|
|
Audio samples of all 10 tracks that appear on "The Devil You Know", the debut album from HEAVEN & HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Tony Iommi (guitar), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — are available for streaming at the German online record store JPC.de. The Best Buy-exclusive version of "The Devil You Know", the debut album from HEAVEN & HELL — the band featuring BLACK SABBATH members Tony Iommi (guitar), Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Geezer Butler (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) — will be available as a CD+DVD featuring a bonus disc containing 22 minutes of studio performances, interviews about making the new album, and other behind-the-scenes content. A couple of clips from the interview portion of the DVD can be viewed by following these links: Amazon.comRollingStone.comOne of the clips can also be viewed below. For more information, visit www.bestbuy.com. "The Devil You Know", featuring 10 soon-to-be-classic tracks from the Dio-fronted version of BLACK SABBATH, arrives in North America on April 28 from Rhino for a suggested list price of $18.98 (physical) and $9.99 (digital). Roadrunner Records last week announced the signing of HEAVEN & HELL for the territories of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America. HEAVEN & HELL's new single, "Bible Black", is available for streaming in its entirety below. The track begins with Tony Iommi on acoustic guitar behind Dio's plaintive wail before the rhythm shifts to a menacing stomp for the rest of this dark tale about a book of sinister scriptures. One of the first songs written for the album, Dio says it established a tone for the rest of the LP. "When you start off with a blockbuster like that, it makes the rest of the album so much easier because it gives you a benchmark to measure the other songs against." "The Devil You Know" track listing: 01. Atom And Evil (5:15) 02. Fear (4:48) 03. Bible Black (6:29) 04. Double The Pain (5:25) 05. Rock And Roll Angel (6:25) 06. The Turn Of The Screw (5:02) 07. will Vinny Appice please step down?
Can he drum any slower and more plodding?
With a decent drummer, this band would sound great.

Sounds fantastic. It actually sounds like these could have been recorded during the Dehumanzier sessions.
BUT--any metal album with so few up-tempo songs as this could be better.

That plodding "caveman"-style drumming is part of what makes gives Sabbath their sound.
Considering that Sabbath, in today's terms, had more of a doom/sludge/stoner sound.
Not saying that Vinnie is a great drummer...he's competent, but he merely plays what the music calls for. Bill Ward is a true drum god.

If Vinnie's drumming is too slow, maybe its because the riffs are too slow? Perhaps they need a different guitar player, you ingrates!

heard a few things i really liked, but there were more that i didn't think sounded all that great. have to wait a little while longer to find out for sure though. as for sounding like they came from the dehumanizer era of sabbath, i'd have to disagree (and i hope i'm wrong once i get to listen to it the whole way through). i personally would like to hear some more up-tempo songs and not the slow, dare i say, boring vocals i heard on the majority of those tracks. dio is capable of more vocally. dehumanizer was a good balance of slow and up-tempo songs. so far, this sounds a little too slow for me.

.....and it was painful just watching him.
He looked like he was an old man in pain drumming, and his movements were slow.
Not blaming him though, he is getting old and playing drums is not something easy when old.

Age doesn't have to slow a drummer down.
Look at Neil Peart or Buddy Rich...yeah, yeah, I know that those guys are in a class by themselves...
But honestly, drumming is not all about brute force and muscles. It requires finesse and dexterity, even at high tempos.
Hard-hitting drummers like Appice, Mikkey Dee, Dave Lombardo, etc. could certainly continue playing hard and fast into their 50s with proper technique, as long as they stay fit and healthy, and don't get slowed down by arthritis.

Listen to bill ward on the Heaven and Hell cd and his playing aint much different. it's because the music isnt sort of "swingin" like some old sabbath. Get a job losers and come to your senses . vinnie is a great drummer. better than anyone on here that bashes him im willing to bet...

the "doom metal" days of sabbath took a break when dio joined. his style was definitely more up-tempo and melodic than the ozzy years. you cannot call h&h and mob rules "doom metal". not even close. dehumanizer is a different story, but even that had it's up-tempo/melodic moments. the newer stuff sounds like an even further departure from the dio fronted sabbath we all grew up on. that's my problem with it. i don't expect this much "doom/sludge" from dio. it's not what dio era sabbath material is about.

Congratulations! You must have broken some kind of record!
Calling old Mighty Sabbath "boring hippie shit" is spectacularly stupid and ignorant, they are exactly the opposite exciting and if you knew anything you would know they were very much different from the hippies, but I guess you don't know that. They were one of the originators of heavy metal (the most important for me) and therefore one of the reasons for this forum even exist, not to mention this kind of music we all love.

sabbath came into existance because they themselves were sick of all the happy hippie music that kept coming out. there was nothing happy in the world around that point in time ie vietnam, etc, and they wanted to make music that reflected that.

On two different occasions, I've heard Ozzy:
1. Call Sabbath a "hippie band". 2. Say that Sabbath's sound was a reaction to happy hippie music based on how screwed up the world was.
Maybe he was taking different meds when he made those contradictory statements, or maybe Sharon screwed up the talking points when she was telling him what to say.
In any event, there actually ARE some "hippie-ish" musical elements and themes to Sabbath's early work...not too many, but they're there in any event. There are a lot of anti-war/anti-violence themes permeating Geezer's lyrics during that time.
Overall though, I think it would be monumentally stupid to categorize Sabbath as a hippie band.

sure, sabbath might have been into the whole drug scene, etc., but their lyrics were anything but typical hippie lyrics. they may have been preaching some of the same stuff (anti-war/violence) but in a much darker, evil sounding way. the hippie songs were much happier sounding, musically, and lyrically. sabbath came along and said "wait a minute! shit's fucked up. what's with all this happiness? we're going to tell it like it is. doom and gloom. and we're going to invent a new style of music to go along with it". to me, that qualifies as being anti-hippie.

i think i speak for most of the people on here calling for "faster" songs when i say that "faster" is what we are used to from dio's version of sabbath. we're not looking for speed metal, just stuff along the lines of what they've given us in the past.
songs like "t.v. crimes" and "die young" are great examples of faster sabbath songs. even the slower ones like "lonely is the word", and "sign of the southern cross" were more melodic and even bluesy. not doom metal at all.
i don't want an entire album of songs like "letters from earth", or "after all (the dead)". a couple songs like that is ok, but it's far from what we're used to from this lineup. that's all we want is what we've gotten in the past, and those songs, by far, fall into a "faster-not -so-much-doom-metal" catergory.

If the songs don't measure up, I can still listen to those two legends for 10 songs. That's weight in gold, right there >> Iommi & Butler together yet again...

.....people keep referring back to Dehumanizer, but his voice doesn't come close sounding as gritty, snarlling and powerful as it did on Dehumanizer. Of course, the guy is in his mid 60's, so maybe I should cut him some slack. Not impressed by the audio clips....hopefully when I listen to the entire disc my opinion will change.

samples sound very promising. Best thing is that while in the same vein, none of this sounds like a repeat/rehash of previous material---which is a feat in itself for any group of musicians that has been around this long and played together as much as these guys have. Yeah, there is no "Turn Up The Night," "Wishing Well," "Slipping Away," "Neon Knights" or "Die Young" in terms of really bouncing, uptempo songs it seems---would like to hear more of that style myself---but definitely sounds like some great stuff here.
I don't get the Vinny bashing either, but his style has definitely changed over the years and is not as punchy and dynamic as it was on Mob Rules and the first quartet of Dio Albums.
I also have just never loved the Iommi guitar sound from Dehumanizer on. It's definitely heavy, almost too much so, but just not as warm and organic sounding as on H&H & Mob Rules. But, hard to re-create that early 80's era sound, and probably would sound too thin to younger ears used to post 90's production.
At the end of the day, though, still just can't believe how incredible Dio sounds for his age. Can't soar like he did on Rainbow: On Stage, etc. anymore, but that's just impossible to expect. Yet he can still do so much without a hint of straining or reaching. Just remarkable. Can't wait for this release!

Since we are only days away from the 28th, I'll hold-off from the samples. I want this album to be as heavy and doomy as a fucking funeral. Songs like After All, Letters From Earth, Falling Off The Edge Of The World is what I want from this line-up and album. And I'm sure there will be enough up-tempo and melodic parts through out the entire album to keep the songs moving.
