SMASHING PUMPKINS Offer Subscription To Recording Process
- Apr. 22, 2009

According to The Pulse of Radio, SMASHING PUMPKINS founder Billy Corgan has announced that he is launching a subscription service at the band's official web site that will allow fans to track the progress of new PUMPKINS music as Corgan writes and records it in the studio. Fans would receive video diary entries, photos, lyrics and inside looks at the recording process during a 12-week period, all for a price tag of $40.
Corgan said in a statement, "The goal is to create a working model that is not profit motivated but rather information and access motivated. In exchange for a fixed resource base fans will be let inside in an unprecedented way to the creative process of preparing to make the next (SMASHING PUMPKINS) album while also inspiring an interactive dialogue that will help shape the work."
Corgan promises at least five studio updates a week for subscribers, with each lasting at least five minutes.
The video updates will eventually be collected into a film at the end of the recording process. Fans will not get access to any completed music.
The site says that "the project will be set aside for a future time" if there is not enough subscriber demand.
Corgan recently said that the next PUMPKINS albums could contain as many as 44 tracks, with segments of it released online over a two-year period.
Corgan recently auditioned drummers — including SYSTEM OF A DOWN's John Dolmayan — to replace Jimmy Chamberlin in the band.

seems pretty profiit based to me. if you got a download of finished music once it was recorded thatd be a pretty cool idea but since all you get is a stupid video and some other worthless shit its hardly worth the $40

i guess he figures he's gotta do this, because everybody knows the music he's writing isnt worth the time spent listening to it. now hes gonna try and get his fans to listen to him tune his guitar.

Sort of. He didn't say he was done recording albums, he said done releasing albums in the traditional sense. the article also says he will be releasing it digitally over a 2 year period, so there won't be any physical product to speak of. Just a few songs here and there released on iTunes, like he has already done a few times. You know what? It's genius! People are much more willing to spend a buck at a time than $10, so he's covertly getting people to buy his whole "album", just one piece at a time. You think this guy is greedy? uh uh, he's fucking smart. He's rolling with the times. That's what I call a visionary, just like Trent and Radiohead.

....I'm not all that sure that anyone would give a shit about the recording process, especially for that price tag. So many bands offer really intense access to their processes without charging a dime.

He just needs to remember why he started making music rather than being a prick all the time.
And I for one still purchase the physical product, so I can get the art work, and have a hard copy.
And I would hardly mention him and Trent in the same paragraph as William. Trent is far more level headed and cooler to his fans in every way shape and form, from him giving us tons of free music, bootlegging 500 gb of show footage and uploading it for fans to edit, releasing the dvd's of Closure on Pirate Bay and now possibly allowing taping at the shows now. And I have yet to see a youtube video of Trent going on a tirade against people who paid to see him preform.

Wow, what a rip off. It's not like this is a new idea. Ever heard of a Making of bonus dvd that they often include with albums these days, Billy? Usually it is free dumbass.

day 1: billy walks into starbucks and orders a venti latte while muttering poetry to himself scaring the baristas. the finished film would be called 'Crying on Clybourn' or 'Winding through Waaaaah-cker Drive' (working titles of course). "The goal is to create a working model that is not profit motivated" then go play your sobbing bullshit for free in an empty field

....lest you forget that Machina II was released for free over the net, way before anyone else had done that. And he TOLD his friends to do it. It was his gift to his fans.
I don't see how Trent isn't a prick just because he knows how to properly market himself. You think he's doing that because he's a nice guy? The album he put up on his site made him the most money of any album he's put out to date, so don't tell me he's some sort of philanthropist. And plus, he takes digs at other bands in the media, so to me, that qualifies as a dick. Billy ain't a dick, he's just a whiner.
