IRON MAIDEN Singer On Being Britain's Biggest Heavy Metal Export - Apr. 10, 2009
Sophie Heawood of U.K.'s Times Online reports: What dawns on you, while watching IRON MAIDEN's live show, with its bombast and pyramids and 20ft robots, is how curiously lacking in aggression it is. Passion, yes, but it's not a fight. (A roadie tells me that he's been working for MAIDEN for 30 years and has never seen a punch-up.) Singer Bruce Dickinson agrees. "Oh no, it's not fighting. It's not a big f***-you at all. That's a pointless waste of energy. There is the potential on the one hand for rage and chaos, or passion and exultation on the other — and that's my choice: to try to levitate all these people who have come along. And I don't do it — they do it themselves — but you have to sort of provide the framework."

He says that he began performing in small clubs, and learnt from one of his childhood heroes, Ian Gillan, the DEEP PURPLE singer, how to bring your audience in. "I said to him one night, 'What's your secret?' And he said, 'Always look 'em in the eyes.' I thought, OK, I'll try it — but how far can I actually see? And I discovered it was entirely possible to look right the way to the back of a show and see somebody. I thought, well, if you grab that person, then everybody around them suddenly goes 'Wow' and you energize that whole area suddenly. I started working that — in the end you can do it in stadiums."

and Annihilator is Canada's biggest metal export and Metallica is the USA's biggest metal export. and Australia would be ACDC (they were coined metal in the day) and the Scorpions are the biggest German export.

Nicko McBrain fucking rules. Although you may think it's a waste of time to see this band play live, you should. You won't regret it.

I'd say Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are far more important UK metal exports than Maiden....

You just haven't lived unless you've seen Maiden at least once and sang at the top of your lungs "Run to the Hills!!!!" Still a blast after all these years.

The last 3 albums are excellent. Well produced and mature Metal. Their biography written by Mick Wall provides insight into how Maiden managed to survive. Harris had a very clear idea of what he wanted to do and went ahead and did it.

"Seems that these guys can't play speed material any more, so they need to water down the intensity of the music so that they can complete the entire gig without anybody suffering cardiac arrest. The self-proclaimed "Nicko McBrain" seems to be the worst offender..."

If Maiden can't play speed material anymore, how do you explain the tour they just finished? Trooper, Sanctuary, POTO, Aces High, Rime, Powerslave, the list goes on... I agree with the last album comment, as I never really got into that (will be giving it another chance shortly), but after seeing them twice on this last tour, no question they still have it... And Nicko not using a double bass just shows how impressive he is to play what they do without it...

how truly sad and pathetic you seem mr.
To write so much (and its not the first time) about something you dont like is just......sad.
You should get a job or a hobby maybe.
My guess would be that someone in the band insulted you, or didnt give you enough attention, when you were crying to get an autograph or maybe YOU think so.
As a hardworking man, I shake my head and role my eyes.
One more thing, their latest album is one of my favourite, if not THE favourite!.
Did I really write all this because of you? wauw, I´ll ignore you next time, bacause I dont have so much spear time....you know hobbies and work etc.

That's some nice - albeit completely useless - old man wisdom you've impaired us with there. Nicko is quite a bit older than the other members of Maiden, and certainly doesn't lack energy as a drummer these days. He looks more and more like Eddie (as does Jannick) but I can't really hold it against one of my favourite bands for not finding the fountain of youth.

You know, I used to walk to school (45 miles each day, no less!) while listening to Maiden and Priest. I fought dinosaurs off with a stick and was amongst the first mammals to develop flint's use as a weapon... what larks!

priest, sabbath and ozzy are bigger in the states than maiden. maiden ripped off priest and never gave them their due; steve harris always saying he was influcened by wishbone ash and genesis among other crappy 70's prog bands, when there sound is cleraly influcened by priest minus the power and aggression as the interviewer says in this article and dickinson agrees with. maiden is the cartoon version of priest and they blow.

Mr. Kill Shot, I think you blow!.........who the fuck cares, being bigger in the states doesn't mean they are better?, America is the home of the worst pop music bullshit in the entire world so by saying you are big here really doesn't matter to the METAL community.....Maiden are clearly the biggest band worlwide, short only to the Beatles in terms of worlwide sales. Remember Maiden don't come on the radio like priest and ozzy and that is why they don't release commercial shit like "Turbo Lover" and "I just want you" Does Maiden write catchy little singles built for airplay like Priests "Living after Midnight", "Breaking the Law", You got another thing comin......PLEASE!

No actually a band as talented as Maiden can write some 13 minute EPIC songs which were specifically NOT for american radioplay unlike Priest, so how can you say Maiden ripped them off?? I've never heard Priest write any EPIC songs unless you want to count their last one Nostradamus, but I could also sit here and say Priest ripped Maiden off.......

you think maiden has sold more records in the world than anyone except the beatles? that's not true. look it up jackass. and as for priest playing pop music , maybe the only priest albums you've ever heard were from the 80's, but in the 70's BEFORE MAIDEN EVER RECORDED ANYTHING they made 5 of the most influntial metal albums ever. go listen to those albums and you'll see what i'm talking about when i say maiden ripped off priest's sound. and yes, turbo lover is garbage but what about anything off the 2 blaze bailey maiden albums or dance of death? and i love how you say being big in america doesn't mean anything cause it's cool to dog america, like you're the only person who likes metal in this country you stupid motherfucker.
