IRON MAIDEN Planning New Studio Album
- Apr. 22, 2009
|
|
According ot BANG Media International, IRON MAIDEN will start work on its next album this year. The group hopes to have a new album out and be back on tour in 2010. Guitarist Adrian Smith told BANG showbiz: "At the end of the year we'll be writing again, rehearsing and recording at the beginning of next year. Then we'll be back out on the road again next year. Kevin Shirley [producer] will be working on it with us and we'll probably be doing it somewhere where we've done a lot for recording in the past." The next IRON MAIDEN album will be the band's fifteenth studio record, and they face a challenge to follow up their last effort, 2006s "A Matter of Life and Death" which was received well critically and saw the band tour playing the whole album. Speaking at the premiere of the band's documentary film "Iron Maiden: Flight666", Adrian added: "There's always a bit of pressure to follow up the last album, in a way it's good because it motivates you. "We never get complacent; we always try our best for our own sake as much as anything else. As far as pressure for another album, we just do what we do - we've been doing it long enough now, we know what we're doing [laughs]"

I for one loved the last album. I liked the live sound and the intircate and powerful songs!
My only suggestion is to please crank the guitars much louder in the mix! Maiden always has the guitars too low. I really like Steve's bass playing and all but his tone is so midrange it would still cut through a fatter guitar sound just fine.
Word to Steve and Kevin, crank the guitars this time! Just imagine how much more powerful the songs would sound!

I don't particularly like his production work with Maiden - especially on the guitar side of things. I was hoping they'd use somebody else this time. But if they're happy, that's what really counts of course!

Dance of Death > AMoLaD
Don Kaye's review of AMoLaD, every criticism, was almost spot-on. The only thing I disagree with is that he gave the album a 5.5 rating. That's way too high.
At least I live in a day and age where I can still buy a new Iron Maiden album. Thing is, last time it wasn't worth my money.
Maybe this time?
Yeah I keep hoping for a new Powerslave. They proved they still got it in them with Montesgur.

Expect another album full of long drawn-out intros, mid-tempo songs and a guitar team that has one guitarist too many (yes Jannick, I pointing my finger at you!!)...
At least I can look forward to a new album cover!

The album won't take three years...it'll take about four. Ha!
Bruce said that they came up with a plan during the reunion to do three-year album cycles, which they've held to (2000, 2003, 2006).
They probably would have had a new album readied this year had it not been for the overwhelming popularity and demand for the Golden Years tour, which they just wrapped up. I don't think they were quite anticipating such a frenzied reaction to this amazing tour.
So, 2006 to 2010... four years between new albums instead of the usual three. They write and record fairly quickly, so no worries about waiting too long.

And all you people clamoring for a return to Powerslave/Piece of Mind/Seventh Son sound...forget it.
For better or worse, the sound that they've pretty much established since the reunion is here to stay: soft acoustic intros, repetitious chorus, a somewhat muddled sound, and a soft acoustic outro.
Can't say that I really love this formula, but it's pretty obvious that Steve Harris is set in his ways and will not significantly alter his writing template. The other band members contribute significantly, but ultimately, he molds the songs to fit his vision (he gets a co-songwriting credit on EVERY song, after all).
Kevin Shirley is a red herring...Steve pretty much controls the production, and since he's got significant hearing loss, this is not a good thing. Hence the strange mixes that we get.

It's funny that some of you are hoping for a Seventh Son sound album. I remember when that album and Somewhere In Time were hated because of the keyboards. I don't really mind the new song style they use. It gives the songs a more epic feel.
Their weakest album for me has always been Fear Of The Dark followed closely by No Prayer For The Dying. It just seemed that they had a couple of highlights and the rest was just filler. It is great that a band that has been around as long as they have is still putting out quality music. It is a good testament to their songwriting abilities.

Fear of the Dark and No Prayer are pretty abysmal efforts due to:
1. No Adrian Smith 2. Bruce getting burned out, losing interest in the band and changing his singing style to a Brian Johnson-style rasp. 3. Janick Gers' sloppy, poor man's Ritchie Blackmore "solos"
Say what you will about the Blaze albums, but at least they tried something totally different. Not successful but at least artistically honest, unlike the last two Bruce albums before the reunion.

I love this band but Iron Maiden no longer needs to make a great album in order to make a shit load of money. They're just not hungry anymore.

Maiden are the shit. Great band with catchy riffs and a superb singer. He's got an ego, but if you ignore the ego, he's an awesome front man w/ an unbelievable voice. As far as their music, there's not much they haven't done well. They have had some great cd's but I have to admit the efforts I least enjoyed were the following...Seventh Son (some people love this one-except for moonchild and clairvoyant the rest I can do without), Fear of the Dark, X-Factor, and No Prayer.
The BEST were (in this order) Iron Maiden (1st one), AMOLAD, Brave New World, Number of the beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Killers, Caught Somewhere in time, Dance of the Death, and Vitual XI. All of these were just masterpieces and I can listen to them over and over!
I know this is very subjective but what the hell! :) Can't wait for the new one!

I agree about Gers.
I used to say I didn't like him as a player, but then I realized I do like his playing when he's the only guitarist. Check out his cool stuff on Dickinson's first solo album, and his work with Ian Gillan, etc.
Can't stand him in Maiden. One of my favorite things about Iron Maiden has always been the cool contrast between Smith and Murray, two totally different players whose styles really compliment one another.
Listen to any classic era 5-piece Maiden record and you can instantly tell who's playing each part. With the 3 guitar lineup, it's a lot harder. Gers' style seems to sit somewhere right in the middle between Smith and Murray, and the effect is that there's no longer that sharp contrast from one guitar solo to the next. He kind of causes it all to blend together, and that cool effect is lost.
Gers - go start a kickass new band, and leave Maiden to the classic duo!

Adrian and Dave are very different...
Adrian is the more complete guitarist of the two: he uses different scales and lots of different effects and equipment (wah pedals, double-neck guitars, acoustic), is meticulous about his tone and replicating his solos live, and he puts a lot of thought into the composition of his solos.
Davey has more of a shoot from the hip style: mostly blues scales, lots of legato technique, mostly improvised solos, but still has an amazingly warm and pleasing guitar tone.
But the key thing is they both have very fluid and melodic styles. Everything they play just sounds GOOD. They don't hit a lot of bum notes and they're just pleasing to the ear.
Gers on the other hand is all over the place...undisciplined, crappy guitar tone, sloppy soloing style, dissonant to the point where there's almost no discernible melody at times, just a cacophonous jumble of random notes.
It's a horrible clash with Adrian and Davey's first-rate musicianship.

Oh, and for the record, I love BNW and really like both DOD and AMOLAD...

Don't get me wrong...I don't hate Janick.
He's a good songwriter and CAN play some quality guitar when he slows it down a bit. Plus, he seems like an all-around nice guy.
I don't think I want him to leave Maiden at this point, but I do wish he'd put more care into his compositions.

Actually, that kind of supports what everybody is saying about Gers.
When playing in a 2 guitar lineup, he's a little better fit. When playing between Murray and Smith, he squashed that classic dynamic. You just don't hear it anymore when they trade off solos.
I will say this about Gers - It's cool having that huge live sound, and they do a great job of still keeping it tight with 6 players on stage. He also adds an energetic stage presence neither Murray nor Smith have ever had. Although, his particular style of jumping around like his nuts are on fire seems more suited to an 80's era LA glam band than to Iron Maiden...
I remember meeting him outside the venue on the first Dickinson solo tour in 1990. Nice guy. I told him how Maiden was my favorite band and how Adrian Smith was one of the first guitar players I got into that made me want to play guitar myself. When I said that, he just looked at me like I was from Mars...
Gimme a break! I was 18. Besides, while he's not the influential Hendrix/Iommi/Malmsteen type, I still think Smith's underrated. Very tasteful player, and a good writer whose presence was sorely missed when he left after 'Seventh Son...'
Ditch Gers.

...are spot on.
I love Iron Maiden, but as far as new releases go, they've been sub-par for awhile now. How many 8-9 minute songs with bass / soft acoustic guitar intros / middles / outros can we listen to???
The best thing I can say about the last 3 albums is that they were (at least) better than than the Blaze-era stuff. Total + utter garbage. DOD is probably the best...
Nothing will ever top those first 5 albums...not only did they write great songs, but there was so much energy from a band that knew they were the best and had the fan base (back then) to prove it.
The new album will come out, I'll buy it (being a good fan), fall asleep halways through track # 5 (at the 6 minute mark) and then put it back on the shelf.
Sorry guys, but that's the truth...

with the comments about Gers, Adrian, and Murray. Gers just muddles it up when is playing with them live. Adrian is easily my fav or the 3, and I wish they would ditch Gers, but that isnt going to happen. They are all good friends, so dream on kiddies. I thought AMOLAD was by far one their best work since Seventh Son, and I loved DOD and BNW a LOT. Big f'ing deal they got rid of the gallop. I surely dont want to live in the 80's, and that was my teen decade. Enjoy those albums for what they were, and embrace something new and different for a change, which is what we got with their last album. Yeah, they could've shortened the choruses down a bit, but it's Iron FUCKING Maiden, and I never want the music to end. They havent abandoned the short songs, but the real musicianship and song-writing lies in the longer songs, and thats what I love about them now. Pachendale and DOD were the two highlights of DOD, cause those were the longest songs. If they can give me a mix of those last two albums, I'll be happy as can be. Even if they keep experimenting like they did last one, it's still going to be awesome cause its IRON FUCKING MAIDEN!!!!
There is no need to change Producers when Steve and Bruce make most of the decisions in the sound of their albums. However, someone like Andy Sneap MIGHT could influence them to be a bit more aggressive and heavier at times.

for a new album and to see my fav band Maiden out on the road again!! I am sure it will be passionate, full of great songs, intricate solos and anthemic chorus that make my arms tingle....
Everybody here is saying how great Adrian is and how Gers sucks....well actually I like Davey the best, afterall he is the backbone of Maiden and has been there on every 'kin album. Davey sure is a shy guy but he is really a great player. He can just improvise and his solos don't feel so rehearsed. I will admit that Adrian is great too and I missed him sorely after SSOASS, especially his song writing..... Like it or not people Gers is here to stay.
I closed my eyes and thought about life without Maiden and it is very depressing.....I am just glad I am still alive to witness the greatest metal band live and be able to buy a new album!
