not in a heavy metal band but is a well-respected musician you might not expect," METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett told Billboard.com. Former bassist Jason Newsted will join the band that night and will "most likely" perform with the group," Hammett told About.com. "He put in 14 years with METALLICA, so I think there's no reason for him not to be there," he said. Drummer Lars Ulrich told Billboard.com that the evening "will be like a family reunion — a whole big pile of people, lots of friends."

The event will be televised live on Fuse and available online at www.fuse.tv.

Joining the band as inductees are guitar legend JEFF BECK, RUN-DMC, BOBBY WOMACK, and LITTLE ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS.

METALLICA are first-time nominees, with the nomination coming 25 years after the release of the band's 1983 debut album, "Kill 'Em All". An act must be recording for a quarter century in order to be eligible.

Frontman James Hetfield tells EW.com, "We're very honored to be recognized. There's a whole genre around us that hopefully we can invite through the door. Hopefully there will be recognition for some of the bands that have changed music and changed people’s lives. That's what I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be about. There are certainly a lot of bands that aren't in there that I can't believe aren't: MOTÖRHEAD, RUSH, JUDAS PRIEST, DEEP PURPLE. But for us to be in there, hopefully we can bring some awareness to heavy stuff."

Jason has every right to be there. Good on Metallica for doing the right thing. I also thought it was cool as fuck for them to invite Dave Mustaine. Finally acknowlodging his contribution to Metallica in the early days. Him declining was just rude. Maybe they could have cleared the air once and for all, jammed together live, and maybe, just MAYBE he could have joined them on a new cd and tour in the future. That would have have been sweet.

As big of a fan of Newsted that I was, it is great that he is invited since he paid his dues with the band.

However, I do not think he should perform with the band. He is not their bassist anymore.

I cannot shake the feeling that Metallica are dreadful Heavy Metal role models.
They give the impression that the musical genre, the fans and musicians even the very words Heavy Metal are something they are ashamed of and wish to distance themselves from.
It is the loyalty and good will of true Heavy Metal fans that has got them where they are.
Maybe such devotion has been truly misplaced.

What if 'Tallica decides to permanently rehire Jasonic? This is bad news for Robert Trujillo. This dude is finally getting paid after laboring away for slave wages for all those years with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, and now this Hall of Fame BS is compromising his position with the band.

cool. newstead was a big part of that band for a long time, and for those of us who are about 30 years old, chances are he was the first bass player we saw with metallica, and did a great job of helping the band move forward while all the while paying great homage to cliff burton.

i hope they bring some of cliff's family along for the ceremonies. god knows he deserves to be a big part of the festivities .

all that being said, r&r hall of shame is a joke, but maybe like hetfield said, this can open the door for other deserving bands to be included, like ALL THE BANDS THAT INFLUENCED metallica.

Put down the crackpipe dude. Rob is WAY better than Jason in Metallica. Jason was awesome on the 1st Flotsam & Jetsam album, but all he did with Metallica was basic play with a pick root note crap.
He should've kept his mouth shut, stayed and got payed.

Metallica invited Mustaine only after James Hetfield had publicly stated that he would not invite Mustaine and did not consider Mustaine's contribution to Metallica important enough for him to be invited. I guess the fact that Hetfield's remarks about Mustaine got a lot of negative reactions made him change his mind and decide to invite Mustaine after all. But who, except for delusional Metallica fangirls such as SchecterShredder, can blame Mustaine for declining the invitation after first having to read in the press that Hetfield doesn't really want him there? In my opinion, the fact that Dave Mustaine still has the courtesy to congratulate Metallica on their induction into the Hall Of Fame, makes him the bigger man in this case.

Jason Newsted obviously should also present at the ceremony, and Megadeth should be inducted into the Hall Of Fame on the basis of their own achievements in a couple of years as well.

It would be interesting if Jason came to play with them. He and Rob are both amazing. Jason was the one who left Metallica; they did not fire him...so its unlikely that they would "hire him back" because he was the one who left, it'd doubtful that he would even accept if they did ask him to return.

Some of you are getting the words "invited" and "inducted" mixed up. Dave Mustaine is not being INDUCTED into the rock & roll hall of fame with Metallica, however, Metallica did invite him to the pre-party the day before, and to the actual ceremony where they are being inducted. But Dave is not being inducted along side of them - they simply invited him to the event.

The fact that Hetfield has publicly said there's other artists that belong in there like Motorhead,Maiden,Priest, etc. says alot about him But casts a bigger spotlight on the sham that the "Hall" actually is. Metal has been a valid art form for quite some time and to snub all those bands, metal and otherwise is a crock of shit. Judas Priest has been around for 40 fucking years. There really should be a whole other building or at least wing dedicated to metal.

They invited Mustaine to the ceremony as their guest. They did not invite to participate in the event. He would have sitting at a table out in the crowd. I agree with Hetfield's reasoning for saying Dave wouldn't be on stage with them.

As for the Jason/Robert thing: I'm sure they'll both be up there for the induction and I wouldn't be surprised to see them both playing with the band, either taking turns or playing at the same time. Metallica performed with Flea on bass recently, along with Rob. If you've ever seen a HOF induction, it's not unusual at all for the performances to have weird line ups, or extra musicians from other bands performing with them. Rob's not in jeopardy of losing his job. I'm sure Jason doesn't want the job back. Regarding the comment that Jason should have kept his mouth shut and gotten paid: that dude has enough money for the rest of his life.

Jason should be there. He is part of Metallica it's like any other band that has lost members. No matter how many new faces the band in your mind is the band that you seen for the first time. Jason spent to many years with them to be forgotten. The only reason most of us know of Cliff is because the rest of the band has mentioned him. There were no viideos back then and Metallica still was not known as well as they are now. Robert is a great bass player but it still doesn't seem right when you see them play live.

Mustaine helped the boys get started, that is for sure. A little of him was also in Ride the Lightning. True Metallica fans, for the most part, feel that Puppets is the best album. Mustaine had nothing to do with it. Hammett had taken over by then so to say that Metallica wouldn' be here, or where they are at, if it were not for him, well, your talking out of your a$$e$!!! And to the one who said the only reason we know about Cliff is because the band has mentioned him before..........., WHAT?? boardpop, your whats called a newbee 'Tallica fan. For us who love the band and have since BEFORE the Black album, DO NOT insult us. One of the reasons that Puppets is the best is because of Cliff. The best bassist I have ever seen, hands down. Try listening to the early albums and you WILL agree. Metallica has changed metal as much as any other band has. Jason, man, that dude can head bang like crazy. As far as a bassist, nothing more than average. Rob is better and has a cleaner sound. He does not fit into the band?? That is crazy. The best metal album Metallica has put in years and you can actually here his bass yelling at you. Jason made the decision to walk. He deserves to be there with the rest because the "popular" years he was the bassist, but what did he really do? Not much. Average bass. Nothing more. Congrats to the band, wish I could be there to see it. Peace-DMCIII
