KIRK HAMMETT Confirms JASON NEWSTED Will Perform With METALLICA At ROCK HALL Induction
- Mar. 25, 2009
|
|
METALLICA is less than two weeks away from its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the band has confirmed that former bassist Jason Newsted will attend the ceremony. Guitarist Kirk Hammett also told The Pulse of Radio that Newsted will perform with the group at the event as well. " Jason Newsted will be there, and he will be playing with us at one point," he said. "We went as a band when BLACK SABBATH was being inducted, and at that time BLONDIE was also being inducted that night. And there was so many politics and so much drama that, you know, we collectively said to each other, 'We don't want any of that,' because it kind of, it puts a really bad, sour note on the whole celebration itself." Hammett also told The Pulse of Radio that the band is in the midst of deciding what songs it will play at the ceremony. The Hall of Fame induction will take place on April 4 at the Hall's Public Auditorium in Cleveland. METALLICA will be inducted by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea. METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich spoke with the Los Angeles Times about several topics, including whether or not the band needs a major label to move forward with its career now that its contract with Warner Bros. Records is done. Ulrich replied, "Without offending any of the good people from the record company in the room, no . . .We're doing a bunch of shows with Trent ( Reznor, NINE INCH NAILS) this summer in Europe. I look forward to sitting down and talking to him about what's on his radar." On the proposed merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, Ulrich said, "We haven't sold out to Live Nation, and we are certainly not planning on it. And we are very, very fortunate that we do not need what they offer to continue to be who we are." Ulrich added that the recent scandal involving Ticketmaster redirecting ticket buyers to its official "scalping" site was "very distasteful," adding, "It's just ripping people off. It's impure. So obviously I'd stand up and scream from every rooftop that I think that's . . . impure."

Great to here, Jason has played on more Metallica albums (though not their best) then Cliff or Robert and desevrs it just as much as Kirk or Robert. Jason is a class act and this is a very cool gesture from metallica. I wonder if Cliffs parents will be going

Jason made a huge contribution to Metallica, and as we know since he left, sacrificed opportunities to do his own thing (and yes, i'm certainly aware that he was very well compensated for his 'sacrifice')! But it would've been lame to not have him there. Don't see why there would be any static, they can play one song with Jason and one with Rob, or just have two bassists? These things are kind of like jam sessions anyway, so if it doesn't sound perfect, so what? Still think Mustaine should be there too though!

I think he should perform as well. Mustaine, Metal Church fill in, Jason.....all they need is a new Lars and the real metallica wouldn't even have to show up.

Although Trujillo is undeniably a far superior bassist from a technical perspective, Jason just had the no-compromise attitude down cold.
He lived, breathed and slept Metallica, devoted his life to the band, gave 100% onstage every night, headbanged himself into oblivion, and provided kickass backing vocals.
I'd love to see him back in the band, although I'm sure he's quite happy to do his own thing and count his many millions that he wisely saved up.

This will be great to have two bass players on stage. A reunion with Jason for the induction will be cool. But to those guys who disrespect Rob I will say that I prefer the way Metallica sounded live after 2004 year, than with Jason before. I found the sound more solid live than as it was with Jason, before.

Much respect to Jason. Just got done watching that trainwreck commonly referred to as 'Some Kind Of Moster', and man.. I just gotta say, James and Lars just seem like a couple totally fucked up dudes. Kind of like two battling women with PMS.
Who'd have thought Kirk Hammett would seem the most 'normal' of the remaining originals? Meanwhile, Newsted seems to be the only one that's totally normal.

...then the only way to do it is with everyone onstage at once. They've had Lemmy play with them live a few times, so having two bassists iisn't a new thing. Granted, Lemmy's sound makes him sound more like a third guitarist than a second bassist. Would be cool to have Jason and Rob play some Orion as a nod to Cliff.

Awesome to hear but I don't think it would be distasteful to Rob since Jason was a huge part of Metallica. And I'm not sure if Mustaine should be included since he didn't actually play on any albums. I know he was a part of the first songs, but still, never actually played on the albums. If I'm wrong, my bad.

Not a Metallica fan, but it is nice to see a band appreciate their induction in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and put the politics aside. Unlike, say, Van Halen, who pretty much disgraced themselves by not showing up at all. Oh there were those 2 former members who showed up and displayed some class. But enough about those VH idiots, congrats to Metallica on the induction. It is a huge honor and I'm glad to see that they understand that. Joey Ramone didn't get the opportunity to attend the his band's induction. Nor will Cliff Burton. Metallica seems to take a lot of BS from the posters here, but they have my repect, and I'm not even a fan.

1)Jason isn't coming back......so why keep saying Trujillo should be fired/kicked out/replaced/etc..... Wishful thinking?????
2)As much as I despise what Metallica have become.....them reaching out to Newsted and Mustaine shows some respect, so I will respect them. Well, James and Kirk at least.....still not too keen about Lars.
3)Jason is a really cool guy......met him after a show in '91. Not only did he stay and talk to the fans afterwards, but he signed some stuff for me and gave me some pointers on playing the bass. The others were nowhere to be found. Might have been because it was a hometown show for him in Detroit, but still......the guy is cool as fuck.
4)I could see Lars unplugging Jason's bass if they do a song off 'Justice'....seeing how they totally removed his bass from the actual recording!!!!!!

Like many, I grew up with Metallica from the early early stages. For me (in my opinion) Metallica became what they made fun of. It was almost like seeing your dream woman piss standing up facing the toilet.
I am happy for Jason now that he is out of the band, he can now express his musical side more. I don't care if his music doesn't sell, I bet he is a much happier musician.
