Family Of DEFTONES Bassist Asks For Donations For His Care - Mar. 25, 2009
According to The Pulse of Radio, the family of DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng has started a web site asking for donations to help pay for his medical costs. Cheng's insurance has reportedly refused to continue coverage for his ongoing treatment. Cheng remains in a coma and in a rehabilitation center following a car crash last November in Santa Clara, California. The site can be found at OneLoveForChi.com and the initial goal is to raise $20,000.

A message at the site reads, "This web site was created to help raise funds for Chi and his medical expenses. Any amount that you can donate is very much appreciated by the Cheng family! All funds raised are sent directly to Chi's mother, Jeanne Cheng, via PayPal.com . . . Together we can make a difference! This is our opportunity to give back to someone who has given us so much joy over the years through music."

A page at the site also gives fans the chance to leave a recorded message for Cheng.

The bassist has not regained consciousness since the accident, although he has shown recent signs of coming out of his coma, according to several blog posts at the site. A friend of the Cheng family who saw Cheng on Sunday (March 22) said that he called for his mother three times during the visit.

Cheng's brother posted that the insurance company had stopped paying for his treatment in mid-January. His mother posted that Cheng's house was returned to the bank and his dog was given away.

DEFTONES will perform at this year's Bamboozle Left festival, scheduled for April 4 and April 5 in Irvine, California. This will be the band's first show since Cheng's accident. Former QUICKSAND bass player Sergio Vega, an old friend of the band, will fill in for Cheng.

DEFTONES spent most of last year recording their sixth album, "Eros", although an official release date has not been finalized.

First of all, here is a crystal clear case of what's wrong with our health insurance system! And it says the INITIAL goal is to raise $20,000. Maybe his band mates can cover a chunk of that, but if you think that the Deftones are rich, you're fooling yourself!! this is a very sad story, and you guys are a bunch of insensitive jerks. if you don't like the band, don't comment!

"the world is full of people who are dying everyday"

----------------------

that is definitely true, but you can't blame them for doing what they're doing. if you were in his situation, you'd wish your family was trying to raise money for you, regardless of whether people liked it or not. if people decide to donate, that's their decision, and nobody elses.

the Deftones' haven't had a successful album based on record sales since White Pony. Adrenaline most likely went gold long after it was released meaning the profits didn't stream in and Around the Fur was the same. That album didn't catch on over-night or anything. If they sold a few hundred thousand copies of all of their albums during their first weeks of release, than maybe your comments about the band being rich would make sense. Since they've been losing money on their music over the most recent years(the costs of recording their albums must be through the roof since they take forever doing it and often times scrap what material they have and fire their producers), I doubt any of these guys have a ton of dough in the bank.

The real question is, why not do a huge benefit concert? There are plenty of people who would go see the Deftones and you could have Sevendust and Snot open or some shit and package it as a Nu-Metal tribute to Chi or whatever.

Nice, considerate people in this thread. May none of you ever experience the type of tragedy that Chi's family has been through. "Oh he's in a rock band, he must be rich." Tell that to Collective Soul, TLC, Toni Braxton, or any other musician who's been ripped off by their record label and left with jack shit.

Personally I would gladly donate to this cause, but unfortunately I'm broke as a joke right now and I don't get a bailout since I'm not some greedy, thieving, corporate scumbag.

Please answer this to me: If he/they had the money, why was his home given back to the bank and his dog given away? Because there's NO FUCKING MONEY LEFT.

Chino is the only dude who might have some cash, but to say he has 20k lying around is an absurd thought. They were in debt 400,000 to Warner during the Self Titled record and never recouped. Next tomes Saturday Night Wrist and it tanks. They make money on tour, but guess what? Tour manager, manager, management company, merch girl, merch guy, venue percentage from merch sales... Do you see what I'm getting at?

Honestly, I'm sure a lot of money earned from the Bamboozle show will go directly towards Chi and finishing the record, which will thus help support him even more. Deftones does NOT make the kind of money you'd think they do, don't fool yourselves. He's been in coma since November and obviously the insurance company cant afford him any more, and now look, just two months later, how hard it is to stay afloat. He lost his home and dog (and who knows what else) because he's broke. As someone who has had his life changed by Deftones, I feel it's my turn to help a brother out in his time of need and plan to donate once I get my next paycheck.

What saddens me the most is that fuck-ass bands like Korn and System of a Down aren't playing a benefit show to raise some motherfucking money. Play one fucking show at the Long Beach Arena and Chi will be set for at least a year. Now THAT makes me sad. Chi has touched the lives of so many musicians its insane. He has fueled probably ten thousand bands since he started playing bass. Where are they? Why arent they donating?

Just because someone is in a band it does not mean that they are rich. The fact is, any band at Deftones level don't make the big money. Everything that they make goes back into the band and to record albums. This is a costly business with a high overhead. There are no millions, fast cars or the 20 room house.

Chi Cheng is a sad story and how the insurance companies here in the United States treat people. Now for those of you who think that this funny or something that you don't care about rethink it when this happens to a band that you like, a friend or a family member. medical cost in the U.S. are a scam and can drain a bank account in no time. I was in an accident and even though I had a good insurance company, and the other drives was made to pay the bulk of my medical cost, I still had a hart tome paying off all the bills.

Now for those who think that Deftones should have more money: "Stop all the damn illegal downloads!" Maybe then bands like Deftones would be able to have money to take care of needs like theses.

Deftones are not loaded. They still sell OK but their shows (everyone but retards knows that bands/artists make money from touring, not their CDs!) are definitely not as big as they used to be. Korn pulled them along for Family Values 2006 but the tour after that was a small time gig. Hell, even back when Deftones were hot, they couldn't fill the university basketball arena down here (but Korn came along a few months later and the venue was sold out).

So I can understand why his family is asking for money to help pay his expenses. His insurance company dropped him and he doesn't have enough money to fend for himself. Sure, there are people in other countries dieing too but I could give a fuck about them. Sorry but I live in the U.S.A. where I want to focus on my family, my job, and my country. Why would I care about someone in another country? It is sad that the U.S. health care system has come to this (I would rather get sick in Canada) and that a musician can't even afford his own medical bills and he isn't even awake yet.

Hopefully the music industry (RIAA, other bands [I am surprised Korn hasn't stepped up], his record company, or something) throws a benefit or donates money. One last thing to all of you Blabbermouth crybabies who hammered him: fuck off! You could never understand Chi's current situation yet you act like total assholes sitting there in front of your computers. You motherfuckers deserve far worse than you will ever get.

I agree 100% with what you said. These guys haven't sold a million records since 2000 or so and who knows if they actually made good money from their labels, tours, etc. I am sure these guys have houses paid for and some decent cars they bought at their peak, but I doubt they all have thousands of dollars at their disposal.

Deftones should put together a benefit show for him. But I can understand why they haven't yet. What ever money being raised would go to medical bills and not help his family directly. Lets face facts the guys has been in a coma since Nov. the chances of him recovering is very slim and if he does chances are he would be a complete shell of himself. Though they won't say it I think they look at as if he passes on they can reach out to a lot heavy hitters to put on a huge benefit concert and set up his wife and child for along time.

Death is a hard thing to face when you love that someone. But all the money in the world cannot fix what is incurable. Prolong the physical with machines and that is all. Nature needs to take it's course. Perhaps any money raised could go towards research as to putting it to prolonging the inevitable end or the return of a shell of a person they once knew. People in coma that long have slim return rate w/o serious brain trauma. Life and Death are good nor evil and out of their hand. Best wishes finding peace.

My comment wasn't being insensitive. I'm just saying that the band has sold MILLIONS of albums/tickets over their career and it doesn't seem right that they are looking to the public for a handout when they can earn it themselves.

If it was my family I'd take a 2nd mortgage out on property, get a 2nd job, do WHATEVER i had to do before i took the easy way out.

Decapitated's situation was entirely different. I bought a shirt from them when they announced they were raising funds. Young, underground band and the drummer had a young child his now widow was trying to support.

But if the deftones, their label, COUNTLESS bands they have befriended and are looked up to by can't get together and raise the money then I don't think its right for them to ask others.

They've made some mistakes over the years (recording songs separatly and piecing them on the computer and fighting among the members) but if they really want to they can pull it together and make it happen for their friend without looking for a handout when the majority of people are having a hard enough time themselves financially.

If you won't donate to him, fine. But don't be insult to injury. I made a donation myself but I didn't do it because of the band or the status. I did it because he deserves to have help.

why does his family want money for him? could be because they are living in homes that are in his name or are using things that are in his name. the way it works is that when insurance runs out, the rehab or nursing home will be payed from the person's assests- starting with money and then moving to things like houses, land, cars, etc. Once he has no assets left he is then able to recieve medicaid which will cover cost for him but may not do it in an up scale rehab center. And it doesnt sound like he needs rehab at this time anyway- you cant rehab a man in a coma! He cant do physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy. well maybe some physical therapy to keep him from contracting but thats it and u dont need a rehab center for that. i hate to say it or think it but he probably belongs in a nursing home for the time being and i doubt after this long he will come out of his coma fully much less ever pick up a bass again.

the lesson to all this is buy long term care insurance.

I still wish him and his family the best and will always be a fan of his work. God Bless.
