As part of the network's coverage of
METALLICA's induction into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
Fuse went to Manchester, England to document
METALLICA's true feelings up close and personal, about what it means to receive rock's greatest honor. In just a few words, frontman
James Hetfield shared his thoughts: "When you hit the stage and start playing and you look them in the eye, dude, it's over, man!!! That's the ultimate drug, the ultimate dream, the ultimate feeling, and we are addicted to it."

"Metallica: In Their Own Words" in two parts below.
METALLICA followed in the hard rock footsteps of
BLACK SABBATH,
AEROSMITH,
VAN HALEN,
LED ZEPPELIN and
AC/DC by being inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4 in Cleveland, Ohio. During his acceptance speech, frontman
James Hetfield named a number of heavy acts that are eligible but are yet to even be nominated for the
Hall, specifically mentioning
DEEP PURPLE,
THIN LIZZY,
RUSH,
KISS,
TED NUGENT,
ALICE COOPER,
IRON MAIDEN,
JUDAS PRIEST and
MOTÖRHEAD.
At the press conference announcing their induction earlier this year, the members of
METALLICA each named a band they'd like to see inducted and why.
Hetfield: "
MOTÖRHEAD. (Frontman)
Lemmy is rock and roll."
Lars Ulrich (drums): "I'd say
DEEP PURPLE. If you say
LED ZEPPELIN and
BLACK SABBATH, you also have to say
DEEP PURPLE. They come as a threesome."
Kirk Hammett (lead guitar): "I would have to say
RUSH. I think they're a great band who took rock to a different level altogether in terms of like songwriting and technical proficiency, and I believe that they deserve to be in the
Hall of Fame."
Rob Trujillo (bass): "I mean, I love
UFO, I know
Kirk's a huge fan of
UFO too, and a band like that, you know, should be recognized, and hopefully someday will be."
Some industry insiders have suggested that the
Hall and its nominating committee have a bias against heavy metal and hard rock artists, and there is evidence to back that claim up: after all, it took the incredibly influential
BLACK SABBATH a decade to get into the
Hall, while pop diva
MADONNA entered in her first year of eligibility.
