GEEZER BUTLER: 'If We'd Written This Album With OZZY, We'd Still Be Working On The First Track' - Apr. 14, 2009
HEAVEN & HELL/BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler has told Decibel magazine that working with singer Ronnie James Dio is a hell of a lot easier than working with Ozzy Osbourne. "Ronnie's a songwriter in his own right — he's got tons of ideas," the bassist said. "Whereas Ozzy... in the old days, he'd come up with a vocal line and I'd write the lyrics. Ronnie is 100 percent involved in both the musical side and the vocal side, and he writes his own lyrics as well."

Ozzy never took Butler's musical ideas seriously, either. "If we were with Ozzy and I came in with the killer riff of all time, Ozzy wouldn't even think of doing it because I'm not the guitarist and that's the way he thinks," Butler said. "When we tried to do a SABBATH album in 2001, we all gave each other CDs of our riffs or song ideas. Ozzy didn't even listen to mine. Because I'm not a guitarist, he felt I shouldn't be playing guitar. That's why it was so bloody hard to write anything."

Geezer Butler on HEAVEN & HELL's debut CD, "The Devil You Know": "If we'd written this album with Ozzy, we'd still be working on the first track."

The contrast between Ozzy and Dio comes into even sharper focus on tour. "It was great being with Ozzy on the road," HEAVEN & HELL/BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi enthuses. "We had a great time and we still will have hopefully at some point, but with Ronnie it's a lot different, because we go out and we know exactly what we're gonna be doing. With Ozzy, we didn't really know. It was touch and go sometimes on some of those early shows, whether he was gonna turn up, if he'd be able to sing, if his voice was gone, or what. We'd have to cancel shows, which Geezer and myself really hated. But with Ronnie, we've never cancelled a show. He'd have to be seriously, seriously ill before we cancelled a show."

Because Ozzy IS crap. He can't sing well, he plays no instruments and when he does write his own lyrics, they're cringe-worthy. Face it, he's the Britney Spears of metal.

Here's the real context. Ozzy:

1- is slow
2- is busy with his own projects and reality TV
3- Dio kicks ass and so does H&H

I can't wait for this album. I love Heaven and Hell but Heaven and Hell was never the album or band in the last 5, 10, 15, 20 years where I was like Jesus fucking christ I wish they'd just do one more album. I seriously doubt Ozzy is as much of a dick about it as all that. He loves those guys and the music they make. I think he probably loves them a bit too much actually. They seem to have free reign to walk all over him.

This debate will never end. Ozzy and Dio are like night and day. Ozzy wants to take his time because he is fearful, nothing can touch the classic Sabbath stuff and he is afraid that anything else could not stand up to it. Geezer has a good point but Sabbath will never be Sabbath without Ozzy and Bill. The emotions, good and bad, come on in the music. All the mystic forces and all the things these guys have been through together came out in the music. This album will be good but a true Sabbath would be better. They should just get together and see how the albums stand up to one another. In the early days Tony wrote the riffs so Ozzy is use to working off of him. He is a guitar guy, he had Geezer for the lyrics and Tony for the riffs. Black Sabbath is Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell is Heaven Hell. People say its all Black Sabbath but its not. Like I said, the singers are like night and day and that is what makes the bands different. SABBATH FOREVER!!

Geezer is offering the fans some honesty now that Black Sabbath is finally retired. That's right, Heaven and Hell is a brand new band. I have no doubt in my mind that Iommi couldn't continue with the Sabbath name while Ozzy was shitting all over the legacy.

My, my, my, such a short memory Geezer! Here are some quotes about the Dehumanizer sessions.

Geezer Butler:

"Ronnie takes such a long time to get anything done with us. We'd sit in rehearsals coming up with riff after riff after riff and Ronnie would be sitting there reading the paper or something and Tony and I were thinking, when is
going to get involved with the stuff? It just took him ages to come up with anything. With Tony Martin, we'll come up with a riff and he'll put a vocal on it straight away. Cross Purposes took six months from absolutely nothing to the finished product. With Dehumanizer, it took eighteen months and it was six months until we came up with one song. We knew it wasn't going to work, but by that time we were so far into it, we couldn't pull out.

On Heaven and Hell he had a thousand ideas, and was very quick to work with. But like U say, on Dehumanizer it took him a long time to get any ideas about anything."

Tony Martin:

"They offered me the gig within four or five months of getting together with Dio, because the were having such a hard time. Tony called, but I didn't accept."

Geoff Nicholls:

"What happened with Dehumanizer was that they asked me to work on the vocals with Ronnie, because he was having difficulties with some stuff. What I did was to get these songs he was struggling with, add some keyboard chords and then said to this, 'OK, now try this.' It was a method Tony Iommi and I had tried before with other singers that had worked very well.

He said he couldn't do it. I played to everyone else then put my vocal ideas on top. Tony Iommi said "That sounds really good, let's do that, but of course Ronnie wouldn't have it.Anyway, he went away then came back with a vocal line that was very similar to the one I had done. Now, if that had all been conducted with a team attitude, like a band, it would have been fine, but it wasn't"

"Ronnie used to rehearse with an Octa-divider on his voice for example, because he didn't want us to hear his real voice. I never fucking figured that one out! The whole thing was weird and eccentric. Ronnie was very fragile and I just felt like we spent too much time stroking his ego when we should have been making an album."

Some facts:
Geezer wrote the music for 'Voodoo'. If he had written that for the Ozzy lineup, we'd have never heard it. He also had a track for his solo band that was very doomy. that Bill Ward liked so much that he suggested it be used for Sabbath. If what Geezer says is true, it'd have never been used either. I wonder if it was reworked for TDYK..

I think sharon's totalitarian management style has more to do with the formation of heaven and hell than ozzy's shortcomings.

he could have recorded and album with them sometime over the past 30 years if not for her. but ozzy the solo artist is her baby while sabbath was her father's, who she hated.

so she let him go out and play with them and do the hits, but no new album. it's really all about her. it's sad but as selfish, controlling and unforgiving as she is, something within ozzy needs that.

Geezer is talking about facts. Ozmosis took 4 years, Down to Earth was 6 years later, and Black Rain was 6 years after that. Ozzy came out with only 4 Ozzy albums in the last 17 years. Geezer's right, if Ozzy was the singer we would be waiting another 5 years for this album. Thank God for Dio.

maybe that's what Geezer needs, is Ozzy working on the album a little longer, because TDYK is certainly NOT a classic Sabbath album. Slow, doomy, predictable in every respect. They should have taken a fuckin chance, but no. I really like Geezer and Heaven and Hell, but shitting on Ozzy is uncalled for. If it weren't for Ozzy, Geezer would just be another fucking no name bass player, like most of them are. He owes his entire career to the showmanship of Ozzy Osbourne. Yes, Ozzy is not the same man he was 20 years ago, but that's no reason to shit all over him. I guess its a little jealousy on Geezer's part, because he wishes he was as well known, and had at least somewhat of a solo career as Ozzy did.

"Geezer's just shitting on Ozzy because he's jealous of OZZY's success"; "If it weren't for Ozzy, Geezer would be nothing", etc.
Why is it that Black Sabbath is only recogized for their greatness AFTER Ozzy was kicked to the curb thirty years ago? Maybe people are too young to remember it, but Black Sabbath were major stars back in the 70's with tons of money. Ozzy was ONE member of the band who happened to sing for them. Black Sabbath was a unit, it wasn't "Ozzy's band". Funny for all this hype about Ozzy, his dismissal from Black Sabbath for drunken, stoned behavior was a non-event in the music world.

If anyone were a REAL Black Sabbath fan, they'd know ALL of the names of the band members, past and present, it wasn't just "Ozzy and some other guys", ever since I was 13 in 1976, I knew ALL of their names and they were rock and metal GODS. Geezer and Tony's, and Bill's importance and influence cannot be overlooked. I don't know why people think that to criticize Ozzy
is just an act of jealousy, he's put himself out there in the most visibility that he has ever had in his life with his t.v. shows and all, so naturally he's going to be a target for scrutiny and criticism. Ozzy has had a long history of not being the most focused musician in the world. It's great to see Heaven and Hell come out with an album in less time than expected. It's been fourteen years since we've had a full length studio release from the members of Sabbath.

I could point out No More Tears as a song with a co-write with the bassist to refute his willingness to work with what he considers a songworthy bass part. So, I don't think OZZY is as narrow minded as he's being painted.

It's just a bit sad to bring this out in public. I doubt that this will hasten any possible reunion CD with OZZY. Most likely, this will widen the communication gap between the two & fire up OZZY's gatekeeper(Sharon)

It sucks that there will probably never be another Sabbath album with Ozzy. I am looking forward to this Heaven & Hell album though. Some of the Dio era stuff was pretty good. Heaven and Hell ,Time Machine and Sign of the Southern Cross being my favorites from the Dio era.

Ozzy used to be tolerable but know he's a joke. His guitarists write ALL his music and that's why he punched Randy Rhodes in the face when Randy wanted to quit. He punched a guy that weighed 120lbs! What a tough-guy. The reason he did this is he saw his "gravy-train" leaving the station. As much as I like Zakk Wylde, he's no Rhodes, Jake E. Lee, or Iommi and that's why Ozzy's stuff has sucked for so so long. There, I said it! I think Zakk's solo stuff is damn good but what he's done for Ozzy just stinks to high hell. The jerk offs that post Ozzy as some genius have never picked up an instrument. The work that it takes to be a professional musician is takes years and years of practice. So for anyone to diminish Geezer is lame. He's a great bassist.

i've read several comments on here that more or less say "fuck geezer", and "ozzy rules", etc. someone even said that if it weren't for ozzy, geezer would be a nobody. it's the other way around. ozzy wouldn't have been anybody if it hadn't been for geezer's writing skills. he was the one writing most of sabbath's songs. if it weren't for iommi's great guitar playing and geezer's lyrics, nobody would even know who ozzy was. he never would have made it to where he is today without the help of the other bandmates, but each of them could have done fine on their own.

I can understand why some poster above said Ozzy Osbourne is the Britney Spears of heavy metal. After all, they both depend on other songwriters and musicians to write and record their songs. They both became more infamous and notorious to the wider public (i.e. outside their fan base) not because of their musical talents but rather because of their eccentric antics. Both of them have gotten more famous than they deserve to be.

No comparison... Ozzy is a joke at his point. Dio's last 3 solo albums have been magnificent.... while Ozzy hasn't put out anything worthwhile since the 80s.

Sabbath actually did record and complete an entire album with Rick Rubin as producer, however they shelved it because the material couldn't live up to the classic Sabbath material.

Yeah....is that why Ozzy and Sharon spread rumors about Tony being gay in the 80's????? Because they are such angels??????

Not to mention......Geezer wrote the lyrics, Tony(along with Geezer) wrote the music. All Ozzy has to do is sing. Yet no new Sabbath CD, why????? Because Sharon gets more money from Ozzy's solo career. With Sabbath, the money gets divided equally.

Black Rain was a fine album, it had some new sound for Ozzy and industrial vibe. it wasnt great but still good and better then most of the other crap thats been on the charts the last few years. and 7 albums from 1980 to 1995 is good and most of these albums were very good. but i have to say sales is not the same as good at least not today.

First, Let my say I really appreciate you helping to make my point, you didn't answer anything based on the criteria of the questions, so thanks again.

Secondly, My life is & has been pretty fuckin good so far, yeah I know I've never released an album or went on tour or impacted millions of people but guess what , those are not the only keys to true happiness.

Thirdly, Your name is a very cool word because it tells everyone else that your blood is truer than all others , & that you stand for all things truer than anyone else is capable, hell your blood is so true(r) that your probably a blood relative of the father of all pure bloods aren't ya!

Lastly, I hate to break it to ya, but one definition of a poser is someone who does not think for themselves & believes their heroes are infallible & deserve to be worshiped, followed or in this case listened to without question of the mediocrity they have become but fail to admit to it. So once again you have helped anyone who was curious as to what a "poser" might be defined as.

For all you post-Ozzy era Sabbath haters....you're absolutely right. Nothing that Tony and Geezer have written between 1980 and now can stand up to the mind blowing artistic genius that was Ozzy's duet with Miss Piggy.

Funny how the best albums Ozzy ever appeared on, were not even Sabbath albums, and the bass player wrote most of the lyrics and melody, getting no credit for it.

I wouldn't disagree with you that excluding Dehumanizer everything from Born Again to Forbidden lacked the cohesion of a true band & therefore may not be considered true Sabbath albums.
However with that being said at least Tony while being self absorbed did not do something to make him more like the dog faced boy at the traveling side show than a musician.

Ozzy havent changed a bit, so what he does some tv-shows and some "normal" people only know him for that, who gives a shit??? saw him live 2 years ago and he was great, much better then Metallica was for example, saw them play the same year, and saw the hall of fame performance from them and Hetfield wasnt in a very good form. and im not sure why Iommi called 7th Star Black Sabbath, maybe it was the record company.
but still i hope the new Ozzy album will be good and from what i have heard of Heaven and Hell it seems to be very good!

If Geezer had all these great ideas, then where is his solo project that has gone gold?

With so many posts and me being too lazy to go back to see who said what....... someone said that Ozzy has never put anyone out great with or without Sabbath. That comment blew my mind..... I believe that album Paranoid goes down in history as one of the greatest of all times. Sabbath with Ozzy influenced most of the metal you listen to today. I don't give a shit if Ozzy can or can't play an instrument. I believe he plays the harmonica (weather you classify that or not, up to you). Did anyone care that Robert Plant never played an instrument? Plant, Ozzy and Halford are all great front men and that's what they do. Can't hold that against them. Without guys like them, you wouldn't have the music you have today.

As for Geezer...... he has the right to say what he wants. In my opinion..... seems kind of classless. I don't think that Ozzy has gone on record saying anything negative about him. Hell, Ozzy was good enough for him during Ozzy's post-Sabbath career when he had nothing else. Almost seems a bit like biting the hand that fed you.
