MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE: 'I'll Be In The HALL OF FAME One Way Or The Other, I Know That'
- Apr. 11, 2009
|
|
A few hours before MEGADETH delivered the headline performance of the Epiphone Revolver Golden Gods Awards this past Tuesday night (April 7) at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, HeadbangersBlog.com met up with frontman Dave Mustaine to talk about the ceremony, why there has never been a popular metal awards show in the U.S., how MySpace is ruining music, what the next MEGADETH album is gonna sound like and his recent interaction with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich before METALLICA was nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You can stream the entire 21-minute chat below. Commented Mustaine: "I'm happy with where I'm at right now. I'm sitting on a great record; I love the new record. It's more along the lines of the middle of 'Rust In Peace' and middle of 'Countdown To Extinction'. It's definitely the conclusion of 'United Abominations', if not one up on it. It's definitely... I keep saying 'it's definitely'... I'm excited about it." When asked if there have been been any real obstacles that he's had to navigate during the new album's its creation, Mustaine replied, "We've had some things, like the visa... The record label was supposed to take care of [British producer] Andy Sneap's visa — that's what Andy says — and it didn't take place, and consquently he couldn't go over [to MEGADETH's Vic's Garage recording studio in San Marcos, California] in time and we had to push the record back, and back and back and back. There's a lot of stuff like that that's disappointing but you just have to bite the bullet. For me, I know I'm sitting [on a] great [album], so what's six months? It's not gonna be the end of the world. If anything, all it's gonna do is it's just gonna make it even that much better, because I have the time to assimilate the music and really let it digest." He continued, "This is one of the most exciting stretches of my life. Shit, I was just talking to [ METALLICA drummer Lars] Ulrich the other day on the phone, and asking me to go to [ METALLICA's Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame [induction] — and although we have differing opinions on what person should be inducted for it or not, and it didn't turn out that he felt that I should be inducted, so I passed — but I talked to him. And people are asking about us doing dates with SLAYER again.... "It's really peculiar. At one point, I wanted to pass the olive branch around to all of my enemies and get all of my feuds over after Darrell [ 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott, late PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist] had died, but you never really expect to... When you think about it, you never really know what it's gonna look like when it happens; you never really know what to expect." HeadbangersBlog.com: Was that interaction with Lars civil? Did you feel kind of taken advantage of or mistreated? Mustaine: "It was civil. It's one of those things where more will be revealed, I guess. I'll be in the Hall Of Fame one way or the other. I know that."

Give em hell Dave. If the Rock and Roll HOF was actually about Rock and Roll, then Dave's prediction is a sure bet. However, since the people that determine who get it are sniveling Prince fans, highly unlikely.
Hall of famers that have nothing to do with rock and roll include Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Prince, Madonna and Elvis Costello to name a few.
Groups that should have been in already, Kiss, Rush, Styx, Foreigner, REO, Cheap Trick, 38 Special, Foghat, Judas Priest, Frampton, Heart, etc.
Some billionaire out there needs to start a REAL rock and roll hall of fame with real rock and roll artists.

Remember the Van Halen induction? I seem to remember the HOF explaining they inducted Eddie, Alex, Mike, and both Dave and Sammy because they were both singers in the band's peak years and had been in the band about the same length of time. Gary Cherone was not inducted.
If it had been up to Eddie alome, only he and his brother would have been inducted - and Wolfgang!
I believe the Hall makes the call on these things, which is why very often people who hate each other all end up standing together at the podium uncomfortably.
What Mustaine means (unless he doesn't understand) is that LArs - while he didn't make the decision - probably agrees with the decision that a guy who didn't actually play on an album shouldn't be inducted.
To be fair, it DOES actually make sense - no one inducted Pete Best when the Beatles got in.

That would be cool if sometime Gigantour would just be the big 4.
Megadeth sort of became a thrash handicapped band at Countdown to extinction.
People have waited for Rust in Peace 2, demanded it, ever since it, and he always shy's away from attempting it. So every record is just hype before you realize it's just 2 or 3 good songs...and filler. They used to make albums were almost all the songs were ferocious and good.
I don't think he has any reason to prove anything anymore...and it's killed his creativity. If he tried to outdo every album he previously did...then they'd still be the state of the art speed metal band.
That's just what I think. Sleepwalker was a glimmer of hope...but that's just all it is anymore.

I like his confidence in the matter but unless Metal is looked at a little differently by the masses I have a hard time thinking he and Megadeth will get in. If they get in, then to me Slayer and Pantera are locks which is a complete stretch.

Mr. Mustaine was a member of Metallica BEFORE Metallica recorded their first album. According to the Hall of Fame, Mustaine therefore is ineligible to be inducted as a member of Metallica. End of story. Move on.

Megadeth deserves to get in the HOF, no doubt, but itd be after Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and a host of other bigger named metal bands. The HOF isnt all of a sudden gonna induct alot of them every single year. It will be one or two every year....AT MOST. And, as said, theres alot of bigger ones still not in.

Dave played on that... yes, it was an independent release and an EP at best, but a lot of independently released underproduced cd's these days are considered a band's "first" album... just in case anyone wanted to get completely technical...
assuming one day Megadeth does make it into the HOF (after all the aforementioned bands, and assuming the HOF starts recognizing this kind of music more easily for induction), who would get to go up on stage for induction? now THAT'S a solid question! if you use Lars' criteria, you'd have about 20 guys up there!

I feel for Dave Mustaine. It must be gut wrenching to watch a band you were part of go on to become as successful as Metallica has.
Unfortunately, his role in that band was not big enough to warrant an induction alongside them. I wonder how many drummers will show up when Pearl Jam is inducted or, even more problematic, who will show up when Guns 'n' Roses are inducted?
This is probably the only time I will ever agree with Lars.

No you won't, Dave. Sorry, but you just won't.
This is no statement about quality, who is better, blah blah blah, it's just simply being practical. The rock and roll hall of fame is not going to include Megadeth anytime soon. Within the metal world, Megadeth is probably just as big as Metallica. But that's not what the hall of fame thing is about. It's about the rock music world as a whole, and in those terms Megadeth is nothing special.
Ask someone in the street, chances are they've at least heard of Metallica. Chances aren't the same for Megadeth. In terms of sales, popularity, influence, public knowledge, Metallica are much bigger than Megadeth, and that's what these inductions are based on. Bands that have had a massive impact on the rock world. Metallica have made such an impact. Megadeth haven't.

Delusions of grandeur, anyone?
Face it, Dave - Megadeth will NEVER be inducted in the HoF, it's just not gonna happen. Although Rust in Peace was he shit, Megadeth always lacked the (unfortunate for us old-schoolers) mass appeal Metallica gained with that travesty of a song Enter sandman and the Black album.
Plus, Mustaine - unlike Hetfield - could never sing for shit, goddamn annoying screechy voice:
"Nnnnninety-nine Ways to Die..."
*cringe*

the rules state the person(s) being inducted have had to actually PLAY on a major label recording, and can only be inducted 25 years after their first major label recording. any "official" recordings by metallica pre-KEA, like the compilations they were on and No Life are not eligible. it doesn't fucking matter if Dave wrote riffs or the solos, or whatever. those are the rules of the HOF, so stop fucking whining people. If they start making anyone who had a hand in writing a song or getting a credit, they'd have a hundred people for every fucking band inducted.
I thought this issue was dead already???

let's all be honest here...... getting into the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame is overrated. MADONNA and RUN DMC are in there for crying out loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's an insult to rock and roll. I respect Madonna and Run DMC for their contributions to their style of music.... but they are to rock and roll as Slayer is to disco. It's all political BS. Dave knows that in the minds of many that he is a hall of famer.
Maybe I am just short sighted here but I think that the HOF in music isn't nearly the achievement it is as it is in sports. Maybe if the Rock and Roll HOF inducted individuals rather than bands. Take Dave for example, I could see him in but no one else in Megadeth's history. Trujillo shouldn't be in cause he could be replaced by some money making tour scheme to get Jason back in and now what did he contribute? 1 CD? (not that Metallica needs the money, but shit like this seems to happen on a more frequent basis lately)
